This place reminds me of home (Iowa). Lots of comfort food and so.many.pies!! We tried the meatloaf and grilled pork chops. I don't love peppers in my meatloaf and the mac and cheese was lackluster. My mom decided to be adventurous and try the zipper peas and didn't love them, but that was a risky choice -- and she didn't take the server up on her offer to replace the side if she didn't like them. Southern cooking at its best, Mary's Kitchen has it down. The staff is friendly and country, the food is fresh and southern. I had the cat fish, and fries and I have to tell you both were so fresh and perfectly cooked. If you have had fried cat fish before you know how wrong it is to overcook it. I heard from my friend Andrea that this would be a good place to try it was black owned and we like to support our people, so we tried it, we called in an order a porkchop basket without pickles and a chef salad with no jalapenos. we place the order at 12:29 pm we spoke with a male who was friendly he took our order gave us order number 13 and asked us for the 4 digits of our phone number he stated it would be 30 minutes. when arriving to the location at 1:05 there was no communication it was just a long line. there was only one line, i went to the pick-up counter and asked a lady a question, i said we have ordered online, and we are here to pick up our order. she said i would have to stand in the long line and pay before we picked up our food, now mind you he said it would be 30 minutes on the phone, not an additional 30 minutes to wait on people taking orders and paying all in the same line there was only one line. what is the purpose of online? they give you a time to pick up and then you have to wait in the same line of people taking orders, there was only one person at the counter, my friend and i ended up leaving, we try our best to support black own business, but this was just an epic fail of customer service and service and i never got to even try their food. read more

Place was very nice but only had two cooks tonight. Waited over a hour for our food. Had the Catfish. It was alright and sister had hamburger steak which was just a hamburger with gravy on top. It came out burnt on the bottom and pink in the middle. Was told that they were precooked. Manager took off for the hamburger on tab. Started to leave tip but found I didn't have cash. Manager stated we didn't leave a tip and we shouldn't blame waitress for the long wait, that the waitress is only paid $5.25 an hour. Maybe you should pay your help better and get better cooks. Very disappointed! Stopped by at 2:45 for a late lunch with the wife. She ordered the beef tips over mashed potatoes with corn, cucumber salad, and corn bread. I ordered the baked chicken with Cole slaw and cucumber salad. First, wife's beef tips were over done and the gravy was nothing but sodium. Mashed potatoes were too chunky and the corn was flavorless and over done. The cucumber salads came at room temperature and seemed to have been sitting in the dressing for a while, which again had no flavor. As for the Cole slaw, it too was at room temp and actually a tad warm. Still, needed some seasoning. The biggest disappointment was the baked chicken, which were two breast/wings combos - dry, dry, dry and inedible. I tore one of the portions apart trying to find a piece that was moist and couldn't. I even tried bbq sauce to help, but it really was too dry to consume. The other portion I didn't even touch because it was the same and was senseless to take home as a result. Basically we didn't eat anything after trying the food. Portion sizes are huge for the price and I would recommend cutting the sized in half, assuming that they make corrections to the food. (Temperatures, doneness, and seasoning) Expediter needed to check quality of food before it goes out. Also, the inside definitely needs to be deep cleaned and brightened up. You can look at the floors and ceilings and tell the owner hasn't had this done in a while. Only bright spot was our server, who recognized that we had er eat hardly anything and asked further questions as to the issue. She rightfully did not charge us for the meals and even concurred with my assessment of the chicken. read more

This is my first time here. I ordered beef tips and rice., fried okra and green beans. I was VERY disappointed with the beef tips and the okra. The beef tips were chew, and tough. Very dissappointed in Mary's Kitchen today. The main reason was that they did not notify us customers that they had been shut down by the health department while we were eating and waited for us to pay and unlock the door to let us out. That shows little or no regard for the customers health or customer satisfaction. Everyone that had to pay after they were shut down should be entitled to a refund. If the health department shuts you down you should immediately notify your customers of the situation and not let then find out by recognizing the signage on the door. I have been going to this establishment for years when I visit Fort Walton Beach. The meals are decent and the deserts very good. My mother and I ate there last week and it was disappointing. She ordered chicken livers and cole slaw and the chicken livers were too salty and the Cole slaw was not fresh. My oyster Po' boy was good. You have to pay at the register, which is fine, but annoying when you have to wait behind someone else for several minutes for the cashier to arrive. I by no means am a good judge of Southern food, (I'm Asian and I grew up on the west coast haha!), but I think the food here is pretty good. Pulled pork BBQ sammich is my go-to. I love, love, looooooove their dessert bar!!! The peanut butter pie gives me a foodgasm every time! Staff is super friendly and prices are reasonable. This week my Dad and I went into Mary's Kitchen on a Tuesday around lunchtime. Even before we walked in the door we could tell it was going to be busy. There were a lot of people standing around the entrance waiting to be seated. There was only one hostess but she was very efficient about recognizing the order that guests came in and seating them accordingly. The restaurant was packed but we were seated very quickly (less than two minutes after walking in). Our server noticed us right away and even though she had a lot going on made a point to great us and let us know she would be right with us. She handled the tables in her section quickly but not in a way that made us feel like she just wanted to serve us and get us out of there. She had our drinks to us nearly as quickly as we ordered them and took our thorough order promptly. Their sweet tea is 5 five star. I had a cheeseburger with fries, which I'm sure isn't exactly a curveball for any lunch time diner, but it was great. I ordered it medium. I prefer medium rare but the last few places I have been have prepared it a little too rare. I don't think that would have been a problem at Mary's, their medium came out perfect. It also came out quickly. I don't think we waited more than ten minutes before it arrived. Our server did a great job of keeping our glasses full throughout the meal and also made sure that everything tasted all right, which it did. Mary's Kitchen would have gotten a 5th star if the portional size had been proportional. The meat in my cheeseburger was noticably smaller than then bun it was served on. That is my only reservation. This is my favorite place to eat in Uptown Station, and really in that entire area of Fort Walton it's going to be hard to find a better lunch, especially if you're on a lunch break and time is an issue. read more
