Absolutely love! My family has been coming here for 40+ years, far before I was born, and the qualify of their food and service has never done us wrong. They always start us right with the chips and salsa. The chips are always perfectly crisp & the salsa is so good, my grandma literally drinks it. Haha They have large volume drinking glasses, which are always a plus at a restaurant for me. The longtime staff are like family to us, and it's always the first place I come when I visit back here in town. The feel of it is quaint, yet bustling with life and communal joy from the regulars who can call this place home. My personal go to since childhood is the cheese enchilada plate, and it never lets me down. I love this place! Mary is always working and so attentive to me. I placed an order over the phone today after only ordering in person for months and she recognized me and knew that I was the one who ordered when I arrived for pick up! And she didn't take my name over the phone so she is just very observant! Lol! Fast service. Masks were worn and prices are great. There are daily specials too! Haven't checked those out yet. A friend recommended this place today for lunch and very happy he did! I grew up on the Southside of SA and this excellent restaurant isn't too far from where I lived as a kid. Ordered the days lunch special for 6.99 plus a drink. Boy do I miss the old neighborhood. It was a Cheese Enchilada plate, rice & beans with freshly made flour tortillas that enhanced the very delicious food. Even the chips and hot sauce were tasty. The only negative thing I can say was that my waitress never checked in on me after serving the food. But this will DEFINITELY NOT PREVENT ME FROM COMING BACK. I live about 35-40 miles away but will gladly drive across town just to eat there. No doubt one of the best not just in that area but throughout the city. Bottom Line: The epitome of "hole in the wall" but the food was good. My friends explained that Mary's, which serves Mexican food, is a "hole in the wall." Wow, yes it is. Its the dumpiest restaurant I've ever been to but it was tasty and I ate every bite of my cheese enchilada, crispy beef taco and chicken soft taco. The logistics here are that you seat yourself, Mary's staff waits on you and then you pay at the counter when you are done. They have enough tables to accommodate a large crowd but be sure to arrive early during weekday lunches to snag parking and seating. Mary's does not have fountain sodas (just cans) but they do serve iced tea, both sweetened and unsweetened to quench your thirst and offer reprieve from the spicy salsa. The restaurant felt a tad grody at the times but the service was great, even for our crowd of 12. read more

This is one of those reviews that you hate writing. Why? Well, to begin with, the place was packed and this means that it's well liked by others. Second, as a gringo from the northern states, you would definitely not classify the Mexican food I grew up with as "authentic." As I write this, I know full well that my opinion of Mary's is a minority opinion. That being said, here goes... First and foremost, the staff was exceptionally nice; they welcomed our rather large group in with a warm hello and took our order within about 5 minutes. The waitress explained what certain dishes were as did some of my more acculturated eating companions. I decided to get the gorditas plate with comes with 2 gorditas (beef or chicken) refried beans, and rice. I also ordered a Coke (comes in a can). What do you guys call the beef mixed with potato? Well, I call it bland! Sorry, but it is. I've eaten this mix at Ray's Puffy Tacos, several authentic Mexican food trucks, and now here at Mary's. Have you guys ever heard of seasoning? If this is authentic Mexican, well, give me the gringo stuff. The gorditas were tasteless despite being loaded with the beef mixture, shredded lettuce, and cheese. I salted and added hot sauce to t he second one and it was quite better but still rather bland. The beans were nothing to write home about and the rice, likewise, rather bland. The Coke was the best thing going at this luncheon. The barrio bowl seemed to please my eating companion but didn't look all that appetizing to me. The barrio bowl, a Wednesday lunch special for $6.00, looks like spaghetti in a spicy Mexican soup, topped with ground beef. He liked it so maybe next time I'll have to give it a try. My other eating companion got Valerie's Plate which consists of an enchilada, a chicken chalupa, and a puffy taco. Normally he'd let me know if the meal was tasty but as he did not on this occasion, I can only assume that it wasn't. Overall, this is a popular little taquiera that gets busy during lunch. The fact that I personally didn't care for the food should not dissuade you from going, particularly if you are more accustomed to authentic Mexican food. read more

The review by a guy who calls himself 'lord of the fries' not withstanding, Mary's is indeed an institution; a neighborhood fixture. I would never call a meal here sublime, an experience which must be sought. It does, however, remind one of Abuelita's cocina. The meals are varied, and satisfying. The tortillas are as they should be. It's convenient to the office, and efficient enough to get you in and out quickly. The waitresses were nice but that's all I can say about this place. I ordered the pancake breakfast with over easy eggs, and bacon and coffee. When the waitress brought my food, it was cold. I don't know how that can be when i saw the waitress took the plate from the cook, it didn't sit there long at all. The bacon was cold. The pancakes were good but it would have been better if it was hot. The eggs. God, they were terrible. It tasted like they didn't thoroughly rinse the pan because it tasted like cleaning chemical. I took one bite of the eggs and nearly threw up. Customer service wise... It seems like waitresses were more interested in serving their family and/or friends because I noticed other patrons having to constantly waive down for refills. I heard about this place from two different people that don't know each other. My husband and I were in the area and we thought we would try it to see what all the hype was. We ate there for breakfast and the breakfast tacos were delicious! The flour tortillas were to die for. I ate a potato and eggs and a ham and egg. Both are very good!! I saw some other customers ordered breakfast plates and they looked really good. We were so glad we stopped by. We will definitely come back and we would like to try the lunch plates one day. Mary's is is destination tortilla place for me. Perfect handmade, grill marked, pass the butter, vehicles for delivering their tasty fillings. I am notoriously picky about my chorizo egg ratio and soft scramble. I will out right say "I don't want just want chorizo flavored dried out eggs. In San Antonio, we can get away with being overly vigilante about breakfast taco construction. We don't go to hole in the walls on the sketchy side of town at the crack of dawn for inconsistent haphazardly efforts. Pro: Try not to eat a stack of tortillas and butter like pancakes. Potatoes are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I don't know if it because I was scary about micromanaging my charizo and egg plate, but they nailed it. The sausage it a good tasty quality. I have yet to have a bad egg here. Puffy taco, filled with yummy Picadillo deserves more marketing. Instead, they are famous for their friday ribs special. If they run out, get the puffy tacos. Crispy; thoughtfully served in a aluminum foil pouch, and packed with meat and freash looking produce. Con: Cheese enchiladas were a disappointment. The sauce seemed from a can and greasy. The chicken flauta was just serviceable. Conclusion: Worth the trips to the side of town that looks like neighborhood from 1950s Mexico. If you forget to place your friday rib special in ahead of time, and you can call ahead and do that- get a puffy. Really, anything in their heavenly tortillas has yet to disappoint me. read more

This place is super cheap. It's also in the slums. I went here for lunch with coworkers and when I saw the front of the restaurant, I realized it was a total dive. Not fancy. I ordered a lunch special, two cheese enchiladas and it comes with rice and beans. It was $5.99. It is self seating and we sat at a table near the restrooms, which I don't really like. I could smell the bathroom from time to time. It wasn't horrible, but somewhat unpleasant. The food came out, piping hot. The enchiladas were not noteworthy. I tried a tiny bit of the rice, which seemed ok. The beans were really good. I tried a flour tortilla of my coworkers and it may have been the best flour tortilla I've ever had. I probably won't be going back though because it is in a scary area and I don't really like the restaurant inside or out. read more
