I've taken my Toyota to Masaki's a couple of times. They are very friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient. They are like your neighborhood mechanic who has your best interest in mind. It's hard to find a mechanic that you can trust, especially if you are a woman! Believe it or not there are still mechanics out there that talk down to women and express impatience with the fact that they are talking to a woman, but not these guys. If they can't do the job, then they can also refer you to someone who can, at a reasonable price. And I always get my car back a little cleaner with that white paper mat that I like so well on the driver's side. About a month ago, I had smoldering in my jeep which left a hole in the floor by the back of the seat.. I was towed to Masaki's auto repair by triple AAA. They lifted my jeep, showed me where the damage was, helped me try and find someone to complete the bodywork and when that didn't work, Elliot made the phone call to get me towed back to the North Shore. I was well taken care of and they did not charge me to lift that jeep and diagnose the problem. Talk about Aloha nui! Daryl and Dave Masaki, Elliot and the workers take care of their customers! Not SATISFIED!!!!! 2-09-2011 My 2008 Mazda CX7 was over heating due to a faulty thermostat, which I had diagnosed at Sears who stated they can not do the repair on this particular Mazda, Thus I decided to try Masaki's Repair Shop . who quoted me $420. Which included parts, 4-6 hrs labor, gasket and Coolant. Later that evening I received a call from the Owner Dave Masaki stating that he miss calculated the cost and the price would be $690. Plus taxes and extra for a drain plug and sensor would make it a total of $754.40 Repair Pal estimates the costs between $190. - $250. (same as list below) plus $80 - $100 for a diagnostic check if required. Mazda Dealer est. at $415 (Same as list below) When I went to pick up my car I was told there was extra labor charge as it took over 3 hours, labor after quoting me 4 - 6 hours, coolant charge was to be included and sensor charge, which was to be included, road test time. I was informed of Masaki's Auto from a friend and was impressed by the great reviews this shop has received on the net. I normally do auto repairs myself but one day I felt lazy (67 yr. old) of having to replace a part under my vehicle and called Masaki's Auto. I was impressed that they could take my vehicle in immediately to have the job done. The owners and the employees that I spoke to were all courteous and knowledgeable and I picked up my vehicle that same day. The price was right too! I'll definitely consider them again. I went to Masaki's for a problem with the engine...most probably the alternator. The staff were all friendly and polite. The one guy came out and checked the battery and engine and was nice and determined it was the alternator that was dead. I had other issues perhaps, but he said we couldn't do anything until we got the alternator fixed. He said he would call me back with an estimate. Later I got a call. The alternator would be $551.30, but he saw cracks on belts and that would be a total of 692 if i wanted it done. I checked with a mechanic friend and he said it was quite a pricey alternator. As well as a belt change. I looked it up online and in general they should run between 400 and 511 on this model of car. My main concern was that this may not even fix the car's problems. It could be the first of many expensive issues. I got a call back from the garage, pressuring me about whether I would have the work done. I said I wasn't sure yet and he said if I declined that I was on the hook for 132 for diagnostics. Although I expected an expense, it was never laid out in advance and explained to me, which didn't quite seem right. Anyway, I declined and decided to donate the car. The resale value was $1600 and it didn't make sense to do $700+ work to get our backup vehicle to work. I picked up the car the next morning and the car was dead. I was annoyed that they left the battery hooked up, knowing the alternator was fried. Luckily I had another battery in the trunk and they helped me change it. So I give them a star for being polite. The three missing stars are for 1. being VERY pricey 2. not warning of diagnostic costs BEFORE performing them, and 3. being vague about whether or not a $700 repair bill would even lead to a car that runs. I had no confidence that the repairs would fix the car and they didn't try to assess it further. But they were very nice and polite. read more

These guys are a bunch of rip off artists. I spent $150.00 for a diagnostics check. They charge more per hour than a dealer does. I took my car back to do the repair when the part was available. Wrong part was sent and was still charged an additional $225.00 without having the repair done. read more

Auto repair companies are supposed to give you a written estimate before they do the job. The last time I took my car to Masaki's at the urging of AAA they didn't give me an estimate until after the work was done. The estimate was on the invoice and it was to the penny on what the bill was charged. I think AAA directs Honda's there because they get a kickback. AAA fixed a starter by hitting it with a hammer. Masaki brothers replaced starter with a rebuilt one. Gas vapor smell in back of car diagnosed by Masaki as beiing caused by a bad charcoal cylinder. Their estimate was $500. (part and installation). I bought the part for less then $100 from a dealer. The dealer installed it for about $170. When I continued to get smell dealer wouldn't back up their work. A former auto shop teacher advised me to get a gas cap ($8). This fixed problem. Jon H. read more

They nickel and dime you for everything I had my Nissan Sentra taken there several years ago to troubleshoot a starter not cranking my engine,They charged me for a diagnostic check and charged me almost $150.00 then they said a ground wire was bad and replaced it,after several days (3) I had my car towed again with same problem,they again did another diagnostic check another $150.00 and replaced my starter for $400.00 + ,several days later same thing I finally gave up and towed my car to a shop in Kalihi recommend by a friend and presto he found a bad fuse and oil pressure (VTEC) switch intermittent and replaced it and the problem never came back again. read more

Not that there ever is a good time for your car to breakdown, but ours went critical the week of New Years. I knew the shop nearest to our house was on a limited mechanic schedule. Since we needed a tow, I stopped by the nearest AAA Hawaii Authorized Repair Center, Masaki's Auto Repair. I met Daryl Masaki and arranged for my car to be worked on once AAA towed it in. Of course being 30 Dec, they wouldn't be able to work on the car until 2 Jan. Daryl called me on 31 Dec to let me know what they would be working on on Thursday. Daryl called me back on Thursday to update me and Friday morning when car was done. When I picked up the car, the car had a heavy vibration. Daryl double-checked under the hood and took me for a short ride. He said it was the car computer still adjusting the idle after the battery being disconnected. The ride smoothed out while we were backing out of the shop and was fine after that. I'm glad I finally found a shop that seems very competent and friendly at the same time (AAA discount doesn't hurt either). FYI - My radiator fan and water pump both went out. Masaki's quickly replaced both along with my top motor mount which I already knew started looking ratty. read more

I own a 2006 Nissan Altima 3.5 SE. Since day one, the car has given me problems. Everytime I took it back to the dealer, something else would break the very next week. If not for Masaki's my car would not be running. I know I can trust my life on the work they do and would take my next car to them first. You can't trust Nissan! read more

ok new brake pads go from anywhere between $45 to $70 max if you only have to change the front brake pads then labor should not take more than 30 minutes ..probably less but hey you got to pay for their time and service plus overhead. $45 half hour so your bill should not be more than $110 to $125 read more

Brought my hybrid here because they advertise "hybrid repair." I told them that the engine reader pulled up a certain code, which they verified. On the third day of them having my car, I decided it was time to pick it up (I have no other transportation.) They said that I may also have transmission problems and need a wheel bearing replaced. Then they suggested that I take the car to the dealer because they "don't work on these types of hybrids much." That cost me $152 for the diagnosis. Not happy. Would not recommend bringing your car here. read more

I did not pass a safety check inspection recently (at Jiffy Lube) on my 2014 Camry due to a cracked tail light. Toyota Servco Kaimuki said they couldn't help me, they referred me to Servco Mapunapuna where I had to leave a message for a call back. As I was driving on Beretania, I saw Masaki's Auto Repair & thought, "why not." Upon entering the shop, I was assisted by Bryson & he was extremely helpful & honest. I thought maybe he was the owner because the customer service was over & beyond. He made several phone calls to find a supply shop for the necessary parts. In the meantime, people were coming & going in the shop, he was tending to them at the same time trying to help me. He found a supplier & informed me when the part could be delivered, how much time it would take to fix my car, an estimate of cost including labor. So I left to run errands & was called at the approximate time given. (In the meantime Servco Mapunapuna called me back & I said, "too late, found someone else to fix my car.") Way to go to the smaller business !! Although there was a complication in the bumper to fix my tail light assembly, it was to no fault of Masaki's. I was also asked if I was a AAA member which I was, so I received a discount. I am very thankful for the excellent customer service & great job done by the entire Masaki's team. I would go back to them as well as refer other people to them. read more
