My boyfriends car started overheating so he took it into Masaki's for a diagnosis. He got his car back the next day and they told him "Inspected and found driver side fan motor bad." They gave him an estimate for a new fan and labor of $600. He decided to wait. Thankfully he did. I took a 12V battery and jumped power straight to both his fan motors and both started spinning without any problem. DO NOT TRUST THESE PEOPLE! I came into Masaki's desperate for help. My car died on Likelike and had to tow it in. When I arrived, I was greeted by Daryl Masaki. Although he seemed very busy, he was able to exaplain the process for diagnostic and repairs. He was able to figure the alternator was bad and was able to fix it in a couple of days. Happy to say that my car is running now and the repairs didn't break the bank. I was very hesitant to take it to the dealership, for fear of the cost or the attempts to get me to trade in. We bought a used Prius for our daughter since she goes to school out here and to our surprise, we were sold a car that was NOT in the greatest condition. We have another Prius as well, same year, in pretty good shape. Anyway, Daryl helped us out knowing we were from the mainland and made it so easy to get things handled. The last few times we had emergencies with her car, Bryson has helped us out. I know that these guys are genuine, caring and are just straight up. He tells us what absolutely needs to be done and what can wait. No b.s. The last major job, which had to deal with her dash light panel and headlights, were pretty pricey but I checked around and they were better than the dealership and on point with the cost of everything in the end. I own a 2005 Prius and when I found out that my so-called extended warranty didn't cover my Hybrid Battery, I started my research on how to get my car fixed. Some research stated that you can replace the "cells" in it other stated just replacing the whole battery with a refurbished one. I immediately called Masaki's and was greeted with a friendly voice at the other end of the phone and they were able to take my car in that day. After the diagnosis tests run on the car, I received the bad news that I indeed needed a replacement battery and with the suggestion of Dave, that is what I did. The work was done on time and within the quoted price! I think they are honest and trustworthy of their work and it's no wonder they have been around for a long time. I'm a Driver's Ed Instructor. My 2012 Toyota Prius with 106,000 miles decided to burn out the hybrid battery 6,000 miles past warranty. I had originally taken it to LXS Hawaii and Chad had given me some replacement options one of which was re-manufacturing of the battery. Upon further research, I found Masaki's Auto Repair. It appears they are the only company that can re-manufacture hybrid batteries locally in Hawaii. I spoke to Darrell, who is the hybrid specialist, and after many conversations, the information that we told me jived with what my research found. Darrell, was very open and honest about everything, invited me to take a look at the how the re-manufacturing process goes, etc. So the decision was made to have him fix my car. After a couple of days, Darrell had some good and bad new for me. Bad news, my hybrid battery pack was so badly worn, that they would not hold up after the re-manufacture. Good news, there was 1 battery pack on island that could be installed. Because of the extreme driving I do, they have never seen a Toyota Prius C need a hybrid battery replace. Darrell got the car up and running in a few days. I would recommend Masaki's to anyone, this is my first time working with them and hope to not see him again for hybrid replacement in the near future. haha Oh, they don't accept American Express Card. read more

I left a review years ago but i dont see it here so I'm reposting my experience. I'm Just like the other 1 star complaints. I too was lied to about what I needed done for my car. I brought my car in because the windshield wipers weren't working. I was told that I needed to replace the windshield wiper motor. I decided not to have them do the repairs because a friend of mine said that he could get the motor for cheaper than what they were charging me. I had my friend order the motor and when he went to install it he found that wiper had become separated from the motor. Nothing was wrong with the motor and all he had to do was reconnect the wiper to the motor. Be very cautious. This experience made me lose all trust in auto repair shops. I would never recommend anyone to this place. read more

I have been to Masaki's a few times over the years, with a couple of different cars. Boy, has this place gone DOWNHILL! They used to provide professional, courteous service, and that has stopped altogether. David Masaki is an unprofessional bully, who takes no professional or personal responsibility, nor does he know how to admit when he has made a mistake. The time before this last horrible visit to Masaki's, I brought it in for a simple oil change and check-up. Because they valued my patronage so little, they kept the car overnight with NO update, and no warning that they would be keeping it all day and into the next day. Normal people need their cars to go to work, and I am no exception. When I voiced my concern to David about how they treated me, he told me "can we just get passed this"?, with NO apology whatsoever. I gave them another chance after that happened, when, in a pinch, I had to have my car towed here when the air condition compressor froze my engine up. They offered good service and did not pressure me into services I did not require at that time, so I chalked up my previous bad experience to a bad day. Well, this last experience I had was the WORST of the worst... the brakes on the car were squeaking, and, like any concerned driver, I addressed the issue. I asked him to check fluids as well. They did the service, and called me to update me, and also let me know that the car wouldn't be available the same day.. all of which I was prepared for. When I finally got the call to pick up the car, we went to go look at an area of concern in the engine, and the hood would not open. I was pretty concerned, and told David, who personally worked on my car, that he must fix it. He said things to me like it was my car's fault, because it was rusty, which it is not. He never once apologized and said wow I'll try to see what is wrong, or anything, he just blamed everyone else. He said he wouldn't even be able to guarantee I could have my car that day, if he kept it to repair the hood latch that I never had any problems with up until then. he said it was a "coincidence" that it just happened to break on his lot. BULLSHIT! He was also saying to fix it, it would cost me an extra 250 dollars. They also cracked one of my rims. DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR HERE!! they will treat you like shit, take all of your hard earned money, never apologize or take any responsibility if they break a part of your car, and they will laugh in your face about it. I went to get my car out of there, and when I got there the hood was open. I took it to another place which looked at the hood latch, and said it was not a problem. Masaki tried to rip me off.. I hope he gets what is coming to him, and i hope it's not your business!!!!!!!! They way over-charge and the service has gone to the toilet. I appreciated the young man who finally actually listened to me, my concerns, and apologized for what damage and duress they had all caused me ,where the very owner would not! David said I was picking on him because I voiced my concerns about how "coincidental" the timing was on my broken hood latch. you will not ever see me recommend anyone to go to your shop ever again. I brought my car here many times out of convenience because I lived within walking distance. Now I realize how expensive they are compared to other places. Their labor charge was almost $90/hour, similar to what dealerships charge. This was years ago so they probably charge much more now... For instance a simple brake pad replacement job cost me $240. This included pads and resurfacing of rotors. 4 years later at Sears I had the same job done PLUS new rotors for about the same cost- $15 evaluation +$60 pads + $80 Labor + $75 rotors = $230. They also jack up the cost of the parts a lot. Mind you all repair shops do this (about 50%) but these guys really take advantage (over 100% in some cases). For example, on my very common car: Water Pump- $91, Timing belt tensioner- $95, Valve cover gasket- $45. These prices were almost 10 years ago (I keep records). Today I could pick up a water pump for $40-60 at Checker's. Cheaper if I order online. In my experience, their work quality is excellent and they aren't rude or socially retarded like some mechanics, but just keep in mind that at their prices, you know they be living a lifestyle only doctors and lawyers can afford. read more

--They Claim you need to fix something that doesn't need to be fixed-- I took my car in to Masaki"s and told them that i thought my windshield wiper motor had burned out. They told me that they would do a quick diagnostics and call me with an estimate for the repairs. They called me back and told me that it was the windshield motor wiper and it would cost me "x" amount of dollars. I decided that I did not want to do it and brought my car to a friend who works on Hondas. We went into the hood of the car and took off the cover to expose the windshield wiper motor to discover that the Motor was still good and the wiper arm had broken from the motor and that was why it wasn't working. I would never take my car back to Masaki's. All I can say is that you cannot trust this place. Who knows how many other times this has happened to other unsuspecting people. read more

Very Friendly and efficient. AAA recommended Original estimate was 270.00 then received a call to state it will go to 300.00 then after the second call it was 410.00. I felt that I had no choice since the work was already started. Called the Toyota dealer after the fact and got an estimate for 300.00. :( Labor was 119/hr. read more

I have never been comfortable with auto repair places...seems you always know someone who got ripped off by any car repair shop! So, when the AAA tow driver recommended Masaki's Auto Repair, I said ok...but with worry! I should not have worried....less than a week after my car had extensive damage done to the under-carriage, I had my car back...100% better!! A few days after getting my car back, we took a family day trip around the island...never a worry about the car!! We were treated with genuine aloha, both on the phone and in person! When the shop was totaling the damages, they made sure to update me several times and worked very closely with my car insurance carrier. They seemed to take pride in the work they did on my car, and as I was expressing my happiness at having it returned, they seemed just as elated....for me!!! I had flashing check engine light . Set up an appointment online to have them fix last friday. They fixed my car and were very professional and had it done when they said they would have it done by. I will definitely go back again. Turned out it was just a bad spark plug, when I asked the service guy if I should replace them and and just do a tune up, he told me that I shouldn't waste the money on doing a tune up as the car was running well and the type of plugs I had in my engine were expensive as long as they were working no need. I really appreciate his level of honesty he could have very easily taken me to the cleaners and he did not. Good job guys!! read more

Took my wife's car in for Airbag and Lic plate light problem. Both are safety check requirements. Cost of new parts turned out to be outrageous. Not worth keeping the car. The owner was very helpful and went out of his way to help me find a more affordable alternative to the new parts that I couldn't afford. In the end, he saved me a lot of money and got the car fixed. Highly recommended. On the down side, their parking lot is always tight and crowded. But I guess that means they are getting a lot of repeat business. read more

My mom couldn't get a safety inspection until she fixed her window so the shop recommend she go to Masaki's. I normally go to Firestone in Aiea but in this case they were going to charge extra for a diagnosis whereas Masaki's was not charging. I talked to Darryl and Lon over the phone while my mom went to the shop in person. They were both very helpful and sincere. They always kept me updated as to the status and with filing a claim with my insurance company. Definitely would recommend them. read more

AWESOME! I first went to Masaki Auto Repair to get a new start up battery for my 2007 Prius. Their prices were reasonable and the turnaround time was very quick. I loved their service so much that I recently went to them for scheduled maintenance servicing on my Prius. They took me in right away and they were done within an hour and a half! The cost for the parts I needed was really reasonable and the cost for labor was the best in town. I saved around $80 in labor costs alone by taking my car to Masaki as opposed to my old car servicing place. I no longer feel like I being ripped off by the car mechanics servicing my car!! If you have a hybrid vehicle and want an honest and reasonable place to take your car, this is definitely the place to go! Highly recommended! read more

This is the kind of place where they will fix everything that could possibly be wrong to repair one problem, just to take your money. I took my 1993 Ford Explorer in to fix the clutch because it was sticking. One place told me it would cost about $800 to repair the clutch. I took it to Masaki's for a second estimate and they told me some bar in the clutch may be the problem, which would only cost about $200. They said they couldn't tell if it was the clutch unless you fixed the bar first. This was about 2 years ago so I can't remember if I was rushed and couldn't wait for an appointment with the other repair shop or if I was just trying to gamble on a cheap fix. Anyway, I went with Masaki's, they did the repair, and it didn't fix anything. The problem still existed. What a waste of money. And to think they are admitting they are incompetent by saying they don't know what is causing the problem unless they fix everything else, leaving only one culprit. Meanwhile, other shops can take a look and tell you what is wrong. Check out McCully Union Station on Beretania instead. read more
