I was happy to see that I could order lamb with any of the Indian dishes, so I ordered the spinach masala with LAMB!! Never thought a fast food place would be able to make lamb so well but they did! I eat here too often to rate it anything less than 5 stars. Recently I have switched to ordering the thai pepper, and I crave this atleast once a week. This review is for the Katy location at Greenhouse and I10. Be aware they do not make the to go orders in the promised time. When in rush, you will not get the food ready in time (even with advance phone order) and may have to leave with out the order. The front desk lady is terribly rude, and does not care if the pick up person has to wait twice as long or walks away with out the order. read more

I love Masala Wok. I was surprised to see all the haters up in the hizzouse but go ahead on,that leaves more for me. Perhaps you didn't notice that this was a casual concept restaurant located in a strip mall next to a Freebirds and a Pizza Place. Not exactly the place to seek out Indian authenticity so appreciate the fact that the food tastes really good. I've had the Lamb Briyani many times, Vindaloo, Chicken Tikka Masala and it's all been delicious. If you are not used to Indian/Asian cuisine then I wouldn't recommend this place (this is regarding all of the bad reviews), however I am used to it and I love this place! I enjoy that they let you order online so that you can pick up if you have a short lunch. I recommend the Samosa's for an appetizer/snack. I've tried a lot of Indian restaurants in town and so maybe I am more discriminating than someone who has not. Their food last night was good, but not excellent. I ordered the chicken tikki masala and it was sweeter and more tomatoey than I've had before. I ordered medium spiciness and wish that I had gone up more. Their chicken had a tough texture. More disappointingly was their basmati rice was dry and not cooked as well as I know it could be. Their naan was crispy and thin and I prefer the fluffy kind. The dish that was very good in our party was the coconut lamb curry. It had a great deep flavor, but that was the first time I have tried that dish so I don't know how it compares to other versions. In short, this place wasn't bad and it was reasonably priced (27.00 for 3 entrees), but the dishes had cooking flaws. I can't remember the name of the dish that my husband ordered (chuttka masala?) which was the chickpea masala, but the lentils tasted very dry and crunchy which I thought meant they were undercooked. read more

Short summary: Fast, cheap, filling, tasty. The butter chicken (with or without spinach) tastes "right" and the naan is the perfect combination of crispy outside, tender inside and overall light and thin. This will bring me back for more. The fact that they are a bit light on their meat portions and don't offer vegetable sides annoys me, but not enough to stop me from visiting repeatedly. Longer review: I've visited 3 times now, all late afternoon or late dinner. There's always a few other patrons, but it's not crazy-busy. That may affect the quality of the food as well as the speed. It usually takes less than 10 minutes from ordering to eating. Probably less than 5 to be honest, but let's err on the safe side. I don't know how these other reviewers are left waiting 20 minutes?!? Considering the price, the food has always been excellent. It's not the best Indian food I've ever had, but so far it's the best and least expensive Indian food I've had in Austin. Where I lived in Canada I was surrounded by Saree shops, so my standards are pretty high. That said, I also paid more for it there. The proportion of ethnically diverse diners is high here, and I usually consider that a good sign. The restaurant itself is also nice and quiet. I've tried chicken butter masala, chicken spinach masala, lamb vindaloo and some stir fried dish whose name escapes me (husband ordered it). All items were ordered "medium". Also got the mango Lassi each time. Chicken Butter Masala - tasty and pretty much what I expect butter chicken to taste like. A bit light on the chicken. Don't like the rice with the caraway seeds. Prefer my rice flying solo. Could do without rice entirely if I was offered a substitute, even if I had to pay more for it. Chicken spinach masala - identical to above, but with spinach added = tastier and healthier lamb vindaloo - not bad, I've had better vindaloo though. stir fry - interesting spices and selection of veggies. Pretty good, but again, small portion of meat. Mango Lassi - Not as fresh as I'd like and the portion size is a bit small. I've had better but this is certainly acceptable. And generally you can have fresh or fast, not both, so there's a compromise here. Also, I've ordered it all three times so obviously it ain't bad. All entrees were hot enough to clear your sinuses but not so hot that it hurt to eat - yay! Naan was better than other naan I've had in Austin, but does not compare favorably to naan I've enjoyed in Canada (it was REALLY good up there). If you're a big carnivore you will be disappointed as their meat portions are a bit meager. I was also disappointed by the lack of curried vegetables on the menu. (can a girl get a side of veggies please?) I'd say it's 3 1/2 stars, but I'm bumping it up half a notch because it's pretty good for fast food. read more

I don;t really care about restaurant concepts as long as the are clean and they concentrate on getting the food right. Masala Wok scores big time on getting the food right. I've had their Lamb Curry, Chicken Korma Masala, and Paneer Vindaloo. All were well above average; each distinctly different and prepared well. Their rice is good and their Nan is excellent. First of all this place wins because they do not use peanuts or peanut oil in anything they make, so my fiance (he is terribly allergic) and I can FINALLY eat Indian food together! Hooray! The experience coming here is as such: my friend and I were heading to lunch and wanted either Indian or Thai. We settled on a place called Pad Thai and set off in search of it. We didn't find it, but we found this place and were too hungry so we stopped. We rolled in and there was almost no one there (it was 1:30). The lady at the counter where you order was VERY nice. She put up with us oohing and ahhing over the menu and even showed us a book of pictures of what everything looked like. I picked the chicken korma masala and took a chance on spicy and my friend chose the samosas and chicken tiki masala medium. The food didn't take very long to come out and looked like it was cooked fresh with each order. My platter of food came out (yeah, it was that big) steaming hot and fresh - half rice, half chicken and veggies in super delicious spicy sauce (but not too hot), and a heaping helping of yummy naan. I tried the sauce on my friends plate (a little bland for me) and a bite of one of his samosas (yum). My only 2 complaints - it was a tinge on the expensive side for lunch, but so worth it. Also, I think someone else said it but the plate was light on veggies. Yeah I ordered chicken but I was told there would be *some* veggies in the party. You know you're doing something right as a business when you can get my "I don't eat Asian food" husband to eat Asian food. In fact, he actually SUGGESTS Masala Wok for dinner on occasion. Mind. Blown. Masala Wok is pretty tasty and has a variety of Asian and Indian meals to choose from. So far we've tried different noodle bowls and fried rice and have yet to be disappointed. Also, it's great that you can order your meal at different spice levels. I go for mild because I'm a wuss, but my husband can order his meal to be super spicy. Masala Wok is one of my favorite discoveries since I moved back to Austin and to the hinterlands north of town. Situated in a little strip across from Target and next to Freebirds, a pizza place and a sub shop, it's a little hard to find but definitely worth keeping an eye out for. I've had the yellow curry fried rice with tofu and the chicken korma and neither disappointed. The portions are big (I always ask for a to go box when they bring the food out and put half of it in before I start eating and get two meals out of it.), the prices are small and the taste is... tasty. My only complaint is that I've been there for dinner when there were less than a handful of customers and it took longer than it did to get my food when they were slammed at lunch. That just means I have more time to enjoy my Kingfisher, though. read more

Great setting for a quick lunch. Very friendly staff. I ordered the Lamb Kheema Fried Rice and it was great. Perfect consistency of rice and the flavor was just right. I have been coming to Masala Wok for the last 12 years and have not had a bad experience. My favorite dishes there are the Tandoori Wrap, Chicken 65 and the Veg. Manchurian. Their kitchen accommodates special requests to adjust spice levels or leave out certain ingredients. Will definitely visit in the future. read more

I'm Indian-American and I remember a few years ago, I was in a Panda Express and I thought to myself, "Why doesn't Indian food have a fast food equivalent?". Well, this is it. Masala Wok, like any ethnic fast food is inauthentic. I know people here have said otherwise but trust me, it's not authentic. Now the ingredients they use are authentic as are flavors but a "Chicken tikka wrap" is not normal fare. Service: The service is great. They bring the food to you. They aren't rushing you even after they close. The food is great tasting. The prices are a little bit much for "fast food" but I guess the portions are not bad. Actually they are pretty big. This place was actually one of the few places I miss about Austin. I really enjoyed their food. Chicken 65 was always my favorite. I liked it spicy definitely. The staff was always super friendly and lit up the moment I walked in. Very nice people. I would say stick to the Indian food. The Asian/Chinese food is kinda vanilla. Also, it's pretty affordable to eat there somewhat often. My only complaint was that the Nan bread was a bit inconsistent. Sometimes it would be perfect. Since this place opened up we've always been going there... However, we've only re-ordered one dish over and over again and that's the Grilled Chicken Tandoor Wrap. Now, I'm no expert when it comes to Indian food... so I can't say how authentic it is or not. BUT, I can say that the Chicken Tikka Masala and the Manchau soup were delicious! I've been twice now because I couldn't get the yummy flavor of the Chicken Tikka outta my mind. The first time, the chicken was a little dry, but the outstanding flavor of the sauce more than made up for that. The portions are pretty generous- I had two full meals out of it. The second time I went, I decided to try the Manchau soup along with the Chicken Tikka to try and get some veggies in my belly, and enjoyed it very much! Worst Asian food EVER! We ordered the Orange Chicken with brown rice and Broccoli Chicken with vegetable rice with a Sweet Corn Soup. The soup tasted like sweet and sour soup but was very bitter. We did not like it. The Orange Chicken was very dry, had very little sauce and almost no flavor, plus I found a hair in one of my chicken pieces. The Broccoli Chicken wasn't too bad since the chicken was moist and the broccoli was good but the rice had a weird flavor and texture. It was more of a long grain skinny rice. My girlfriend kept talking about this place, so I decided that I'd try it out with her one night. I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting much because it is a fast casual restaurant. I was definitely flawed in my thinking, because this place was pleasantly good. One thing that I really liked was that when you order something extra spicy it's actually extra spicy. Far too often do places advertise their food as spicy only for it to fall short. That is not the case here. The cafeteria feel of the place could be improved upon, but I'm sure it's pretty efficient at lunch time. I got the Paneer Tandoori Wrap, which was surprisingly good. It came with some Tikka Masala sauce, which wrapped the whole thing up well. The meal also had a mind boggling amount of rice on the plate ... which I wasn't really sure how I was supposed to eat because I was out of Tikka Masala by the time I finished the wrap. I'm a newbie to Indian Food, and went to Masala Wok for my first attempt. I can't vouch for how truely "authentic" it is, but the food is awesome, regardless! It's obvious who the manager (maybe even owner) is, and he is super friendly. You'll be craving the Chicken Lollipops as a replacement to your standard chicken wings, and I'd recommend the Malia Kofta to anyone - its delish, even without meat! Yeah that bald guy who gives a look as though you stole his car...Want to use all the bad words I know in English and Hindi on this idi...( Yes he is an idi....) . His wife is better when she is at the counter taking orders. My workplace is very close to this place. So I have been there many times and the workers there are very nice and polite. This owner mf needs a lesson or two on customer service. Strike 1 : Does not greet, no eye contact, presents he is talking to someone else when taking my order Strike 2 :Does not even process the order . Puts my credit card in an outdated reader and uses his eyes to tell me to each out to the end of the table to pull it out. Strike 3 : Does not even process the order and let's me and my colleague waiting. Then we had to go the counter and the staff apologized and processed the order. I have a three strike policy and this own place is out. I have been a regular here until I met this s.head. Food is okay and no value for money. This is not Indian food, a common misconception. It is Indo-Chinese, a true hybrid of Indian and Chinese which is quite popular in India but has yet to become mainstream here in the states.
