Pretty decent indian/chinese food here for a small chain. My go to dish is the vegetable tikka masala which is a creamy tomato based sauce with sauteed vegetables. They can do the sauce vegetarian which is what I like or with meat...the sauce is just delicious with naan. I'd also suggest the American Chop Suey noodles which is a sweet/sour/spicy sauce with vegetables in it covered with a bed of crispy noodles. Overall this place is a pretty decent, casual indo-chinese fusion place which will be wallet friendly...check it out! read more

I have no idea why I've neglected this place for so long. It could be that I gave up on restaurants in North Austin a long time ago. Either way, I now have restored hope. So first off, the people that work their are awesome. They're extremely friendly and helpful when picking items off the menu. That's always a plus when you're entering the unknown. As for the food, it's packed with flavor and doesn't disappoint! I'm a fan of spicy foods so being in a restaurant that serves Indian and Thai is like being in paradise. For those that don't care for spicy food, no worries, you can customize the spiciness (no excuses). At this moment, I can't say that I have a favorite dish yet since everything I've tried has been equally tasty. However, as a vegetarian that occasionally misses meat, I'm always on the look out for meat-like dishes. The Malai Kofta would be that dish. The Paneer resembled sausage balls and sure enough it had the texture and taste of meat. Also, their portion sizes are pretty big, so I was pretty happy about having left overs. I still have my favorites for Thai and Indian, but Masala Wok will definitely get my business when I don't want to drive towards Central Austin. read more

The idea of quick Indian food enticed me to try Masala Wok this week. I found the facilities clean and the decor contemporary. The staff was limited--consisting of a man and woman who seemed to be managers/owners, one expo/food runner, and three kitchen workers. These guys were working hard, but they all had smiles on their faces the whole time I was there and were consistently friendly to all the customers. This is an informal establishment, so you place your order at the register, take a number, and your food is brought to your table. I should have called ahead since I wanted To-Go, but I didn't think of it, so I had to sit around for 15-20 min since I arrived at the peak of the Tech Ridge lunch rush. The menu features Indian and Chinese options, but the owners seemed to be Indian, so I thought that might be the better choice. Entrees ranged from $7-9, appetizers $5, and soups $2. Since I had to eat fast, I just ordered the Masala Wrap with chicken. It consisted of shredded raw vegetables and a minuscule portion of tandoori chicken wrapped in naan and served with raita and rice. The wrap itself didn't seem to contain any sauce or seasonings, but I did get a ramekin of warm orange colored sauce (curry?) on the side. Everything tasted fresh, but I would have liked more protein for $7.99 + tax. Overall, the meal was not bad and the staff was hospitable, but I'm not in any hurry to go back and try the place again. I would rename this place: Masala Bok (fyi, bok means fecal matter in Turkish). The sweet corn soup should be renamed "corn soup with chicken bits straight from a can". The Chicken Tikki Masala (a signature dish) is decent enough but slathered in so much sauce with so little meat. I got it "hot", and it was bearable...i.e. mild more so. It runs about $8-9 per entree. You can get FAR better Indian fare in Austin for that price. The one thing they did relatively right is the Naan. It's like fast food Indian, which means it's palatable, very filling (i.e. unhealthy), and the decor of a fast-food place. It does in a pinch. read more

One day in the future I will be able to look back wistfully upon weeks of wandering around India, seeing the sights, hearing the noises and tasting the flavors. When that day comes, I might be ballsy enough to try to comment on the "authenticity," of any food that's not macaroni and cheese. Until that day comes, I'll just Yelp about damn good food. My boyfriend suggested we try something different for lunch one day, as he often does to break of the monotony of our Office-Space-type jobs. Enter Masala Wok. I'm writing this review after what has been my 5th trip there, and expect many more to come. The place is clean, cozy and quick. Their Tikka Masala, as another poster has observed, does in fact have crack in it. I've tried to order other things as well, with no success. It's creamy, tangy and bold. There is AMPLE sauce, all the better for eating the rice and naan, my dears. An appetizer has crept in here and there. They were great as well. As a side note, I think the woman who seems to own this place is pretty awesome. She is always polite, to the point and stands at the register when no one is there like a queen presiding over her efficient, high quality court, carefully observing the happiness or lack thereof of her patrons. YUM! YUM! YUM! This is my favorite take out in Austin. Prior to finding Masala Wok my ace in the hole for not cooking was pizza. My husband never says not to pizza and I have added Lamb curry to his no refusal list. The food is always consistent fast and fresh tasting. I have also turned to them for last minute food for entertaining. I got samosas for a girls night and it was a huge hit. We ordered a variety of items when we have last minute family come over and served everything family style. Again it was a hit with everyone. I will say the Indian food is the best part of the menu. The Asian food is good but their Indian is amazing. Though not on the menu they offer garlic naan that is a great twist to their regular naan. read more

Holy crap. I've found the solution to food indecision. Whenever my wife and I are stuck on "What do you feel like tonight?" and then "Hmm. I dunno... what do YOU feel like?" We ALWAYS choose Masala! They are incredible. The Paneer 65 appetizer is possibly laced with crack, it's so good. I could seriously eat a couple of orders of this alone, not even kidding. We've taken to ordering two Paneer 65's so we don't have to share! haha. So tasty. The Tikka Masala with paneer never fails to delight, and the Korma Masala with Chicken (spicy) is quiet possibly heaven on earth. We've tried almost all the Indian and Thai and these two are our 'regular', but everything else is amazing too. If you like curry, naan, Indian/Thai food, and generally delicious meals... TRY MASALA! Their service is phenomenal. EVERY time we go into either this location or the one by the Domain, the wait staff is incredibly friendly and nice and come around during the meal to ask how everything is. Keep in mind, this isn't a waiter style place, it's a 'get your food, self serve drinks' kind of place and they still bother to come around and check that everything is good for you. Great job Masala. Not only is dining there wonderful, but we order for pickup all the time and it's always SUPER PIPING HOT when we get it home about 10-15 minutes away. So great to get home and unwrap the naan and open your meal and still feel like it's fresh out of the bowl/pan/pot (whatever they cook in! haha). They are also incredibly awesome with this new promotion on their receipts. You can text the number, rack up some points and eventually get $10 off an order. It only takes about 4 trips for us to rack up the discount, so it's wonderful and easy to get. No punch cards, no call in, just text a number and boom a response in less than ten minutes. In my culinary brainspace, there's two types of Indian food -- the kind you sit down and plunk a wad of cash for on special occasions (lovingly referred to as Teji's) and then the kind you run in and grab for dinner when it's 8pm and you don't feel like driving to Round Rock after a long day at work or in the field. Masala Wok is clearly the latter, but with the bonus of Indo-Chinese cuisine, so whether you want lamb curry or gobi manchuria you can't really go wrong. The ambience is definitely quick-service formica so you're not going to come here for the suit-and-salwar-kameez experience, but I've never been steered wrong by the folks here. For reasonably fast and shockingly affordable Indian and Indo-Chinese food, there's really two places I go, and since the other place doesn't know how to tune down spice for my gringo missus, this is our current best option of Indian takeout. I would like to give props to the management, as they kept the takeout window going (and efficiently so) even during the hosting of a very large private meeting of businessfolk at the franchise. I ordered the marichi masala and it was okay but only after I added a lot of seasoning mainly salt and some chili pepper that I had to ask from the kitchen. The rice was kind of bland as well and needed seasoning but it tastes like it was made today. this was not memorable and there's no reason why I would want to go back give it all to options in the neighborhood from more authentic tasting Indian food. One of the biggest voids in food here in the Austin area I have found is with Indian food. It's not that there are not a handful of places, but compared to some other ethnic stuff, it's pretty slim. I dropped by Masala Wok the other night with an open mind and stomach and decided to look past the fact that it is in the middle of the burbs in chain restaurant heaven. The menu had some familiar looking Indian dishes on it, but some that looked to be hybrid type dishes or maybe the restaurants attempt to modernize things a bit. I ordered the Korma Masala since I'm a huge Chicken and Lamb Korma fan. I grabbed it take out style and got home to see a nice sized portion of food waiting and even some nan thrown in for good measure. The dish itself was above average, but nowhere near as good as I am used to from most Indian restaurants back in the Cincinnati area. Maybe I'm a bit spoiled. The nan was bland and dry though, I will avoid that next time. Overall though, I liked it well enough to return, but I was certainly not blown away. read more

One of the things I hate most in life is driving, and one of my favorite things about Austin is that I don't have to drive to get anywhere. I barely use a quarter of a tank of gas a week. A large portion of that is driving ten miles each way to Masala Wok. Masala Wok isn't authentic Indian food and doesn't pretend to be. But the food it does make is affordable, filling and addictive. Samosas have a solid taste and texture. Spring rolls are overpriced for what you get- any Vietnamese or Chinese place will give you much more your money. Naan is average compared to other places in town like Shalimar, but it does make things easy to pick up as compared with them. But the star of the menu is the entrees. I've loved everything I've tried- from the grilled chicken Tikka (although I had to add sambal to bring it to the level of spice I liked) to the blazing noodles. But the star, the absolute star of the menu is Chicken 65. They take boneless cubes of chicken breast, stir fry them in curry leaves and green chiles, and add in a hot red sauce which remains a mystery to me. And if you beg them, they'll crank up the heat for you, making it one hell of a meal. Every week, without fail, they get at least $10 from me. I can't stop. read more

We try something new each time and have not been let down yet. Those that have only tried one thing, should not base their opinions on that alone. Preface: I have no experience with Indian food. Honestly, when I think Indian cuisine, I think curries and spicy sauces. Sad truth but at least I've been blessed with a stomach that's constantly in search of good food, which Masala Wok happily serves. We erred on the side of safety and tried the Tikka Masala and Korma Masala. Both cost more than I wanted to spend, but at least it was portioned appropriately. One order could easily last two or three meals. Our first few minutes were spent in silence because the food was just so tasty. The rice was good and could have done without their dry naan. I'd love to try it all with brown rice too. Nothing but great things can be said about the staff, who were all friendly and helpful. Our food came out in reasonable time and the ambiance was comfortable and clean. While there seems to be some debate on whether it qualifies as authentic Indian cuisine, it's certainly a good introduction to those who aren't familiar. read more

So I never try new food but my mom recommended this place and after a long day, I wasn't going to be the one to argue. So, I went and got take out. The girl that answered the phone and took the order was pretty rude as far as customer service goes. "Is that all?" Uh... Yeah I guess. I get there to pick it up and get the standard "name?" "Kara." So I pay.... Another girl walks out and sets down a bag. First girl says to me "There's your food," and walks away to the back. Ohhhh... Alright thanks. But besides the rude service (I happen to know a lot of people who would like a job so if the place paying you money is just sooooo terrible and hard for you to be nice to people who are paying their hard earned money, I know someone who will gladly work for money), I really enjoyed the food, which is kinda what we're all looking for anyway, right? I got the butter masala chicken with garlic naan bread and an order of veggie spring rolls (more like fried egg rolls but hey they're good either way), and I enjoyed every bit of it. It's a large amount of food for $9 and will be at least another meal, if not two! We payed $32 for two entrees and two appetizers and to me that's a great deal! Masala Wok is almost like fast food Indian with some Chinese thrown in. The chicken 65 is a crowd favorite but I prefer the chicken tikka masala. They serve a nice variety of appetizers. After my second visit, I feel like this is a 4 star experience for the following reasons; 1.) Solid food; So while I've had much better Indian and Asian food at other restaurants but...keep in mind that this isn't a 'sit down' restaurant with a waiter and white tablecloths. 2.) the prices reflect $9 for a warm plate of Indian food instead of $13+tip? Yes, please! 3.) the wait for food isn't usually very long, 4.) there is no pressure to eat and leave quickly 5.) Service is quick and friendly and store is clean. It was 9PM and a Sunday, but we were in the process of moving and lost track of time. When we discovered we were hungry, it was way too late for anything to be open! I hopped on Yelp and filtered it for "Open Now"... Masala Wok was one of about 3 things that popped up in our area and was the only one in the non-fast food persuasion. We drove over not knowing what to expect, really, though the reviews had our hopes high. I've never been so happy to have Yelp, ever. For a last minute meal we had some delicious Lamb Vindaloo and Chicken Tikka Masala. The hostess/server, I have no idea what her name was, was SO sweet and recommended stuff for us to try, hence the lamb. It was all delicious and the Vindaloo had just the right amount of spice. Our food came out pretty fast and it was really crowded for a Sunday at 9PM! The best part - it was SO quiet. Not creepy quiet, but no overpowering music. I'm deaf, I love when people have to yell over music because usually it makes it loud enough for me to hear in a loud place, but no competing noise other than the awesome Bollywood videos on the TV next to us? I don't post too many reviews, but I felt compelled to give Masala Wok Tech Ridge some love. My family and I have been eating at this location for over a decade. There have definitely been some changes over the years, but I can honestly say that I have never had a bad meal here. I've had most everything on the menu at this point. A few things have disappeared from the menu that I sorely miss (basil noodles, I loved you so!), but what is there is great. Yes, it's fast casual, not fine dining, so if someone goes in thinking that it's super fancy, well it's on them if they are disappointed. And frankly, I think their prices are quite reasonable for the quality of food you get. It's expensive to eat out in Austin anywhere you go! Got take out from here last Friday. The food was delicious and, best of all, a lot cheaper than other Indian food places! First I want to point out that the information on yelp is wrong. They don't do delivery directly (let alone online ordering) and the address is different as well. But once we got that sorted out, the rest of the experience was smooth sailing. Second, the food is crazy cheap for Indian food. $9 for chicken tikka masala, rice, AND naan?! Normally you pay at least $15 for that at an Indian restaurant. My boyfriend got the lamb curry and we also got an order of paneer and vegetable manchurian because I love manchurian! Total bill came to $30 which is pretty reasonable. Given the price I wasn't expecting a lot of food but they actually give you a good bit. The whole thing lasted us 4 meals. I also loved the take out trays! They had compartments so the rice stayed on one side and the curry on the other which made for perfect lunch packs the next day. The chicken tikka masala was delicious. The lamb curry was also good but a bit spicier than the medium level we asked for (and definitely spicier than the tikka masala medium level spiciness). The paneer manchurian was great, but normally my favorite is the cauliflower which was good but I've had better. Overall a really good take out place! One of my favorite restaurants! When I could I went here often. Their service is quick and friendly and you get tons if food! If you're new to Indian food I recommend the butter masala with chicken, but if you wanna try something interesting, the coconut curry is very tasty. I've had three dishes here, and I'm basically addicted. First time out, I had the Mughalai Style Dum Biryani with lamb, a heaping portion of flavorful orange-colored rice with chunks of moist lamb. I also ordered a side of garlic nan (good stuff) and chicken malai tikka kabobs, which were a little dry, but ok. Second time, I decided on the Chicken 65, which would be a great starter for those that aren't really into Indian food. The meal consisted of good, fluffy white rice and small, red chunks of spicy grilled chicken, and nan. Satisfying but nothing fancy. My favorite meal so far was my third, the Southern Curry with lamb. You can adjust the spiciness as you see fit. I ordered the medium heat and was completely satisfied -- hot enough to taste, not hot enough to linger. The sauce was spicy and robust, with a strong chili flavor, and it went well with a pile of soft, tasty rice and buttery nan. The staff is fantastic, btw. So friendly. The thing about Masala Wok is that the dishes feel authentic, but much simpler than what you might find in some Indian restaurants. This is the kind of food I'd expect to get served in someone's home (though the atmosphere of the restaurant is totally strip mall -- not homey at all). Good stuff. read more
