Hit the spot for a random afternoon craving for sushi. Wait time was longer than usual. 30 minutes for 3 or 4 items which all arrived at the same time. Had to remind my server about my miso soup which should've come first... like in the first 10 minutes. A robot brings you your food - my food came from the server. Really nice guy -- English wasn't great so it was difficult to communicate but nice guy nonetheless. Ambiance on brand for chino, Rowland, west co restaurant.
The restaurant is located in the same plaza with CVS at the corner of Las Tunas and San Gabriel. Parking was easy to find. We arrived on a Sunday night and were seated immediately. A friend suggested that he wanted to try this place. Since I recently got back from Japan, I was definitely not ready to pay US prices so it was definitely $$$ to me. Love the salmon, ikura and uni, the food was super fresh and tasty. Love having the seaweed to make mini handrolls. My daughter got the kids teriyaki and only ate the gyoza and oranges. The chicken was on the dry end but it may have been better if it was eaten when it was still hot and fresh. This would not be our go to for any other apps, sushi, or yakitori. Would come back for the bowls.
Wa Chirashi has the best presentation! Fresh seafood and yummy sushi rice. Udon is big portion and good deal. This restaurant also has a good selection of rolls. We tried their caterpillar roll and didn't disappoint. The yellowtail kama is huge! Service is friendly and attentive. Parking in a lot.
This restaurant is underrated! Had lunch on a Saturday at 12pm and there was surprisingly no one there, but it was nice that we were seated right away. Service was great- very attentive and friendly, and frequently made sure we had everything we needed. We ordered the 15 piece sashimi for 2 people and the chef was kind enough to add a few extra pieces for us since we were sharing. - Omakase moriawase: 10/10 fish is very fresh with a nice selection. Came with a spoon of a green onion sauce which reminded me of the sauce that comes with hainan chicken, but with a kick of yuzu and wasabi. It was delicious! Also very pretty presentation! - Chicken karaage (not pictured): 10/10 very light, crispy and juicy. Came with a lemon-y aioli which was a perfect pairing. It's a little pricey, but I will definitely be back to try other options!
Ordering a Toro Uni Bowl, good enough but could be better... given less than the pictures shown from Yelp. Could be costing increasing... Services were good enough and efficient, there's miso soup came with... The decor is very elegant for a modern Japanese sushi restaurant.... Hope they do well...
Warning - service is slow. There's about 8 tables total tonight and only 1 server. She wasn't very efficient sadly. We ordered one of the Chirashi bowls to share and asked what fish was on the menu today. She said different everyday that it's the Chef's choice. We said.. well, what is todays's list and she said she didn't know. Disappointing. If she's new, that's fine, but they should at least have another sever help out. Our Chirashi bowls came with complimentary miso soup. Average soup, on the saltier side. Fish is not bad. Most of the fish tasted like quality. There was uni with caviar, salmon, toro, ebi with fried head, scallop, tamago, hibachi, salmon roe, and a couple others. A little pricey for the bowl compared to most other places I usually go to. $55 for the large bowl. Not sure if I'll come back. Maybe in the future if they work on the service as the fish was good.
This was my first time here and we went at a weird off hour time so that we didn't have a wait. I ordered a lot of the usual stuff I love at izakayas - grilled beef tongue, pork belly, the spicy tuna crispy rice, sausage. But I was intrigued by the yuzu salmon carpaccio, the deep fried squid and miso cod so we ordered that, too, with a Kirin beer and a rice based beer (I said "Ichiban" but maybe they mistook that for a different beer for my husband). The place is located in a mini-mall and had a grand opening not long ago (hence the sign outside). It's small-ish but they do have bar counter seating so if you're a party of one, you can probably succeed in getting a spot. I have to say that the star here is the spicy tuna crispy rice. I'm not into avocado on my crispy rice but the bottom rice ingredient is CRISPEH like the rice you find at the bottom of any rice cooker that families fight for. The spicy tuna is legit spicy with no mayo to ease it down. The yuzu salmon carpaccio was our fave because it did include a very fragrant olive oil drizzled on it to match with the acidity of the yuzu and the salmon was not cooked by the acid so it wasn't a ceviche. The cooked items were of note as well. I loved the way they did the beef tongue and flavored it with the yuzu kosho as they were grilling it so you didn't have to have the kosho tableside. It was already infused when you ate it off the skewer. The arabiki sausage was nicely sweet; alas no hot mustard. One of the cheffy standouts was the miso cod; both sweet and savory. It's a pricey item since it's $20 for a small portion but it pairs so nice with a shared bowl of rice. I like this place and I hope it sticks around. I think the owner speaks limited English but she does have waiters that help you out and the staff are all very attentive.
Fresh, high quality food and friendly service. Super clean and parking in lot available. Great value compared to Bay Area. Ever since baby came along, I appreciate even more restaurants with no wait! Food: Yuzu salmon-my favorite dish of the meal. Bright yuzu flavor and fresh salom. Wa Chirashi- all of the fish selection were fresh and delicious. I devoured this! Ika geso- at first bite I wasn't a fan but once the sauces were mixed together that changed everything. Unique yuzu flavor but I've had better elsewhere. Complementary miso soup pretty standard.

The sushi here is solid. You get lots of pieces and thicker pieces of fish for a good price. My favorite roll was the sunset roll! My family and I also ordered the tempura ice cream for dessert. It wasn't the best tempura ice cream we've ever had. It could have had a crispier exterior and the ice cream didn't have a strong matcha flavor.

The waiter was ecstatic in greeting us and going over the menu options and specials. He explained all of the omakase options along with what were recommended and alcohol selection as well. We really appreciated that! I ended up getting the Toro Uni Bowl which was delicious and tasty! The uni was so fresh where as the toro and bowl itself had such a smooth and unique flavor profile. I would definitely order this again! I also cared to try their handrolls. I ordered the salmon handroll and the yellowtail handroll. The salmon handroll was good however, I was a bit surprised about the lettuce that was in it. I never have had lettuce in a handroll before and I ended up just taking it out. The yellowtail handroll was fantastic though and the portion of the fish was great. Overall, a wonderful and wholesome experience at Wa Izakaya, I'd recommend my friends and family members to come here if they wanted a nice dinner!
Excellent authentic Japanese izakaya restaurant. The biggest saba (grilled mackerel) I've ever seen! Huuuuge. I had the katsu - excellent. My daughter had the BBQ beef skirt teriyaki and I tried a piece and it was delicious. Service was awesome too. The couple who I believe own/run the place were super nice and gracious. A big TV with NBA basketball on - what more could you ask for?
We were probably the last customer before the restaurant closed. We were so happy that they seated us. I was stabbing and ordered the sashimi late. My son ordered the California rolls. Our server was very nice. I'm sure she wanted to go home but still served us without trying to rush us to finish eating faster. We got the chicken skewers and those were tender, juicy, and tasty. My son and I had a great dining experience

Very impressed with this place and the quality of the omakase! Came here for my boyfriend's birthday and we got their omakase set to share between the both of us and wow the quality of all of this was so good! Everything was fresh and didn't taste too fishy! We also gave the beef short ribs nabe a try, wasn't too impressed by the soup base but the meat falls off the bone! Love how they slow cooked it and it was delicious! Definitely coming back for more next time! read more
The chef and server always greets us with a smile and gets us seated immediately wherever we prefer :) Plenty of free parking in the plaza. Clean tables and lots of seating available. We ordered the: Sashimi Moriawase 28pcs which was $95 and included : 9 different premium fish and sweet shrimp and uni. Our order came with complimentary miso soups, which is the perfect start before devouring all this deliciousness. The salmon, yellow tail belly, scallop, octopus, surf clam, sweet shrimp, sea bass, toro with gold flakes, uni, and caviar were all very fresh and delicious! The sushi rice with roe was on the house and was the perfect pairing with kizami wasabi. Everything was soo good, it makes you want more! I'm excited to try their Iunch specials next time where they have discounted blue crab uni and salmon uni ikura bowls! Thanks for a delicious and great experience :) we'll be back soon! read more

Honest review here... I really wanted to like this place with all the positive reviews but it fell a bit short, at least for the lunch specials ordered. 3.5 for food but 4 stars for nice service. Quality is the biggest room for improvement. - Sushi plate: Rice leaned a little hard. The spicy tuna handroll's seaweed was also a little tough to bite off. - Chicken and beef teriyaki bento lunch specials: Both beef and chicken weren't as tender as we hoped. A bit tough due to overcooking. Portion was acceptable but I can find similar places that do a better job. Service is very nice and it's a casual spot, so definitely fits the bill as a neighborhood joint, but I could find other similar places like Ichima that have good quality if you're looking for bentos. The menu is very extensive, but I'm not sure if the sushi quality of what I had convinces me to try the omakase section of the menu. read more
This is the second time i've been to Wa Izakaya, but this is the first time being at the SGV location. Its smaller shop with indoor seating and a custom painting on the wall. Parking is also limited outside. We had the pleasure of being served by Daniel and he was attentive. My friend and I ordered a couple of items and all tasted great. We really enjoyed the kushiyaki and the rolls. Will be back in the future for their Wa Chirashi . read more

We don't live around the area, but we do stop by to pick up some Asian groceries because where we live there isn't much variety. We decided to stop by here. They just opened, and we went off of the photos and reviews on yelp. The positive reviews are true about this sushi restaurant. We order the Omakase Sushi, Japanese scallops, and soft shell crab. They were all delicious and flavorful. We obviously enjoyed the nigiri's the most. They gave us green tea ice cream with whip cream and it was nice to end the amazing lunch experience. Will come back again and highly recommend. read more

The quality of the food is simply top-notch!! The sushi rolls are super fresh, the noodles are made to order and all their fried appetizers are piping hot and fresh. And not to mention the bento boxes which are one of the best I've tried! I recommend this place 100% read more

Came for the lunch special toro Uni bowl! Toro melted in my mouth, Uni was good quality, sushi rice was on point. Also got the Alamo roll which was great. Very empty on a weekend lunch this place needs more love! read more

Located in a plaza, easy to find parking. Place is very clean and quiet with aesthetic Japanese decor. Server was very friendly and attentive and asked us if we needed anything frequently. Yuzu Salmon- strong yuzu flavor and salmon was fresh. Ika Geso- fried well with batter that wasn't too thick. Dipping sauce paired well, believe it had yuzu also. Blue crab Uni Ikura bowl and Chirashi- very fresh fish/seafood with seasoned furikake rice with. I also love when fresh wasabi is provided. Highly recommend this spot! read more
Ordered a few sushi rolls to share. They were all pretty standard. I enjoyed the premium rolls more than the classic rolls, although nothing really stood out. My only major complaint is that the rice was not sticky at all, so the rolls would fall apart. Freshness of the ingredients seemed fine. Our server was friendly. read more

5/5 stars! The quality of the food was spectacular. We ordered a variety of appetizers, rolls, salmon salad, and toro bowl. Everything was fresh and delicious. The salmon salad had fresh thick chunks of salmon that were fatty and delicious. Toro uni bowl was the best thing ever and came with seaweed on the side to wrap it with. Spicy tuna rainbow was fresh and filling. Service was great. It's a mom and pop shop so things take time bc everything is made to order. New sushi spot when we are back in SGV. read more

Great food! Their miso eggplant appetizer is the best eggplant dish I ever had. We got the yellowtail jalapeño and the albacore with crispy onion and they were both perfectly sliced and delicious. The rolls were great too. Service was prompt and friendly. And place is cozy, perfect for gatherings with friends. I just wished they had cocktails! We ended up drinking some of their bottled drinks, but it would have been nice to have more variety of alcoholic drinks. Overall it was an excellent experience and I know I will be going back for more! read more

I was a long-time patron of Shinju and was sad to see it closed. I did not think Taberu (the namesake of the previous restaurant to Wa Izakaya and still the name on the sign) was a worthy successor. However, I was elated to find Wa Izakaya had taken over Shinju's previous location and wanted to give it a try and I'm really glad I did! The restaurant has been made over from Shinju's time (a year ago) and it's very cute. There's a lot of homages to Japan with samurai art and cherry blossom decor. Overall, interior is bright, clean, and cheery. We were seated immediately around 6pm for dinner. There seemed to be only one server and one sushi chef, but we had no issues with service from either end. Our server was very attentive and made sure to come back with more water, ginger, and wasabi when we ran low, without us having to ask. She also overheard us debating about ordering an extra roll and came back to ask us if there was anything else we wanted to add. We ordered the Sunset Salmon roll, the Seared Albacore with Soft-Shell Crab, the Dragon roll, a spicy salmon hand roll, a spicy scallop hand roll, and an ika geso. They were also very kind and gave us a tuna maki roll on the house. The salmon was very fresh, although I wasn't a huge fan of the lemon rinds on the roll. The soft-shell crab was perfectly cooked, with the crab meat being sweet and the shell being crunchy and warm. The unagi was extremely decadent and was one of the better dragon rolls I've had in my life. Both hand rolls were fresh and the seaweed was crunchy. The ika geso was perfectly breaded and fried. Overall, if you're looking for a nice sushi spot that isn't AYCE or super fancy omakase, I'd highly recommend Wa Izakaya. I'll definitely be back and would love to try their omakase set next time. read more

Came here for Sunday dinner and the place was clean with a nice, quiet ambiance. Server was friendly and provided his recommendations, as well as being very accommodating to our group. We haven't tried their original Alhambra location yet, but this location was spot on. We ordered the Yellowtail Cilantro roll, Rattlesnake roll, Sushi Moriwase (15pcs), Ika Geso (fried squid legs), and mixed tempura. Quality of fish was great overall. An older lady (possibly the owner/manager) provided us with house-made Yuzu sorbet on the house for dessert. I'd highly recommend this place and will be giving the Alhambra location a try as well! read more

Although every time I've come there's no crowd and I'm worried they'll one day close this location, I've been here so many times now... will continue to sing my praises. Most recently I tried something off the sushi menu, their Korean Short Rib Nabe. The broth was the perfect balance of rich and clean, it hit the spot. I was so excited when the short rib meat fell off the bone, and plenty satisfied with the quality and tenderness of the beef too. I'm never gonna tire of their omakase quality and flavor combos. Their lunch specials are so worth it as well. read more
