Came here after seeing a movie and we were so excited to finally try this location since it's close by to us. We were greeted by a nice lady at the register so that was a great way to start the experience. The ambiance was your typical fast casual town center vibe. We ordered the Bar Harbor lobster roll, Maryland crab vegetable soup & the New England clam chowder. The lobster roll was decent. I'd give it a 7/10. Comparing it to the Reston location, this one lacked flavor, even with the butter. They give you the choice between chilled or warm and we chose warm. Both soups were okay. I'd give them both a 6/10. It was more watery than I'm use to but the taste wasn't bad. I probably wouldn't order it again though. All in all, the food was okay. Truthfully, I would say 3 1/2 stars....The service was awesome! The woman who waited on us couldn't have been nicer. She was wonderful. The restaurant still has that just opened feel. Everything is neat and clean. The restaurant is well organized and it didn't take long to get our food. The lobster meat was just okay. I ordered the lobster sandwich meal with the larger piece of the lobster meat. The portion size was great. The taste was lacking, even with melted butter on it. I also ordered the tater tots. Here is where I am a little bit picky. I like my tater tots hot and crispy. These were neither. They were warm and on the softer side. They tasted okay, but not hot and crunchy tots. So, while there was nothing wrong with our meals, if you are paying $30 for a sandwich and sides, you want it to be outstanding and memorable. I ordered the Connecticut Roll combo and fellow Elite Yelper Joy B. accompanied me on this visit and got herself the Bar Harbor combo. Sadly, we weren't impressed by our rolls and have had far better. The lobster was supposed to be hot, but it wasn't. It was also bland and dry. Although it was served with butter, it likely would have tasted better served with a sauce and seasoning such as Old Bay to make it less dry and to enhance the flavor. The best part of my sammie was the roll. It was buttery and yummy. Tater tots were decent, but could have been crispier. Although the food is mediocre to me, I will give a shout out to the staff who took our order. She was friendly and helpful in explaining to us about the menu after we informed her it was our first visit. During our meal, she also asked how everything was. Guess what I had for my birthday lunch? A traditional lobsta roll! I usually go for the warm Connecticut roll, but I was feeling the need for a change up. We came to Rio for the Taste of Rio event and I definitely wanted a lobster roll. However, their booth did not have electricity at the moment and long story short, we went and dined in at their storefront location. I've been to Mason's Virginia Beach location and loved my experience. I was excited to read about this location opening. It took me awhile, but I'm here! It was very good. We decided to share, so we went for the "Bar Harbor" which has 50% more meat. We couldn't stop at one, we went for a second, this time we went for the classic with the Bar Harbor extra meat option. Visited Mason's for lunch. Ordered 2 Connecticut-style lobsta rolls, a tater tots, and a clam chowda. The lobsta rolls had nice big chunks of firm lobster meat. The tater tots were a bit on the soggy side and not my vibe. The clam chowda was good with nice chunks of clams, but more onion and watered down than I cared for. The cashier was super nice and saved me $1 since I was ordering a combo but wasn't paying attention that I was. I picked this place for us to try for lunch, as it was our first time. I like seafood but my wife does not so I had hoped for something for both of us. I love that Rio has some great new places and this is one of them. As soon as we entered we were greeted by Ms Sandra with a cool vibe about her. She's funny yet Direct when she needs to be. We had a few people in front of us before we ordered so we were able to hear a little bit of the options available. We were also told about the options once we got up to the front counter. Miss Sandra was working the front counter when it was busy, greeting guests, also clearing tables and bringing the food to the guests. She has a great demeanor and witty Banner which we appreciated :) i ordered the Connecticut roll and lobster bisque. My lobster roll was hot and fresh and the lobster bisque had a good amount of lobster in the bottom of the cup. My wife ordered a grilled cheese and tater tots as well as a whoopie pie and to wash it all down a blueberry soda. The inside was nice and clean not too crowded and everyone loved miss Sandra's service. They also had someone making the food behind the counter. This place recently opened in Rio! They have a variety of rolls including the classic roll, Connecticut lobster salad roll, lobster BLT roll, shrimp roll, and crab roll. All rolls are $21, besides the $16 shrimp roll. They also offer lobster mac & cheese ($16) and lobster grilled cheese ($17). We ordered the Connecticut roll; there was an option to upgrade to The Bar Harbor, which adds 50% more lobster and tail for $27. We weren't blown away by the Connecticut roll and thought it needed more flavor. The owners walked out as I was waiting and both greeted me as did the interior staff when they opened. November 19, 2025 To: Dan Beck - CEO of Mason's From: Bernadette Freeman (Customer) Subject: Terrible Customer Service (So disappointed) My son, granddaughter and I came to Mason's on Nov 15th, 2025 for the very first time yesterday to try the food. The WORST customer service ever. The lady with the short hair cut, was treating and talking down to people of color in the restaurant. It was not just us but the cashier as well, you could clearly see that the cashier was in training. The cashier is also a person of color, she was speaking and treating her as if she were stupid. She started hollering number 13, as she's hollering, she walking towards a couple who was sitting. I then started checking my receipts to see if there was a number because no one said listen for a number, again it is our first time in your restaurant, and we let them know that when we ordered. She proceeded to sit my soups (2) in front of this couple, I then walked over and said I am number 13, she turned and said I called number 13 and I then say, I didn't know there was a number system because no one told us that when we paid. My soups were exposed (no lids) to her and these customers. We spent $167 in this restaurant for lunch. I could have spent that shopping elsewhere to be treated like that with her attitude and rudeness. I ignored it. She was extremely rude and loud the worst customer service ever, so unprofessional and very embarrassing. Everyone in the restaurant turned and was looking and listening. No discretion at all. Very unprofessional. I will not dine there again and will spread the word of my experience to my colleagues, I work for Montgomery County with over 25,000 employees, and I will gladly send an email. I know this cannot be the first time someone has complained about that employee. We ordered different orders. My numbers were 13 and 14, one to dine in and one to go. We had my grandbaby with us, so my son went next door and brought her a kid's Chipotle because she will not eat seafood. When he returned our second order had come out and we had started to eat. Then she comes over again, Loud and Rude, with no discretion, the whole restaurant is looking at us again. She says she cannot eat other people's food in here. I said she is a child, she cannot eat outside by herself, and we spent a lot of money here. So now I am very embarrassed and feel like we are being thrown out of your establishment. So, we left without incident, because she was really rude and now I have had enough of her rudeness. Again, she was loud and very embarrassing, I have never felt so humiliated in my life. She kept going on, so I said Lady I am being as nice as possible, leave it alone, we are leaving. She needs to be re-trained in customer service. Today we placed a pick-up order from Mason's Famous Lobster Rolls in the Rio Center in Gaithersburg, MD. We had family visiting from New York and New England and we thought it would be a treat. When we returned home after picking up the order, we noticed a few things that weren't correct. First and foremost, the salad with lobster mean had absolutely no lobster meat on it. Secondly, the lobster bisque, which we added the $5.00 lobster chunks to because the photo on the website looked so enticing, turned out to include very little lobster - in fact they confirmed when we called that it only includes 1 ounce of lobster meat - for $5.00. It was a ridiculously small portion and looked nothing like the picture. Lastly, the classic lobster roll that we added pickle to came without the pickle. We called and they were apologetic but my wife had to turn around and drive back to the store to exchange the salad which they had mistakenly left the lobster off of. They prepared a whole new salad for her which was actually pretty loaded with lobster. They also provided a new soup - same amount of lobster meat and still looked anemic and certainly not worth the $5.00 upgrade. The bisque, however, was very tasty just a bit disappointing in the content of lobster meat. The basic soup, we were told, included NO lobster meat. The lobster rolls were full and well prepared with extremely tasty rolls and the preparation was good. Again, based upon our experience, I wouldn't opt for the upgrade on those either because it's not necessary for the extra meat. We also had the New England Clam chowder which was tasty, well made, and loaded with clams and other ingredients. And we tried the lobster mac and cheese which was also tasty, but overall a small portion and perhaps not worth the cost. Overall, with the exception of the mistake of leaving the lobster off of the salad and the pickle off of the sandwich, the food was good. My advice to anyone thinking of ordering from Mason's is to simply go with the standard orders and skip any add-ons as they are clearly not worth the additional cost and in some cases left off the order. I would also advise anyone doing a pick-up order to check each item carefully before leaving the store to make sure no mistakes have been made. And because of the mistakes (more than one on this order), I would NOT to a delivery order. Overall I have to give Mason's Famous Lobster Roll a passable score but in the experience of our guests who are quite familiar with lobster rolls and seafood, this was not top of the line. read more

I visited last night near closing and the counter worker was great, nice and prepared the order well as two other employees sat gossiping and looking on. As I was walking out, one of the old ladies yelled at me, " be careful walking on MY floors with THOSE heels"! I told her the shoes had a non slip grip and left. What a negative and totally unnecessary comment to give a customer who just paid $30 for a roll and soup. If this was a manager, you need to learn manners from your counter worker. The place is extremely pricey and the lobster was really overcooked and bland tasting. It had a chewy rubbery texture which made it impossible to digest. I have to find a better lobster place because this one is not worth the money and the quality of the food was terrible.
