I've been walking down the street and popping in here every couple of months. There are things that are just so freaking solid: namely the Stewed Pork Belly Bun and their Broccoli with sesame sauce. The bun is killer, not much more needs to be said. But the brocolli...come on. A lot of the time it's the small things that make or break a dish that flirts with perfection, and they got this down to an art; not only is the sauce succulent (yes I will use that word because it befits any dish that makes me smack my lips like a Philistine), but the timing of steaming the broc is what takes this simple appetizer and makes it into something transcendent. Just a little bit more or less sauce and it would still be about as good. But any less or (God forbid) more steam, and this order would be sent spinning from atop its summit into the land of meh. I'd give the place 5 stars but the service tends to be just a little sour, which is brought into more of a focus in that they barely need to interact at all, given the dystopian self-serve screen you must use. You lose one star for your lack of humanity there, Mason's. But keep it up with the broc and I'll absolutely continue to let it slide. read more

Pork Soup Dumplings - 8/10 These were classic pork soup dumplings served with an umami-rich sauce. When dining in, they also provide ginger on the side, which you can dip in soy sauce, vinegar, or both. Solid and satisfying. Beef Angus Bun - 7/10 This one is skippable in my opinion. The meat tasted like it had been braised in a soy-based sauce for a while, but the texture inside was a bit rough. There was also a lot of bun, and while the flavor was okay, it didn't stand out. Pan-Fried Blue Crab Dumplings - 9/10 My favorite dish of the meal! The exterior was nicely crispy, while the inside stayed soft and flavorful with a rich, umami crab taste. Pan-Fried Chicken and Cabbage Dumplings - 8/10 These were lighter and less rich than the blue crab dumplings, but still very good. They tasted fresher and "healthier," which is what I expected. There are so many spots nearby after yoga, but I was craving dumplings. I found this spot and stopped by for lunch. I ordered the chicken and cabbage dumplings and the pork bun. It took about 10 minutes as I took it to go and it was piping hot. It was the perfect amount of food without getting overly stuffed or feeling overwhelmed. I was able to still play with a small child and not feel sluggish. The service was super friendly and they brought put the food to me when it was ready. It's a "nicer" spot. This place shares a strip mall location with a place that reminds me of din tai fung: it's called Alfred Coffee. The logo is recognizable, it's trendy, it's busy at all times, but the coffee is okay. Why not a mom and pop? Why not just some other local place that simply doesn't have buzz around it? Give these places a chance. The dumplings weren't soupy. they give you a paper bowl. Id recommend putting the dumplings in the bowl, make your desired ratio of vinegar/soy sauce, and add chili oil. The vinegar here is FIRE. Not as acidic as din tai's. The chili oil is good. Mild, aromatic, ideal. Also got the angus beef bun, I'd like to try the pork next time as well as more of the dumplings. My wife's all time favorite has always been wood-ear mushrooms, so chose this automatically, while she selected the many dumplings and garlic/chive flatbread that really hits home with me. I remember trying Mason's years ago and having a pleasant experience. Recently, I had a craving for dumplings and decided to stop by for lunch during a weekday afternoon. There was not much of a line, and ordering went by quickly. I got the pan fried pork dumplings and thought they were average. They arrived with a slick of oil in the bottom of the container that seemed excessive even knowing that they were pan fried. The dumpling interior was boggy, so the filling could easily fall out once you took a bite. While my craving was satisfied, this place would not be my top choice for pan fried pork dumplings in the future. Soup dumpling is pretty nice. The skin is a bit too thick but still okay. But i think they botched my pan fried dumplings though. It's over charred, tough skin, and has bitter char taste. The filling is alright. When i asked if this how it supposed to be, they said yes it's crispy. The place is nice and fast, great ambience for a quick lunch. They're a short walk from the Highland Park metro station, although they do share a parking lot with some other stores. The inside is a nice and has a lot of cute dumpling themed posters. On a Thursday night, it was not busy at all. There's a self service water dispenser and disposable utensils at the table. I forgot to take pictures but the soup dumplings were very good. We got the original pork and the yuzu chicken. They had a good amount of filling and were juicy. I would recommend using the chili oil for some extra flavor. Decided to try this place for the first time since we saw it on Good Mythical Morning and Rhett and Link suggested it! They actually preferred it over Din Tai Fung which is our absolute favorite so we definitely had to try it. Parking lot was pretty empty, not a big lot or anything so be aware of that. The restaurant itself isn't huge either, definitely a mom and pop kinda vibe to it. We walked up to the register and the young lady told us to grab a menu and sit wherever we wanted and order up front when we were ready. We ordered the sweet and sour lotus roots (probably my favorite thing here! Perfect crunchy texture, refreshing, delicious pickly flavor). We also got the original pork soup dumplings and the yuzu chicken dumplings. The waiter delivered the food to our desk, basically right in front of you which was a little scary since everything was super hot and steamy. I was a little surprised and caught off guard since we had a big table and he put it as close as possible lol. The dumplings are HUGE. They have tiny plastic soup spoons so it was really difficult to eat and dip into the sauce. Kind of wish it was more of a one bite kinda dumpling because biting a soup dumpling is really hard without it going everywhere and it's piping hot. Otherwise, they were pretty good. Good tasting food but a little too much chili oil crisp sauce topped on everything (seaweed, meats etc). I would have liked the pan fried dumplings to be brown and crisp on the bottom rather than black and burnt on the edges. That's not how you make and serve dumplings!!!!! The seaweed was a nice cold side dish and the cilantro definitely complemented the seaweed well. Only thing was the cilantro bunch was not chopped so you just have to eat these huge pieces with the stems on. Not crazy about all of the food served in to go boxes. We finally got to try Mason's after wanting to sample their menu for a few years now. My former office location was near Luscious Dumplings. We would regularly order from there as it was one of the staff favorites for lunch, so I knew I would like Mason's as soon as I read the 2 were sister restaurants. We found parking easily in their shared lot on a Saturday evening. Everything we ordered was for take-out but they have a handful of tables and some high-back chairs along the wall. We ordered pan fried pork dumplings ($13.95 for 10 pieces), steamed blue crab & pork soup dumplings (8 pcs for $14.95), pan fried chicken & cabbage dumplings (10 pcs for $13.95), Chinese pork sausage rice ($13.50), baby bok choy ($6.50) and seaweed salad ($6.50). I found all the items we ordered to be really good. The pan fried pork dumplings will always be tasty & is a standard order for us. 10 pieces is just right. Dipping it in vinegar & shoyu makes for perfect bites. I found the blue crab & pork soup dumplings to be exceptional. This was a great combination of flavors. It might be my new favorite soup dumpling, it was that delicious. Add a sliver of ginger and dip sparingly in a 2:1 ratio of shoyu to vinegar is what dumpling dreams are made of. So so good. The pan fried chicken & cabbage dumplings were good but being all breast meat, it wasnt my favorite of the 3 dumplings we ordered. Still good, nonetheless. The Chinese pork sausage rice was great. Lap cheong, pickled vegetables & steamed vegetables over rice was delicious and went well with the dumplings. I would order this again, undoubtedly. The baby bok choy was steamed and went great with the provided mushroom based oyster sauce. The seaweed salad comes dressed in chili oil, garlic sauce & cilantro. This had a nice kick to it. Both sides made for great changes in flavor in-between dumpling bites. Service was great. The young woman taking our order that night (June 29, 2024) was friendly & helpful. Our food was ready in about 15 mins. When it was done, they brought it to where we were sitting. I liked that. It's the little things... We ordered when we got there but we noticed a lot of folks call in their orders. Our orders were packed with extra sauces (shoyu & vinegar), chopsticks, chili oil & napkins. Despite the high reviews we felt that the food fell short on taste and texture. They did not taste fresh and they lacked flavor. I typically do not factor customer service in my reviews but the employees on shift were not friendly, or attentive. We had some bok choy to start off our meal. Our main course had to be the pork soup dumplings. The dumplings were good, but quite brittle. Once you pick these things up, they bursted immediately. A new hidden gem discovered! A pretty small spot but so yummy and so affordable. I got two appetizers and an entree for under 30 dollars and they were big enough for my friend and I to share. We had the seaweed salad, scallion pancakes, and the steamed chicken and cabbage dumplings.
