When you live in a city with incredible Mexican food on practically every corner, it's especially disappointing when a restaurant misses the mark. From the start, nothing impressed us. The tacos came on single corn tortillas that immediately fell apart and seemed to need the little taco holder just to stay together. The black beans were completely flavorless, and the chile relleno was watery and bland. Overall, the food lacked seasoning, texture, and any memorable flavor. The service didn't help matters. I had to ask twice just to get a glass of water, which added to the feeling that we weren't being taken care of. With so many fantastic Mexican restaurants in San Francisco, this one simply didn't measure up. We left wishing we had chosen somewhere else. The good thing was they had the soccer game on and the basketball playoffs. They appear to have a nicely priced happy hour that starts at lunch. read more

wow. Don't come here for the tacos. I think the plates looked yummy. but tacos were underwhelming. The fish taco was fine. The carnitas and al pastor were just not my cup of tea. so wet and I don't like bacon in my al pastor. I liked the salsas and the pozole was fine. They did have a big screen and a smaller TV for world cup. our server was very sweet and attentive. the place did fill up during lunch on a weekday. Visiting San Francisco for work and was super pleased to find this adorable taco spot a few blocks away. I have Celiac and had no reaction to the Elote appetizer or any of the tacos I ate (yes I ate all three), which were all delicious. The server confirmed the chips are not safe to eat due to a shared fryer which was very helpful. I highly recommend checking out Matador. read more

This is my favorite spot for happy hour. The happy hour is from 12pm-5:20pm. I always get the chicken flautas and nachos and get either a glass or pitcher of their tequila margarita or mezcal margarita. The flautas are loaded with meat on the inside and the toppings are really good. The nachos are also good and I've tried the prickly pear margarita and strawberry margarita. This most recent time I got a mezcal cucumber jalapeño (bomb!) pitcher and it was enough for about 4 1/2 glasses. We also requested tajin rim. We also tried the side of rice and beans and could choose from Spanish rice or cilantro lime rice, which we tried the cilantro lime and it was really flavorful! Your choice of refried or black beans. We usually go between 1-3pm ish and it isn't super busy but I've seen this place get very busy in the evening. It's close to Union square and there's an underground bar on the side. Service is always quick and the server is always friendly. read more

They had the cutest set up for the Super Bowl! Joined them for a last minute watch party and got to experience groups of people without the crowd, it still felt intimate like a house watch party. The main entrance had a large screen and the other room had another TV. I didn't try the super bowl menu--only their regular one which was a cute addition anyways. We ordered the pozole rojo, camarón de agua chiles, and chips and salsa + 2 tequila wells shots. Everything was decently priced and we only spent about $50 including tip, split between 2 people is such a good deal! We were hella full and our faves were the salsa and the ceviche! We came here as a small group and overall thought our food was fine overall. My colleague ordered a quesabirria taco but had to ask for a regular taco because she said there was just too much cheese in her initial taco. My Mexican pizza was just okay but it had a lot of random sauces and toppings on it that it wasn't super appetizing. My other colleague liked her chile relleno, but it was a bit odd that it had chicken in it as well. We ordered chips and salsa but the chips were pretty stale and difficult to finish. The mocktails and happy hour menu were pretty nice though. Overall, the food was just okay and it was pretty reasonable as well. But what you order could be hit or miss. Service was friendly, food and drinks were tasty, prices a bit higher than your local taqueria that would give you sides but you're there for the vibes and clean look and feel of the place. My friend and I split the margarita tree which comes with 4 different flavors of margaritas. We each had our personal favorites from the four. For tacos, I got the fried shrimp taco (borracho uno) and fried fish taco (borracho dos). They were both good but I liked the fish one a little more. My friend and I also split the quesabirria tacos which were quite tender and flavorful when dipped in the jus. I had a bite of my friend's taco and I honestly don't remember much about it other than it was meat. This restaurant far surpassed our expectations and I am only disappointed that we do not have time to come here and eat again. I walked by and noticed this place and decided to come in for some tacos! The tacos are not bad, a little pricey, but overall not bad! I ordered some Nopal tacos (Cactus Tacos, chicken, and steak tacos...they were ok. I like my tacos a little bit on the hot side, these were not. The salsa was pretty mild, and the tortillas were handmade, but it reminded me of maseca masa...I hope they didn't use maseca! Anyway, you be the judge! The ambiance is modern decor (with two neutral gender restrooms) and does feel cold with a concrete floor. Still, it's worth a visit if in the area. This is also a good HH spot (between noon and 5:30pm even!), unexpected for this area in the City. Can pregame or post game since there are many bars within a few blocks. The Spanish-style decor was impressive, with music playing and a big TV that made the space feel lively. I had the fajitas plate with a Mexican Coke, and it was delicious. Came for the margaritas, I love a good mescal drink and think that there's definitely hits the spot with the smoky essence blended nicely with fruit flavors. They were strong enough to my liking and I was definitely happy with my order. The Molcajete was the first time I got to try that dish and it was wonderful! The salsa at the bottom really marinated well with the chicken and steak pieces. I would have loved an extra jalapeño popper as this is dish is advertised for two people. The flautas were standard and enjoyable. It was a wonderful experience to come back to a place a used to frequent when I lived in this neighborhood. The ambiance is always lively with a great music selection. I will say that when it gets pretty busy service can sometimes lack I had to go up and let them know I was ready to check out as I sat outside so if you're in a rush not the best place to come to. read more

Matador is a great Mexican restaurant and cocktail bar. This is also a great place to go before seeing a show at the Masonic (it's only a couple blocks away). There is also a parking garage right next door to Matador. The place itself is nicely decorated. It's on the smaller side (so I would recommend making a reservation). I had the spicy margarita (with tequila, rather than mezcal) and it was delicious. I also appreciate the bartender for allowing me to switch out the alcohol. The chips, salsa and guacamole are delicious (I do wish that salsa and chips came with the table, rather than having to order them). The tacos were delicious! We were craving some Mexican food and this place did not disappoint. In fact, we ended up coming back a second day bc it was so good. The pozole roja is sooo delicious! (It was a tad salty but I just asked for a cup of hot water and added some in). I had it two days in a row. It's hearty, the hominy is so soft, the meat was tender as ever, and the flavors were magnificent together. Now the tacos. Oh. My. God. The carnitas tacos were SO JUICY! Must try these! We also had chicken and ground beef tacos. Very juicy and flavorful. The tortillas are so fresh and easy to bite and chew. We got nachos that were filled to the brim! It was the happy hour one too. Nice place inside, friendly staff, very reasonable menu and prices. I got the carnitas tacos (carnitas tacos are my litmus test of a Mexican place) and they were fantastic. I was was able to get to about half and I started getting sick and stayed violently vomiting and diarrhea for a day and a half. I will never in my life eat there again. Whatever you are doing with storage, prep, cleaning and sanitizing. Stop! Completely change your thought process and bring someone in who know what they are doing..
