ONE STAR FOR STUPIDITY Matchbox used to be our go-to place to eat whenever we would walk around the Mosaic District with our dog. Because of the way the outdoor seating is located in the shadow of the building, it is often a little chilly even on beautiful days, so it is always less crowded than the patios of other restaurants. One gorgeous day in October, we asked to sit down at one of the tables to eat. It was sunny and warm outside, and the entire Mosaic District (including the sidewalk between Matchbox's patio and the restaurant itself) was bustling, but there was NOT A SINGLE PERSON at any of their outdoor tables. We were told that we could eat at one of the tables, but our dog would have to be tied up on the OUTSIDE of the railing. I was told this this is a new policy implemented by the restaurant. We immediately went to another restaurant, whose patio was crowded, and were welcomed with our pet. She laid by our feet, and was complemented by customers at the next table for being so quiet and well-behaved (and beautiful). Matchbox's new policy is extremely stupid, and is a great way to promote dog bites or dog fights!! To separate an animal from its owner can cause anxiety in even the most well-trained dogs. To leave it uncontrolled in a busy area with unfamiliar people, children, and dogs that can approach it is a bad idea. Add to this the fact that the animal, if confronted or uncomfortable, cannot move away because it is tied to the railing, and you have a recipe for disaster. I know that the restaurant is private property, and the management can decide who can/cannot use their outdoor seating area. I wholeheartedly believe that if someone brings a disruptive pet onto the patio, they can (and should!) be asked to leave. I only bring my dog with me to restaurants because she is well-behaved in that environment, but I have no control over how passersby train or handle their pets. I cannot support the idea that a dog should be removed from the owner's immediate control and surrounded by unknown people, unsupervised children, or potentially 'leash aggressive' dogs walking by. Matchbox, please, for the safety of your customers' pets AND the public, get rid of this terribly ill-conceived policy! read more

I've eaten at other matchbox restaurants and have always had good experiences. We went to the mosaic location for my daughter's 16th birthday for their unlimited brunch. There were many menu options that we were excited to try and the unlimited option was appealing. The food orders took incredibly long to come out, were cold (from our table, we could see plates sitting in the window for 10+ minutes waiting to be served), and there were some items that were never actually served. The manager apologized for the slow service, explained that they were short staffed, and cut the bill by more than half. Bottom line, this location seemed to be poorly managed, with extremely inefficient processes. read more

We were already drunk when we arrived and she was such a rockstar. Not only did she deliver excellent service she played along with our cheesy parodies with her name (think "jasline don't like it ROCK THE CASBAH" and "jasline, jasline, jasline, JASLINE! I really like going to Matchbox. They have a great selection of food and drinks. I absolutely love their pizza. It always comes out extremely fresh and cheesy. Their service is consistent, not the best and not the worst. The only thing I wouldn't order again from there is their Calamari. I personally feel its overpriced for what you get. A great option for drinks and dinner. Their food, drinks, and service have been fairly consistent over the years. I had their Irish iced cold brew cocktail drink, which was delicious! I need to compliment the hosts Rachel and Haley at Matchbox. They have been amazing with guests and any complaints. I witnessed them taking ownership and fixing any problems by themselves and not using " let me talk to a manager". There is a culture of taking care if the guests that is driven by the GM and it shows at all levels of service. We are regulars and for hockey games and the team there not only make sure we are attended to but make our visit special. During these trying times even shorthanded, patio openings, weather challenges this team has been nothing short of professional, fun and endearing. We appreciate them and their service. As well, i got annoyed of the outdoor seating. Its not the restaurant fault but mainly the people waiting to get seated. Some folks decided to rest their bodies against the gates. Which is quite uncomfortable, when your turning your head and you see peoples backs and faces staring at you waiting for you to leave. Overall, the food was good. My roommate and I came on a Saturday night around 5pm. The hostess told us it'd be about a 45-minute wait but she saw open spots at the pizza bar which was first come first serve. So we snagged two spots at the pizza bar (full menu and service) and was served right away! Really appreciated the hostess looking out for us. We ordered the [crab + avo] appetizer, which was a little pricey ($16) but they give you a lot of crab and avocado so well worth. We each ordered our own personal pizza. My roommate got the [chicken + artichoke] and I got the [banana pepper + pepperoni]. Would definitely recommend the chicken + artichoke! I thought the banana peppers took up most of my taste buds while eating, but it was still good. The personal pizza comes with about 6 slices (we each only finished two and the took the rest home). Love this place! Had a nice date night with the wife. Beautiful weather outside so we opted to sit outside on their patio. Two servers working the area and did well coordinating between each other as when we sat down a couple other tables sat themselves. Our serve Zach greeted us and introduced himself with great energy! He was good to ask all the typical appropriate questions and asked if we needed any drinks. My wife had their Peach Lemon Drop and I went with their Frozen Prickled Pear Margarita. Both were tasty and that Lemon Drop had quite a heavy pour which while great, needed a little sprite to make it drinkable. We both have been here before and knew what we wanted, we both got their sliders and opted to get fries and onion strings. Their onion strings are INCREDIBLE. Sliders came out slightly pink as requested and were delicious! We also had their arancini as an app which was so cheesy and delicious! This place def hit the spot! Went in hungry, left out happy. I ordered the cream of crab soup, shrimp & grits, and old bay wings. The cream of crab soup was so flavorful and full of crabmeat. The shrimp and grits were pretty good, the portion size was extremely small though. I know it's a starter but I believe they only give you a spoonful of grits. The old bay wings had potential. They had a very good flavor, just weren't done enough for me. I couldn't even pull the chicken off the bone because it was too rubbery...had to send them back. The service was ok. Matchbox is consistently one of my favorite restaurants in Mosaic. It's always good, they have an amazing happy hour, and the service is always top notch. Matchbox has great brunch, lunch, and dinner options. Even their salads are absolutely delicious, especially the Cobb. If you sit in the bar area you are privy to an excellent happy hour where they have $9 pizzas, happy hour drink specials, and half priced apps. The happy hour runs Monday-Friday and there is literally no better time to go. I highly recommend the Sauvignon Blanc on draft, the spinach and artichoke dip, and the matchbox meat pizza. matchbox is a local contemporary American restaurant chain that offers various appetizers, wood-fired pizzas, salads, grinders/sandwiches, desserts, and Happy Hour specials. I made advance reservations for a large group, and it was great that they were able to accommodate us to sit near the bar during HH! We ordered various appetizers to share: mini burgers (made with certified Angus beef, cooked to the temperature of your choosing, topped with pickles in a toasted brioche mini bun, and all the burgers covered with a massive amount of onion straws - I just wished these came an option with all the fixings, such as cheese, onions, etc.); crispy calamari (served with a side of jalapeno pepper jelly); spicy tuna tartare tacos (with gaucamole and sriracha mayo in a crispy wonton shell; these were actually pretty tasty, and I liked the thick crispy wonton shells); crab + avo (lump crab, gaucamole, and wood-fired bread - could have been more hot, but this was pretty cheesy and decadent); cheese fries (topped with sliced scallion - one of my favorites, as it had a nice amount of cheese sauce over the fries!); hot buffalo wings (served with both bleu and ranch sauce; the wings were pretty tasty, as they were saucy and fried well); and, hot artichoke + spinach dip (with mozzarella, grana padano, roasted garlic, and a side of sliced grilled baguette - this was slightly forgettable, as the dip was a little too thin for my taste). I had a 'patio pounder' lemonade (made with house-infused watermelon vodka, lemonade, and a nice chunk of fresh watermelon; I requested for an additional dash of the lemonade, and this was a nice little fresh cocktail; the watermelon was super juicy!). We live right off of Gallows Road and literally come by Mosaic District a couple of times of week. Despite the massive people traffic in this area, we love coming here to shop & eat. Matchbox is the place I'll come only when I'm craving something greasy and "American" as their food is pretty average and solid. I haven't encountered any specific problems; however, their foods never really blew my mind away because it was so good. If you are craving decent burgers, fries, and salad then check this place out! Side Note: -I always take advantage of their happy hour specials as it's the best one in this area. The happy hour runs from 3-7pm Monday-Friday. Otherwise, I don't think that it's good enough to warrant a wait over 30 minutes (which you can easily kill by perusing Target or one of the many other little shops in the area). They offer a good variety of options that will suite everyone in your group and their portions sizes are pretty generous as well. Their mini sliders are a great starter and you get to choose how you like them cooked (I usually lean towards medium rare but depending on the table, they're good at medium as well) as well as the cheese which is a little extra but I think is worth it. They're pizzas are also pretty good and you can get them half and half if you want to try various combinations. OK WOW! My friends have been talking about this place for awhile and I finally got around to going. The ambience is very nice. A little dim, but has a cozy feeling. The service was great! My waiter answered all my questions throughly and helped me to get my perfect pizza. They have pizzas to choose from on the menu, but can customize any of them to your liking which I really appreciate I ended up going with the Mushroom White from the wood fired pizza section and asked that they mixed some tomato red sauce in Bc I didn't want just the white garlic sauce. It was exactly what I wanted and tasted so good. The crust was the right amount of crispiness, cheese was flavorful, and sauce was creamy with a touch of tang from the tomato sauce. Perfection!! The small size was also a good amount for one person. I ended up taking 2 slices home with me. Also, I went at around 4pm on a Thursday and it wasn't too busy so my order came out really quick! My bf got the Asian chicken salad and omg the large portion size is huge! It's not anything that will blow your mind (it's a salad guys lol) but I actually really liked the peanut dressing sauce it came with. It's very similar to the Vietnamese summer roll peanut sauce.
