What can I say - I'm a fan of this place. You would expect this to be a normal gourmet pizza place but i'm not sure if its because its in the Mosaic District (Merrifield) - but it feels like its more. It feels like a neighborhood place to come get a low stress meal. Ok onto the food - I had dinner with the family he earlier today. Their pizzas are delicious - they are thin - so plan accordingly. Amazingly - unlike other pizza places - you don't feel grossly full after eating Matchbox's pizza. We also had a few appetizers - I tried some sort of meatballs and they were good. Not earth shattering but good. My brother and mother split a Tuna Taco and it just wasn't good. Usually that is a staple at this location but I guess today was not our day. The fish just did not feel fresh...the taste and temperature were just off. My brother which eats here more often told us to not sweat it - 9 out of 10 times that is a slam dunk appetizer choice. The two disappointments were the desert menu and the acoustics. The desert menu had about 6-8 things on it - but it was missing something like a creme brule, carrot cake, etc. And now to the acoustics - this is a neighborhood place - so i get it will be loud, but it was definitely hard to hear across the table here. I've been to this location a few times and the staff are always so nice. DJ was our server today and she was great. We had a large party and drinks were constantly being replenished, which is great for someone like me who drinks too much water while eating. We started off with the artichoke and spinach dip - great dip and the bread was delicious. Since Matchbox is known for their pizza, I caved and got a half pepperoni and banana peppers/half crispy pork belly. The crispy pork belly is new so I wanted to try - very good sweet chili sauce. This is my second lunch at Matchbox in as many weeks. I enjoyed the Crab cake Sandwich so much that I ordered it again. The Sangria was tasty and the Jalapeño Cucumber Margarita was spicy and delicious. The Crab Cake Sandwich didn't disappoint and the Prosciutto and Fig pizza was a tasty surprise. Cut 2 review update, i still love the place, the food is excellent but until yesterday i had always sat in patio! At this moment frankly we just wanted to order a pizza i was a little put off. We ordered a corn bread and smoke + fire large pizza. It came and the corn bread like always was awesome but the pizza!!!!!! It was burnt, cheese was all stretchy n black and the dough had no color and the flavor was lets just say horrible..it was clear they baked it on rather high temp so its done quickly burning the top not cooking the bottom properly. I had just one slice n remained quite (i am a loyal customer so i had no intension to speak ill about it to my friend) when finally he broke his silence n said you know what I am not coming to this place again, they took ages to get our food n its burnt n chewy, no one came to refill our glasses or recommended drinks or even asked us how's the food. I was too embarrassed as he was right, I called my new attendant n very nicely said i do not want any changes or bill adjustments but as a regular customer i wanted to let you know about today's meal. He must have gone to his manager and got another pizza which my friend ate half off but I couldn't even touch it coz frankly by that time all the wait n experience killed my appetite. ThIs review is more for the manager I think (someone in a red shirt) and the chefs. Our waiter was good and we gave them a good tip and the only reason this is a 2 star review and not a 1 star review. The person who was in a red shirt was so loud through out the night our conversation was interrupted every time she came around and started yelling. It was always about something random like "don't mess with my money" on several occasions but we couldn't help but stop and listen due to not being able to hear the people at my own table. I say the chefs but really whoever cooked the Alfredo this night gave us a bowl of water with noodles in them. It's amazing no one stopped that from being served. Last our soup was served cold. I'm sure the chicken tortilla and pork belly soup would have been great if they were even room temperature. read more

Excited to try this new place out, I came here on a Monday night with my girlfriend. I tried making reservations on OpenTable and it said that there were none available for 2 people at 8PM which was weird because I called the restaurant afterward and they had plenty of space. The inside is very spacious and nicely decorated. There are different matchboxes displayed on each table (ours was Hello Kitty lol) as the name would imply. I really liked the bar set-up and the atmosphere. However, they turned down the lights a little after we were seated and it was too dark for me. We ordered the Matchbox Meat Pizza, Prosciutto and Fig Pizza, and the Mini-Burgers. Mini-Burgers (3 for $9): The delicious mini-burgers were the perfect sized appetizer. You can choose how you want them cooked (we got medium rare and that was just right for me) and have the option of adding cheese for $1 extra. They also came with really thin onion fries! I would highly suggest getting this appetizer, especially if you're in a big group! Matchbox Meat Pizza ($14small/$21large): We got a small Matchbox Meat and this was just OK in my opinion. It's like their meat-lover's version. It was not bad, but nothing special. Matchbox pizzas are very thin and I believe there is none to very little sauce. As a result, I thought that this one looked a little greasy. Prosciutto & Fig ($14small/$21large): The Prosciutto and Fig was a great balance of salty and sweet. It reminds me of the popular 'bacon-wrapped dates' appetizer. It was a very unique pizza, but I feel like people would either love it or hate it. Fortunately, I loved it! Service was very attentive. The host/hostesses were very friendly. The only thing that I didn't like was that I felt our server tried to upsell too much. I told him I wanted water but he was adamant about me trying a craft beer or cocktail. Then he seemed disappointed that we were too full for dessert. I made the mistake of ordering something semi-healthy here -- the wood-fired lamb sandwich w/ chickpea fries. The only thing wood-fired was the pita/flatbread, the lamb was tender, but completely bland. It only tasted good if you dipped it in the accompanying tzatziki, but the chickpea fries were delish. I would totally ask for a basket of it instead of your usual fries. The S.O. nailed it by ordering the Matchbox Meat pizza. I like how the pizza comes out fresh, thin, and doughy highlighting the generous toppings and ingredients. Must-Order: The Cinnamon Rolls. They make them in house and serve them straight from the cast-iron skillet. They're super light and airy and not overly sweet. Considering the quality, it's bang for your buck at $6. Service: Friendly and knowledgeable. Their credit card machines were down so they had to manually write a receipt for us which delayed service a bit, but otherwise speedy with the food considering we came during lunch on a Saturday. Decor: This location is HUGE compared to the cramped one in Chinatown (obviously 'cause it's in the 'burbs). The bar is massive as well. Even though this place does not have Happy Hour specials, It's a cool spot to hang out after work. On my first visit, I ordered the Bison Burger. It was too big to handle (yep, I said it) but the mess it produced was worth it. My burger was seasoned very well. It made cheating on my "diet" worth all the calories. The sandwhich was served with a side of the biggest onion rings I have ever seen. Aside from the visual presentation, I didn't enjoy the onion rings. If I were to order again, I would go with the steak fries. This location is actually much bigger than it looks. This place has been open in Merrifield, VA for a while now but I never actually have the time to try this place. I have heard many mix comments about this place so I wasn't sure if i should try it. My boyfriend and I decided to give it a shot anyways since we never been here. The parking wasn't hard to find for us since we went on a sunday night around 7:30pm. This place is right next to the theater and near the coffee shop. It is hard to miss it. We were greeted by the host and hostess and they told us we have to wait for around 20 minutes to 30 minutes. The waiting room is small so we were standing around since it was packed. While we were waiting, we looked at the menu to see what we should order for dinner later. Oh boy, the menu was long shape and the front was hardwood kind, it was kind of heavy to hold also. The menu didn't have that many choices either and it is kind of pricey, so if you are looking for meals around $12-$18, this place is definitely not for you. We didn't have to wait for 30 minutes at all, we were called to our tables after 15 minutes of waiting so I was definitely very happy about that. The set up inside the restaurant is definitely different than other restaurants around the area. It is definitely very spacious and designs are different and cool. Our table was all the way in the back which was quiet for us to enjoy our dinner. Our server did took a long time to assist us and even forgot to ask if want anything for drinks. I ordered "match box pizza" ( small only, since big one was too big for me, we did looked over our table next to us for the large size pizza). My boyfriend decided to try the "lamb sandwich". I was amazed by the gourmet pizza, it was delicious that we both agreed we will come back to try another kind of pizza. His lamb sandwich was okay, the portion was definitely small for the price and it came with chick peas and it tasted weird to us so we didn't even finish it. Once again, our server didn't even refill our water for us. I had to chase him down for that and I had to literally ask for everything (water, napkins, utensils and even the check). Overall, I definitely enjoyed the food, the atmosphere and the design of the restaurant, but I was disappointed at our server. You really can't go wrong with any Matchbox pizza... with the thin and crispy crusts they pack a lot of flavor without a bellyful of carbs. The very best meal I've had so far here was the Black Bean Banh Mi: It is SO delicious and juicy, probably because it's actually freshly handmade there as opposed to received frozen and par grilled. Their salads are innovative and also delish.This location is ideal for before or after movie dining. Sidewalk seating in season adds to the fun of being in the Mosaic District. We came by on a Friday night and the wait was about an hour. They have a really nice bar with a diverse selection of beers and wine on tap. If you have never been to a matchbox before, the pizza is thin crust. They have a wide variety of standard pizzas or you can make your own. There are two sizes available 10' personal or 14' large. The large is perfect for two people and comes with 8 slices. Here's a tip....if you want to try different kinds of pizza, ask for half on one side and half on the other side.....they encourage it. We were able to try half fig and prosciutto and half meat lovers. Both were fantastic. Normally, I never order fig and prosciutto but based on all the reviews on yelp, I was curious. I was pleasantly surprised and loved the sweet and salty taste. Another tip: Call 30 minutes before you plan to arrive and put your name on the list. Decided to check out this new spot with friends a couple weeks after its dinner opening. Because there was a long wait time for a Thursday evening (at least one hour) for inside seating, we decide to get seated right away in the outside patio area. Our server was pretty helpful in guiding us towards popular menu choices (of course the mini burgers) and took good care of our party. We ordered up some drafts, and it's nice that they have the proper glassware for each beer. We went with the 9 mini burgers, the soup of the day, and the panzanella salad. The soup looked thick and luscious, the salad was well balanced with flavors (I think their homemade croutons were cornbread), and the mini burgers were spot on. The onion shoestrings on top are probably the best part really. They are pretty addictive. The burgers themselves were pretty good as well, though they may have dried up a bit fast in the cool evening weather. Good service, pizza, beer, and weather on the patio = happy camper. I was psyched to see that Matchbox opened a location in the new Mosaic District; I'd been wanting to try it for a long time, but hadn't had an excuse to be near one of their other locations. I finally had a chance to stop by, and had a very pleasant meal on the patio on a beautiful afternoon. The beer list was impressive, and included some local-ish micro brews (Devil's Backbone and Starr Hill, both by Charlottesville), as well as my ultimate choice for a warm evening; Allagash White from Portland, Maine. The beer came out fairly promptly, and the food didn't take long either, but the waiter didn't lurk or otherwise distract me from enjoying myself. The small pizza was a good meal; enough to fill a hungry eater but not so much that I felt overly full. In fact, I even managed to eat a couple of donuts from the coffee and donuts dessert (which, incidentally, was big enough to feed four). After finally trying Matchbox, I'm even happier that they opened here, and I'm looking forward to my next visit to try some other beer, food, and dessert options. read more

Our food came out in a timely manner, our waters/drinks were refilled constantly, and he checked up on us to ensure our experience was enjoyable. I asked for my salad dressing for the ahi tuna salad on the side and they did that without any problems (I don't know how restaurants miss that). My food was flavorful and filling. The ahi tuna was bright and light, and the ginger dressing was a great complement. It had soba noodles, crisp lettuce and wonton pieces, and other accoutrements that made my dish have so many differently delightful textures. The mini bunless burger with gorgonzola was juicy and oh so tasty. The mini crabcake was PACKED with crab and and not filler. My family devoured their meals happily. The smaller size is definitely more than enough for one person, and I ended up sharing most of it with my boyfriend. I definitely recommend trying two specialties by splitting the pizza half/half as well. Overall, I think I preferred the Chicken Pesto to the Q Special -- I really just love that Basil-y, Garlicky goodness. The Asian Shortribs were fork-tender, boneless ribs served on a bed of pickled veggies and rice. I think the overall intention was good, but because of all of the different flavors mixing together, it became a bit overwhelming for my palette. The food at Matchbox is still really good and I will probably still continue to come here... seriously, their pizza is some of my favorite on the planet and don't even get me started about their burgers... but they could really use some help re-setting between guests. The last couple of times I have come I have gotten dirty glasses, not enough silverware, and then the last visit we were seated at a booth that had crumbs, ice cubes and I'm not sure what kind of slimy thing I touched (that made me want to vomit) still in the cushions. Seriously, it was actually so bad that I asked the greeter for a rag to clean the seat myself. There was also a bottle under my gf's feet that she kicked while trying to get situated and almost fell out of the booth (yeah I didn't know that was possible either). Our server just laughed and said there had been kids in the booth before us. I'm sorry, but to me, that's not acceptable. You need to reset completely between guests. Nice, clean, modern decor. Nice ambiance. My salmon salad barely had any salmon meat and was mostly greens. The salad greens were fresh, but I wish it had a little more salmon meat. The cheese pizza was good, but not amazing. The orange juice was delicious and freshly squeezed for our brunch. Couldn't wait to get home and write this review. WoW! I'm very impressed by this place. I first noticed Matchbox a couple weeks ago in Woodbridge. My friend and I decided to venture out to Merrifield for dinner this evening when we came across Matchbox at the Mosaic. Everything was wonderful from the time we stepped foot into the establishment until the last minute that we left. The greeters were very welcoming and gentle with us as we walked in impressed by the vibe of the venue. They kindly held the door open for us and walked us to our table. The interior had a smoky scent and feel, definitely matches the name :) we were instantly welcomed by our waiter Justin. He was so patient and soft spoken. Justin truly made the experience that much better. We decided to go with the Crab soup which was recommended and I got their pear and apple salad while my friend decided to go with the burger. I didn't try the burger so I can't comment on it but the soup and salad were phenomenal. So light, filled with flavor and truly refreshing. I walked out of the restaurant feeling satisfied, not over stuffed and in pain. Justin explained how the restaurant originated around the idea of pizza but they're slowly moving away from that concept. I had their "Matchbox Skillet" which was a small skillet piled high with a mixture of scrambled eggs, sausage, cheese, sausage, peppers, potatoes, onions, and sausage. Went to Matchbox on a Thursday and will definitely be going back for more! I called ahead and there was no wait at the time. The parking garage is a short walk across a street so make sure you bring your umbrella if it's raining. When my party of three got there, there was a wait of 15-20 and was given a pager. We were able to walk around the other shops and our pager went off in less than 10 mins. I was a little confused how there is a pager stand just inside the front doors and then a separate hostess stand inside the main restaurant. The inside is loud and I was worried that my experience would be ruined but luckily our dining neighbors weren't too loud. The service was great, our waiter was nice and friendly. I did notice that we were the only table with a kid but there might have been more kids in the back dining area. I liked the set up of the restaurant. The table we sat at was next to the bar and was half booth, half highboy which i thought was pretty cool with different matchboxes as decoration in the table. The bar was packed - not sure if it is the usual happy hour crowd or if there was a party but I'm definitely excited to try out the bar though it's not too large so finding a seat at the bar might be difficult. I have mixed feelings about TVs in the dining area. There are a few behind the bar which is great for at the bar; however, it is also technically part of the dining area that I sat in. While it can be a distraction from conversation, it is up to the diner to decide whether or not they will be distracted by it. The food was amazing and came out faster than I thought it would. I had the honey-miso salmon with honey-mustard miso, tempura shitake, rice noodles mixed with spinach and traded the carrots out for mashed potatoes. The salmon was simply perfect to me! It was cooked great (I hate runny salmon) and had a great honey glaze on the top that gave a sweet crunch to it. The mashed potatoes and rice noodles mixed with spinach were great too! It was my first time having tempura shitake so I'm not sure if it was done right but it was good. My munchkin had the cast iron ribeye and substituted the asparagus for french fries. The ribeye was cooked perfectly and the flavor was great! As far as price, I don't remember too well as I didn't pay. (Thank you, babe!) But the menu gives a good range of inexpensive and semi-expensive selections. Will definitely be visiting matchbox often and can't wait to try out the outdoor seating! read more

Matchbox is a great place for lunch. They have great specials. It gets crowded pretty fast for lunch. The mussels here are delicious - great sauce. I always order the 369 burgers with mozzarella cheese. It comes with onion straws and they make them extra crispy here. We try the pizza specials as often as possible, and those are made very uniquely. The service here is great - our waiter has been very attentive and would refill our drinks very quickly. read more

Never have I ever seen as many attractive waiters than when I finally came to dine here. But that's besides the point. The food of course was quite scrumptious. Every morsel was devoured from the mussel appetizer we ordered. We wished every morsel of our entrees were devoured, but sadly our stomachs could bear no more. The bloody mary burger had a nice spicy kick to it and well.. if you put a fried egg on anything it makes it amaze-balls already. For goodness sakes you could put a fried egg on another fried egg and it'd be God sent to me. But maybe that's because I have an unnatural obsession with eggs. Don't mind me. The infamous onion straws I have forever wanted to try lived somewhat up to their expectations. A portion of them were a bit soggy but that is understandable especially if it was mingling in meat and lettuce juice/grease. Service was fantastic. Would come here again. read more

I was pleasantly surprised with my experience at Matchbox. I had heard good things about the restaurant and was happy to get the chance to try it. First of all, I LOVE the interior design of this restaurant. It can accommodate an intimate dining or a large rowdy group. Although it is a rather large restaurant, the wood finish of everything and the set up of the wine bar and open kitchen in the back makes the atmosphere feel cozy and fun at the same time. We had a lovely server (thank you Liz!) who gave us good suggestions on the menu when we could not decide on the pizza we wanted and promptly came back to check on us. I really appreciated that she gave us a lot of time to look over the menu and decide. We ordered the mini sliders for appetizer and thought they were super delicious (as well as aesthetically pleasing!). One thing that's great about Matchbox is that they will make a small or a large pizza half and half for you if you would like to try multiple types of their delicious flavors. We ended up getting 2 small pizzas, both half and half. We tried the chef's picks of mark's pepperoni & banana peppers, prosciutto & black mission fig, and spicy meatball, and chicken pesto pizzas. We really enjoyed mark's pepperoni banana peppers and the chicken pesto. The Prosciutto & black mission fig was definitely a different and bold flavor- imagine a sweet pizza. I know it's sounds weird but it was surprisingly pleasant and I can see why it's a restaurant favorite. Lastly, we were not big fans of the spicy meatball pizza. Since I was there at lunchtime I did not get to try any of the wine but the selection looked very good. I will definitely come back here and I would recommend it for any type of occasion (or no occasion). read more
