Matchbox never disappoints. They have wonderful service and awesome food. We came for brunch and for dinner during the pandemic and they have done a great job making it comfortable and safe to dine in. I'm obsessed with their Chicken Pesto Pizza and every time I get it, I'm never let down. I also enjoyed the Blackberry Sage Mule. It was refreshing and strong. We made a reservation, and the host was nice and seated us quickly even though we arrived early. Our waitress on the other hand was INCREDIBLY slow and acted like we were inconveniencing her. It took forever to get waters, and I ordered a drink during happy hour and after waiting for over 15 minutes, I finally had to go inside to the bar and get my drink myself. Then we finally ordered and that took another 25 minutes before anyone got their plates. We waited again another 10 to15 minutes to get a refill on a beverage and her attitude was snotty and clearly letting her bad day affect her work. The food was subpar and overpriced. If the place was understaffed causing the wait times to be so long, then communication of a simple, sorry we're understaffed tonight or something along those lines would've sufficed. read more

A perfectly adequate pizza joint. Matchbox has a pretty decent pizza, probably some of the better pizzas I've eaten on the east coast that aren't in New York City. The ambiance is mildly casual with sports broadcasted on TV and an active bar but you could also dress up here and not feel super out of place here if you wanted to. The interior is comfortable, looks very postmodern with a semi-open Kitchen and a brick oven that can be seen from the entrance. In my opinion I love seeing the kitchens and the pizza oven, it's just cool. I found that my server was very quick and nice, unfortunately I wasn't able to catch her name. Although the wait time during the dinner rush was around 30-45 minutes, we were seated in a bit less than 30, amazing. The service and food were quick, we were given water and ordered around 2 minutes after being seated. The food arrived in around 20-25 minutes, reasonable enough for what a colleague and I ordered. For the food we split: The Meatball & Fried Calamari appetizer, a split 14-inch pizza of the Pepperoni + Hot Honey and the Holy Grail Margherita. Finally I finished the meal with a slice of NY cheesecake and blueberry sauce. The meatball itself and the tomato sauce were nicely seasoned with a light note of spice to it to excite the palate. The meatball was quite juicy and delicious. The plating I found was weird by having the piece of garlic bread that comes with the meatball to be completely covering the meatball. This could be a decision to make it a surprise or something but I would've just preferred having the garlic bread on the side. The garlic bread itself is the weakest part of the dish, it's just a flat bread of pizza dough which is nice but it wasn't crusty or crunchy enough for a textural difference and the garlic flavor is just SLIGHTLY there, I'd prefer a more garlic punch with a possibly more herby flavor and baked a bit more. I would still order this dish but the garlic bread is not at all noteworthy. The Fried Calamari is extremely nothing to write home about. It pretty much exists to add nice texture, it's unseasoned and mostly carried by the lemon aioli. I liked the fried Jalapeños in the dish more than the calamari because of its stronger and actually noticeable flavor. I would not order this again. The Pizza is actually pretty damn good. I liked the balance of the Margherita a lot. I liked how cheesy the pizza is, the basil had a nice freshness and the tomato sauce had a balanced sweetness. Now the pepperoni + hot honey slice I liked a little less. I loved the spicy vodka sauce for the pizza and the pepperoni was cooked to a satisfying crisp, however the hot honey was a bit heavy-handed in my opinion. I found the pizza a bit TOO sweet, I would've liked it more if the hot honey was hotter and there was less of it. Something I noticed is that the center of the pizza gets soggy after only a couple minutes, I would've liked it if the pizza was baked more. I would definitely order the margherita pizza again and ask for it to be cooked a bit more. Finally, the Cheesecake was a nice highlight of the meal. It had that sour tart flavor that any good NY cheesecake should have. I also liked that their graham cracker crust is minimal. Personally I like the graham cracker crust but should be kept at a minimum or else the cake gets too bitter. It was very rich and the blueberry compote on top is nice. Nice blueberry fragrance but it's not overly sweet, the whole blueberries dotted inside the compote still have their slight crisp texture and it added a nice layer to the dish. I would order again. Side note: All the food of appetizers and entrees all came at the same time which is a little strange but I can understand why because we came in during the dinner rush(~7PM). Overall, I would eat here again if I was nearby in Washington D.C. but I would never actively make the drive out to Matchbox or any other of its other locations. read more

I used to adore the Matchbox on 14th St NW, so since it closed I thought I'd give Penn Quarter a try. WRONG MOVE. FIrst of all I should have peeped Penn Quarter's health score- 87 out if 100, before ordering.Not good. Once we got our food we understood the score. Let's start with the Good - fried calamari was absolutely delish for sure. Now for the Bad - the crispy chicken salad and the apple & pear salad - both had literally moldy spring mix. The Avocado in the Chicken salad was mostly black. The apples and pears were discolored too. Ended up throwing both salads out. Now for the Ugly - crab and artichoke dip - the restaurant sent a stone cold, small Styrofoam container of crabmeat with shaved cheese on top. There was nothing dippy about this. It was cold, apparently had never been baked or heated and just plain odd - see picture below. In my 20+ years ordering out from DC restaurants never seen the like. So here we sit disgusted and bamboozled. Shame on you Matchbox of Penn Quarter. You get 2 stars fir the calamari and zero for everything else. read more

The crispy chicken sandwich was delicious! No complaints about this dish. The tuna poke bowl was not my favorite. The tuna portion was fine, but the rice was not good at all. The rice was hard and clumpy. It tastes like the leftover rice you refrigerate overnight to let it harden up. This rice would have been great for fried rice; for a tuna poke bowl under the salad section, not good. I would not order this again. Milkshake flavor was satisfactory. However, it was way too watery. Also not worth it. The waitress was great! Very friendly! The hostess could probably be a little friendlier. What a great place. We had been walking for a few hours and we were not dressed up so we were looking for a casual spot with good food and drinks. Well this place was it. Everything was so on point. We started with the jalapeño cucumber margarita that was soooo good that we needed another. Then they brought out a complimentary order of bread which was like a mini pizza with fresh minerals with fresh pasta sauce. Delicious. My husband and I read the reviews and we were sad they just had changed the menu but our waitress guided us thru the best of the new stuff. We had a burger with the side of the apple / pear salad with fresh blue cheese. It was cooked perfect. I had the crab cake which was HUGE and loaded with tons of crab in abed if tartar sauce, a side of potatoes and fresh asparagus. My husband raved it was the best crab cake he ever had and the sides I have to say were amazing- the garlic and lemon shone through! We ate outside on the street patios and the weather was beautiful. Went in around 4pm on a weekday for happy hour. Spent a lot of money and got shafted on falsely advertised happy hour discounts. Food was decent. When we were seated (by the manager), no one mentioned that only certain food and drink items, and only if seated at the bar, "qualified" for happy hour. Rather, the menus we were handed (and the sign on the wall above our heads!) simply stated the hours for happy hour. Nothing more, nothing less. We ordered more food and drink than we would otherwise have, because we understood the happy hour pricing applied to us. Then got a surprise bill with no discounts. The waitress played dumb and acted like she had no idea why. We spoke to the manager who initially told us "too bad," as we hadn't ordered off the secret happy hour menu (which we didn't know about and were not given a copy of). At this point it was clear to us this wasn't a mistake on behalf of the restaurant staff, but instead a routine, predatory practice that all the staff were accustomed to. After we informed him this situation was unacceptable, the manager disappeared to "talk to the general manager" in true sleazy car salesman fashion, and reappeared saying he could give us the happy hour discounts only on the applicable items. Which he did, after hunting and pecking on the billing computer for about 20 minutes while we tapped our feet, the meal long since over. The discount ended up being less than $20 on an almost-$200 total, because again, most of what we ordered was not (unbeknownst to us) on the happy hour menu. Thanks guys! Honestly, we should have got up and walked at that point. Instead, we paid the bill and resolved to inform as many people as we could about their predatory scheme. read more

Pepperoni pizza was good. Cooked in wood oven so the crust had the burn spots which was good but the pepperonis were a bit too burned. Still a tasty pizza. Crab cake sandwich is a must!! Truly delicious!! Large chunks of crab. I like that it starts falling apart when biting, a sign that they aren't using too much bread crumbs to bind it. I was at Matchbox this Sunday. The experience was very poor. I have been loyal to your chain in Washington and Arlington but experienced such poor food. I ordered 3 mini hamburgers which arrived cold, especially the onion fries. Next my pizza the white bacon was cold and tasted terrible with a tiny piece of bacon slice per every few pizzas. To boot our server who was busy forgot our cutlery and plates. If I knew I would have had a frozen pizza. I was with someone who is disabled. Your entrance has steps. Are we not in 2024?! My friend and I had a taste for some burgers, so we decided on Matchbox for dinner. The restaurant was fairly empty due to the pandemic, which was great. We were able to sit at a booth that was properly distanced from the other diners. Our waitress seemed to be the only one working that evening, but she was excellent! Very friendly, and prompt. I ordered the bistro burger, medium well and my friend got the crab cake burger. I can't speak for my friend, but my burger was very tasty and tender. I believe it was a bit too pink to be medium well, but I was famished and the burger was great otherwise, so I ignored that finding. I would definitely return to probably order the exact same burger. Was walking by on a Wednesday about 5 or so, trying to find somewhere to have a snack and stumbled upon this place. So glad we did! It happened to be happy/social hour so it was nice to be able to take advantage of that. We ordered from the social hour menu 2 drinks and a 10" pizza. We were thrown off that for happy hour 6 wings were $14 so as much as we wanted to try the wings, we didn't. Our drinks were good, I got the guavarita it was really good nice guava flavor. We got the meat pizza minus bacon it was really good! We split it (3 slices each) and probably would have been full with another appetizer but we hadn't eaten all day so we might have just been extra hungry. Service was really good as well I can't remember our servers name but he was really nice and just attentive enough. The restaurant was pretty empty and everything came out pretty quickly- my only regret was not trying that chocolate chip bread pudding it was calling my name but I passed on it so If ever I make it back to DC I'll definitely try that but get the pizza it's so good! read more

The pizza arrived before the drinks and there was pieces of plastic and paper in the pizza. Happened to be staying nearby and walked by this place. We made a quick reservation for a party of 9 and they quickly accommodated. Had the matchbox mule and was blown away. It was perfect after a long day of walking around DC sightseeing. I wanted to try the mojito for a second drink but the mule was too good and I had to have a second. The food was amazingly the brined then fried half chicken was amazing and juicy. It's the best chicken I've ever had. I wish I had a place like this near where I lived . We needed to ask the hostess for a waitress after at least 15 minutes. Drinks from the bar were forgotten and food orders were wrong. Our waitress brought 3 of 4 meals and needed to be reminded while she aimlessly wandered the restaurant with another tables food that we saw her bring back to the kitchen 2 times before she got it to the correct table. People who came in after we ordered received their food prior to us. At one point I went to the bar to get water because our waitress was nonexistent for so long that the entire table was out.
