The food is good but nothing like nickel n diming your costumes. I ordered a specialty pizza n asked to substitute one of the toppings. Well they charged me a whole dollar for onions even though I had eliminated the kalamata olives. Seems like jabbing your client base n will talk to the management if I ever go back again. What a hidden gem! The food was fantastic, great service and friendly staff from the manager to the servers. The restaurant was clean and provided a great atmosphere. I ordered the Beef short ribs and they were amazing. Great flavor and tender, served with veggies and mashed potatoes. My wife had a crumbled blue cheese burger and it was amazing as well. Our sister in-law ordered the Salmon and was just as pleased with her meal. Our brother in law ordered the spare ribs and he couldn't find a thing to complain about, as he finished his entire plate. We all tried different desserts and they were a great compliment to finish the meal. They have a great wine selection and the prices were very reasonable for the quality of the wine you receive. I recently attended a group event here, which included appetizers, salad and pizza for about $18/person. I didn't coordinate the event so I'm not sure if this price reflects their regular menu prices or not, but we had our own designated server and own room, so I feel like this was a good value for what we got. They had water set up for us, so there was no having to wait for a water refill. The appetizers were good, but not great. The salad was surprisingly an Asian noodle salad with peanuts, soba and greens. It was very tasty and presented in a cute Chinese takeout box with chopsticks. The pizza brought out was a variety of styles, cut into teeny tiny pieces, so as to feed many. It was very good, but it's really hard to go wrong with pizza. My only complaints would be that for a group of about 40 people, there were all of five tables set up. This, in addition to the fact that we were not given plates of any kind, only napkins, to set our food on, made for some messy and difficult eating. read more

They've added a wine shop and removed most of the tables. The high-top tables that used to be open bar seating are now dinner tables, so you might get seated right next to the bar and tv. Service still sucks. This time the waiter brought me the wrong beer and the table next to us a red wine when they asked for pinot grigio. A cup of soup took 15 minutes to arrive when the place was only about half full. I want to love this place, I really do. But they've completely lost the plot. read more

Great neighborhood spot. Phenomenal wine selection may be Sacramento best. Very diverse menu matches what you want whether quick, gourmet, sandwich, fish, salad (big or small, with meat or without), and great desserts. I've never had a bad meal, always get treated well. When they first opened, the servers were many, but needed training which has noticeably improved. In fact, rarely can you even casually complain about the servers. Outdoor area is great as it is very secure allowing our 3 little guys (almost 3yr olds) to exert their energy without disturbing other patrons. Protected from the wind, clean and quiet. So I went here for dinner with my fiancé. I don't know about their pizza because I have not had it yet but what I can tell you is that their burgers are good. The customer service and atmosphere is very good here. I Enjoy sitting outside and dining when the weathers nice. I would recommend this place for any kind of get together and dinner. I have eaten here a couple of times, and it is really hit and miss. I keep going back because it is close and occasionally they have great food. One time I ordered a California Pizza to go and I was super annoyed when the sun dried tomatoes were actually fresh tomatoes. This made the pizza super soggy and gross by the time I opened it at home. Another time I ordered the lamb ragu pasta dish that was on special that night. The pasta was delicious, but the waiter came running out with a second dish after I had already dug in to tell me that the second dish didn't contain any peppers (I am super allergic). This sent me in a panic and I am not really sure what they were thinking because the dish didn't actually have peppers. The last time I came I ordered the Roasted Leg of Lamb with cous cous. Apparently they do not understand the difference between sun dried tomatoes and fresh because again the menu said sun dried, but they turned out to be fresh. Again the dish was watered down by the tomato juice and this made the dish pretty gross. They did however include a ton of lamb, so you definitely get what you pay for with the specials. After reading a glowing profile of Matteos Pizza & Bistro in the December/January issue of SacTown Magazine we couldn't believe a place so cool had moved into the old Steve's Pizza Place location at Five Points. We dropped by first chance we got to check it out. Apparently we went in with over-inflated expectations. Matteos was freezing cold the night we visited. The guys in our party had to share their jackets with the women and we all ended up shivering. As for the meal it went like this: One of our pizza's was burned on the bottom and delivered to the table cold, the Chop-Chop salad was almost completely devoid of dressing, and the Ziti with sundried tomatoes included only five small slivers of sundried tomatoes. A bowl of soup arrived as a cup, and The "kids macaroni and cheese" (which was really bow ties with Alfredo sauce) apparently didn't get in with our order and arrived eight minutes after the rest of our food. The wait staff was extremely friendly. But they were not good. When our soup and salad arrived before our bread we asked if the bread was on its way. Rather than just saying "It will be right out," our waitress said, "I wanted to make sure the soup got out while it was still hot." Not to be harsh, but at the time we didn't need excuses. We just needed our bread. When it came time for the check, half our party had left and the other half was standing at our table and we still had to remind our waitress that the check was ready to be paid. The food itself was not bad. The ingredients were tasty and well chosen, but they were put together with no flair whatsoever. Been here twice. First time had some issues but they had just opened. Gave them another try recently and it was great. We went on a Saturday night and were told it would be a 20 minute wait. We ended up scoring two spots at the bar in 5 minutes. A young but very friendly staff. We were well taken care of and got to watch a game, they have a good amount of 40 inch flat screens around. The Matteo's pizza with chorizo is awesome. We got this both times and it's perfect. We also split the Asian salad and substituted seared ahi for the chicken....great. We hope they can make more wines available by the glass, and they have some big beer varieties planned. Plus their full bar is soon to be in operation. The owners were very present both times we were here. The wife works the front and Matt the kitchen but hits the floor often. It might just be chance but both times we were here Matt came up to us, shook our hands and asked us how everything was very interested and open to our thoughts. They'll find their 5 star rhythm soon and have a patio planned down the road. My wife and I will be frequent customers of this place. read more

We ate lunch here today- 6 adults and 3 kids and it was fantastic! They have an overwhelming wine menu (350 wines!), and my husband picked something at random that we both ended up really enjoying. We got the baby spinach salad to split and it was super tasty! Then we ordered 3 pizzas between all of us (California, Matteos and the Cheese Please). Oh, for half stars . . . First, the good. Matteo's makes an outstanding thin crust pizza, with among the best wood fired crusts I've ever had. Perfectly crisp, with just a little bit of char and a lot of toothsome chewiness. We tried the four cheese, and a custom with ricotta and bacon, and both were very good. I would absolutely come back here again for pizza. Those who have compared CPK to Matteo's are being very generous to CPK . . . Unfortunately, everything else suffered. Service was slow, which would have been understandable due to the number of customers, except that our server was standing having an extended conversation with another patron while our empty drinks remained unattended. Not that this is the server's fault, but in addition to not having a children's menu, there is only size of pizza, and they will not do split topping pizzas. Wile I understand why, this is not very kid-friendly, especially given the large number of children in the restaurant. Of the other dishes we tried, the Fried Calamari Miso Frito with Fennel and red pepper aioli sounded promising. When it arrived, however, it was totally unseasoned. I almost never use a salt shaker in a restaurant, but even the heaviest of doses along with a splash of lemon could not save it. The aioli was similarly unassertive. Miso Frito was somewhat optimistic, as it consisted only of sweet onions and the separately mentioned fennel, which was cut to small to have any noticeable flavor. The squid itself, while of good quality and perfectly cooked, was tentacle heavy, and had glued itself together in the fryer. The chopped salad was beautifully fresh, but really wasn't a chopped salad -- more of an antipasto in a bowl. It, too, suffered from lack of seasoning. The promised vinegrette tasted more of lemon, and was too light to punch up the flavor. Even the salami generously scattered throughout the dis was overly mild. Finally . . . when most Italian restaurants offer sourdough bread for free, it sets you apart in a bad way to charge $2 for bread and butter . . . it's worse when that $2 gets you 5 rail-thin slices of non house made bread. I came to Matteo's planning on getting one of the pricier entrees, but wound up ordering as i did to accommodate my kids. While the entrees going out around me looked beautiful, I don't think I would return for one until I am confident the kitchen is doing a better job with the basics. read more

We came Sunday around noon, and brunch was still available, but we both opted for a pizza. Which was amazing! So flavorful! Here for lunch. Two separate areas, each with a bar; a woman sat in one working on her laptop using the available wi-fi; the other offers two television screens. On display in the short annex walk-through is a beautiful photograph of the Nicaraguan grandmother of one of the owners. There is a variety of seating options - standard table to cocktail table heights, bar counter, an offset corner table and outdoor seating. The 400 international wine list (encased in a cork cover) includes red wine blends and dessert, a short by-the-glass selection and the remainder offers the retail and cork fee prices ($15). The "Wine Flight Weekly" is three 2-oz glasses. Sandwich was okay; nothing special. The toothpicks holding the two halves together had a certain flair. Next time, I'll try one of their pizzas. I would try them again for lunch and pizza. We went here early around 6pm on a Thursday so there was no wait. It nice inside without being stuffy, nice patio area too. We were seated by a large window, so the downfall being any cars parking right in front the headlights shine right in your face....they might want to consider some window coverings....Anyway the food. We love Matteo's as a dine in restaurant. Great food. But for take-out, not so much. Based on one order, they are the home of the world's stingiest pizza. I ordered a takeout pizza: black olives, mushrooms, prosciutto, and fresh tomato slices (not cooked) on a gluten-free crust, with a cheese and tomato sauce base. I received an over-cooked, crispy-brown, cracker-stiff pizza crust with an adequate amount of prosciutto hiding a scarcity of the other requested items underneath. Beneath the prosciutto there was a suggestion of sauce and a hint of cheese, with a sparse scattering of mushrooms and olives. Yes, the tomato slices were present in an acceptable amount, but they were cooked, contrary to my request. Matteo's, really? How hard can it be? read more

Had the Treehugger BLT here which was pretty tasty. They have polenta fries which I highly recommend if you're there. And of course, there french fries and so is their beer selection. In all honestly, I'm probably going back one of these days. Its closeby to my finace's parents house and we like to stay close for lunches with his friends. The outdoor seating is the best thing about this place - I've never even sat inside, what's the point? Oh, right, mosquitoes...well, besides those little buggers it was a lovely experience. Except someone asked me today if I got a tetanus shot because the welts on my shoulder are so huge! I digress.. The menu is pretty small, and doesn't offer a lot of entrees you would consider traditional Italian fare. So, since nothing really leaped of the menu at me, I tried the fish tacos and they were not good. The burger is ok...but pizza is really the way to go here. I had the pizza on a previous visit and I enjoyed it. Bottom line - don't go here unless you're in the mood for pizza or just want to drink some wine in a nice outdoor setting. I have visited this establishment three times, twice for lunch and once for dinner this past Wednesday. First visit: Very welcoming and the pizza was delicious! We were seated by a nice young man who was very knowledgable about the establishment and the food and brought us our beverages. This experience definitely made me want to come back! Second visit: Extremely disappointing. It was a beautiful day and me and my partner were seated in the outside area. It took a very long time for our server to take our drink orders and took over an hour for one pizza to come out. This was a late lunch and there was only one other party there. The server seemed apathetic about his job and it felt like he had forgotten about us. My partner had to walk inside to ask for a check because our server had not checked on us for over a half hour! Our second experience was 1 star at most. Third visit: the reason I am giving this establishment 5 stars. Due to a craving for pizza me and my partner decided to lower our expectations of service and try Matteo's again. We were greeted by the same young man (named Cheo, I was sure to get his name this time) and received excellent service that night. Cheo was once again very welcoming and renewed our faith in the quality of service here. Our server was nice and attentive as well. Love this place, whether it's for dinner or lunch. Prices are very reasonable for the quality of food and service received. Despite the number of times I have dined here, I haven't been let down yet. Specials are updated daily, with two soups of the day so you always have a choice. I would recommend any of the pizzas, which have been described in previous reviews, if you're looking to get the most bang for your buck. Salads are generous and well put together, so if you're a salad person I'd say go for it. I personally like going in for lunch to escape any wait, and enjoy the happy hour that starts at 3:30. read more

Whine, whine, whine. The polenta fries were interesting but not at all what I expected. There were 4 large chunks of polenta with marinara sauce. I think a name change for this menu item would be a good idea. The toppings on the Greek pizza were delicious but the bottom was burnt. I was hungry so I ate it anyway and washed each bite down with a glug of wine. The carrot cake was moist and delicious EXCEPT that they drizzled raspberry sauce all over it. I scraped off as much as I could. The sauce was not listed on the menu. Had it been I would have requested the cake without it. I think the biggest issue here is the misleading menu. read more

Since starting my kitchen remodel I have stopped in here quiet a few times. Every time I have always had really good service and even better food. When you first go in, the inside will surprise you compared to what the outside is. It used to be an old Steves Pizza resturant, which you would never know. They have made this place so much nicer. The tables are big and spaced nicely. The decor is very clean and modern. I love the look of the bar at the back of the restaurant. The staff have been friendly, attentive, and most are very knowledgeable when it comes to their wine list. The food is always fresh, hot and yummy. I have never had any of the problems that some of the reviewers have. I love their take on polenta fries! The salads are fresh, colorful and tasty. They have the option to get a small or large portion which is really nice when I'm stopping in for a quick lunch with friends. I have only ordered lunch specials and each time I have gotten exactly what I ordered. The corn chowder they feature on special seasonally is to die for. The corn is sweet,flavorful and tender without being mushy. I'm looking forward to their upcoming soup specials are once the weather starts to get cold. Make sure you save room for the homemade ice cream cookie sandwiches!! They are so good!! Don't try to share, you will end up with another after your first bite!! read more

Had takeout here while visiting friends in the area and I enjoyed the food. The crabcake specials were especially flavorful. Both pizzas we had - the Stu (mushrooms, prosciutto, caramelized onions, Italian Fontina, arugula, white truffle oil) and the California (organic chicken, baby artichoke hearts, cherry tomatoes, green olives, kalamata, garlic cream) - were really good. I've been here twice now, both times for lunch. Most recently I had the southwest caesar salad and it was OK. Nothing great and I prefer just a regular caesar -- one without seasoned tortilla chips on it. I enjoyed the creme brulee the most -- I had never had one with berries in it and it was very good. The atmosphere is very nice, although chilly in the restaurant. The service was decent, though kind of slow. Overall it was an average experience. I will only keep going here because it is close to my Grandma's house and she enjoys it more than I do. read more

A few weeks ago went there for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. Walking into the place there were only a few customers within and they were quiet for an afternoon right at noon. We were seated right away and informed our waiter that we were waiting for additional people. Half of us were there the other MIA. So, we looked over their 13 page wine list with about 50 listed on one page. They do wine tasting and they are a vendor. While waiting we ordered garlic bread and salad. The garlic bread and salad came up right away. Ate some of the garlic bread, but not any of the salad. The garlic bread was good overall. After everyone arrived we ordered three pizza (chicken/meat/cheese) the meat and cheese was average; kinda of bland and tasteless. The chicken was great. I ended up eating two of the eight slices.. Don't think we will be going back. The customer service was slow and we had to get our waiters attention to order and request the check.... read more

Three stars for the Tree Hugger BLT, -1 Star for just how bad the Steak was. For once I enjoyed my food while my husband did not. I got the Tree Hugger BLT ($11) which uses portabella for the bacon. At first they put it on normal sandwich bread and then the waitress asked them to fix it so it's on the walnut wheat sourdough as the menu indicates. Definitely worth the fear of spit to get it on the right bread. The fries it came with were good for some reason. There was nothing special but they tasted better than most. My poor husband was craving steak and got the Bavette Steak ($20) which he said was no good. Lacked flavor and cooked wrong. The sides it came with weren't very good either, devoid of pizazz. We've gone to Matteo's twice, and were basically happy both times. Hence, the A-OK rating. If you are there when they have gazpacho, order it! It is so fresh and tangy, plus it includes avocado, which always makes everything just a little better in my view. We also really enjoyed their calamari - it hasn't ever been overly greasy, which is nice. I prefer the outdoor seating to the indoor. Outdoors, there is a neat looking fountain and a more relaxing atmosphere. Inside is perfectly acceptable - just a bit stark... everything seems to line up too perfectly. The service we received on our first visit was far more accommodating than that on our second, though neither experiences were bad. The second time we went, it was pretty slow, but we were there at an odd time in the middle of the afternoon on a Sunday. Over all, this is a pretty good place to catch a bite to eat. read more

Do yourselves a favor and treat yourself out to Matteos! If not for a full meal then for a glass of wine on their gorgeous patio! The owners Matt and Yvette are SOO wonderful, service is on point, and food is stellar! Had the opportunity to have my bridal shower on their patio, which caters to small, intimate parties so well! The space is beautifully hidden in the back with canopied trees, blooming flowers and succulents, and a lovely water feature that we were not interupted by any of the other patrons. I had a stand up, cocktail-esk party for roughly 20 people and it fit us all perfectly! They were very accommodating and flexible with their menu options so my sweet tooth was overwhelmingly satisfied with their doughnut holes normally only offered on their brunch menu! My favorite Tree Hugger Sandwich made into bite size pieces were a huge hit, the perfect finger food and not messy to eat. And of course having such a large wine selection really catered to all of my friends and family! A stunning venue for any occasion! read more

Stopped by Matteo's on a weeknight. Its larger inside than it appears. The wait staff was attentive and polite. The menu had a good selection of salad, pizzas and entree's. We liked what we saw on the special's board and both decided to try the steak salad. It came with cook to order steak-which to my mom is very important since she likes her steak rarer than most. Goddess dressing mixed in was divine! The salad was big and filling, and very fresh. Can't wait to go back and order off the menu! read more

The food was tasty and everyone who worked there was very nice. The downside is the long wait time for a table. They do not take reservations for any party under 6 yet, both times I've been with parties of 2 or 3, the wait has been 20 minutes or more. Also, once finally seated, the server was rarely around and everything took a long time arriving to us (drinks, salads, entrees, check). We went for a birthday dinner. We ordered a few different items - a pizza, a burger and chop salad. The pizza was really good and held its shape - always a plus in my book! The burger looked like there was too much bun, but after tasting it I was wrong. It was the perfect amount of bread to burger. The chop salad could have used more salami. The dressing for the salad was a little lite for my liking. This was a nice place to go and it looked like if you had to wait you wouldn't have to wait long.
