Picked up some Bahon Pancit and lumpia for my son's birthday celebration and it tastes just like how mom used to make it. Dining is open and it's odd to not see this place packed like before. There was only three tables open and they set markings on the floor to stand/sit while you're waiting to pick up your food/pay. They even have pens in cups marker "new" and "used" which is handy. Great spot for budget-friendly Filipino food! Lumpia, Sisig, BBQ skewers, you name it and all for a very affordable price. They even offer a lunch buffet that's less than $20. My girlfriend and I had the pleasure of attending one of their Kamayan feasts which cost us a measly $25. A deal for all that food would not fly in D.C. or VA so our minds were blown at such a price. The food on the other hand, was not mind-blowing in my opinion, just average. The quality of food justifies the price and that isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's a place I could eat at everyday. I've been here twice with my friend and we've ordered different entrees and side dishes- we have liked everything! The must order item is the sizzling sisig. If you look around, almost every table has it. The chopped, crispy pork pieces with diced red onions is spectacular. The texture is crispy and the taste has layers of saltiness from the pork, sharpness from the charred red onion, and freshness from the lemon. Leave room for dessert because the crispy turon and creamy halo halo is the best way to end the meal. There's plenty of seating in the dining room and can accommodate larger families. Second time returning to this restaurant two days in a row because they are so good:) today we ordered lupia pork spring rolls, lupia veggie rolls, chicken adobo, and pancit and they are as always amazingly delicious and generous portion. Chicken adobo and the lupia pork were especially great! Perfect seasoning and very high quality like home-made food. Owned by a family and they do lots of catering too. We have several group events coming up with the end of the year so we also ordered catering for next week today. We ordered fried chicken and pancit for the event and I am sure the dishes will be very popular. We also got the halo halo as a returning gift (thank you!!) and it was amazing! Fun spot for Filipino food! I went with several friends after a hike at nearby Seneca Creek State Park, this was in a shopping plaza and lots of free parking and easy to find. Casual atmosphere and great food! We were open to trying something new and trusted our fellow Yelp people that we should try Matthews's grill! None of us were Filipino and we had few expectations about the food or location. It was very easy to find and well marked in a large lot with tons of parking available. On a cooler day, we would have enjoyed the outdoor seating, especially if you have unvaccinated family members etc. Our group was all vaccinated so we went inside, nice and air conditioned and super clean. We were greeted quickly by a waiter and we told him we had three in our group and choice of several nearby tables. They had a few tables occupied mid-day, many Filipino customers, also a good sign for authenticity. We said it was our first time there, and he brought us some menus that had a ton of gorgeous resolution photos, and there was also a QR code to see an online menu. I have had Filipino food maybe two times previously, not at this location and had ordered soups with handmade noodles. Since then, I have gone low carb, so this time I was looking more at the meat and veggie dishes. Lots to choose from! While there, I could see they were preparing a large number of to go items - they do a good business supplying food for parties and nearby essential workers. There were platters of the egg roll shaped appetizers and large stacks of bags getting fluffed out for rapid orders in a Saturday night. We were there between lunch and dinner on Saturday, so very mellow time for eating but they had a flurry of people preparing items for the evening. The tables were solid and very clean. I saw another group leave and the employees had a procedure for using Lysol etc to clean as each table was cleared. They were using one time use compostable paper plates and plastic forks/spoons/knives. It was a casual restaurant, plastic cups and soda in cans etc, but the service was top notch and food very tasty! As I recall, the music playing was soft, popular soft rock type American music, but we were mostly talking with each other and not intrusive, didn't notice any TVs etc. We asked about the items and each picked something different. One friend got a chop suey type stir fry with chicken and shrimp I think. The other friend ordered a fish soup with almost a whole fish in it and lots of veggies. I got the sisig crispy fried pork with liver, onions, hot peppers, and a soft fried egg. We all enjoyed our items! The servings were heavy and on the large size! All of us got about half of our food to go, despite just finishing a hike and being super hungry when we got there! You could probably split items and try the appetizers and have plenty of food. The skewers of meat were really calling to me but I thought I should start with just one item. I would be willing to try next time and take more of my entree home for leftovers! I had my leftovers today and they were just as good the next day. My new favorite Filipino dish! With the crispy texture and the hot peppers, didn't need to reheat it, had a great flavor. The egg was optional and was great at the restaurant and was all eaten, perfectly fried. Everything arrived together a short time after we ordered. We already had plates at our table and they came in to go containers, which was appropriate as we had so much we all had take out. We walked up to the little window to pay when done. My friend treated us picking up the tab, prices looked reasonable for the quality and quantity on the menu. Wow, I am blown away by the service, food quality and taste that Mathews Grill provided us for Father's Day. My wife's family wanted a taste of home and so they made a reservation at Mathews Grill. When we walked in it was slow, I mean not a single person was in there but the place was slammed within 15 minutes of us arriving. Still, nonetheless, the service provided was top notch. Waiters and waitresses helped one another with their tables. As for the food, I've been fed this food for the last three years from my wife's family. It was delicious in their home and just as delicious at Mathews Grill. I was a bit skeptical, you'd like there would be a difference in taste but no, there wasn't. Everything tasted just like home. We had the table packed with food: shrimp, egg rolls, chicken Adobe, bbq chicken, tilapia, veggies like okra, string beans and peppers. Everything was cooked to perfection and I have nothing bad to say about it. Matthew's Grill is one of our favorite Filipino restaurants for authentic Filipino food. The staff is friendly every time we go there. Currently during COVID, they are only doing carry out orders. We usually order the lechon, the pinkabet, which is a traditional dish that includes vegetables like green beans, eggplant, bitter melon, squash and shrimp. One of my favorite dishes is the kare kare which usually has beef in a peanut curry type sauce with vegetables to include bok choy, egg plant, and green beans. It's delicious and is especially delicious at Matthew's Grill. Before COVID, they use to offer a buffet style option for lunch. We really miss this and hope they will be an open to normal standard business hours in the future. This was definitely a good option to try the different menu options they would offer. I don't even know where to start. Bottom line, I absolutely wouldn't recommend this place to anyone unless I hate this person. I wish Yelp could have the option of giving 0 star in the future. Strike1: The bbq chicken I ordered was undercooked/raw, it was just disgusting. Strike 2: I didn't order any rice, they just gave it to me and charged me $2. Strike 3: The actual prices they charged were different from the prices on their menu, and the restaurant didn't even bother to mention anything. I had to find out about it by myself when I paid the bill. Strike 4: The restaurant even charges every customer 4% credit card fee by default. I never saw this anywhere else before. Strike 5: They claimed their fried chicken is one of the 10 best places for fried chicken. LMAO, they must be kidding/high. I had completed an errand nearby in MoCo, got hungry, and remembered to try this highly rated place out. Disclosure. I'm no stranger to Philippine food, as Hidden Gem Manila Mart is in my back yard. Good thing it was just past lunch time, as they close early on Sunday. So make sure you check the hours before heading over. Matthew's is in the Festival center off Muddy Branch, right next to 270 but frustratingly not directly reachable from it. They're all the way back next to Lotte Plaza in a narrow space. Only a dozen tables plus a larger one on a raised mezzanine suitable for larger groups. To get the widest range of flavors, I went for the $18 buffet. Simple but yummy bulalo beef soup, tender pork belly, crispy chicharon (pork rinds), lovely little lumpia (Philippine take on spring rolls) with a savory beef filling, veggies in coconut sauce, chicken adobo (stew, bone in), Kare-kare (curry) beef with a complex mild sauce, delicious sweet and sour fish, dolce de leche pudding, cassava cake, and fresh fruits for dessert. Postprandial Torpor! So, unexpected but delightful flavors, great value, and extremely cordial service. Slam dunk five *****. Overall enjoyed our experience. Like many people we still thought they had their buffet service going. They need to update all of their listings to accurately reflect their current options. Their website indicates they still have buffets. I saw several customers come in and ask but then leave. It would have been great to sample more items. We had and order on pancit, chicken adobe and Matt's crispy Pata. The pancit was our favorite. Parts of the Pata were great and some parts I didn't care for. Also had an order of the chicken Adobe but didn't find it that flavorful at all. I have returned to pick up an order of the pancit because it was that good. And a very large serving. read more

I went there for my birthday. I had the Buddha fight/Kamayan feast. Authentic Filipino food the service was amazing. The staff was so service oriented. They sang me happy birthday at the end and they gave a history of the meal, and tradition so this was the perfect birthday for me. We were able to buy a couple of bottles of bubbly for the celebratory aspect at the beer wine store next door, because they don't serve liquor, but this was a great event and great experience. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in traditional authentic amazing Filipino food, the dessert I forget what it was but it was perfect. Aside from my mom's cooking, this has to be my favorite Filipino restaurant in the area! The owners are very nice and welcoming. They're so passionate about the business that it truly shines in their dishes. Must get here: Appetizer: Street food platter. It comes with fish and lobster balls and with a few pieces of lumpia (egg rolls). Entrees: Sisig - hail to the sisig gods but oh my this is the best one I've had so far! It comes in a hot plate with an egg and trust me it's amazing. Kare-Kare, stuffed squid, fried fish, and lechon kawali are some of my personal favorites. Dessert: Halo-halo of course! Also known as mix-mix, a staple in the Philippines. It has different ingredients with beans, jello, jackfruit, etc. topped with ube ice cream and flan in crushed ice. You can choose a la carte or the buffet menu. Portions are huge and the prices are reasonable. Bring your friends, cousins, siblings, and parents! I'm hyping this place up for a reason. Hankering for some Filipino food on a Sunday night, I made the trek to Gaithersburg and literally arrived at their front door at 5:25 pm. Mathew's Grill website and the sign on the front door indicate closing time is 6pm. As I secure my door car and start to walk up, I see a woman hurriedly get into a waiting SUV in front of the store with a few large bags, so I'm thinking this is a customer with a take-out order. WRONG! When I get to the front door, I see all the lights are off, and find the doors locked. So it's pretty obvious, that the workers decided to close early, and then try and make a quick getaway before any other customers attempted to arrived. I also tried to make a few calls to the restaurant's number, but of course, the line just kept ringing with no explanation as to why they closed early. Hey, I used to work in the restaurant industry, so I understand closing early from time to time, but at least have a sign on the door or something. And at a minimum, the workers who were trying to rush out the door, could've said something to me. I'm disappointed since this place came HIGHLY recommended by a few people including my nurse practitioner and realtor. Not sure I'll make the effort to come back, since I'm not usually in this part of Gaithersburg. ONE STAR!!! read more

I went for lunch Saturday and ordered the Crispy Pata, Pinakbit, and fried Lumpia. The Pinakbit and Lumpia were very good, but the Crispy Pata was one of the best I've had in a long time! The skin was incredibly crispy, and the meat was very moist (which is a problem with some places burning the meat). Anyway, I can't wait to return and try the other dishes. The owner Reymond give us a sample of the Sigsig, and man, I can't wait to order it next time. Speaking of which, the staff was really friendly and accommodating. If you plan on going, go early. Before I start this review, I need to disclose that I'm a Filipino reviewing Matthews's Grill and I may be harsher than other reviewers. And for most Filipinos no restaurant cooking will ever top what your favorite aunt or your dad can cook. With that out of the way, I can start. The biggest complaint that I have is that the Filipino cuisine served at Mathew's Grill is watered down and not as true as it can be to what true Filipino food should be. Pancit, adobo, Lumpia and all other Filipino food staples are served in both the buffet and the a la carte menu. For me, the food although it's good just seems to lack that extra oomph. To be honest, it's a bit bland. Maybe, they are trying to attract a more diverse customer base so they feel that the dishes do not need to be as robust. Please, Mathews Grill chef, let it go and go back to your native roots and cook the dishes as they should be cook. Why then, you wonder why the 4 stars??? Well, it's due to the staff. They are so friendly and accommodating. Whenever, my family and I come here, we are always greeted as if we are family. Everyone is treated like family. Not only are they friendly, but they do know how each dish is executed and can in excruciating detail provide the ingredients to each of their entree's. In fact, I've seen the regular waiter even at their busiest, go out of his way to ensure all is well, water is filled timely and answer newbies questions with patience even with the rudest customer. He's unflappable. Since Filipino food is so time consuming to prepare, and one must have it, we will continue to be regulars at Mathews Grill. Someday, the chef will let it all go and their dishes will be as good as what my dad prepares, but until then I'll just add the extra oomph by dousing some of my favorites with the Patis, the sarsa, vinegar&garlic and all of the other sau, sau sauces. read more

I found this place to be mediocre. I end up getting the pancit and chicken adobo. Both were not very tasty dishes. The service was fine. We were mostly alone for a good chunk of the hour that we were waiting for food and I was surprised that the service was that slow it's considering we were the only customers. The other thing that was a little bizarre about the food was the server said everything was all set when we asked for the check. Then we walked out I'm thinking that the meal was comped because it was a birthday meal. Anyway the server then came running out after us to tell us that we didn't pay our bill. All of my only annoying, this wasn't clear when we were asking for the bill so we came back and paid for it. It was my first time here. I have yet to try the halo halo but the pictures make it look very tasty. I had the pork sigsig. The taste of the sizzling pork was delicious. You can taste the onions, the seasoning, and the hot peppers. The egg in the middle is a good touch, as it is still cooking in the sizzling skillet and the runny egg made the bits of the pork stick together. Adding it with the rice was very filling. Friendly staff, food is great, especially if you like the Filipino food in general. The venue has a good amount of seating and has a TV to watch games or news or whatever is on there. They have a vast number of choices of filipino foods to choose from a la carte. This includes appetizers such as lumpia (egg rolls, summer rolls), entrees, or even desserts like halo-halo (kinda like bing soo, but maybe better). They also have a buffet for around $14 on weekday dinner, $12 for weekday lunch, or $18 for weekends If you do not know which food to choose. This is also a great way to start if you have not tasted Filipino food before. All in all, food comes out hot and tastes great! There is plenty of parking in front of the restaurant, and it is located in a shopping center 2-3 minutes from the 270 exit. Overall this place is a great family friendly spot with great food, great staff, and great personable owners if they are there. They will always welcome you with open arms and a smile on their face. Ordered dinner for 5 (lumpia, chicken skewers, pinkabet, tocino, rice for all), for about ~25 bucks per person. I expected the chicken skewers to be quite small and was very pleasantly surprised to receive giant skewers, with bbq chicken on it about the size of my extended hand!
