The gf and I visited this Filipino restaurant from Nashville. This is probably one of the places I've ever been to with superb customer service! My girlfriend 92 year old grandmother, the girlfriend and I really enjoy all of the food. We all got the buffet to try all of it, the food was good but it was a little pricey but there are plenty to choose from. We went on a Sunday but other days the buffet prices are less. Shoutout to one of the young guy who walk us to specially the gf grandmother to all of the food, he was very patient and describe each food, he talked about how it was cook and what ingredients are used. I recommend all of the food specially the lumpia and longanisa! If I lived close by I'd definitely come back! read more

The food was decent (though the lumpia are tiny) but the service was absolutely horrible. We sat down and no one came to bring menus until we hailed one of the wait staff down. In fact, the number of times the waiters bothered to check up on us could be counted on one finger. It was essentially non-existant, and when we wanted to order dessert the waiteress was visibly annoyed. Items take absolutely forever to come out, and when I went to pay, the staff would rather be texting than taking the 2 seconds to swipe my card. Oh BTW, paying by card gets charged an additional 4%. The service was so non-existant that for the first time in years I gave a tip less than 20%. I had come once before and the service was fine, but maybe that's because the owners were present. I don't make a lot of Filipino food - or actually I don't make any, ever.. But my Mom makes some of the best, and when I can't just drive one state over to eat some, I go to Matthew's Grill. Matthew's Grill has lunch and dinner buffet everyday. This is really the best way to eat Filipino food so you can taste a little bit of everything all in one sitting. And really, all Filipinos know is a buffet. We have so many rich, delicious dishes that we can't just pick one or two anytime there's a party. And there's always a party. Anyway, back to the restaurant. I've been a few times for the buffet and always tell myself I need to come back and order a la cart. The buffet changes daily, so you likely won't get the same thing every time. The few staples I did notice though are Chicharron (Filipino pork rinds aka the best pork rinds you'll ever taste), Lumpia (small Filipino egg roll) and of course white rice. My non-Filipino boyfriend LOVES the chicharron and I do too. You can tell it's freshly made, always perfectly crispy, and dare I say, even a little creamy?.. that it will cling to the crevices of your teeth. There's no going around it. But it's SO good and that's what floss is for. There is always a good mix of fried food, soup/stew type dishes, and something with a noodle. There is also always a fish dish and a veggie dish. Of course there's always fresh fruit and 2-3 classic Filipino dessert like cassava cake, or flan, or buko of some kind. This is clearly a family owned restaurant and your server will likely be a family member. They are always warm and welcoming and reminds me of walking into an Aunt's house. My only gripe is that the dinner and weekend buffet is a bit pricy - $18 and lunch is $12. I know everything is cooked fresh everyday, so I don't mind paying this, but I do wish it was a bit less for dinner. read more

Thought I would try this place today and so we did. I enjoyed the soup and the desert but wasn't a fan of the food because it was sweet and bland. I would have liked some spice or like a spice tray they offer at Thai places.... it was a bit on the oily side as well for me personally... I find that there is not much variety other than pork..there was just one chicken dish and fish dish... the rest was pork... Please be aware that I tried the buffet only... I believe they charged me more than I should be charged. Buffet prices were supposed to be $12 according to another yelp review... I had the buffet with my partner and I ordered a Halo-Halo which was $6... I should be charged $31+tax... I was charged $44.52... so I don't know if I was cheated and I would like people to be aware of the bills before they end up paying more than they are supposed to. read more

Hands down, the best crispy pata I've ever had. So crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. And the portions here are generous for the price. Even if this place is a bit out of the way, it's worth taking a trip out here especially if you live in Maryland and you love Filipino food. The sisig was also super crispy and flavorful. First time trying Matthews Grill since my girlfriend has mentioned it many times in conversation. Being located in Gaithersburg made it a challenge to finally try this place but today was the day. Let's say it's definitely worth the drive and the money. The food was delicious and the customer service was absolutely friendly and welcoming. It wasn't part of the buffet but we had it and it was so crunchy, had a good amount of fat, and extremely flavorful for what it was. Since this was my first time trying sisig, I can't compare it to anything. My mouth waters thinking about their sisig. Met Raymond, the owner on my visit. The place was very clean and service was fast and too notch. While waiting they offered appetizers from the buffet. That is one of a kind service you won't get anywhere else. Raymond was so nice and friendly. He made you feel welcomed and his staff were very nice and helpful as well. They were all attentive. I ordered a few items from the menu (lechon kawali, street food platter) plus sago and gulaman. They were all delicious and tasted authentic! I just wished he had another sauce for the fish and shrimp balls. Something with a little kick besides the sweet brown sauce. I would definitely go back here whenever I'm in the area. This restaurant is impressive and a great stop for authentic Filipino meal. We had the buffet and they have quite a variety of meals. Some of the meals they had in the buffet were bulalo soup, chicharon, egg roll, palabok, fish, kare-kare, variety of meat dishes and desert. The food presentation is simple and well labeled. Not a lot of decoration around the buffet which made the food stand out. The buffet isn't quite big like other buffet but its great enough because the taste and seasoning of the meals are balance. Filipino dishes are known to be salty or oily. But this food was not oily and most of not salty. The seasoning of each meal was perfect! In addition, they have a la carte menu and the prices are reasonable. I got the halo - halo and they have ube in it. That's rare to find in other places. Overall, this place is worth going to when you are in Gaitherburg, MD or even craving Filipino Food. The restaurant isn't big but quite cozy and clean. The ambience of the place feels like home. I normally regard buffet as merely to stuff an empty stomach. This place is way more than that. The lunch buffet had a very nice variation: pork spring roll, deep fried pork skin, shrimp rice noodles, curry chicken, bbq ribs as fried catfish as main dishes. And it doesn't just win by number: bittermelon, okra, squash... with all the veggies that are typically Asian but hard to see in Asian buffet, this seems more like a feast than filling food. I loved all of them! The chicken soup was very well flavored, chicken was very tender too. Dessert were coconut rice pudding and some jelly dessert. Both had great texture and were not too sweet. Great for the ~$12 price! Staff were very friendly. My server to8ok his time to go over all the dishes they had on the buffet in detail. I've been here several times and catered a whole lechon for a party which was amazing and probably the best lechon I had in the md area. I tried the dinner buffet here which was $18 and my kids ate free which was a good deal. My favorite was the kare kare, menudo, lumpia and pancit. I LOVE THE LECHON BELLY FROM HERE. Ordered catering and dined in a few times here, and I'm truly a fan! The weekend lunch buffet has a lot of options, your typical lumpia, pancit, adobo, fresh fruit and dessert. Occasionally, for the weekend buffet they will have lechon belly! I am a fan of the food, though some shortcuts are taken (like Kare Kare is mostly bone, and no meat).. The Lechon Kawali is overly fried and doesn't leave the tenderness of the pork. However, the Lechon belly is simply amazing, cooked to perfection and has the greatest flavor roasted. I don't really use the sauce that comes with it, Mang Tomas, which I know is a staple. Recommend trying it for Filipino cuisine. read more

Filipino food is finally rising around Maryland and I couldn't be more excited. Went to Matthew's with my brother and his friend for the lunch buffet on a Saturday which had a solid line up of rice, pansit, lumpia, pork dish, veggie dish and deserts (flan, ambrosia, and different fresh cut fruits). My brother and friends did admit that ordering food off the menu is a lot better than the buffet selection. But since it was a first time for myself and someone else, it always good to start with the buffet. I tried a little bit of everything and was not disappointed. The food trays were always full and the food was never dry and didn't taste like it has been sitting in the water bath or burner. The staff was quite attentive even though it was slightly busy. Our water glasses were always full and empty plates disappeared whenever we went back for more food. After our meal, we ordered halo-halo for the table and I was blown away. I've heard of halo-halo but never actually got the chance to try it. Every bite was amazing with different combinations every time the spoon went through all the layers of banana, casava, sweet milk, fruit gelatin, flan, crushed ice and ube ice cream. I went even back to the buffet table for more flan and added it to the halo-halo. The Muddy Branch shopping center isn't as glamorous as RIO or Downtown Crown but Matthew's Grill would be a great place to check out if you ever want to venture away to something different. read more

Crispy and delicious. At first it felt super oily and fatty but it gets better. The food is a bit heavy. The portions are huge! We had so much leftover. I ordered food on Sunday and on Monday I packed some of the leftover for lunch and it was even better. That oily taste was gone and there was a slight chewiness in the meat which I really liked! They made sure to pack all the sauces and I made sure to put the sauce on the meat. The soy vinegar and sauces help it feel less heavy because the tart and it goes so well together I've always wanted to try halo halo. It was good. There were chunks on ube, red bean, and other things in the halo halo. It was much better than I expected. I mean I love ube but ube ice cream? I've only heard about. Very inviting modern casual interior and superb service. Servers are very well educated about the menu and friendly. Raymond the owner is always friendly, smiling and provides top notch services! On top of that, i bumped into Chef Elmer who happens to be friendly as well. He always make sure that the food was great. Was quite impressed by the pork belly lechon and pork sisig. I came here for dinner with 2 friends on Saturday evening at 6PM, wanting to try some of their dishes on the menu. I've had their lunch buffet before which was $18, but I don't think that it was worth it for me since I usually can't eat that much at a time and you can't bring things back when picking the buffet selection. There was probably a 20 minute wait for an open table to clear up. This restaurant is always pretty busy which is probably a good sign! We ordered the chicken adobo, lechon kawali, and the sizzling pork sisig with egg. At first, we were told that they would have to check to see if they would be able to make the chicken adobo in the kitchen since it usually takes some time to make it. One of the employees offered us some chicharron from the buffet portion while we were eating and brought over 3 pieces for us which was thoughtful. Surprisingly, the chicken adobo was the first dish to come out, even though they said that it takes a longer time to cook the dish. I wasn't sure if any corners were cut when they were making the dish since we weren't filipino, but the dish was still pretty tastey. The sisig was delicious as well and loved the added texture with the fried egg on top. The sisig does have liver in it, but it doesn't have any overwhelming or stinky taste that liver usually has. The lechon kawali was on the spot! The pork skin was crunchy and the pork belly was tender and juicy. I find Filipino food to be more oily in general, so I wasn't surprised from the oil/fatty content from the sisig or lechon kawali. The service was pretty good, the employees came by around often to check up on us and to refill waters, although it did take a bit of time for someone to come by to initially take our order. We had a good amount of leftovers to bring back to eat for lunch the next day. I would definitely bring my friends to here if they are looking for some authentic Filipino food! read more

One time I ate so much at the Sunday lunch buffet, my center of gravity shifted, and I fell while washing my hands in their bathroom. If that's not a testimony to their food, I don't know what else is. I also quickly started to wish I was wearing my stretchy pants half through the first plate. The food is solid, the service is hella friendly, the place is well set up and the price point is excellent. It's a little loud but if you have Filipino friends, no surprise there. And for my badge of authenticity, my parents are Filipino, and my family took my dad here for Father's Day. He was happy and our mom didn't bother to tell us she could make this food better. They had salmon sinigang, chicharron, lumpia, pancit palabok, pork tocino, chicken longonisa, daing, pinakbet, chicken adobo, kare kare, diniguan, cassava cake, puto, lecheflan, fruit salad, and assorted fruit. This is quite possibly one of the most underrated restaurants in the entire DMV area. The pinnacle of a family owned restaurant and all the values one should encompass is definitely reflected twice over with Matthew's Grill. FOOD: The food is unbelievably good. I've been to their lunch buffet a few times and although it is a buffet and sometimes we associate that with lower quality food, this is definitely not the case with Matthew's Grill. They have classic Filipino dishes like lumpia, kare-kare, chicken adobo, pancit malabon, and dinuguan. These options might vary day to day, but are primarily the same. It's all very flavorful and 100% authentic (you can tell from all the Filipino patrons!). SERVICE: I can confidently say that the service raises the bar for countless restaurants. Jumbo (a host/waiter I believe?) is super friendly and always so welcoming! The owner/manager also comes around to all the tables asking how things are and remembers returning customers! The people here are extremely kind and makes everyone feel like family. I would definitely recommend this place for a group! The staff was very helpful and answered all of my questions while we planned a birthday boodle fight/kamayan dinner with 20 people. The staff was very friendly to everyone and the food was amazing! And so inexpensive! Amazing quality and tasty food, no menu to navigate, and because everyone paid a flat rate, paying the check was super easy. I also appreciate the staff working with us to accommodate two vegetarians in the group so they could sit with us, but eat separate dishes. I wish I had known they had halo halo so I could've saved room but I'll definitely try it when I return to check out their dinner or lunch buffet. Can't wait to visit again. read more

Matthew's Grill (MG) was a disappointment. We ate there on 3/01/22. We were 6 and spent $320 which we paid in cash. Normally cash-paying customer would be accorded a discount but when we asked for this, our request was smugly dismissed. So when it comes to customer service and reception, I would rate MG as 1 on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being the lowest. It was costly where food was poorly presented. Our food was served in flimsy styrofoam containers and we had to eat in shitty/unwieldy styrofoam plates and plastic utensils. NO decent restaurant in Montgomery County would have treated its customers this way considering the hefty price tag that was charged. Food was mediocre. Although I have been a frequent customer in the past, never again will I visit this place considering the below par treatment accorded to its customers which I find totally unacceptable. read more
