This place was formerly "Lumpia Pancit" because I would see it going down south on 270 and when I saw it changed to Mathew's Grill, my husband and I decided to check it out. This little restaurant is located in the Festival Shopping Center, nestled between Sun & Ski and the Lotte Plaza Market. We got to the place around 12:30pm on a Saturday, so it wasn't crowded. As soon as we walked in, they showed us to our table. Then they asked if we were going to do the sit down buffet (which is $18/pp), but because I wasn't sure what they were serving one of the servers said we could check out the food on the buffet line before making a decision. You also have the option to order a la carte. Today in the buffet they had: Lomi, Salmon Sinigang, Chicharon, Lumpiang Shanghai, Pork Tocino, Chicken Longanisa, Pancit Malabon, Diniguan, Kare-Kare. Being a Filipino American, I recognize pretty much everything in the menu so we opted for the buffet. It was a very good thing we came in with empty bellies because we stuffed our faces with lots of yummy food. For the drinks, I got the calamansi juice. I didn't know they were serving this drink since I checked the menu online before coming. There is a dessert at the end of the buffet line, but we ordered the Halo Halo a la carte. We got it to go since I was already so full I knew I wouldn't be able to finish the whole thing. In the back, there are individual restrooms for men and women. I don't recall there being a changing table in the women's restroom. This was definitely a great find for us because I personally haven't been to any Filipino restaurants in the DMV area other than 3 cafeteria-grocery store hybrids in Northern Virginia. We highly recommend this place and we will also be bringing our families next time. Side-note: it's pretty cold inside so I'd recommend wearing a sweater or something. I separate my review into three parts: Food, atmosphere, and service. My rating is averaged from the three categories based off a 1-10 scale. Food: 10/10. During my several visits to Matthew's grill I had the lumpia, fried pork belly, sizzling pork sisig, and pinakbet. All were amazing! The lumpia is addicting! Lumpia's are long and skinny spring rolls that are so easy to eat yet so flavorful. My friends ordered an order of lumpia's to go after our meal was done because they were so good. The fried pork belly is on point and very juicy. I had originally thought that it would be too hard or crunchy but I got quite the opposite. If you like some lemon/tangy zest and some crunch to your pork, the pork sisig is an amazing choice and pairs really well with rice and eggs. The pinakbet was good! The shrimp and vegetables taste great together but I personally would choose the sisig or fried pork belly over this dish the next time I go. Atmosphere: 8/10. The inside of the restaurant is very simple and clean. If you come at a busy time, you may have to wait a bit of time. Many people order their food for carryout/to go. Service: 9/10. We have always wanted to try Filipino food, so we decided to try Matthew's Grill. We tried the Sisig, Pancit, and Grilled Squid, and they were all delicious! The Sisig -- which is sizzling pork -- is nicely flavored with a soft and crispy texture and a hint of spice. The Pancit was well-seasoned; we got the mix, so we had a variety of meats along with the vegetables and noodles. The Grilled Squid had a sweet glaze and was stuffed with vegetables; the sweet and grilled taste was wonderful. For dessert, we tried the Halo-Halo, and it was fun to eat because of the different fruits and beans inside. It wasn't too sweet, and it was refreshing with the shaved ice, milk, and ice cream. Despite this, the owner let us order while we were waiting and helped us choose some delicious plates, like the sizzling pork sisig, crispy pata, and nanay's pancit. Of the a la carte menu, the pork sissig is the most popular and it deserves the spot because it spectacularly delicious. An outstanding, unique Filipino dish. Other dishes that I've tried were lechon, bistek and shrimp gamba which were tasty too but not unique. Of the buffett dishes, the BBQ ribs, lumpia egg rolls, the stir fried noodles were very good. There were some mediocre ones as well. The most well known Filipino dessert is halo halo which is absolutely delicious! I'm giving them 5 stars because they're very generous with their portions. The shrimp for the pancit canton are so chunky/big! The chicken in the pancit canton are shredded, and it practically makes up like 60-70% of the canton, I feel like. You won't be disappointed with the pancit canton because you'll definitely get your money's worth as far as the meat goes. Actually, there were a bunch of veggies in there too. The noodles are decent in thickness but my attention and taste buds were focused on the shrimp and chicken. Idk what they did with the chicken and shrimp but they taste so good and their textures seem velvety! Best pancit canton I've ever had at a restaurant. The halo-halo... Damn man. The ube icecream was chunky and didn't melt right away. The flan was chunky and firm. They gave me like a slab of it. I loved it because it gave the halo-halo more texture and flavors. I didn't care for the beans or jelly. Honestly, there weren't much in my halo-halo but I didn't care because the ube icecream and flan won me over, and they're my fave components of halo-halo anyway. They say first impressions are everything, and well... Matthew's Grill really didn't leave me a great one. One thing that might not be clear here is that you can either eat at their buffet or order a la carte from their menu. Be prepared though, according to the guy at the counter each item takes 30+ minutes to make. I tried both their lunch buffet & some things from the a la carte menu. I hate going against the grain, but I didn't really enjoy much of their offerings. I got their lechon kawali & the grilled stuffed squid. The lechon kawali was a nice, large portion but every piece was over cooked and dry. The stuffed grilled squid (Inihaw Na Pusit) was much better. It was marinated well, not rubbery, and had a very refreshing pico de gallo-like stuffing. The lineup for the lunch buffet was weak. The dishes that were put out were very similar to each other. I was expecting to see a lot more variety and less of the cheap filler-type dishes. I think the quality control needs to be improved. To name a few of the things I noticed: the lumpia on the line was stale & I saw a long, black hair in the white rice. Today was the day i finally was able to try Matthews grill! In town and my bf and i chose this place for lunch! As soon as you walked in you ran into employees zooming in and out of the kitchen prepping a catering meal that was ready to be picked up. Amazing team work and customer service. They managed to check on each table, take a walk in, a phone order all in the span of hair w few minutes. We ordered the Pata dish: 2 HUGE beef hocks just like that! The order was $30 and so worth it in size (just look at the pic)! We ordered two sides of rice: plain and garlic soy. We actually took advantage of the nice weather and ate on the back of the truck. The skin was so crispy and a bit chewy in a great way! The actual meat was insane so, tender and with that side sauce they provided.... You would've never guessed by the outside. This is the best Filipino restaurant in town! Aside from their authentically delicious food, the family that owns it is very friendly and offers great service. At Matthew's Grill, they offer you the choice to indulge in their buffet or order off the menu. I've only ever ordered off the menu so I cannot comment on their buffet but the food always looks fresh. There are 3 things here that you must try: Kare Kare: my favorite. I am Filipino and the Kare Kare here is the best I've ever had. It has so much flavor (you can smell the peanut sauce as soon as they set it down) and the meat is extremely tender. Sizzling Pork Sisig: comes on a hot plate with an egg. This dish was a perfect combination of savory, crunchy and flavorful and without being too fatty. Halo Halo: if you have room for dessert, order this. Although the shaved ice comes with a lot of things such as red bean, jack fruit, flan, ube ice cream, coconut milk, etc... it's the perfect level of sweetness. They also add real ube which is impressive because not all places do that. Everything was reasonably price and they give you really good portions. This place has taken over in the former Lumpia Pansit spot on Muddy branch next to the ski chalet. When they first opened, I loved this place. They brought sisig out for the buffet! Lots of tasty options with a good variety. Love, loved that they had more than just fruit for dessert - they have cassava cake and the green jelly dessert. With all that said, quality and options seem to have downgraded on my recent trips. This makes me oh, so sad. The vege option in the much more limited options (I'd say a quarter less) was labeled buttered vegetables. It was the frozen vege bag you get from the grocery store with butter mixed in- wth? The pansit was only okay and the fish was very fried milkfish - ok but had hoped for a decent pork option. I mean this is a Filipino place, right? The ribs were very saucy and tough. I felt more regret than full this time and quite disappointed! I plan to order off the menu next time instead of the buffet and I'm hoping for a better experience in food quality. read more

My experience: I was in town visiting family with my girlfriend. While driving up from VA to visit my grandmother in MD, my Filipina girlfriend found this place on Yelp and asked if we could go. I figured my 92-year-old grandmother would not be interested, so we decided to go after our visit. I was wrong. When my grandma asked if we wanted lunch, and I told her our plan, she asked to come with us. "I've never had Philippine food!," she said excitedly. We got there chose the buffet. "A nice young man" (as my grandma would describe him) asked if we wanted an introduction to the food. My grandma said yes, and he walked her down the entire buffet, putting a little bit of everything on her plate at her request (except the vegetables; she said she could eat those at home). Although she is a spunky 92 year old, she does not move very quickly, and she doesn't always hear well. This man was incredibly patient with her and took the time to make sure she knew what everything was. All three of us loved the food, finished our plates, and even went back for dessert (one of each, of course)! The service: The waiters and employees were kind, welcoming, and patient. The food: Was excellent. I love pancit, so I happily helped myself to a lot, but I enjoyed trying everything else too. The ambiance: It's a simple little place, which is fine with me. Not a lot of decor, and nothing fancy. The tables are a little close together, and seating is pretty limited. It seemed that the staff and patrons were understanding of this, and made room when you needed to get in and out. The value: A lunch buffet on the weekend was $18.00 per person. While this seemed a little high for a quick bite, it is totally worth it if you come hungry and have time to sit, eat, and enjoy. The food here was very good my concern was about overall management and operation. As I walked in I was greeted by a friendly person yet he stood in the platform dining area while a group was eating. I think the rice in the cooker was there too long and was just dried out I didn't want to dig through since I was only having a little. I was also just a bit grossed out about the water cup they keep the rice spoon in. A couple of the dishes had shrimp in them but in each item the shrimp was mushy and not very appealing. Finally it was quite a while for someone to clear my first plate from the appetizer visit to the buffet. In fact a girl finally cleared it while I was having my entree. When done I was unsure about waiting for a bill so I went to the counter in the back and had to gain the attention of the young man playing with his phone and eating (very noisily). This is more of a solid 3.5 stars for me, at least at the time being, and I'll explain why... don't worry... likely in excruciating detail. Wen't into Matthews Grill expecting there not to be a Dinner Buffet...surprise! there definitely was one. I was happy! Especially for a restaurant I'm trying out for the first time... I was happy that there was a buffet, cause that mean't I could get to try out a nice spectrum of their menu. Also Filipino food usually holds well on a hot bar because a lot of the food is saucy and stewed, so there are a lot of Filipino places that serve food from a hot bar type of set up and it doesn't compromise the freshness or integrity of the dish. So we decided to do a combination of some dishes off the menu, and we also did the buffet. Cause... we're glutinous. Also, I needed to try their Sig Sig that I've seen so many pictures of... and while I'm trying the Sig Sig; I should definitely try the Lechon Kawali... for good measure. I'm glad that we ordered the Sig Sig and the Lechon; cause they turned out to be two of my favorite dishes. Sig Sig: "Chopped deep fried pork belly mixed & chopped chicken liver & onions, served on a sizzling plate" *Matthews grill is different in the use of mainly pork belly for their Sig Sig. Usually sig sig utilizes all of the "extra" pieces of the pig that are not used in things like adobo or lechon. It was absolutely delicious. It was just wonderful. Came to the table sizzling like it should. Egg on top was a good call. It's well balanced, if anything, a bit heavier on the chicken liver than I'd love... but I wouldn't hesitate to order it again. Maybe next time with an extra lemon wedge. The Lechon Kawali: giant chunks of fried pork belly. Yes, you can mess this up. No, they did not. Fat could have used a LITTLE more rendering... but overall very delicious. And I really like the soy vinegar sauce it was served with. I've only had Lechon with that livery sauce that comes in a yellow bottle; and though that stuff is good, I really did enjoy the soy vinegar. Other favorites of the night for me were the Sinigang (Sour tamarind soup). Of course by the time we got to it all the pork ribs and greens were picked out, but the broth was absolutely crucial. Now to the disappointments; I was not a huge fan of the adobo or the bisteck that came off the buffet. Funny enough, they just didn't taste fresh to me. Also I thought the adobo was real agressive on the cracked black peppercorns. I did enjoy the pancit, but the other dishes on the buffet (asparagus etc.) were a bit lackluster. Also, the miniature lumpia were mostly crispy outer coating. One of my other favorites of the night was the Pandan dessert. If I wasn't so full by that point, I would have gone back for seconds, and likely thirds. So... my learning for my trip to Matthews Grill is ; Order off the menu. On a Friday lunch, they served the following: Chicken Lemongrass Soup reminiscent of (watered down) Bun Bo Hue Chicharron - Freshly fried pork skin!! Drool...I couldn't even be bothered to use their sauce. Straight to mouth, thank you very much. Pork Lumpia's aka small spring rolls! Chicken Adobe A fried fish Mixed Pansit A vegetable medley stir okra, potato, carrot and eggplant Baby back ribs Chicken red sauce with mixed vegatblse Pork Blood Stew - We didn't even know what this was, but this was by far my fav dish. Oh Matthew's.. my Filipino buddies love this place and they usually bring me with them. It's a very unassuming restaurant on the end at the back of Festival at Muddy Branch Shopping Center. I've only eaten off the buffet here. There's always a good variety of at least seven traditional main Filipino dishes like chicken adobo, Kare-Kare, Embutido and a small dessert table with fruit and cassava cake. The main dishes are different every time I've gone but they seem to always have chicken adobo. The food is fine....just. fine. Nothing has ever stood out to me. Everything is quite bland. I'm not sure if it's bland because they are trying to accommodate different tastes since it's a buffet or their food is just bland? When I'm in the mood for it I order the halo halo(not on the buffet). Their halo halo is an icy, creamy, fruity cup of goodness! Yum! I definitely recommend! I came here with two others and for $12, you have access to rice, soup, eight side dishes, fruit, and two different types of desserts. While not your traditional type of buffet that offers hundreds of options, the quality of the food was fantastic. I especially enjoyed the chicken curry, chicken soup, and the BBQ ribs. They also served some authentic Filipino fried dishes such as lumpia and crispy pata which were good as well. Dessert included an egg tart dish that I unfortunately was to full to try and a tapioca pudding which was amazing. I've been coming here with my family, well, mainly my son and I post-soccer games, for several years now and their food has been exceptionally good and CONSISTENT every time. I recently brought some close friends here, as well as my parents for Mother's Day, and not only were we treated like family, but the service, friendliness of staff, and quality of food was excellent. Due to the current pandemic, there is no buffet, but that didn't stop us from ordering a boat load of entrees. Go big or go home, right?! All of their food is delicious, but if I had to choose my favorite, it would be their sizzling pork sisig. I'd prefer it to be spicy, but that's why I save some leftovers and heat it up at home with added chilis My oldest absolutely loves their dinuguan, as do I, and it has the perfect amount of vinegar to mask any taste of pork blood for those who are nervous may be trying it for the first time. I have never eat here nor got the service from this place. However, I rate this place from my experience going to this restaurant. I came in at 5:20 PM, 40 Minutes before they close, I came in respectfully asking if the place still open or close to the waiter. The waiter told me that they're still open. A moment later the chef/ owner came telling me that they are closed and told me that I cannot eat here. If the place is close at 6PM, I expect them to close at 6. Discovered this spot earlier today after looking for healthier options after my appointment was over in Gaithersburg. It was going to take me over an hour to get back home due to an accident so I decided to partake in their buffet to grab dinner and burn a little time while traffic died down. This was a hidden gem! I normally stick to the things I know like pancit and lumpia (I know, so basic and boring) but today I tried some other items such as Menudo, Chicken Adobo, chicharon, Sinigang, and a dish called Sarciado. I wasn't a fan of the Sarciado due to the bitter melon and texture of the shrimp but I'm sure that's more to do w/me than the actual restaurant. Everyone was very friendly and guided me w/what was in each dish and how Filipinos like to eat it. I even tried the cassava cake and fruit salad! Both were yummy! I ended up eating way too much lumpia, chicken adobo, and menudo and even hours later Im still full and happy w/my experience there! I even ordered some chicken adobo to go to share w/my brother who has never had Filipino food before and he loved it! Dont be fooled if the place is not busy at certain times.
