Matthew's Grill offers a weekly lunch buffet for $12, with typical items you'd expect to see in a Filipino spread: sinigang, Shanghai lumpia, pinakbet, adobo, pancit, leche flan, and so on and so forth. The weekend buffet is so much better. They have kare kare, palabok, chicken affritada, dinuguan, ginataan, and more. Needless to say, I'd come and eat here even if the people were really mean to me because I love the food so much. But that's not the case! They're SO nice - it's like eating at my parents' friends' house. The only issue is that the space is kind of small so I feel compelled to make a reservation if I go on the weekend. Recently, I enjoyed a delicious buffet lunch at Matthews Grill.The restaurant was clean with minimal decorations. All the servers were friendly. The ginger chicken soup was good. It would have been much better, if the fat was skimmed off the top. Chicharron (pork rinds) were perfectly seasoned and crispy. Now for the main events. Most of all, I enjoyed the tangy BBQ beef ribs----so tender---the meat fell off of the bones. Chicken curry and chicken adabo were delicious. I returned for seconds. Having a variety of desserts is important to me, as they are the best part of any meal. I enjoyed the green gelatin with coconut milk, leche flan, and the cassava cake (not too sweet), and fresh fruit salad. I couldn't resist consuming the entire beautiful Halo-Halo dessert. They have a great buffet line .they usually have a soup , rice ,lumpia,for the entrees it's different every time I've gone . Maybe call in to see what they have on the line to see what they offer for that day (this goes for the desserts as well)They do have separate lunch and dinner prices and weekend prices . As diverse as MoCo is, we're sorely lacking in Filipino food options. I've lived here for 20 years and this was my first time trying Filipino food! The restaurant is quite bare with minimal decorations aside from a giant Matthew's Grill sign inside. Most authentic Asian places are similarly sparse with the decorations though. The buffet is set up on the left side of the restaurant with lots of tables for dining in. Staff is incredibly nice and you could tell this was really a family operation. The owners went around socializing with all of the patrons. There were people who came in to order takeout and were told that they could enjoy the soup and chicharrones from the buffet while they waited. The service here is really great. I've never had Filipino food before, so I have nothing to compare it to and can't confirm if it's authentic or not. If it's any indication though, I will tell you that there were a lot of Filipino aunties and uncles here. My favorites from the buffet were the chicharonnes, tocino pork and menudo. The chicharonnes were fried to perfection and the tocino, sweet cured pork, tastes kind of like Chinese pork jerky. My favorite desserts from the buffet were the cassava cake and ambrosia. It's a HUGE deal when I like a dessert because I was that weird kid that lied to my teachers and said I was allergic to chocolate to avoid having to eat classmates' bday treats. I normally really really don't like sweets, but the cassava cake wasn't very sweet at all. The ambrosia tasted like a mango lassi yogurt with fruit chunks inside. The leche flan was too sweet for me though. One con is that there aren't any English translations or descriptions of the items up at the buffet, so I didn't really know what I was eating and can't speak to them in more detail here. Also, there weren't very many veggie dishes, so it was a very heavy lunch. If you don't eat pork though, I would definitely not recommend doing the buffet as most of the dishes have some kind of pork in it. They do have other options on the menu though. I grew up in the Philippines, and I swear my Yaya made the best lumpia ever. Ever. The greatest thing about being friends with Filipinos is this: You say "I have had lumpia. I enjoy lumpia." Or if you have not had lumpia you say "What is this lumpia? I have not had it." 99.44% of the time the response will be their insistence that their wife, or mother (or mother-in-law, or sister, or or or) makes the best lumpia, and you must try them. Within a week they will hand you a HUGE freezer bag full of frozen lumpia, with instructions how to cook and serve. And they'll be awesome. Every single variant will be awesome, perfect, the definition of lumpia. They're all correct. I have tried and failed to get lumpia that good in a restaurant until Matthew's Grill opened. So I'm not picky, but I'm also not really going to try to eat a dish which involves a cow foot. To be totally honest, I'm at the buffet for three things: lumpia, pancit, and the dessert thing I love whose name i can never remember. But mostly lumpia. The everything else? My husband loves it. The place is packed. When you're at the buffet during a rush, you might have to wait for lumpia, they go quick. It's because they are good. When I am having family over, I often call in for a to-go order of 100 lumpia. This makes the whole fam-damily very happy. PS: If you are sharing a bowl lumpia sauce DON'T double dip. This place is awful. $12 per person for the smallest, most bland buffet I've ever been to. They had 7 things including white rice. 2 of the serving dishes just had closed signs on it, 3 dishes were empty and no one refilled anything the whole time I was there. The chicken and the pork tasted nearly identical and flavorless. Two fruits and a small cake were their idea of dessert. I have no idea how this place has as high of a rating as it does. Maybe their made to order menu is phenomenal but I'll never know because after paying $24 for 2 people with a 4% service charge for using a credit card I'm never going back. This place is incredible! The food is exceptional, and the atmosphere reminds one of eating at a big family gathering. The chef came out several times to check on our meal, and the staff and family members who help run things were attentive, kind, and welcoming. The owner and staff here clearly make every effort to make you feel comfortable and part of the family. In terms of the food, everything in the buffet was fantastic--the lumpia and chicharones, the chicken and pork prepared several ways, the sweet and sour fish, the oxtail in peanut sauce, the desserts and beyond. Everyone in our party was tempted to sample one of everything in the buffet, which we all agreed was well worth the indulgence. We also ordered from the menu: the vegetable-stuffed squid, the asparagus, and the sizzling pork sisig. Nice service but the a la carte dishes are overpriced for their quality and waited 30 mins for an appetizer that had to be served to go at the end (wings). I'm kind of disappointed in Matthews grill when I sat and ate the all the eat buffet. I've been a long time customer and they are great. I usually get carryout. I love the lechon that they offer. It's crunchy but the meat stays moist and delicious. The service is great. They are always friendly and welcoming. The issue I had was I paid full price for the buffet. They didn't have a lot of people the day I went and they didn't bring out the food the way they should have. I paid for all the options that come with the buffet and it isn't cheap either but instead of bringing out food they kept just a spoonful and yes I mean spoonful of certain things and just left others empty. There was like three spring rolls. We had to keep asking for more. They had about 20 things on the menu but only had about six available and the six that were out weren't even a full serving. I love this place but I was truly disappointed. I needed to order from the a la cart menu to supplement for the lack of food even after being charged full price for the buffet. The dining area is casual and unpretentious. This is the sort of place you would go to eat and chat. The simplicity of the place highlights only that TASTE is king here. They serve buffet and ala carte. I have tried both their weekday and weekend buffets and if you have to make a choice, go to the weekend buffet, where the menu is upgraded. The stars of the spread are the lechon belly and kare kare. I have had lechon belly at Kuya Ja's, I have to vote Matthew's Grill as better. They were melt in your mouth-a perfection. They offer sisig, grilled squid off menu. When I go back and I'll definitely go back I want to try their fried balut. Raymond, thank you for the amazing food! Top 3 sisig I've ever had, the perfect mixture of savory, crunch and creaminess. The lechon kawali was also perfect- crispy with a juicy finish. The Balut on a a sizzling plate was nice- never really had anything like this and it was a familiar dish with a twist. Service was top notch as well. Came here based on review and recommendation from our Filipino friend and turn out that we like them so far. There's pro and con about this place I'd like to say : Pro - is that their buffet style and food is totally different and taste different from other usual buffet I've been to! But the taste is different in a good way! I assume they're a small family owned which make the service really nice and very friendly! Mr. Jumbo asked if it's our first time here and first time experiment Filipino food? Then he walks us through the mini table and explain to us with all the food they have. We actually enjoy everything by far. Con - Their buffet style is very very few selection to choose from to call it a buffet compare to a regular buffet! They have very limit of food selection. And for they price is actually pretty high for 8 different dishes with 3 dessert, AGAIN compare to the usual buffet place that has almost 5 times of food selection to them! But maybe the cost of making is more than the usual buffet!?! I assume.... ANW we like them so far and very happy about everything, so that isn't a big of a deal for me. As long as the quality of their food and service is good then the price is later to think about! This is a place you go to if you want true homemade Filipino food with a family vibe. The staff there are prompt and knowledgeable about the dishes and welcome you as if you're one of their own. Their buffet option has everything I would crave but they also have an a la carte menu. Sisig should definitely be ordered with halo halo as the dessert. They really care about their customers that they gave me a free halo-halo when an entree came out a little longer than usual...which to be honest I didn't notice, it seemed like a regular wait time. They're very attentive and constantly make sure you have everything you need. Parking is not an issue at all, which is great. Came here over the weekend for their buffet. I can honestly say, I've never really been a fan of Filipino food but this surely has changed my opinion on that! Went during a weird time from where they were transitioning between lunch to dinner? The were closed I guess for that or because they had a massive order to make but they were more than happy to let us in and wait while they finished setting up the buffet. Oddly enough, for being the first ones there you'd think the food would be piping hot? But it wasn't. That was the only complaint to be honest. It was more of a room temp if anything. Staff was super friendly. Owners came over to talk to my boyfriend since he too is Filipino. Overall, happy with the food and staff. I stopped by on a Wednesday around 6pm. I didn't expect the hospitality going in. Last time I went here was a few years back and that was for catering to a party. This time, I walked in ready to explore the menu on my own for a dish as what I usually do at new restaurants. First thing I noticed was I was greeted immediately from a lady behind the register counter. She asked if I was picking up. I told them I wanted carry out. Then a guy (didn't get his name) stepped out and asked what I would like to eat for tonight. I told him what meats I preferred and he grabbed the menu. I have to say, he was completely on board with helping me find something I may like to eat. He even showed how some of the items looked from the buffet. He even gave me the option to add noodles. I eventually settled with a dish that had shrimp. He noticed I was looking at the wrong description and pointed towards the correct one so I could read the details. I asked for no green chili pepper. The guy told the chef right away and then offered me soup on the house! The soup was so delicious. It was lemongrass chicken soup with decent proportions of chicken inside. This was a nice bonus to their hospitality. The young lady working at register was also easy to talk to. I wanted to pay by card and she warned me of the 4% fee they have. The fee only bumped up the total price to around a dollar so that didn't bother me. I conversed with her a bit to understand the fee. I'm definitely coming back for the hospitality. :-) Edit: Forgot to add that the shrimp dish I ordered have a decent amount of jumbo shrimp in it! I am so happy with the dish. Not all asian restaurants put a decent amount of shrimp (much less jumbo!) in a dish that has shrimp as the main protein. There is a lot of sauce though. While I had an okay meal during the Saturday buffet, my s.o. unfortunately did not due to his severe, lethal allergies to dairy, eggs, and nuts. The staff assured us of which dishes he could partake from on the buffet line. But after half a plate in, my s.o. had to stop eating because his throat and ears were getting itchy. Had this been a nut allergy or had he kept eating, we would've had to have gone to the hospital. I hope the staff can figure out the source of the reaction and take into consideration and be cautious of cross contamination and other possibilities before risking someone's life. I don't like to make a scene at restaurants, demand comps, or be that "Karen" especially when it's a family-run operation. But I was upset that they didn't offer to at least reduce the price of his fee after we told them he had an allergic reaction. I felt bad for my s.o., so I paid the $18+ and tip for his part even though he had half a plate. It's a real shame since this is also our second time having Filipino food. Found this restaurant through one of the people I follow on Instagram & as a Filipina of course I had to check it out. I live in the Herndon/Reston area so this was about an hour drive from where I live and it was so worth the drive! When we got there (we went on a Saturday) they had a buffet going on with about 5 or 6 dishes with some rice & desserts. We started with an appetizer of Lumpia. Super nice and crispy on the outside. My boyfriend had the Kare Kare & the Salmon Sinigang while I had the Pork Sinigang. The Kare Kare had lots of flavor & the sinigang is exactly how my dad makes it at home. For dessert we had some Halo Halo to go & it was made perfectly. The staff here is super friendly & made my first visit very enjoyable. Can't wait to come here again sometime soon! read more

Kare-kare is one of my all time favorites and they did not disappoint - I was lucky to be the first for the new batch placed on the buffet! . We went on a Sunday for their lunch buffet. Everything that we ate was pretty good (chicharon, adobo, pansit, sinigang, lumpia, afritada, etc.). I'm happy that we found a good Filipino restaurant in the DMV area. Even my bf who does not usually enjoy Filipino food really liked this place esp their buko pandan and cassava cake. Both were not too sweet and just hit the spot for us! The service was awesome. This place is amazing. We live in ashburn and had to teive for 1 hour just to visit Matthews grill. It was worth the drive and we keep ordering back the pork bbq sticks and shanghai!! The halo halo and lecheflan is also worth it please try it. When i had my birthday this July we ordered a lot of pork bbqs and 2 tubs of lecheflan. They were so generous with the serving and made my birthday extra special. Please I recommend them. They are good people who make good food! read more

There aren't any Filipino restaurant in my area so we drove 40 mins just for this place! They didn't have the pork tips that we wanted from the picture. They did replace it with pork lechon (?)
