When Jason Kaplan stepped away from his management position at Gjelina Take Away it was only a matter of time before Maury's became reality, and since moving from Smorgasburg to Silver Lake his cozy new spot featuring "Bagels & Appetizing" has received nothing but praise from Angelinos. Quickly becoming a neighborhood staple just four months since opening on Bellevue Avenue, the daily brick and mortar just off US101 far more conducive to business than Saturdays inside Dinosaur Coffee and Sundays at the Hollywood Farmers Market, it is beginning at 7:00am that doors open to a stream of customers, everything from young hipsters to old couples from New York and a "dog whisperer" with several animals in-tow stopping by to get their Sunday morning fix. Not only about Bagels, but also offering housemade Cookies, local Halva plus Schmears, Loaves and Lox, it was following a brief wait that an order was placed, limited outdoor seating thankfully available and an unwrapped bag first finding two styles of Rugelach still warm but unfortunately quite tiny at $1 per piece. Saving additional sweets for later, approximately five minutes separating payment from delivery of two toasted Sesame Seed Bagels plus one simply sliced and dusted with Za'atar, those seeking Carbs with some tooth will find plenty to like about both "skin" and center, a hearty tug required to separate mouthfuls that comes generously topped with Cream Cheese for $1 or Butter at no additional charge. Next biting into Challah that maintains a springy crumb even when toasted, the advertised Plum Jam unannouncedly substituted by Strawberry, it was by way of savory Sesame that Maury's looked to reinvent Black & White Cookies with mixed results while a Poppy Chocolate Chip round was more or less faultless beneath flecks of Salt. read more

I was feeling insecure about a business meeting. My wife suggested that i bring bagels. I had never been to Maury's before but the server at the door selected for me up all that I needed to enter the field with confidence in a jiffy. This he did even though even though there was about full-capacity patrons on the veranda The vegetables he included were wonderful. He said " I Hope you enjoy them" with such authenticity that I felt I was carrying energy and love in my bagel bags. I got an assortment with all the fixings and utinsils, convniently packaged. Yessss! This is the best lox bagel I've had, ever in life. Every ingredient is fresh and made with precision and you can tell once you take the first bite. The bagels are amazing, soft and actually do not need to be toasted, which to me, says a lot. You pay for the high quality ingredients and I will definitely be back. Let me come right out of the gate here and say that it is so amazing that Maury's is so quickly establishing themselves as a go-to neighborhood bagel spot. I love the space, I love the vibe, I love the people, and the product has some serious potential; but it's the menu breadth that in my mind has some room for improvement. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? As I mentioned, you've got a really cute space here with just the friendliest of people behind the counter. There's clearly already a local following of regulars that are coming in strong, and this will no doubt help Maury's reputation grow. One small gripe is that I came in on a particularly cool morning and was surprised to find that there's no indoor seating - none. I get it, there's hardly the space for it, but even a very small table with two chairs might have gone a long way. Star. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? $3.50 got me a sizeable Everything Bagel with a sizeable amount of standard Cream Cheese, which was a good price point. Star. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? Okay. So let me just explain this here. I love bagels - love them, and admittedly it's been very difficult to find good New York style quality and/or diversity within what is a limited LA bagel scene. Maury's gets the bagel and cream cheese right, and I'm of the opinion that they should build off of that solid base into the very popular space of proper breakfast bagel sandwiches. Yes, loads of people love a good bagel with smoked fish of some sort in the mix, but folks like me would much rather have that same great bagel with egg, cheese, and maybe bacon or sausage in the mix. Those options aren't available at Maury's, so I almost felt cheated that what was a good Everything Bagel wasn't being used to its full potential. Single Star. Star 5: Would you be excited to go back? Until Maury's branches out a bit on the menu front, I simply can't get as excited as I do for say JJ's Sandwich Shop in DTLA. No Star. read more

First off, whether you've had a bagel from NYC or not, we're in LA, and these bagels are BOMB regardless! I expected Maury's to be pretty packed on a Saturday morning, but the line went by quickly. We ordered the lox on an everything bagel, and the kippered salmon on salt and pepper. We also ordered rugelachs and a black and white to go. The lox on everything was great, but the flavors of the kippered salmon were amazing. I especially enjoyed the cucumber and dill in the sandwich. The salt and pepper bagel was the perfect combo. It complemented the whole thing. The rugelachs were perfect, not too sweet, and almost crumbly which was amazing. I also enjoyed the black and white with the sesame seeds on top. Delivery app would only give me a tiny refund that really didn't make up for the lack of mail ingredients. I came after hearing about this place on Lincoln Lawyer. Slightly pricey for just a bagel but very tasty. I got the kippered salmon bagel and mmm GREAT flavor. Jason was very kind when helping me. I like the pick up window outside and the patio chairs. Service was very fast and efficient. GREAT bagels also, the cream cheese is tasty. Not sure if it's homemade but it gives those vibes. Let me first start by saying that I'm not a big fan of bagels in general. I rarely eat them. However every time I drive by Maury's I always see a crowd of people outside. It got me interested so I had to give it a shot. They have a variety of different types of bagels and sandwiches. I chose the classic lox sandwich on everything bagel. It was pretty tasty and I enjoyed it a lot. It's packed with loads of cream cheese. I really like that you can taste everything in the sandwich and nothing really overpowers the other. The lox had a slight saltiness that paired well with the cream cheese. The bagel was soft, had a good chew to it but not overly dense and chewy. It was very filling for me. I also had a Vanilla Iced Latte which was good. Overall, I quite enjoyed my meal and will be going back to try some other items on their menu. For a LA bagel, this place does a decent job. The bagel itself is a little bit on the smaller side. It lacks the density and chewiness of a NY bagel. The taste of the bagel itself is alright. I do have to say, I did enjoy the lox spread. There are large chunks of lox in the spread. It won't ever surpass a NY bagel, but for LA it'll do. Tip: Order a head of time to pick up. *Tori's Takeout Thoughts - Quarantine Edition* My quest for the best bagel in LA might end with Maury's. Their bagels have the most perfect chewy bounce to them of all the bagels I've tried so far (Hanks, Belle's, Yeastie Boys.) I haven't had an east coast/NY bagel, but I imagine this might be as close as I may get. I ordered online and got the Kippered Salmon Bagel Sandwich on an everything bagel as well as a 4 pack of onion bagels, 1/4 lb of eastern nova, scaillion schmear, and pickled onions so I could build my own bagel sandwiches at home. Compared to some of the other bagel sandwiches I've had, I did feel like Maury's was a bit smaller. I tried to savor every bite but it was so delicious that I felt like I nearly inhaled it. I appreciated how simple the sandwich was - no fuss, not super fancy and it didn't need to be, because the bagel speaks for it self. As sad as I was to finish my sandwich, I was so glad I ordered a pack of bagels to continue the party (though it took a lot of will power to not consume all the bagels in a single sitting.) By far the best bagel in LA. My husband and I are native east coasters (and he is from NYC!) and so we are very snobby about bagels. Every time we were in New York, we would bring back a dozen bagels from Tal or H&H and freeze them because no bagels in LA were acceptable or worth the carbs. Maury's, however, has changed the game. The bagel is revelatory - a perfect bagel the way they should be, chewy and not too big. I no longer need to import my bagels from NYC.
