I first had it at a cafe on Nob Hill, and had to pry the brand outta the owner there later by telephone. "What, you trying to open your own cafe?" he said. "No," I said. "I just want that coffee. It's the best I've ever had." After about two minutes of additional force, he gave it up: Coffee Magic Dark French. The company's online at www.coffeemagic.net. I've tried a bunch of the other coffees--Jet Fuel, Fog Lifter, Snob Hill--but the Dark French is the only dark, rich, roasty coffee that tastes as much like coffee as coffee ever could. So it's all I ever get. If you're into variety, though, get the Amex out. :P Ordering directly will cost you 30% more or so, plus shipping, and there's no point in doing so if you can buy it down the street. Dark French is so good I had to call a cafe owner to pry the name of the brand outta him, so I'm skeptical that anything from the Blue Bottle is gonna impress as much, but I'm gonna give it a shot some time soon. Besides chocolate and ice cream they also have coffees, hot chocolate and Italian sodas. The guy behind the counter was really nice and gave us a sample as well. This is also where Andytown roasts and packages all their beans. I saw some of this activity happening in a flurry behind the barista. I didn't know Andytown has a Northern Irish heritage but found out their in-house baked goods reflect that lineage. I ordered the $3.50 Chocolate Chip Cookie, and the prominent amount of salt was indicative of true Irish technique (Photo 10). Quite tasty and it went well with the refreshing $6.25 Iced Coffee made with their signature, chocolate-tinged Shore Leave Hook blend (Photo 9). Opened only from Thursday to Sunday, from 9 in the morning till noon, this is where anyone get their cacao fix! So glad to see Cru Chocolate gained Yelp recognition in a month or two. I was worried that it'll remain as a pop-up. There weren't many people who came to Cru Chocolate while Sohn continues to have a lot of customers who're crazy for Korean food. At least it never took long for me to have a nice shot cup of hot drinking cacao! I used to have pure hot drinking 73% Ecuadorian cacao made with just cacao and hot water from Christopher Elbow Chocolate. This time, I have a 100% Pure Drinking Cacao from Cru Chocolate! Anyone dare to step up to the challenge? Here in the heart of Dogpatch, there's still many places to see past the Chase Center building. I have yet to go to many places I haven't set foot in. Quite a tiny space to buy chocolate bars, at least I can fit right in to purchase one of them. Ranging from bite size to the regular chocolate bars, the highest percentage one can get is 65% Cacao. Despite the decent amount of flavonoids, one certain ingredient in each bars called "Erythritol" is sustainable enough to make up to a consumer such as myself. Not my favorite chocolatier, it was such a pleasant experience. I'm sure I'll be waiting for one magical cacao café to find its retail space throughout my hometown. If anyone likes chocolate bars that's 65% or lower, The Good Chocolate is right up your alley.
