I've gone back a couple more times and I guess I have to give it 4 stars now to average the reviews to 4.5 stars since there are some minor issues that prevent me from giving it the full five. After a couple more visits, the service is still excellent, the food is still prepared a bit lighter in sugar/salt than other restaurants, the prices are still good, and the portion sizes are still large. Here's some things that stood out: The soups here great. After visiting many other family restaurants in the area, I find that this is probably my favorite place to go for soups, especially when they have creamy soups. The beer battered scrod and shrimp creole here are delicious as well and provide a great reason to come here on Fridays. However, I did not like the texture or flavor of the macaroni and cheese at all. Regarding texture again, the broiled perch, meatloaf, roast sirloin of beef, and pot roast could've all used better texture although the flavors were pretty good. Maybe the meat is simply too lean to get an excellent texture without being higher in fat. The restaurant is great in potatoes, whether it's potato pancakes, fried, or mashed they're all good. The ice cream is good here too and for some people, if you add whipped cream on top you will be very pleased. The rice pudding is still in my opinion the best in the area. Extra cinnamon and cream make this a real delight. Still not a big fan of the cakes/pies but the cheesecake is quite nice. In summary, I still think it's a great restaurant with nice interior and great prices but texture on some of the dinner dishes could be improved a bit. read more

Wow...just shocked and extremely disappointed. Ordered the Belt Buster for take out (10oz chopped sirloin steak, melted cheese, bacon, lettuce, and tomato served on garlic bread). When I got home and we all opened our food, I couldn't believe what I saw. My Belt Buster was simply a hamburger patty with a slab of American cheese on soggy, disgusting garlic bread. Nothing else besides tomatoes (under the fries to make the fries soggy as well). I decided to call, as I've been coming here for years. The older gentleman (I believe the owner) answered. I told him what I received and he told me that is exactly what the Belt Buster is. I read him the menu description and he still argued with me. I didn't know chopped sirloin steak was just a hamburger patty?! He told me if I didn't like it, bring it back and I'll get my money back. No apology. Just extremely defensive. I went here this week for lunch with my work lunch crew. One member of the crew has been craving diner food and this was our closest option to work. There was no wait which was nice and service was typical diner style...Whadya want? Short and to the point direct which can be easily mistaken as rude. Know what you're getting into at a diner. The food was nothing to write home about. I had a ham and cheese sandwich which came with some fries and it was good, but not amazing. The bread was a bit burned. It was a good deal for $8 though. My friend had a beastly meal that came out on three separate plates and couldn't finish it all for $10. Good prices, decent food. I have been a loyal customer for many years but my recent experience is going to change that. I ordered a large soup to go and to my surprise when I got the bill it was $11.00. That same soup can be bought at Checkers in Schaumburg for $8.00. and I used to get it a Maxfields for that price. I know this as I got soup from Checkers 2 weeks ago. This all goes back to the start of spiraling prices several years ago. Cost increases from suppliers were past along which I can understand to a point. Eggs were $5 a dozen or more back then. But eggs are not even close to $5 a dozen now but the breakfast prices have NOT GONE DOWN which leads on to believe that someone is trying to line their pockets which appears to be most restaurants. The owners are quick to raise but fight any downward pressure even as costs have declined since the pandemic days. Too bad as they are sowing seeds of their doom as these current unjustified inflated prices are going to hurt them in the long run. I am All for making a reasonable fair profit but this appears to be a bit much. If we continue to pay these prices they will continue to charge them! In fairness the food has always been consistently good but cannot afford these prices anymore. read more

Stopped in for my Church's monthly men's meeting and lunch. I had the chicken fajita pita sandwich and being Friday , clam chowder soup. Large food portions, and the chicken pita was full of flavor with juicy chicken strips and grilled onions and peppers. Soup was not too thick nor too light and full of vegetables and clams. Well, not really a fan but my Mother-in-Law likes coming here. The 2 times I ate here I was disappointed. The first time over a year I had the Gyros something which looked and tasted like some pre-packaged stuff you get at the Jewel. Yesterday, I had the French Dip which again it tasted like something out of the jewel freezer section. Not good at all. Now my Mother-in-Law had breakfast which looked pretty good. French toast, bacon, sausage and eggs over. Maybe something I should have had but it was 3 in the afternoon....maybe next time. Maxfields is our go to breakfast place! We just ordered from there today and they have some good choices! The prices are really good for how much food you get! They have amazing pancakes and my favorite Florence Egg Benedict's are my go to! They do pick up and they're pretty quick, they told us our wait time was 10-15 minutes which was perfect because I'm always hangry in the morning. In my eternal struggle to find awesome breakfast places I have found me another keeper. Maxfield's is located inside a strip mall on the corner of Plum Grove & Schaumburg Rd. We wanted to get some nice breakfast on a gorgeous Sunday morning and we let Yelp decide. There were some larger groups waiting outside, but since there was only two of us we got seated right away. The menu is extensive if you figure in the lunch menu, but we were here early so it was breakfast only. I wanted to deviate from my usual omelet order so I got Pork Chop & Two Eggs, and the wife ordered an Athenian omelet. I decide to order some Cinnamon Apple Crepes since it sounded delish. Our server was very good as she kept our coffee cups filled and checked in on us frequently. The food came out pretty quick, which was good since I was famished. The Pork Chops were served still in the marinade, and they were so tender and tasty. The wife seemed to be enjoying her omelet so I let her be. I must say that the Cinnamon Apple Crepe was fantastic! The sweet cinnamon sugar glazed on top of the apples and crepes was great. I know we will be back here often, I even want to try out the lunch menu. We have now found another good breakfast alternative to the mundane Denny's and IHop in the area. read more

If we are out & about in the Schaumburg area & want breakfast, this is where we go. They have a nice variety of omelettes, skillets, pancakes and the like. Their lunch menu looks big as well, but we've never been here at lunch time. Our food always comes out fast and has always been delish! If you come during the normal Saturday or Sunday breakfast rush you will probably wait for a table. But the place is pretty big so the they normally turn things around quickly. I went here with two coworkers for lunch during an in service. I heard they had good soup and sandwiches. When I got there the soup if the day was chicken noodle. Meh. So I got a Greek omelet instead. The omelet did not seem fully cooked and it made for better left overs when I reheated it the next morning. The fruit that came with the inlet was pretty sparse. However, the potato pancakes which can be substituted for the regular pancakes were fantastic. I would go back for those alone. I love breakfast food so I was more than happy to check Maxfield's out when my friend suggested it for dinner. The food was decent but service was definitely lacking. I wasn't expecting 5 star service since it is a diner but what we received was pretty terrible. My friend and I came around 8pm on a Friday and it was pretty dead except for a couple tables. I had the Fritta skillet with a side of potato pancakes and my friend had the sausage and cheese omelette with a side of bacon pancakes. Both the omelettes and skillets come with a side of buttermilk pancakes, toast, or potato pancakes. Here are some of the pros and cons from dinner. CONS: 1) I ordered the potato pancakes with my skillet..the waiter came out with buttermilk pancakes 2) The waiter asked us if we wanted more water rather than just refilling our glasses 3) We had to wait a long time before our waiter came to check on us and get us our checks because he was busy cleaning the counters 4) When we asked for separate checks, he looked confused and said "oh..separate checks" and acted like most people don't ask for it PROS: 1) Food came out fast 2) Food was pretty good and portion sizes were fairly large for the price I wouldn't say this was a bad experience per se but it definitely didn't wow me. If I'm in the area I might try it again but otherwise it probably would be a pass for me. read more

Service was very quick, they clear a long line and a full restaurant pretty quickly. They originally said about a 15 minute wait (far better than Wildberry cafe's 45 min wait) and it really only took about 5. Very fast and friendly service, they don't hover or over pester you but they get the job done. The food was delicious; standard breakfast joint food, if not a little above standard. I had the pecan pancakes with whipped cream as a combo. The pancakes were a very nice consistency, fluffy and cakey with just a little crispness around the edges. They poached my eggs perfectly which is not always easy to achieve. The sausage links are nice and thick (no innuendo intended!) The orange juice tasted fresh squeezed, which was a nice surprise, only wish it was a bit larger, it comes in a glass the size of a Dixie cup. The only complaint I have is that the bacon was very tough, like chewing on cardboard. This is definitely a place I would return to when I'm in the area. read more

Dude... did that old lady just budge me in line? Yes, yes she did. Being 8 months pregnant and so hungry you could eat an old lady does NOT give you the right to yell at one for jumping you in line. It's a rule I try to live by. But... I was kinda annoyed. That being said, HOLY OLD FOLKS HOME, BATMAN... this place was full of the elderly at 11:00 on a Sunday morning. We were in the neighborhood doing some they-only-have-this-store-in-the-burbs shopping and I NEEDED breakfast, so the hubby found this place using the Yelp app on the iPhone and we ducked in because of all the good reviews. I found it to be... meh. I had a corned beef omelet with hash browns and pancakes. I've had better pancakes. I've had better hash browns. I have DEFINITELY had a better omelet (it was kinda gross and I didn't finish it). Our waitress was friendly enough and I'm sure everyone else eating there was local and goes there frequently. My husband and I have been going there for years. Overall, almost all of their food has been consistently good. The service is usually pretty decent, except sometimes when they get very busy, but still overall pretty good. We love their Sunday soups, which are cream of chicken and french onion. Both are delicious!!! I am very much a breakfast person. They have a large breakfast menu and the best part is that I can order it any time and not worry about what time of the day it is. Some recommendations that I would make is their fried chicken (takes a bit longer, but worth the wait!!), corn beef and swiss club, crepes, chicken caesar salad, split pea soup. This is a great family restaurant that can crave most taste buds and satisfy most ages. Don't forget to try their yummy desserts. They offer a good selection of cakes and ice creams. Overall, you get a good amount of food at a decent price with good service. What else can you ask for? read more

This review is about a carry-out order and not about an experience in the restaurant itself. My daughter and I were in the mood for a hot beef sandwich....you know...the kind with mashed potatoes and gravy served open face on bread...so she found this place. She works near Schaumburg so we ordered a carry out. Let me say that I understand that when you get a carry-out order, sometimes the food can go through a metamorphosis by the time you get it home...soggy french fries, etc...so I take that into account but other than it not being as hot as it would have been had we ordered it in the restaurant, nothing much should change with a hot beef sandwich. The sandwich comes with soup so we both got the chicken and rice. When she got home and I started to unpack our order, I saw they forgot one of the soups. Bummer but okay...not a disaster. They gave us rolls with the soup though but they were both stale. Hmmm... We heated up our dinner and it went downhill from there. The mashed potatoes were definitely instant with a thin, watery taste to them. The gravy was lackluster and, while it was thick enough, there wasn't much to taste there either. The roast beef was real roast beef though (sometimes you can get that pressed stuff) so that wasn't bad but it wasn't enough to save this meal. The whole thing was really disappointing. In conclusion, a dining in experience might have been different but it's the same food so I doubt it. Won't be ordering from this place again. read more

I liked this place. I came here for brunch with my dad a little before noon, and it looked pretty busy, but we were seated right away. My dad ordered one of the specials and got an entree along with bread, soup, and dessert - a great value. I wasn't wowed by the bread; it comes in a basket of assorted breads/croissants/muffins which are served cold, but I think that's how most Greek restaurants serve their bread, at least from my experience. For my meal, I got an omelette which came with pancakes and hash browns. I added fresh strawberries for a dollar. Nothing spectacular but I was happy with my meal. Our server wasn't super friendly or enthusiastic, but she did a fine job checking up on our table, so I didn't have any complaints about the service. Our brunch turned out to be less than $30 and the portions were huge (we ate leftovers for days after), so overall I was pretty satisfied. Slammed on the breaks on this place. I was running a good track until we came across this place. Things were ok at first. We were in a good mood and cracking jokes. Then: We were served chicken breasts which we were later told they were in fact precooked. These were dry, tough, and overcooked. Who knows how long ago these were precooked. Our vegies were cold. Pasta and soups were at best luke warm. Our server insisted the ordered chicken breasts were grilled but it was obvious they were pan fried. When they rewarmed and strained the pasta, they didn't bother to drain the water properly. So they slapped the pasta on the plate with it's water and then threw sauce on top. I regret not taking a photo of it. They did offer to pick up our tab and take home our deserts, which I thought was considerate. I still insisted to pay and least 1/2. The food is tasty and it is nice to be able to enjoy a large breakfast on the weekend without having to prepare it all myself. Only small gripe is that that we ordered a side of sausage patties that wasn't in the order when we got home. The woman that took the order on the phone read it back to me, so I know the order was received, but I couldn't tell on the receipt if we were charged for it because it wasn't itemized.
