The set up is classic Hong Kong restaurant/cafe with the kitchen & roast meats area up front, friendly uncles & an auntie working. Most staff are at least dual language Cantonese & English, maybe some Mandarin. It's noodles for lunch & rice (course meals) for dinner, but I wasn't feeling well. I needed something comforting. The OG Standard Cantonese order is $8 Wonton Noodle Soup - I chose the "Dumpling version" over wonton (ie. Wontons & vermicelli egg noodles in a chicken-based broth). Think chicken soup, matzo soup - not your overly salted, saucy American-style flavors. Cantonese food values the freshest & simple flavors of the real ingredients. Was happily surprised that their version was SUPER fresh! The dumplings were a nice small - medium size, plump & juicy. Cross section reveals perfectly portioned shrimp, pork, shitake mushroom, & scallion (nice twist!). I mean, the chef is wrapping them right in front of you up front. The vermicelli noodles were a bit softer than al dente & the best test was bringing at home and dividing the noodles into two bowls. They sectioned off easily & didn't become a weird mass on the 40 minute commute home. The other surprising part of the soup was the broth! I wouldn't say Cantonese wonton soup broths are deep or memorable but this broth surprised me. It had more flavor and like a light medium depth than others I've had. Right before I went to pay for my order, a grandpa quickly came in and picked up a pint of "the chicken broth." The chef seemed to know him and joked about his "special order "and a different type of name for it. TRUST the grandpas! You can add some chili oil, dash of white pepper, or worst case scenario a dash of soy sauce to the soup, but encourage you not to ruin the purity of the ingredients! Maybe I'll bring my family here the next time they're in town, I have high hopes for the rest of their Cantonese dishes. Note: The staff was very homey & kind. Auntie upfront noticed that I needed to go to the bathroom & relayed it to the staff. It's a small restaurant & the staff replied to her with which customer was using the bathroom, & one other that was waiting next, and then me. It might be distracting, but also slightly charming; because the staff talks across the restaurant to each other. It's the Southern Chinese informal way - feeling at home.

I ordered the beef brisket noodle soup with white noodles to be mild spicy so there's some chili oil floating around in the plastic bowl. Comes with few pieces of bok choy over the noodles. Took a sip of the broth and thought it's flavorful yet a bit too salty for me. The noodles are decently good, I don't know if I'm being picky or not but they are kinda soft in texture and don't taste as bouncy as the one from another noodle shop that I often go. Perhaps others would like and won't mind softer in texture noodles. As for the beef brisket, I don't see too many pieces so only like 4-5 smaller bits. I guess the amount is reasonable for $11. Should've ordered the beef noodle soup instead, maybe that one would've more pieces of beef. Hmm I see coming here is like a one-time thing for me. I love this narrow, old school, and yes, slightly dingy, little shop on Grand Street for all of the above reasons -- but also because staff are sincerely kind and friendly to customers of all backgrounds. (I overheard one in the middle of a smile-filled language exchange with a Spanish-speaking co-worker.) Unlike some places, there aren't covert second looks for African American friends I've brought by. There are a number of places selling similar products as Kong Kee. (There's another soy bean product specialist a block away, w/ a side trade in cheung fun, as well, like Kong Kee -- but the staff there are dour even to regulars.) Given that Kong Kee is of even quality with, or of higher quality than, other soy product specialists I know of in Chinatown, the lovely staff at Kong Kee easily tip the scales. Kong Kee has become our go-to. Two products to try here if you're not familiar: - Soy Milk / Dou Jiang -- It's completely different from what brands like Silk market as soy milk at Whole Foods. Dou jiang has a nuttier, more complex scent. My 10-year old likes Kong Kee's dou jiang the best since it's mild in scent and flavor, and not overly thick. (I know this is a stylistic preference. Some Buddhist temples are famous for selling very, very thick and concentrated dou jiang.) You can purchase it plain, or with sugar or salt added. - Douhua / tofu custard -- Think silken tofu. Then think double the silkiness. Think freshly made nutty aroma, still warm in winter (or chilled in summer). I think most folks eat it as a dessert with sugar syrup poured over and it is delightful that way. But I prefer to take mine home and drizzle it chilled with soy sauce, toasted sesame oil, chives, and cilantro. It's the most perfect summer dish I know.

This took about 10 minutes as the orders prior to mine were on the larger side, which was all good. When I stepped backed to the counter, I saw the staff member at the register take the display box and pack it into a bag for me. I was unsure how long it had been sitting out so I asked if I could have a new one instead of the display. At this point I think she was kinda embarrassed/surprised that I asked and replied quickly that it wasn't out long and it's the same as the other chilled ones, though said ok to swapping it out with one from the fridge. That interaction just felt a little awkward. Anyways I got home and ate the noodles and it wasn't as good as some other places, the noodles were a bit thicker, less slippery--maybe from sitting boxed in the fridge, and the spicy sauce wasn't quite as flavorful as a couple other restaurants/food stalls I usually go to. The portions are plentiful, and I must say I really liked the taste of both dishes (especially the fried rice). That could be simply because of how starved I was. If healthy food is what you're seeking, then look away. The chicken drumsticks were greasier than we are used to + the crab had the same texture as imitation crab. It isn't all that cheap either. A few negatives, but the end of the day, I thought the food was decent, the service was good, and we left, relatively satisfied.

In Taiwanese cuisine, a braised pork belly over rice and a Lu Roa Fan are two completely different things, so that was quite the disappointment. Moreover, the rice itself was also overcooked, to the point where it was almost mushy. The pan fried buns had a crispy bottom, but the filling was quite dry. The pork chop was nicely flavored, but a tad thin and dry. Well, at least now we know....

I wasn't a huge fan of the thick rice noodles though, the texture was a little too chewy for me. Best thing was the calamansi lemonade! It was really sweet, could've possibly had more lemonade but I still enjoyed it. Since upper Manhattan is quite a trek from Queens, I was super delighted to see that they'd joined the Sunnyside Eats ghost kitchen roster and sought them out for takeout (takeout and delivery are the only options here) on a cold winter night perfect for a warming laksa. My thesis: the Manhattan location is better than this ghost kitchen, but it's a solid option from the choices available at Sunnyside Eats. I love Singaporean food and much of the cuisine of Southeast Asia, and the Native Noodles founder is a Singaporean expat herself; what I enjoy most about Singaporean food is the blend and balance of flavors that reflect the melange of the country itself. I ordered some of my old favorites: the chili crab buns ($9 with extra buns: split the buns open to scoop up the crab dip for real delight!), the laksa ($14.50, soup version, with chicken and the addition of a soft boiled egg), and a side of kang kung ($4), my favorite Southeast Asian water spinach. Overall, I think there is a quality differential between the food here and the Manhattan location; the mantou (buns) were a bit overfried and oilier than I expected, and the flavors didn't quick pack the same sparkling oomph overall. I was disappointed by the kang kung, which is definitely the blandest version I've ever had of this dish and seemed to have barely any flavoring (I had expected a funky, shrimpy belacan sauce like I usually encounter at Malaysian/Indonesian restaurants). I did like the new soupy, brothy version of the laksa as previously only a drier version had been on the menu, and I found this a pretty generous portion though not as flavorful as I'd previously experienced. Still, you'd be hard pressed to find another Singaporean restaurant with these classics in Queens, and the food is still pretty solid. I can't speak to the service as one doesn't encounter any of the individual restaurants' staff at pickup, but my food came out very quickly and well-packaged!
