Not good at all. Food has zero flavor. Over priced for the what you get. Heart broke because I love Cajun food & gumbo.

Let me begin by saying I enjoyed the poboys I have had here. So my first dining experience was great. However my second visit, when it comes to the gumbo, pepper is a decent seasoning, but a terrible entree. I bought both the seafood and the chicken and sausage gumbo and they should both be advertised as "Pepper with Gumbo and Rice". There was so much black pepper that it masked the flavor of the roux. I have never had any food other than peppered beef jerky that had this much pepper on it. I really hope this was a one off, but I won't find out because I will never order it again. I ordered a to-go order later in the day so maybe someone wasn't stirring properly and I got what had settled to the bottom, but it was really awful. I don't think the picture does it justice to how much was dumped in the bowl. read more

Super cute, our waitress was so pleasant but the food was NOT great. For it to be a gumbo house, the gumbo lacked flavor and seafood.

The gumbo was horrible. Taste like they just added some roux to the pot, boiled it for a few minutes and served it. No flavor.

Ok, been wanting to try this place since it opened. 'Glad we finally got a chance to stop by. We went on a Sunday afternoon and it wasn't that crowded to our surprise. We were immediately greeted by a server and were able to choose our preferred seat. We ordered lots of appetizers: boudin balls and the crawfish egg rolls. The boudin balls were the highlight of the meal! They were outstanding; however, the egg rolls weren't all that good. They were mostly wrapping with not much filling. The filling that was inside didn't taste good. It was kinda sour like perhaps the sauce was white wine based. Among the four of us, we ordered the chicken fried alligator, the stuffed red fish, the pasta, and the crawfish étouffée. It was all sort of just ok. The stuffed fish was huge but oddly the fish itself wasn't seasoned well while the stuffing was overly salted. I also tried the seafood gumbo which is a huge NO lol! It was like a gravy with a few shrimp added. It didn't taste anything like gumbo to me. Because everything was just ok, I think I would actually give them another try and order something else... or just get the boudin balls! read more

DO NOT! And I mean DO NOT try the gumbo here! Its basically unseasoned thick gravy with bits and pieces of frozen "seafood" in it. They should be ashamed to sell that to people. My mom says the shrimp was ok. None of what I purchased looked appetizing and after a spoon and a half of that gumbo I refused to eat anything else. You can't call yourself a gumbo house when the gumbo is the worst thing on the menu. read more

They had the worst gumbo I've ever had, and when we sent it back, the server said that we were the third person in a row to send it back. It's in a really nice location, but was not good at all. The appetizers were okay, but you can tell that they just took premade food and fried it. I really wanted to like this place, but hated it instead. I have no idea how they have the rating they do. After the birth of our new family member we were very hungry and decided to stop at this place on our way home. My hubby said a few people recommended for us to try it out. I try not to rate places until after I visit a few times but that makes my reviews few and far between so I'll update my review when I return. First, the people are very nice. Kat was our server. She was very hospitable, knowledgeable, patient and cute. For an appetizer we had the Boudan balls. My son had a crawfish and shrimp poboy, I had the Cajun pasta & the hubs had the seafood platter with extra shrimp instead of oysters. Everything was unique to Maxine's. Maxine's is destined to be a long time staple in Manor. I guarantee right here. I have eaten there several times and if you like Creole cooking, this is the place for you. With a chef from NOLA and his wife running front of the house they have a smooth system. I have eaten the blacked chicken and veggies, the bread pudding, the crawfish etouffe, gumbo, hush puppies, and several other dishes over the few visits I've been able to make. Not once has a single person in my party been disappointed. Pro: Try the bread pudding. You will not be sorry. Try anything else too, but damn that pudding. It's a cozy small atmosphere with really nice staff. Con: There isn't one coming to mind. read more

Good overall, but not great. Went for an early dinner, and hit the restaurant during Happy Hour. We were lucky enough to get in during the lull between lunch and dinner, and had the place to ourselves. Service was friendly, quick, and pleasantly personal. With an Abita Turbo Dog in hand, we were off to a great start. Started with the chicken sausage Gumbo. Very greasy with lots of rice, but found only one small piece of chicken (think Chunky Soup size), and a couple sausage slices. Surprisingly bland. Wouldn't order it again. Moved on to the seafood Gumbo, which I thought was much better. Nice variety and amount of seafood with a much better taste. I would have actually preferred more rice in this one, but not a deal breaker. I'd order this again. Had the stuffed redfish with sauce for an entree. The fish was tasty and nicely cooked. As far as I could tell, it wasn't actually "stuffed" though. There was stuffing on the fish, and the fish and stuffing were covered with a yummy cream sauce...all served on a bed of rice. It was a very nice combination of flavors, although I do have to say that the stuffing by itself tasted like Stove Top. Not a big complaint...it worked. My SH had the Muffaletta, and really enjoyed it. Good quality meats, and quite delicious, although it did seem a little light on the olive dressing. Still, it deserved a Thumbs up! For dessert, we had their "World Famous" bread pudding. It was okay, but nowhere near as good as other versions we've tried. I'd recommend trying something else. Maxine's is worth a trip...just be sure to go in with realistic expectations. read more

Fried seafood and bread are DELICIOUS Gumbo and jambalaya vary from shift to shift. Parking lot is a disaster. Chairs are awful. Staff is nice food is good. Owner has placed a set of concrete bars right in the flow for no reason. Guess he assumes everyone is coming in from 290. So from the rear you have 290 Cafe (same owner?) with a MASSIVE chuck hole that even in dry weather has a small lake in it that no one has ever cared to fix. So if you pull in there, then WATCH OUT! No warnings, paint or signs, you WILL hit that concrete speed bump and scrape up your car. Once you are inside, I hope you have a tiny ass because the metal chairs are going to be kicking you out the whole stay if you don't. read more

We have been to Maxine's several times and have been pleased with our meals for the most part. Last nite my husband and I went there and we both ordered the seafood gumbo. His came looking like a very thick stew and mine came looking like clear broth with some shrimp, and partially cooked ocra, and celery in it. When I asked why they looked so different we were told that the cook said my husband's was the old batch and mine was the new batch. Mine didn't even qualify as a gumbo. At 9.50 for a cup I found this disturbing. The rest of our meal wasn't up to par either. My husband said the dirty rice tasted "soapy". Our waitress however was very sweet and this fiasco wasn't her fault and that is why I gave the 2 stars. We will not likely go back, which is sad because we used to like this place. read more

We were seated immediately on a Saturday evening by our server, Jennifer. She recommended dishes that were authentic and a stable to their restaurant. The boudin balls were to die for! We spotted this place on our way from Round Rock to New Orleans a couple of weeks ago and decided to try it out when we came back. First off, the service is great. We started with the poutine which, while unlike any poutine I had tried before, was fine. The fries were great. My husband had the oyster poboy which was, again, fine. I ate red beans and rice several times in NOLA and it's one of my favorites. The red red beans and rice here were nothing like what I had there. My daughter had the chicken and sausage gumbo and the gravy of both dishes tasted exactly the same. My daughter said it tasted like pepper water. Finally got a chance to head to Manor tonight to try out this new spot and it did not disappoint! The boudin balls and redfish were amazing and the gumbo and jumbalaya were fresh and authentic. Make sure you also try the bread pudding. Service was fast and our waitress was a sweetheart. The owners have put their heart and soul into this place and it shows. Let me preface this by saying that I went to New Orleans for the first time in December and I fell in love with a cajun pasta. I started craving it every day and all of a sudden, I saw Maxine's pop up! The owners have really turned this place around from what it used to be. Anyways, my husband and I decided to try Maxine's and our first experience was lovely! I had the Bayou Pasta (it was delicious), my husband had the Redfish, and then we shared the Boudin Balls and the Bread Pudding. We have already been back two more times - once we went *just* for the bread pudding - it's THAT good. And I've never been a fan of bread pudding! We live on Parmer, just about 5 minutes from Maxine's. We have a shortage of restaurants in this area, so I am so pleased that a new one had settled in that we really enjoy. SO good! I was able to try out a bunch of the menu items today, and boy-oh-boy, was my belly happy. Portion sizes for everything are really generous, so come with leftovers in mind (or better yet, bring friends/family and share everything so you can try more goodies!). I started out sampling the boudin balls (MUST have) and totally forgot that they even came with dipping sauce because they were so scrumptious, straight from the kitchen. I also tried the Cajun egg rolls, which were also very enjoyable, with fun crunch and creamy filling - but if you had to pick just one appetizer, the boudin balls are the way to go. The gumbo was just how I like it: rich and flavorful, with that gooey okra and big chunks of chicken and sausage. The bowl was big enough to make a full meal, so if you're a dainty eater, you might do fine with just a cup of gumbo. (Or do like me and save yourself some leftovers to look forward to, for a later meal!) I also had a side of red beans and rice. I don't even like beans, but I loved these - I thought they were perfectly seasoned, and were served hot and fresh to my table. Perfection! Finally... the entrees. It was a really hard choice between the crawfish etouffee and the redfish, but the redfish won out for me. I'm a sucker for a good, flaky fish, and the rice + all the other elements together made this such a perfect dish for me. (Plus it also comes with some crawfish on top, so it really had it all!) The only time I regretted everything else I'd already eaten was when the redfish came out... because I no longer had room to gobble it down the way my eyes wanted to. I'm going to reiterate this once again: Portion sizes are SUPER generous, while prices are so low in correlation to food quantity that my Austin-adjusted standard of living kept checking to see who I was robbing. This spot is still brand-new, and the owner told me they're still ramping up, trying to hire new staff, etc. So for the time being, only dinner is served here but lunch should open up in a few weeks/sometime very early in 2019, I believe. I'll definitely be back. I have never before regretted NOT living in Manor. I'm still not moving from downtown Austin, but the next time I have to head out to the Travis County Expo Center, you betcha I'm going to go the extra couple of miles to nab me some Maxine's. read more

I called abt their catfish baskets. The lady said, "our pieces aren't little. They are bigger than everyone else's" . Y'all these little fish nuggets were literally smaller than McD's chicken nuggets. I paid for 5. I took them back inside because of the size and price. The lady was like oh, it's supposed to be bigger than that. I allowed her to add more. NEVER AGAIN!!! No flavor! Nothing! Always! Listen to your 1st mind! Came back again!!!! This time got the regular size of shrimp po-boy and it was satisfyingly good! Had to have my poutine fries with it and let's say my taste buds broke out dancing and I saw sparks fly. This is my second visit and taking some chocolate cake and bread pudding home. Such a great little hidden treasure! This place is very small, cute and quaint. Very clean and the service was great! The food was so yummy! The crawfish etouffee is amazing!! My wife was really excited when a new orleans style place opened up in Manor. So we tried out Maxine's on New Years Eve and we immediately fell in love. Our waitress recommended the Boudin Balls which were terrific. My wife ordered the trio which consisted of a small portion of gumbo, jambalaya, and red beans / rice. Her remark was that she will absolutely return for the gumbo and the jambalaya, however she felt the red beans and rice were a bit plain. I ordered the roast beef and shrimp po' boy and the taste was absolutely marvelous. The shrimp was seasoned and cooked to absolute perfection. The bread they use is light and falls apart with the sauce and meat from the sandwich, so I had to improvise and use utensils, but it was worth it. We also had a bread pudding for dessert. My wife is a bread pudding aficionado and she very much enjoyed it. Our service was friendly and attentive. We have already decided to go back tonight! read more
