Here is an update. It's a little over 3 years later. They have definitely become my goto breakfast spot. Still not perfect but a heck of a lot better 3 years ago. Great sandwiches (though a little on the expensive side ~$10 for just a turkey club on two slices of bread with nothing, not even a bag of chips). Breakfast is good. I love their French Toast which I think they give too much (but I'm not complaining). Bacon is typically good and so are the home fries. I still wish the eggs were scrambled up instead of folded but they are cooked better. Definitely an improvement. read more

Recently ate food from here through a work event...I was not impressed at all and there seemed to be a lot of communication problems with the person we ordered from. Max's is a great place to run out for a quick, tasty sammich. My particular favorites are the meatball or pulled pork. They've got a great assortment of food and it all seems to be prepared on-site. The staff is fast and attentive. The decor is nothing great... but it is a deli and I usually bring it back to my desk or the park to eat. I highly recommend Max's for a mid-day bite. My company ordered platter of sandwiches recently. I wish they hadn't gone here. Basic, Stop&Shop deli platters with basic meats and cheeses and basic condiments and basic breads...really, I don't know about their regular lunch menu, but if this catering job is any indication of what they serve, I'd rather hit Viga. Went here for lunch on recommendation of office manager today. Their "New York" big-boys or whatever they call them, HA!!! If you made someone a sandwich like that in NYC you'd be crucified. Great breakfast. For $5 you get eggs, toast and home fries. The best breakfast deal in downtown Boston. Most places will charge you the same amount for much less. The eggs are always perfectly cooked. With nice big pieces of whole grain toast, but of course they have other types too. As for lunch, I have tried their sandwiches and they are good. Their sandwiches are bland. That's really all I have to say. I just had an egg-salad sandwich with BACON from this place. I love egg salad and I love bacon, so you'd think this would be a no-brainer but you'd be WRONG! If my eyes were blindfolded, I would not be able to tell you what this thing tastes like in a million years. Utterly bland. It looked nice and the bacon was crisp - how on EARTH is this thing tasting like nothing!? Needs salt. And everything else, apparently. The cookies from here are pretty good. I'm just generally disappointed in the quality of their sandwiches most of the time! --- * Update - 15 months later * I just had an egg salad sandwich from this place and it's better than before. This time, it was an egg salad wrap. The egg salad now has little bits of green pepper in it, along with a touch more salt. It's not bad. Never eaten the food here, just have gone in to get their fresh fruit plate in the refrigerated case. It's expensive at $4.50, but you get a generous amount of honey dew and cantaloupe. There are also a few strawberry slices, pineapple chunks and grapes. Some of the staff can be rude sometimes. Many times when I am waiting in line to pay, someone will walk/bump into me and not even say "excuse me, " or "i'm sorry." Good pastrami sandwich here. Hot on a bulkie roll with swiss and a little mustard, wrapped in butcher paper and secured with an old-fashioned piece of tape. The meat is lean, spicy, thinly sliced and fantastically seasoned. Pulled pork sandwich is just okay - pastrami is the thing to get. They don't have dill pickles, though, and if you ask you'll get some pickle slices that they use to put on sandwiches. Unkempt interior encourages takeout. read more

Visited Boston for first time. Max's was very close to my hotel. After one bad breakfast at Hotel, someone told us about Max's. Great place for breakfast if in the financial district. People come and go and tables open up quickly. Not much atmosphere, but food was good and reasonable. The owner sits right where everyone eats and does his work. He was very nice as were his employees. You order at the counter and they bring your meal to the table. Ate their a few mornings and food was fresh and tasty. read more

I got the turkey dinner. It was pretty good. The mashed potato were real. The corn was canned. The gravy was tasty. Stove top stuffing, but it tasted good. it was $10, not cheap though. I opted to eat in the restaurant. It was HOTTER than Hades in there. The owner and everyone else was sitting around sweating. The Frozen Yogurt is awesome - it is low-fat and you can add as many mix in's as you'd like for 50c each. You might be thinking - psht, whatever I can add candy to my own frozen yogurt.. but you're wrong, you can't do it like they do! They have a special machine that mixes things into the soft-serve hardcore and then they top off your icecream with some more topping (like Reese's!) on top. This place is a good stop for a pretty big Reese's softserve for only $3.50! If you are a health nut - no worries - they've got you covered with fruit options for your mix-in! A million times yes for Max's! For $8.50, I'm eating the best chef's salad around. Max's has never sold me short, with single salad lunches for myself or big orders (8+) for my sales team. They just ask that you fax over the order first (which I don't trust fax machines, so that's a little strange), but so easy and delicious! read more

I've never had a bad meal here. My go-to's are the pulled bbq pork in a wrap with cheese and coleslaw. Yum. Lately, I've also been going for the grilled cheese which is one of the best I've ever had. Just finished my sandwich from here. An Italian, with everything but onion. It was good. Everything tasted fresh. I could hear the lettuce cracked when the worker ripped it. The meat tasted very high quality and I was in and out in no time at all. My only concern was that the sandwich cost 8.50 including tax and it was not that big. I come here pretty often for lunch. The menu is very hit-and-miss, but the good stuff is very solid. Best order here is the fish and chips.

If I could afford it, I would eat here for lunch every day. When my office needs catering - we go with Max's. We fax over complex orders, they call us to confirm they received it, and they never mess it up. Delivery is on the dot. The garden salad with tuna salad is my go-to choice. The salad is pre-made with very leafy greens (note they have other salad offerings) thus it's very quick to grab. The tuna salad is tastes fresh and they don't overdoit with the mayo. The clam chowder and gumbo are to die for. All these run around $8. If you're looking for something a little cheaper, the grilled cheese is delicious at about $5. For desert, their molasses cookie is the way to go. I only suggest you steer clear of the french fries and curry. Reality of the matter is that like many deli's in the area, it gets insanely busy during lunch time. So, I just go either around 11am or closer to 2pm. Not a big deal. Although a lot of lunch places downtown close around 4pm - Max's stays open til about 6pm. The only downside is that sometimes they charge me different prices for the same thing. One day one cashier will charge me $7.95, another will charge $8.50. It's bizarre and the only reason I've stopped going as often. In summary - simple. Delicious deli fare. read more

Stumbled upon Max's Deli around 10:30pm on a Friday night, when most places in the area have long been closed. The staff was extremely friendly and attentive, making it feel as though you were sitting in your mom's kitchen, not in a deli in a rather deserted neighborhood at night. Although the full menu wasn't available, the late night menu still had plenty of options, and was reasonably priced for the portion size. The food was prepared fresh, and tasted much better than what you would expect at a deli that is focused on handling the college-aged crowd as they leave the local bars in the area. I plan on going back soon for lunch to try other items on the menu! read more

This review is in regards to their catering services. So my boss asks me to have lunch for 25 people delivered at noon. It is 10:45am. Most catering places rarely do same day orders, and if they do they require at least two hours. Max's delivered the entire order on time, (ten minutes early actually). I even had a last minute addition of a cookie tray, that they remember to include. Thanks Max's, you saved me from deally with an angry boss on a Friday afternoon. This is as close to a New York deli food as you are going to get in Boston. The Big Boy Reuben and the pastrami sandwich are two of my favorites. The service is quick and the prices are reasonable for the amount of food you get. If you go here for lunch, be prepared to be in a food coma by 2 PM. read more

This place is horrible. Just paid over $10 for a pastrami sandwich that was mediocre at best. It was also VERY small. I was expecting a huge sandwich that you would get ... weirdly enough, at any deli down the street. The owner was yelling at someone in the back which was unsettling as well. Ordered food for 6 people for a meeting, sandwiches, not difficult. Needed in 30 minutes. Michael, who says he is the owner, assured us it would be delivered. After one hour a woman, Melissa, who also says she is the owner, answered said the food was in route and downstairs in the building for delivery. That was not true. 105 minutes later, no food, Michael doesnt know where the driver is, claims he keeps calling him, and continually has been hanging up on the person asking. Seems as if they put the food in a cab and sent it-ok, thats a new one. The food was delivered in 107 minutes from calling in a rush order for six sandwiches. In 25 years of business, never have I experienced the unprofessionalism and run around of this establishment. The food was blah after all of this. read more

The first time I went to Max's Deli, a woman came over to me to ask how everything was. I told her that everything was delicious. The first meal I tried was the Italian-style Meatloaf, which was outstanding. The woman suggested that I try the Chicken Marbella the next time. I know I'm probably butchering the name of the special, but the chicken was so juicy and so very tasty. I was hooked. I was later introduced to the woman and I found out her name is Melissa; and she asked me for my email address so she can send me a coupon which I could use daily through till the end of June. As I eat whatever is on special, Melissa sits at the table with her laptop to be near the customers, which I think is so very cool. I already feel so comfortable there. Little by little, I'm getting introduced to the various employees who work there. I've met AJ, Michael and most recently one of the cooks. I really like the way they treat the customers. They go above and beyond to make you feel comfortable. Also, their Thanksgiving dinner is off the hook. It's one of my favorites. It's so delicious. And the Supreme chicken dinner is out of this world! Not to mention the burritos which are to die for! This is what comfort food should be. I also don't want to forget their breakfast special which I just love: three eggs, bacon, home fries, toast and the most amazing coffee. It's called the Fogbuster's! I'm sorry Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks, but their coffee puts yours to shame. I've talked about Max's Deli so often that my husband, Dan, is dying for me to take him there.
