Very disappointed based on their reputation...the waitress was great as well as the service...ordered drinks..my uncle asked for basil Hayden bourbon..we then were told they were out of it...I saw full bottle on shelf and questioned this..we were told they had more in storage..but then told they were out and full bottle was for display...I found this odd as every bottle was half full or close to empty on shelf but this one..I let it go as it would upset my uncle...ordered mussles which were very gritty and 5-6 were not even cooked....sauce used was very good....again let it go not to upset my uncle who does not like confrontation ...food was good...would I return not sure based on the flaws..mostly having the drink we went d but wouldn't open because it was on "display". Another disappointing dinner! After hearing my family RAVE about the Prime Rib at the prestigious Max's Tavern, I was anxious to try it . . . And was let down !! The family members who told me about their experience at Max's were not happy either. You would think a place with the reputation Max's Tavern enjoys would be choosier about the products the good they serve. Food 5 out of 10, had a steak and I could definitely cook a better one at home, pricey for the quality of the food. So I go in with my boyfriend to celebrate my birthday and they put us in the business room, bright lights and everyone talking about work, extremely awkward and nothing romantic about it. I don't usually feel profiled (I'm Puertorican") anywhere I go but this time I did. I ordered a coconut mojito and it was disgusting! Used to love going to Max's when I lived out here. Came out here to visit with my parents who were in town and ordered the Tuna Tacos and the pork chop. Pork chop was good but the Tuna Tacos gave my dad and me bad food poisoning, so much so that I had to get a hotel room because I couldn't make the drive back to Boston. read more

Gone downhill since changing chef(s). Have given it a few random tries over the past few months. Favorite kale salad is half it's size. Yummy creamed spinach yummy no more. Not sure what changed in the recipe but something sure did. Avocado toast was guacamole on a piece of bread and way too heavy on the red onion. Even the bread basket stinks. Raw bar shrimp are small overcooked rubber balls certainly not justifying its per shrimp cost. Manager offered oysters to make amends - which we don't eat so I guess that was our 1 and done offering. Nothing taken off the check, an offer of dessert, glass of wine. I gave it a star bc my hanger steak was delicious and cooked near perfect. We have been to this restaurant multiple times, and it has always been a positive experience. This past time, the restaurant was busy and all of the regular tables were booked. We were seated in the bar area, which was my first time sitting in the bar area. Eric, our waiter, made our dining experience exceptional. The food was delicious. I recently visited this restaurant to have dinner with my family as my son graduated from college that day. I made a reservation well in advance, and when I arrived, my table was not ready. When we were seated, we waited an hour and forty-five minutes, and still had not received our food. This is the most inconsistent restaurant I have ever been to. My waitress seemed overwhelmed, and the staff was unprepared. I am not the kind of person who leaves bad feedback, but this was a horrible experience. Save your money and go somewhere else ! Really insulted no one called to apologize. Completely ruined my sons evening. Sorry Max staff, but you guys really blew it on this one. Will never go back again. read more

Disappointed. My wife and I used to love it here. Still enjoy the atmosphere. But they have dropped the ball on our last three visits regarding the food. Apps were good, salads were good, deserts were good, service was good. But my $38.00 bone in rib eye was barely edible. This should have been a treat but is was terrible. It was difficult to cut it with a steak knife. I had a hard time chewing it. It seemed to be cooked to the correct temp but was a terrible quality cut of beef. I give up on Maxes Tavern. Ordered the Ribeye, and got a Prime Rib. Sent it back (and you know never to do that). Manager came over and said "the Chef said 4 minutes", then our Waiter came by and said "3 minutes". Guess what 9 minutes it came out, every one at my table had finished. I said I don't want it. We are done. She comes with the Bill and guess what, they wanted to charge me the $43.00 for the Ribeye I never got. Was that a mistake? I don't think so. My review only covers today, Mother's Day 2019. Had an 11:30 reservation and did not get our food until 1:20 pm. Waitress was apologetic but management was defensive. Didn't seem to think a one hour and 45 minute wait for pancakes and French toast was too long. She said they were "busy " today. She stopped back at our table a second time and said we would get our food soon, again unapologetic. Still defensive. When meals finally arrived, one serving of pancakes was twice as large as the other and bacon was practically raw. Our waitress seemed appalled by the situation. My daughter who had made the arrangements, was so upset she could not eat. Management showed up again and finally acknowledged they were at fault and comped our meal. Too little too late. Had the great pleasure of having dinner with a friend here April 13 2018 and having Brian L as our server. Brian knows his wines and made great recommendations. He also was very attentive, listened to our likes before making suggestions from the menu. The pistachio crusted haddock was excellent. Wedge salad cold and delicious. Brian L and server trainee extraordinaire Serena brought a card signed by the staff along with a delicious chocolate dessert with a candle to celebrate my friends birthday. I thought I picked one of the best steakhouses in town for our first date night after the baby was born. I was wrong. Let's start with the service - The only good part was that we were out the door in less than an hour which gave us time to get some ice cream from next door and catch a movie. Apart from that, The waiter looked less than interested in serving us or making sure that we enjoyed our meal. He didn't even ask if the steak was cooked to my liking. He never brought the bread out. Did not ask if I needed sugar with my iced tea and did not even bring it out. I finally spotted him at the end of my meal and was short of raising my hand or screaming "excuse me" to get his attention when we finally made eye contact. That is when I got sugar for my tea. Our appetizer plates were not cleared when our main course was brought out. They actually sat on our table along with the serving platter until the end of our meal. We pretty much did not see our server from the minute he put the food down till I flagged him for sugar. We still tipped him 20% giving him the benefit of doubt that he may be having a bad night. Now the food - there was no bread so can't comment on that. We ordered calamari for appetizer. It was decent. I ordered an Oscar filet mignon. The steak itself was cooked ok. However, the mashed potato was cold and runny. The asparagus was soggy and limp. And I could hardly taste the crab cake. Bernaise sauce was not anything to write home about either. I could have just ordered the steak without the extra stuff and been happier with a cheaper meal. (The mashed potato would have still thrown me off though). My husband ordered the half roasted chicken. Again the chicken itself was awesome. However, everything else on the plate (including the sauce) was cold and a disappointment. At this point, I just figured that I would not be wowed by the dessert either so we decided to hop over to Cold Stone next door which actually made my night. read more

I have been here a couple dozen times. The food is always delicious. I always get there crab cakes. YUM. I have also attended several private events here and the food was always superb. I would have given five stars but at one of the private events the service was not good. Every other time everything was great. Maybe they were short staffed that night. read more

My first visit to max's tavern was this past Easter Sunday. I took my family for brunch and I was surprised! I knew Max's had a reputation of being a nice place to dine, but they went above and beyond for the holiday. There was a candy table for the kids, (they even encouraged us adults) AND a bloody mary table. Our waitress, Stephanie was really pleasant and helpful with suggestions. We all got eggs benedict and the bloody mary was really good. Food took a bit long, but I guess that's to be expected in a packed house! Good overall experience, and we'll definitely be back. read more

I must say that I was a bit disappointed. I have long adored Max-a-Mia's in Avon, CT as well as the Trumbull Kitchen and Max's Oysters. This place is a few notches below as it related to the quality provided in conjuction with value. We found the entrees a bit pricey given the portions.....definitely taking advantage if the tourist destination. I'll stick with some of faves from this restaurant group. You may end up rating this place higher if you haven't visited some of the other locations. Granted it was graduation weekend, but an 1.5 hour wait seemed a bit much, so we ate at the bar - first come first serve. read more

Went in for Mother's Day brunch with a group of 9, we were seated immediately with a reservation. The food was delicious and the waitstaff very friendly and personable. The Bloody Mary bar left something to be desired, and we waited a while for the check at the end but I guess that's to be expected on Mother's Day. Tired of companies hiding behind Covid for the lousy meals. Been along time customer and have been disappointed for the second time in the past 2 years. Order the signature dish of the filet of Oscar which ended up being a crab cake on the side with a filet next to it with over cooked asparagus flooded with bread crumbs. Also asked for mashed potatoes and cream of broccoli. Ordered a ribeye with sautéed beanies mushrooms. Worst meal ever! Filet of Oscar is a beautifully done filet with crab meat on top with a gorgeous bernaise sauce and cooked to perfection asparagus. None of this happened. Stop hiding behind Covid this is a signature dish and was pathetic. I have eaten this same dish for over 10 years and don't mind paying the money for it. Not today. They decided to charge us as a filet and a crab cake appetizer separately. They think if you have a couple of drinks you're not paying attention far from it. Waste including the not Ribeye that served which was clearly a sirloin. Again stop hiding behind Covid and don't put waitresses through hell for it it's not fair to them. read more

The food quality ranges from decent to solid. With there being a small selection of decent restaurants in the western mass area, Max's Tavern is always a good choice. If this was in a major metropolitan area, however, I don't think I'd give it four stars--it'd just be a close to average restaurant. This place has a pretty large wine list and an American menu with all the traditional staples: steak, shellfish, raw bar items, pasta. Nice, relaxed decor and a small outdoor patio. I went to Max Tavern with my husband, our two friends, and they're daughter on Sunday night. It was nice and quiet at around 5:00 p.m. The food was good as usual, but the bread did take a bit long to come out, and our waiter was not very attentive for such a slow night. I had the shrimp pasta, which I would highly recommend. Max restaurants almost never disappoint, and this is no exception. read more

Busy Friday night dinner out with an old friend. Food--my ribeye steak was slightly over-salted but melted in the mouth. Shared mussels/chorizo and the tuna taco apps--both were fantastic. Wine list was OK. Proximity to the NOISY bar made conversation tough--and after 32 years if friendship, we talk a LOT!! Waiter (Derek) was attentive but couldn't BS about a bottle of Crozes Hermitage. (If you don't know, say so!) Would definitely go back for another meal--food was well worth it! read more

Outstanding Happy Hour! Thursdays are dollar oyster night and it is totally worth going. The Friday Fish Taco specials are very good. I have gone here more frequently for raw food than the steaks and cooked food and I have never been disappointed. The beer selection is average with rotating seasonal specialties on draft Waitstaff is attentive and accommodating. The prices are a little high. Like most other establishments in the Hall of Fame, it can get crowded quick. The crowd is generally older and not rambunctious, but it can be tough to get a seat at the bar later in the evening. read more

My wife and I have been going to Max's Tavern for years, and until recently, we have enjoyed it. The food was good, and the service attentive. However, yesterday, we sat at the bar and had dinner, and were not happy. First, it was very loud. While I understand that it was a Thursday evening, we chose to go to a decent restaurant, not a sports bar. Secondly, while our appetizers arrived in a decent time, our meal (we shared the hangar steak) didn't arrive until 30 minutes after we had finished our appetizers. The bartender gave us each a glass of port as an apology for the meal taking so long, but that was when we got dessert: good intervention, but badly timed. Lastly, we shared the creme brulee for dessert. It was delicious; however, once we finished it, I saw a long hair at the bottom. The manager and bartender were extremely apologetic, but only took the dessert and a drink off the bill. Had he taken care of the entire meal, we would return. As it is, it will be some time before we do. read more

Solid restaurant. Not awesome food but predictable and good. Rich dark wood and dark red leatherette seating. Good for business dinners but it lacks a power table. For the area, they think they are the best, and although no compliment, probably are. If a new exciting spot is packed, I'd go here as a great back-up. read more

In town for a horse show and unable to get a resie at Lattitude in West Springfield, I reluctantly went to Max's for dinner after reading the reviews on Yelp. Needed a reservation around 6 pm on a Saturday and they only had 5:15 available so I took it. I arrived a bit earlier than the rest of my party so I took the seat at the bar and ordered a glass of wine. Max's has a pretty good list of wines by the glass. The bartender (didn't get her name, never do) was friendly, prompt and efficient. There were groups of guys at the bar, all of whom seemed to be regulars, all enjoying light banter with the bartender. So far so good. My party arrived about 15 minutes late but we were seated right away. The dining room was virtually empty...so why only the 5:15 available resie on Open Table?!? Despite others experiences, our waitress was friendly, knew her specials, was able to answer our questions and waited on us expertly. Overall, I would give them an A for service. On to the food: I split the mushroom and garlic flatbread. Wasn't my thing. The garlic paste under the cheese was just too much for me. It overpowered the whole thing. I had the scallops with risotto for my entree. The risotto is green as the puree some of the peas and add it to the risotto. I think the risotto would;ve tasted better without the pea puree. The scallops were tasty. One of my companions had the 12 oz steak au poivre and I had a bite...it was delicious. The steak was tender and flavorful and the au poivre was not overpowering. I dashed out without dessert to make my class in the show, but my companions ordered and enjoyed some sort of mudslide like martini drinks for dessert. The decor is generic steakhouse: red booths, dark wood. It seemed a bit dirty but maybe that was because there had clearly been a large party in the tables next to our booth (I suspect they get a lot of traffic from the Basketball Hall of Fame next door). Overall it was better than expected. I would go back. I mean, there really aren't that many options in downtown Springfield, are there? read more

Nice local spot for the dinner to impress. Excellent service, interesting and creative martini menu, extensive wine list. The staff is eager to please but, the smiles wear down as the evening progresses; early is best. The waitstaff know the menu and you can trust their recommendations, as the creative menu can seem overly complicated. The basic items are delicious. read more

Went here the other night with a friend for drinks and appetizers. It was a good experience, everything was delicious. They have a very creative martini list, and a wide selection of wine. We ordered the spinach artichoke dip and the chips it came with were very good. They were some type of unique home made pita chip. I ordered a flat bread and my friend ordered a salad. The flat brad that night was a pesto garlic flat bread and was super tasty. I want to go back for dinner someday. I would say make sure you make a reservation for dinner on a weekend. read more
