Looking for a place to eat around 9pm on a Tuesday in Redding is a bit of a task. We thought about going to this other pizza joint but when we pulled up it was dead so I found this place and the reviews looked pretty good. This place is located right in the heart of the little downtown area Redding. It was located right off of the Main Street and front row street parking was easy to find so I was a fan from the moment we parked. The place was decorated with some really cool art and they seemed to have a pretty nice selection on tap. They even had black butte porter, my favorite! So apparently on Tuesdays they have a deal where if you buy any drink, even a coke, you get half off burger. The burgers were $10 and up. We decided to get a pizza since that was on our mind from earlier. The pizzas were a little steep in price but ended up to be pretty good. We ordered half chipotle chicken half garlic chicken. The chipotle one had a nice kick to it but wasn't too spicy. The garlic one was pretty good, not enough chicken but tasted good. I thought it was a little bland but my co worker loved it. Their red sauce made it all better. If you like dipping your pizza in sauce try their red sauce, it has a nice little spice to it. The place was dirty when we walked in and the bathrooms were unstocked but let's get to the real reason for the 1 star. We were Really never greeted, no biggie but when i finally find someone i ask if we can just take a seat anywhere, she states yes. We proceed to the back room full of tables and are told to not sit back there and pointed to a table in the middle of the room. i ask if we can just sit at the bar and she says no problem. We proceed to sit at the 2 barstools at the end of the bar where there was money left from the last customer along with their dirty glass. Again no big deal. On the bar is 3 flip books of drinks. We start looking through them to see what we may want. As of yet still no real acknowledgement of our arrival. All of a sudden the male bartender tells us to not be looking through those books. I let him know they were sitting on the bar counter and thought they were menus to then be told that where I was sitting was not even a seat and I shouldn't be there. Like what? So freaking rude. I am astonished at the customer service these days. Apparently those were secret drink menus that apparently he left where he shouldn't but instead admonishes us for it. Love it- One of the few watering holes in Redding that really has any pull for me. Been here a number of times and it will continue to at the top of my list. First off, it's a local joint that's got character. I hate strip mall type places that are all show and glow. This place has a fun spirit and is still lively. Synopsis: Okay but nothing to write home about. There are far more interesting place to dine in the downtown area. Full Review: The atmosphere at Maxwell's is that of a sports bar complete with blaring T.V.s and fellow patrons shouting to be heard over them. We went in for lunch so what I presume to be the dining room was closed off. Seating in the bar consists of tall tables with bar stools and one (thankfully unoccupied) booth. The menu offers some interesting options. I had the BBQ chicken sandwich with side salad and hubby went for the teriyaki pineapple burger with fries. Both were ok..but just ok. There was nothing special about it. Nothing that would make this a fight traffic, find the elusive parking space, endure deafening sports commentary because this is the best damn burger in town kind of place. Pasta salad tasted like it had nail polish in it. Probably stayed in the fridge too long or something. It was nasty!! I will eat almost anything fresh and that was atrocious. We all got spicy things and never was offered additional refills even with empty cups sitting there. The wait staff cared about the bar ONLY. We are in the Redding area visiting family. We found Maxwell's on Yelp! and chose to eat here based on the 4 star rating. As soon as we walked thru the door we notice how clean and well organized the entire place is. We were greeted by the young lady behind the bar serving another customer almost immediately. We sat as instructed and she greeted us at our table shortly after. This young ladies customer skills are well over my expectations for a lone employee working all parts of the dining and bar area. She was friendly, patient, helpful and very polite. I ordered and wrap and some taster tots. Food was perfect. Taster tots nice and crunchy. Wrap was, well... wrapped. Not rolled and thrown on a plate to fall apart when picked up by the customer. It was so good! I really like this place and we plan to make it a point to stop in every time we are up visiting. Make no mistake about it - this is not a restaurant, it is a bar. Not that it's bad... but the yelp site makes it appear as if it is a hipster restaurant, and that is simply not the case. Perhaps locals have a different opinion of the differences, I come from a culinary mecca, so I am very clear. The burgers were acceptable, but s l o w coming. There was not a crowd at lunch time, but basic burgers took about 25 minutes, so that is not a good sign. The bar maid was also the server (Remember? It's a bar not a restaurant), so even getting sodas and eating utensils was a struggle. It was overpriced for bar food, bar service, and bar seating (standing table with bar stools pushed up) as well. Hopefully, this new downtown pizza and burger joint will be okay in the long run, but I was disappointed with the opening. I don't know why you'd go to the press and hype the opening of a new brewpub in downtown Redding, and then open with a bunch of kegs -- but no house-brewed beer to be seen, and no sign of any in the near future. That said, the selection of draft beers is pretty good. Not Alehouse Pub-good, but better than average. Our pizza was respectable, but didn't really send me. The burgers ordered by the folks at the end of the bar looked better, but I'll have to reserve judgment on them for another day. The menu is -- let's call it "focused." Pizza, burgers, salad, hot wings. Those are your choices. Also, it looks like it's going to take MDE some time to develop a personality. The old Downtown Eatery had plenty of personality when it opened -- it was like an arty urban hipster who eventually developed a substance abuse problem and then went all to hell almost overnight. Right now, MDE is the pizza place you'd take your Mom if you think Ultimate Pizza might be way too weird for her. Maxwells is the place to go if you're craving for chicken wings. I would highly recommend the lemon flavor chicken wings. The lemon flavor added such a great taste to the chicken. I love my food with a dash of sourness and this was the perfect kind of sour. The deep fried jalapeno was almost like chips, but with real jalapeno. The flavor was great and I loved the texture. It was crunchy, yet soft, and easy to eat. The interior looks amazing. I love the artsy vibe that this place gives me. The designs on the walls in the second room look fantastic. A group of us used to hit Maxwells up once a week after work. The waitresses were friendly and took good care of our table. Since they opened a Maxwells on the east side of town, the downtown Maxwells has done nothing but go downhill in terms of service. With the boss man Cameron gone a lot now, the place has been left to a group of cranky females who close early on a whim and treat customers like a nuisance. Sorry but the last few times we have been there the waitresses have been rude and have closed the kitchen as early as 0830. If your open until a certain time stay open until that time. R.I.P., Downtown Eatery. You were amazing. When Maxwell's came in, I was slightly dubious that they could satisfy me the same way. And, well, they didn't. But they satisfy me in other ways, so we can still be friends. I have eaten a lot of menu items here, since it's a regular bar stop during the summer and sometimes we just want to eat something cheap-ish and greasy. The 1/2 price burger Tuesdays assists in this crucial mission. Burgers also includes chicken sandwiches and the veggie burger, so little ol' me can participate too. But I have to say, I ordered the veggie burger when they first opened and was not impressed. I found it bland and the texture was too chewy and mealy. They may have changed the recipe by now, but I am always too afraid to try again. The Buffalo Chicken Sandwich is tasty, and not too spicy on the way in, but if you have a sensitive stomach I would steer clear. Let's just say it had me running through the Promenade at breakneck speeds and leave it at that. The garlic fries are really good, and are always hot and oily, fried to perfection. I have heard mixed reviews about the pizza, but I think the Veggie Pizza is pretty damn amazing. Good dough, nicely spiced sauce, good veggies. The chicken pasta salad was ordered by my best friend once, and I ate some - pretty damn good. My only complaint is that the house side salad has some weird antipasto thing going on, and I dislike that very much. But the real shining star here is the warm beer brownie. Did you hear me? I said WARM BEER BROWNIE. A huge slab of warm gooey fudgy goodness made with beer, topped with 2 scoops of raspberry sherbet for an insanely low $5. It's HUGE, and decadent, and can be shared comfortably with 2 or 3 other people. DO IT. Seriously, you won't regret it. But don't call me when those jeans won't button. As for drinks, they have a great ever-rotating selection of interesting and unusual beers on tap, and a rice-based spirit called Soju that they make amazing drinks with. One of the bartenders made me an amazing concoction with it, the name escapes me now, but I want to say it was something sexually tinged. And aptly so, since my mouth got a little frisky upon first sip. Once the mirror behind the taps had a scribbled notice that they offered root beer floats, so of course we requested one with real beer instead of root beer. The friendly (often adorable) bartenders happily complied, and that was an experience I suggest you all try. Get something dark and a little sweet (Guinness or Raspberry Brown, if available) and reach a whole new happy high. And if you like live music, they have it often! My wife and were stay in Redding on a 2 night stop over on our trip back home from Palm Springs. We went on a sight seeing walk around down town then spotted the sign in the window " Pizza wings & Craft Beer" . Well they had me at "Craft Beer". Well they had an excellent selection of beer local/regional, the staff an patrons had very good knowledge of the beer. Maxwell's I love this place. The Maxwell Burger is the most exotic best tasting hamburger I ever ate. The Maxwell Burger has on it Cheddar cheese, Bacon, Fried Jalapeños, Peanut Butter and a big gigantic onion ring. I was a bit skeptical about eating a hamburger with peanut butter on it but after I did I was hooked. The fried jalapeño and peanut butter combo is my favorite part of the burger.
