I just realized I have not reviewed Mayflower Restaurant even though I've been dining here since they opened 20+ years ago. I feel that the quality has dipped a little since the early years but the food is still pretty good. I've attended a handful of wedding banquets held at Mayflower as they can partition off rooms and sections. For dim sum, they serve all the standard items like egg tarts, shrimp har gow, pork sui mai, chicken feet, bbq pork buns, etc. The items come out fresh and directly from the kitchen rather than the old school dim sum push carts. I've been here for dinner several times the last year. Their prices are on the higher side compared to some of the neighboring restaurants. Quality wise, it's a solid 3 stars. The restaurant does feel a bit aged and the tables are pretty close to each other. Service is good, they refilled our tea several times without us asking. Parking can be a bit tough at lunch on the weekends due to the all the other restaurants and shops at this plaza. All in all, it's still a decent place for dim sum or for dinner. read more

They really need to change their policy on withholding our order until two of our guests arrived. They've seated us at a large table only to drink tea. My brother and his wife were driving from Contra Costa County to join us for my parents' wedding anniversary and what they should've done was to honor my hangry dad and serve the food instead of waiting. We arrived early to check in with our reservations and we still had to wait 30-40 more minutes for the food to arrive on the table? Make it make sense. Kind of ridiculous, if you ask me! Had dinner there tonight. So a few questions for folks who are contemplating about coming here. 1) Would you like to have mediocre food? 2) Would you like to have bad service? What I mean by that is the person taking our order was not friendly at all and was just trying to get us to order as soon as possible. The people who brought the food did not say a thing and just dropped the food on the table. When we asked where our rice was to this person, no response. Then 3 minutes later that person brings the rice out. 3) Would you like to be asked to leave because they have a line outside? We were just wrapping up and was about to leave but the staff was impatient and came to us to ask that we leave as they have a long line. Please do note, we were going to leave, but was just drinking one last sip of tea. So yeah, if you answered yes to any of these questions, defintely go eat at this place. However, if you answered no, go to Ocean Pearl instead, as it is totally opposite of Mayflower. Ocean Pearls is in the same plaza. So so much better there. read more

This is the best place for Cantonese food in the Bay Area!! The set meals are great for family gatherings or events and come with a great selection of dishes. Super authentic, delicious Cantonese cuisine in the middle of Milpitas's Barber Lane plaza which is full of other Chinese spots and dessert options as well. Have been coming here on and off for years and just realized I have never written a review for it. The restaurant was renovated last year and looks quite nice: more open and brighter. Tables are not too close together and the ambiance is quite pleasant and comfortable. We ordered an assortment of dim sum (shrimp dumplings, beef rice rolls, sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaves, shrimp and chive dumplings, fried taro dumplings, bean curd skin rolls, etc.), a congee with clams and meatballs, and a chow fun with egg and shrimp. Everything was rather delicious. My favorite was the congee. Service was excellent since I have known some of the waiters for a long time. Prices are reasonable by today's standards. read more

[The 1-star review is strictly regarding the service of an employee, and if you scroll down further, it looks like she's rude to other customers as well--it's consistent behavior--apologies for dragging the rating down but you'll see why the low rating based on service alone] I've been going to Mayflower since I was young and for the most part, it's a solid dim sum place. Their siu mai is one of the best in the area. There are some good misses at times but usually passable. The biggest problem I usually have here is with the service. There are some amazing and very nice staff members, but there are some who either pretend they don't see you or have a massive attitude problem--case in point to follow. Today, I went to have dim sum with my family yesterday afternoon and ordered the baked BBQ pork bun. This item is notoriously hard to get, and usually out of stock. Halfway through the meal, I realized that we still haven't receive it and was planning on following up and asking about it. But in-between juggling the kids, I forgot and my husband paid without double-checking the bill. I remembered in the middle of dinner that night and decided to call the restaurant, hoping they could help. The woman who answered told me that the item was out of stock today and was already cancelled upon order, but she asked for the table number and total to double-check, which I appreciated. For the record, usually whoever puts in the order would verbally let us know when something's out of stock. The woman who put in our order today didn't (and judging by the accent, I suspect it was the same woman who answered my call). THEN came the problem...she decided to lecture me over the phone that it's the responsibility of the customer to check the order after they put the order in for us. I told her that it's the responsibility of the server to verbally notify the customer when something's out of stock, and she argued with me that the "usual process" is that the customer checks the order. After one more exchange, she actually hung up on me mid-sentence. I was in disbelief, and decided to call the restaurant back because I couldn't believe how rudely I was being treated when it was a miss on her part. Of course, the first woman got another employee to pick up the phone and when I explained to her why I'm upset, she apologized and told me that the servers will surely tell customers verbally when something isn't available for order. Look, I know I could've double-checked the order but I couldn't believe the audacity of the first woman to put all the blame on me. It'll be a long time before I come back to this place again because I've always had some small issues with the attitude of the woman who put my order in (she's often in the front, has short hair, and can speak mandarin and Cantonese), this is so appalling and I don't think I can deal with this poor level of customer service. If Mayflower actually wants to keep their customers, the manager should really figure out how to up-level the service of his staff. It's something he should invest more energy in or else the customers who actually care about being treated the way they deserve might decide to go to another seafood restaurant all together. Food: Short rib 5/5 Juicy and not too salty! The meat slides off the bone easily which I was really surprised about. The sauce captures all of that meaty flavor as well so it would be great over rice. Shrimp rice noodle roll 4/5 The texture for this dish is really fun to slurp(?). There's not too much flavor in the rolls themselves but the sauce is salty sweet deliciousness which means when you get to the rolls at the bottom, it's perfect because it's had time to soak up all the sauce! Clam with green onions 3/5 Green onions didn't really bring enough flavor or freshness so it tasted a a bit bland. Clay pot with mushrooms and green beans 5/5 Great deal for your money and it's super flavorful! It's stuffed full with mushrooms, meat and green onions and there are rice cakes at the bottom. The sauce on top is thick and caramelizes a bit since the pot the dish comes in is hot( do not touch!!) The meat didn't have a lot of flavor, only texture but this is remedied if you can get more of the sauce coated on it. Siu Mai 3/5 Standard siu mai. Nothing really different about this. Pork belly fried 4/5 Freshly fried pork belly- the skin is crispy and dish is very rich It comes with a side of salty beans that are great contrast. I always come here for dim sum. It's so great at Mayflower that many of my family members rent out a portion of the restaurant for banquets and other events. I see many other people giving low ratings due to the service. I feel like there is a strong misunderstanding that people are unaware of. This is your traditional Cantonese/Hong Kong dim sum restaurant. You should not expect service from that of a western restaurant. If that's what you're looking for, then don't come here. You may read this and say that's not an excuse for being rude and therefore the service is bad. As someone who has been to Hong Kong multiple times, this is actually quite normal behavior and you shouldn't see it in a negative way. Ultimately, it's a gesture that isn't quite accustomed for western culture and it's best to be understanding of that. There is a reason why this place is always so busy day in and day out. The food here is good and it's not the service that people are coming in for. I give a 4/5 mainly due to the price, and I wish they had chili oil to go with some of their dishes. As Dim Sum goes, it is difficult to do better. Good ingredients, generous portions, and good services. They used to be far busier, back 40 years ago. They are still busy, just no need to fight for a table anymore. I can see recovery from pandemic. Other than dim sum, the fried rice noodles 煎米粉 were particularly good. It is a dish with crispy fried rice noodles as a shell and fillings inside. They offer only one filling, minced beef with beans. No complaint from me, it was delicious. My visits to Mayflower have been for 100 day or birthday celebrations with group sizes of 100-160 people. With a lot of large traditional Chinese banquet restaurants closing around the Bay Area, this is one of the few that are open that service the East and South Bay. While I'm not familiar with their pricing they have, they have some pretty menu sets to choose from. This location shares parking with the entire plaza and depending on the night, it can be pretty packed so be ready to circle the lot like a shark or park further away from the restaurant so you can get some steps in after your meal. From the outside, you can't tell how big the restaurant is but as you catch glimpses of it inside, they have the ability to partition it off to cater to your group or party size. One of the celebrations I went to had a few lion dancers parading through and both had enough space to put up a nice standing decor display to take photos in front of. The service was relatively quick when bringing out food to each table and would periodically check to swap out clean plates for guests. Let's talk about the food (combined visits): - BBQ combo appetizer platter: Didn't eat much, but others really enjoyed the variety (BBQ pork, Hainan chicken, jellyfish, and beef). - Roast pig with jelly fish platter: The skin was crunchy and the meat tasted good. - Stuffed crab claws: These packed good flavor and had crab meat in it. - Abalone, shrimp, and snap peas: The shrimp was tender and the snap peas were a bit undercooked, didn't try the abalone. - Fried squab: Very good flavoring, but beware of the little bones. - Abalone, black mushrooms and greens: Enjoyed the mushrooms and the greens in their dark gravy sauce. - Steamed fish: Very tender meat although there were some scales that were hard to avoid, beware of bones. - Seafood & crab meat soup: I really enjoyed this, had 2 bowls as it was flavorful and easy to eat. - Peking duck with buns: Delicious flavor, had duck meat, the skin was on point, and the buns were soft. - Lobster with ginger: A fair amount of pieces, but difficult to eat. - Longevity noodles: Usually these are bland, but this was pretty flavorful and had mushrooms and Chinese broccoli in it. - Red bean soup: Not something I tried, but others ate it with ease. - Tapioca cake: Never had this before nor have I seen this, but it wasn't my kind of thing. Very mushy, not spongey. - Sesame cookies & other dessert plates: Didn't eat it, but there was plenty to go around the table and take home at the end of the meal. Quality of the food is above average. Hau gau is filled with whole shrimp, not minced. Shu mai is large and not packed with low fatty pork. Just enough fat. Both was delicious. Pork belly while crispy it's a bit hard to chew. Oyster in xo sauce (chef special) was deep fried ave lacked any oyster flavor. Hard pass on these. Mandatory 18% service was unsavory. New years day! We decided to try something new we haven't tried before. Dimsum was the pick, and normally we have our go to spot, but with it being new years, let's try something new! It's been a long time since the both of us have been here. It was good to see it's still around. Plenty of parking outside. They opened an outdoor area outside which is nice to see. The restaurant is clean and looks great inside. It was quite packed when we got there but we were seated immediately. You can select what you want on the menu. There's pictures for you as well, that always helps if you're not sure what you're wanting to order. We ordered the usual; sui mai, pork spare ribs, shrimp rice rolls, pork wrapped in tofu skin, and we decided to try the salt pepper fried fish, pea sprouts & duck wings. Overall, the dim sum was okay. My fiance was not a fan at all, sadly. I'm very critical when it comes to dim sum, and this was not the worst, nor was it anywhere near the best. I really thought it was okay. The sui mai was actually good, it was a good size, packed with pack and shrimp. That's always a big plus for me. The shrimp rice rolls could've used a little more sauce, and maybe not as watered down because the sauce is the flavor. The salt and pepper fish lacked salt and pepper, which was disappointing. The duck wings were decent, nice cold dish. With the food being decent, the prices did not live up to the quality of food. I guess $7-8 dollars a plate is the norm nowadays for dim sum, and that's just for the basic plates. Any speciality plates will be 9+. The pea sprouts was $10.50 and you barely got a handful. The salt and pepper fish were the same price and you probably got 10-12 small, mini nugget pieces. For 2 people, the bill came out to be $115, for 10 dishes, and that's with tip INCLUDED. I heard a lot of comments about how great dim sum was in San Jose and was deeply disappointed when I got here. First of all, they no longer had the traditional dim sum carts that this place was known for, according to a friend. Instead, they had a colored menu where you mark the items you wanted. The food came out all at once and half of them were cold when they arrived at our table, and the other half got cold by the time we got to them. We felt rushed, having to eat super fast before everything was too cold to eat. We definitely did not enjoy our experience here at all. The worst part about the experience was the steamed egg custard buns. Normally this is a favorite item that I savor at the end. Sadly, the buns smelled like dirty wet socks. I thought that maybe it was because the bamboo basket was old so I peeled the outer layer of my bun. I took one bit and spit it out. It was the bun itself that tasted old and dirty. My review is for their banquet style dinner, since I came here for a friend's birthday in one of their private rooms. I haven't tried the dim sum options yet, but the dishes they served during the Chinese banquet meal were absolutely delicious! We had so many different options to try, with lots of different proteins and vegetables, and nothing was overly oily or salty (though I wouldn't recommend this for anyone who's vegan or has a seafood allergy). I liked the birds nest soup and all of the scallop/shrimp dishes the most! Our waiter was super accommodating and kept checking with us to see when they should start serving the food - and despite language barriers, everyone still had a great time and they even brought out extra desserts (the baked tapioca pudding - which I definitely ate too much of cause I love custard lol) for our large party of 20+. Worst experience EVER!!!! This whole experience was bad from start to finish....food and service were horrible. Starting with seating, this is a very large banquet room with several open 4 tops, yet we were still seated in the corner by serving station. Even though the servers walked by us constantly, it still took 20+ minutes for even our order to be taken. I waited at least 15 minutes before I asked the head server to take our order, she scoffed and dismissed me. I regret that we didn't leave at that moment! It took another 10 minutes for the server to finally come and only after we stood up to leave. The order came out quickly, but the food was under and over cooked! The shu mai was doughy and over cooked. The vegetable spring roll had barely any vegetables in them and were filled with slimy mushrooms. The garlic green beans were good. The potstickers were cold. The pork dumplings were uncooked on top and the pork didn't taste good. The bbq pork buns had barely any meat and were extremely doughy. We asked for soy sauce and they didn't understand us...it's a Chinese restaurant and we had to explain soy sauce. In the end, we got vinegar but now soy sauce. The last insult was that they charged us an 18% gratuity for 3 people. Absolutely horrible experience. We walked away wondering if our race had something to do with the unacceptable experience since everyone else seemed to have prompt service. I do not recommend this horrible place. As much money as they made, we should have gotten top-tier service, but instead we got a whole lot of attitude and cold shoulders. I could write a whole novel, but let me start by saying we were told to be there at 3 for a 4:30 wedding and there were still customers eating and staff eating at the tables. When we asked questions, they kept telling us to talk to the manager, who was a jerk and kept walking away from us and hiding. Actually, one of the staff got into a shouting match with a customer while we were setting up. They were still moving tables last minute and the set up was not even what we asked for. I was a bridesmaid and was pissed for the bride and groom. Every time we needed something done, they would tell us to look for the manager who was nowhere to be found. When someone asked for ice to chill the beers, the manager responded with, "tell your guests to get it themselves." They did not vacuum or mop the floors after lunch service. They even had customers coming in and out of the restaurant (Yes, they still opened the patio portion of the restaurant to customers while a whole wedding was happening). It was a disaster and I have never had such an experience. They did not adjust the lighting when we needed them to, did not serve the food on time and was just unprofessional and crass. I have been coming here with my family for dim sum for a long time and I have to say I have never been this disappointed before. Honestly, it might be due to some changes since Covid time but this was the first time, I disliked coming here. The environment is casual. They usually have a good arrangement for family together and family-style dinners. But today, maybe because it was breakfast/brunch time, the arrangement was kinda sloppy. The tables and chairs were a lot closer to other tables and my family and I had to sit on only one side of the table because we couldn't fit on the other. The service is like every Chinese restaurant so nothing to say about it. We got our food fast and got help when we needed it. The only issue was when they did bring out the food, they ignored my mom when she wanted the food to be cut. We asked again and they did it, so no big deal, they probably just didn't hear but it did bother some members of the family. The only reason I gave this restaurant 3 stars is because the food was good. You order on sheets that they give you, they don't use carts anymore (:(, I miss those days). I like that they have pictures of each item so for those that can't read or speak Chinese, it's nice to have. The food came out fast and the tea was nice. The food was flavorful and filling. My favorite is the Shu Mai (Shrimp & Pork Dumplings (I think?, I only know the name lol)). It's pretty big, moist, and just delicious. If you're looking for a place to host a multi-table party or just to dine out with a few friends or family, you will find yourself in luxury at Mayflower. The food is pleasantly plated and deliciously crafted. Aside from dim sum in the mornings and lunch, they offer a la carte dishes as well as pre-set meals. Classic Canton cuisine as well as innovative spins keep the palate fresh and craving for more. Fresh seafood, juicy meats, and vibrant vegetables and fungi - you are bound to order something delicious, and if you're unfamiliar, ask the staff for recommendations! I personally enjoy the dim sum very much and the set meals have great pairings. The set meals have great shareable portions of everything and is balanced with protein, vegetables, and carbs (love the fried rice and noodles). The staff here is top notch in serving their customers; they're efficient, kind, and generous. One of the managers used to operate a different restaurant (another Mayflower that used to be in Union City before ownership changed) and brought a lot of the original staff with him. He definitely knows how to bring in and keep customers coming back. This mall gets busy so parking can be horrendous during peak days and hours but you can typically find parking the further away from the right side of the mall. There's also street parking and the walk isn't bad, just a tad dark. Try to call to make reservations if possible or put your name down. This is a hotspot for diners and the churn isn't too quick (given that it's a sit down and chatty kind of atmosphere). It also can get a bit loud but it adds to the experience in my opinion. I think this is one of the best places for banquet style meals in this part of the Bay Area. It's been a long time since my last visit, years ago, Mayflower carried the standard for dim sum. I feel competition has caused a lower quality here. Nonetheless dim sum is always delightful. After grocery shopping, it was lunch time. My shopping buddy and I ordered the dry garlic string beans, har gow, lotus leaf wrapped rice, fried taro dumpling,, bean curd roll and shrimp rice rolls. They came out quickly. When warm or hot they were exceptional good. So with table conversation, they got cold. The taro was barely warm but with the nicely flaky crush. Har gow had a hardy shrimp taste filled with large shrimp and thick skin. The lotus leaf rice had plenty of minced filling and half egg yolk. It was good. Lately I favor bean curd roll but on this occasion, here it was disappointing because it was not warm. The shrimp roll much like har gow ie similar it was alright, nothing special perhaps redundant on my part for ordering. Aside from the food delivery, service was not existent, no check in, follow up and had to flag service person for the check. There's an automatic 18% service charge. This was by far one of the craziest dining experiences I've ever had. If I could give zero stars, I would. 1. Our waiter was completely unresponsive. We waited 15+ minutes just to get water, and even then had to flag someone else down. 2. The bowl and spoon were visibly dirty, with an actual dead bug on the spoon. Disgusting. 3. My family and I waited maybe 30 minutes. When we got here, it was already packed. We marked which food we wanted on the paper menu. We were seated near the room divider inside the restaurant. Having been back here for a while, foods is great and services is good this time! We came here early dinner on Friday night and it was empty but by the time we leaved it was busy. We order the set menu for 6 people for $208 without taxes and tips. It comes with 6 giant clams, soups, whole pecking duck, stream fish, veggies, crabs over noodles and desserts. It is prefect for 6 average people eater. The giants clam was fresh and good. The stream fish was fresh and light. We had left over so it was too much foods for us. Had a quick Dim Sum lunch here, so i didn't take any photos. But rest the assure the Shumai, Hargow, Scallop & Shrimp Dumplings, Pork Ribs with Black Bean Sauce, Pork XLB, and the Roasted Pork Belly's were excellent. The dumplings were good size. Very authentic. The service was good as well, they refilled ice water without being asked. read more

This review is for the restaurant as a guest of a party hosted at this restaurant. I attended a family party here as a guest in a party of what must have been over 200 people. The atmosphere was good, there was a pretty much separate room towards the back of the restaurant where we all were seated. The restaurant was busy but I was extremely impressed by the service, speed, quality of food and presentation. Definitely a professional group of people were serving our party and it made it a great experience where I think everyone was very impressed. Would definitely recommend for parties and looking forward to visiting at some point for a regular meal :) read more
