At this restaurant, my reuben sandwich was decent, but the side of mac & cheese couldn't have been any smaller. It seemed like it was the size of a shot glass. Would it kill them to increase it to a normal size?!?!? Service was acceptable, although everyone working on the day of my visit had that "I'd rather be somewhere else" look on their faces. HORRIBLE experience. I was so excited to get my first deli meat sandwich after childbirth so my mom ordered one for me. When I opened the sealed bag and box, there was a live bug on the sandwich! I called (had the receipt and everything) and they wouldn't replace the order or refund. Literally what a JOKE. That was the most disgusting experience ever - complete health hazard. I ended up going to McAlister's on Saturday January 15th since I was in the Castleton Mall area. What I noticed when I walked in that there was so many tables dirty, I placed my food order with the cashier, she stated it'll be a 20-mintue wait, I informed her I don't mind waiting. I ordered same thing I always get at McAlister's which was the Justaspud. I only had on the Justaspud bacon, cheddar jack cheese, and sour cream, I ordered two chocolate chip cookies, and sweet tea. By, the time my meal was ready still no tables were clean, guy who brought me my food I informed him there are no where to seat down since a lot of tables were dirty. This has been our second time at this location store 1396. Hadn't had a problem before, this time my 12 year old ordered a kids mak and cheese and a big piece of glass was in the bite she took. Luckily she felt something hard and she took it out. I let the person at the cash register know and she did give me a refund but I did not see her let anyone else know so I'm not sure if protocol calls for them to dump the whole batch out or what. I fell in love with the McAlister's Deli chain of restaurants just this past October as I found myself traveling across Northern Indiana by wheelchair and trying hard to eat healthier along the way. Given my deep love for iced tea, it's almost unimaginable that I'd never experienced McAlister's prior to October 2014. Founded in 1989 in Oxford, Mississippi by a retired dentist, McAlister's Deli now has over 300 locations in 23 states and is part of what is known as the "fast casual" dining trend. The menu includes a variety of deli sandwiches (both hot and cold) along with Texas-sized spuds (baked potatoes), soups, salads, and desserts. Of course, the chain also is famous for its sweet tea that is available both as a drink with your meal and in gallon jugs. While McAlister's Deli isn't exactly hard to find in Indianapolis, I will admit that I was a little excited when it was announced that it was taking over the spot abandoned by Stir Crazy on the West end of Castleton Square Mall's frontage strip. During this four days off to celebrate the new year, I've been trying to squeeze in a few new restaurants and my day had me at Castleton Square. Perfect. I will first stress that you should access McAlister's from the main entrance side as the other side (which also hosts Houlihan's) isn't particularly wheelchair friendly. You enter a main entrance with large wooden doors and immediately to your left is a pick-up/to go counter separated by a wall from where diners order. I will admit that the first time I visited McAlister's I found the entire experience a bit confusing and it seems like there's an assumption among employees that people know how the process works. I mean, seriously, who would actually assume that there's an iced tea counter and you go up to it to get your drink THEN take your number to your table, post it up, then wait for your food to arrive. I suppose it's a way to stress their iced tea, but it would be nice to actually have it explained a bit more clearly. I can't remember what I ordered the last time at McAlister's, I believe the grilled chicken sandwich, but this time around I spied a pot roast sandwich that is served hot and it sounded perfect on a rainy and slightly chilly day in Indy. It came with one side, I chose Sun Chips, and then the iced tea is extra. The sandwich comes with melted provolone cheese and roasted peppers on ciabatta and is served with gravy. I will admit that I either couldn't read these toppings on the menu or somehow completely missed them as there's simply no way I'd have ordered the sandwich and I'd have likely stuck to something a bit more in line with my taste buds. When it arrived, I was surprised to see the toppings and never did figure out that the gravy was gravy (looked like soup). I removed the toppings, which to me rather overwhelmed the sandwich, and enjoyed what was left of the pot roast and the great ciabatta bread. Overall, it's definitely not a sandwich I will get again. The main dining room was a bit confusing and I didn't find the one small row that was wheelchair friendly. I ended up sitting in what I believe to be a private dining area that is available for rental. It was okay, but I was the only one back there and it definitely caused service to drop (though I will admit that one young female tried to be attentive). I did get a refill of iced tea - I was asked once before I was ready and ended up having to go back up to the counter myself as no one ever came back to the table. The McAlister's decor is fairly typical for McAlister's - it reflects both its Indianapolis home and the renovated garage in which the chain was founded. It's friendly and warm, though I'm a bit disappointed with what feels like only a modest commitment to wheelchair access. Let's face it. Most chain experiences are fairly consistent and McAlister's Deli as a chain is remarkably consistent in offering tasty and healthier fare along with enthusiastic and helpful employees. I found this experience to be just a notch below what I've come to expect from McAlister's, but it's still early in the restaurant's life and this was far from a "bad" experience - it just wasn't up to the usual McAlister's standards. There was one employee in particular who certainly radiated the McAlister's spirit and here's hoping my next visit will knock this up to at least a four-star rating. read more

The good: Besides the typical good food and variety that McAlister's has to offer, this location is also fairly large and the service was great. The not-so-good: McAlister's in general is a little over priced in my opinion, but at least the portion sizes accommodate the money you spend. I had to run to Castleton for something and was getting hungry, so I stopped by McAlister's Deli for lunch. The place was bigger than I thought it would be and the decor was nicer than others I have been in. I ordered at the counter and then walked to another counter to tell the drink person what I ordered so they could make it for me. If it were busier I would have been annoyed I had to wait in line twice for something, but since it wasn't busy, it wasn't too bad. I ordered the BLTA, which came with a lot of bacon and not a lot of avocado. In fact, I had to lift the bread to see if there really was any avocado on it. There was.. sort of. We were 1 of about 3 tables in the restaurant at 6:00 pm on a Saturday evening. We ordered and waited over 20 minutes for our food. The place was dirty and when one of the superiors told a coworker to go clean a booth, he leisurely went to look and came back without cleaning the booth having not done it. He seemed confused. There was plenty of cleaning he could have done. Napkins and crumbs all over the floor. Trust me, the place was a ghost town. No reason for these young workers to not be out cleaning up the store. I saw a worker come out of the back with a glove on and when he returned to the back, he pushed the door open with his gloved hand. That is not taking proper sanitary precautions. I love McAlister's but this was a very disappointing visit. Not sure I'll be back to this location. If I could leave 0 stars I would. I want to start out by saying that I am glad that I had a reward for a free meal and free tea. Most likely I will not be returning to this location ever again. I was greeted when I first walked in and and the woman took my order. I ordered a choose two, veggie spud, four cheese melt and an unsweetened tea. The woman gives me my tea and it's sweet tea. Strike one, no problem it happens. Me and my friend proceed to sit down and shortly comes our meals. The woman placed my meal and immediately I saw a black hair right on top of my sandwich!!! The woman asks if everything looks okay and I just point and say there is a hair on my food. The woman only said " okayyy" and takes my food from me and takes it back. About 5 minutes later she brings it back and says " okay sis, here it is". Um... excuse me? I don't even get a SORRY? I get a ok sis? The spud also did not have butter nor sour cream, I had to ask for those. The sandwich was doughy and bland, the potato was dry and just gross. I was scolded by my cashier when I attempted to use my birthday coupon for not printing it. First - I'm not writing this to get anything free from this restaurant. I'm not sure I would visit this location again,even though it's less than 5 minutes from my office. This is by far the worst McAlisters I have been to in the Central Indianapolis area. It's not even close. I've had other bad experiences here, mostly related to wait time, but this one warrants a review. First - there were two people in front of me when I arrived, with two people at the counter. The two in front of me were taken care of, and then one (manager) walked off to deliver food, and the other (employee) gathered food for a take out order. I waited over five minutes in line (and had at least 5 people behind me) by the time I was greeted and was able to place my order. Order placed (I had a special order - grilled chicken sandwich on baguette instead of croissant, and mayo instead of honey mustard). Food comes out in about 3-5 minutes (normal time) but it only has mayo on it. I bring it back and the employee assures me there is cheese on the sandwich and offers to bring me a tomato and lettuce. I sit back down and hear her take someone else's order at the counter. 2-3 more minutes go by, and I come back up to the counter and tell the manager I want a new sandwich (the tomato and lettuce were in the serving window the entire time). I'm told it will be out right away and I go back and sit down. To Manager's credit, he came to my table and apologized and refunded my meal, which I did not ask for nor wanted. I don't complain to get something free. I just want my order to be accurate. I waited 10-15 more minutes and no sandwich. After spending over a half hour in the restaurant, I walk up to the counter, greet the surprised employee, and tell her to cancel my order and leave. To any management who looks at this review, please make some changes to your management and staff so that customers can have a pleasant experience like I have at your other locations. McAlister's Deli is a great place for lunch. I have now been to a couple locations for McAlisters and had a great experience both locations. Their sandwiches are a great size for lunch, and they provide a lot of different options. The atmosphere is perfect for a quiet lunch with family and friends, and the staff is great. They come around and check on you, making sure you have everything you need. The place is very clean, including the bathrooms. The prices are fair as well. This was such a disappointing experience. I love McAlisters but living downtown I don't get it have it as much as I want. I was shopping at Castleton and decided I'd eat here. First impression-why are there 3 people working during lunch on a weekend? Stood in line for decent time ordered and grabbed my drink. My sweet tea tasted off but I moved on. Waited another 10 mins and I got my food. A skip and salad. The salad was wrong which was my fault. They replaced immediately. However when I got my new one they brought the salad bowl out on a dirty plate. I observed many other tables still waiting on food. Through out my meal another worker joined and was cleaning and by the time I left they finally had more than one register open. We always try and go to McAlister's for lunch when we are near the Castleton Mall. Today, we again went to McAlister's and found that evidently things have changed at least at this location. I always order the New Yorker as it is a good sized sandwich with side of chips. I received a sandwich with about 50% less meat and instead of a plate full of chips with the sandwich, I received a small bag of chips. I eat here on the reg. They are super quick and my mom and I both wanted to get the same thing. The worker suggested getting a whole sandwich and splitting it and ordering an extra side to save some money, which I really appreciated. If you do a survey on your receipt you get a free dessert, and I love their rice Crispy treats. They are famous for their tea, but since I don't really drink tea I get the lemonade which I think is great. Their sandwich pickles are awesome too and you can get An unlimited amount!
