I purchased a Jeep Cherokee through them in 2016. The price was reasonable. The entire process and experience for buying the car was what you would image a typical car purchase would be like. They make you feel stupid and uncomfortable. They try to trick you into spending all this extra money on things you obviously do not need. They kept trying to pressure me to sign the final purchase sheet despite me telling them I was not going to sign anything and regardless the pricing was wrong. I have had nonstop problems since I purchased the vehicle. After bringing it into them several times they took it over to the jeep dealership who determined there was a recall on all 2015 jeep Cherokees. It was "fixed" for several months but recently started having the same issues. When I purchased the vehicle I did not get the interest rate I hoped for but was told by the financial guy that I should make payments for about a year and then come back to talk about refinancing at a lower interest rate. I went back a few weeks ago to meet with a financial person but they directed me to a sales person. When All was said and done they basically could not help me, ran my credit, and tried to convince me to "Walk our today wii a brand new car" I was born at night I was not born last night. Every time I have to deal with this shady place I always feel violated and as if I've been left in a ditch! I only come here because of my extended warranty, otherwise I would stay away from this place like the plague! read more

If you are bored and want to go to see why car dealers and the process of buying a car has such a horrible reputation visit these jokers. I've been buying cars for 40 years from Mercedes and Jaguar to Chevrolet, Pontiac, Toyota, Ford, Dodge, Volvo, and more that I'm forgetting. This was by far the worst experience I've ever had. They repeatedly tried to bait and switch on the sale. After deciding to not fall for their shenanigans I made the deal. When I went to pick up my car "certified " I found body trim damage that was so visible that I was almost caught off guard. They agreed to order the part and replace it. When I got a confirmation call that the part was ready I was told that I was coming in for differential repairs. The woman who called literally wanted to argue with me. Transfer of my special license plates was screwed up and they ordered me new plates. If I was given free oil changes I wouldn't go back. For any of you old timers that remember the used car lots on Western Avenue...at least they kissed you while they were screwing you. I would have gladly paid $1000 more for a positive experience. There are some really good dealers and salespeople out there. These jokers are the poster child of "run..don't walk." Unfortunately this experience casts a black cloud over the entire McGrath dealerships. The one star is for the one service person I dealt with when I came in goes to Jerry. They damaged my car and then asked me not to come back. I purchased my car though this dealership. I've been taking my car there for car washes ever since I purchased it. The gentleman who washed my car kindly asked if I would like him to vacuum out the interior (I had no idea they'd even do that). I accepted and when I got back in my car I had 3 big, noticable scratches on my dashboard. I noticed it once i got on the expressway. I called and complained and brought it back in the following day. It was pretty much my word against his that he did the damage. He acknowledged that he vacuumed the dashboard as well. I talked to the floor manager and she was extremely rude and kept asking me what I wanted from her. She stated they could not get the scratches out and would not replace the whole dash for 3 scratches. So I bring my car in and leave with scratches and the female manager treated me like I was wrong for being upset. She even told me never to come back there again, even though I am awarded free car washes since I purchased my car there. I call the general manager, explained the whole thing to him, he sounded sympathetic and said he would look into it and call me back. That was over a month ago. I've called three more times since then and left messages but nothing. The customer service there is completely unprofessional. The management there is beyond disrespectful. read more

I have been going to McGrath Honda since my first 1995 Civic when they were back on Route 19. I always raved about the service to family and friends. Seems things have changed: There are plenty of other warnings about the service department here so I'll try to keep it brief. Brought our van in with an issue. We were told that it would cost ~ $2,100.00 to repair. I questioned the rep. about the cost of one of the repairs. I wanted to know the price of the part and how much time was being added for the work. I was told the part was $614.00 and the work was going to be 1 1/2 hours for $231.00. This did not include being told that we had a major oil leak and would need a new oil pump. With no oil leaking on our floor, and no missing oil from my engine, I figured the problem was the $600 part. I went online and found that Autozone had the part for $399. I bought the part, watched a Youtube video, and was able to complete the installation of the part, in my 20 degree garage in about 45 minutes. I can honestly say that I could now do that job, easily, in 20 minutes, as I'm sure a trained Honda mechanic could. Car runs great again and I saved well over $1000. Beware as it seems this service department likes to add jobs on and overcharge for jobs that do need to be done. Never again! 1/9/18 In response to the comment from Honda- My last name is Toren. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!!!!!!!!!!!!! Brought my 2014 Accord in because engine light came on and it wouldn't stay running. Was told that the timing chain was off 7 teeth, the valves were bent and i needed a new engine and to come down right away to pay for one or get it financed. When i wasn't approved for financing they kept insisting that i could have someone co-sign for me and could email them the info. Given i didnt have the 4K they wanted for an engine i quickly shopped auto mechanics and all of them said my car should still be under warranty. One auto shop told me to contact McGrath in St. Charles and i did. Talked to the service manager and the first thing he said was my car was under warranty and to tow it to him and he will take care of it. Went back to Elgin McGrath and told them i was towing it to St. Charles. Service person became rude and said "why, you are going to need a new engine and you are going to get it covered under warranty, and when I end up having to put a new engine in the call him and apologize and tell him he was right" Well guess what!!!!!!! When St. Charles McGrath looked at it they found the following. Time chain was only off 4 teeth NO BENT VALVES And got it covered under warranty!!!!!!!! Engine was fine, just need a new timing system. So McGrath in Elgin flat out lied to me about the problem with my car, never mentioned a warranty and only wanted to make money off of me in a desperate time. read more

My wife and I recently purchased our first Honda in February. We are so very happy with our new CRV but even so with the experience. To preface, this purchase came about from a vehicle accident that totaled our car. It was a stressful time being haggled by so many places until we came here. It was by far the best experience either of us have had at a dealership visiting McGrath Honda in Elgin. We worked very closely with Jim Diller. So honest, patient, courteous, polite and friendly, also funny. Just extremely enjoyable to deal with, he didn't waste our time and was very honest. We came into the dealership to simply test drive a Honda which we weren't even seriously considering but I'm so glad we did. Jim really helped make that happen and the sales manager Jim Martinez was equally as great. My wife and I are so grateful for the excellent service, respect of our time and funds as well as the follow up after the purchase. You both went above and beyond for us and I can say with certainty that if and when we come to occupy another vehicle we will most certainly be coming back to see you Jim Diller. I would never give this dealership my money, trust or business. I was given an Internet quote from the dealer on a particular car that included the destination (it stated so as well on the quote). Went in, ended up talking to Mohammed and Cory. We were jerked around with the pricing and was told this car was a 'unicorn' ...it's a freaking Accord, please. The best price they came back with was $28,892. We should them another quote from a dealer for the same car for $27,188. They came back with a new quote of $28,173. When all was said and done the Internet quote we got from McGrath was $657 less than their last best offer in the showroom and $985 more than a competitor (they claim that our competitor's offer didn't include the destination fee...lies! We found the original email and it does just like the McGrath internet quote) . What a waste time and a joke. Many years ago I tried to purchase a car from this dealership and had a really miserable experience with the Sales Manager (Chris). I swore I would never go back, unfortunately I tried to give them another shot and it was comical how dishonest these people continue to be. This was by far the worst car buying experience of my life. The same Sales Manager (Chris) was over the top dishonest and arrogant again. I spent hours in the dealership working out the deal, after having a verbal agreement on price and options they raised the price by 2k hoping that I wouldn't notice. I noticed when signing the papers in the finance office. By continuing to employee this so called Sales Manager (Chris) the owner of the dealership is condoning this type of behavior. STAY AWAY!!!!!!!! Just came back from McGrath Elgin IL. My wife and I are very disappointed. Worst dealership I have ever purchased from. They are very dishonest. My wife and I bought a 2011 Odyssey for $12500 (plus trade in) 8 months ago we put 5969 miles on the car since we owned it. The Odyssey is in better shape now than when we drove off the lot. I went today to see if they would be interested in buying it back and the car they sold us for $13,000 out the door they offered us $6500 for today. What are you joking! I did not expect to get full amount but what is wrong with the great car they told me they sold us. If it is now only worth $6500 why did they sell it to us for $13,000. Clearly, it was not worth the price they sold it to us for. I thought they ripped us off originally but they just confirmed it. I do not trust them at all. Never will buy or get service from them again. If I could I would not even give them 1 star. How can a company stay in business ripping people off. We regret we purchased a car from them. Don't you think we would feel ripped off if we bought a car for $13,000 and now they tell us it is worth $6500 8 months later. I mean what kind of business would do this. I have dealt with them for years but just recently I had an unfortunate instance where their finance team ran my credit without my authorization.  It wasn't a misunderstanding of any sort, they just took it upon themselves to run my credit weeks after I told them I would shop elsewhere.  This act is illegal and all I got was a simple "we're sorry" then complete radio silence.  Besides the privacy concern, I'm left having to dispute this against my credit report which is both time consuming and frustrating.  I hope they improved their processes to prevent this from happening again but nonetheless, the damage is done and my review must reflect that. read more

Service department - Money making scams or untrained people? I have been taking my Honda's to the McGrath, first St Charles and now Elgin for quite a few years but as of late have had strange "coincidences". You be the judge. In my case, this is strike two and about enough to break ties with this service department. Incident #1: As part of regular oil change service, they also take care of recalls on air bags. All is good until the day after me getting the car back. The airbag light is on. Strange as I never experienced this issue before. Took my car in the week after and they want their regular $80+ to check this out. Had to argue with them that it is their issue as they touched the airbag system and now this issue started. They finally agree to look at it and say no issues as no light is on. I drive to the end of their lot and the light comes back on. They do a thorough eval this time and say the computer went bad and write up over $1000 estimate as this is dangerous to drive without it, etc. I decline service. Take it to an off the street mechanic, explain the problem to him and he quickly notices the cable attached to the computer is loose. He fixes this and I give him $30 and the issue is resolved. I wonder if Honda did this themselves to get the $1000+ but shrug it off. Maybe a true coincidence and gave them the benefit of doubt. Incident #2, last week into today (6/12): In the prior visit, they recommended front and rear brakes to be done and provide the brake pad thickness to the exact mm but said I should get it done with the next oil change. I took my car in last week as it was on the back of my mind. They write up the estimate and give me a loaner. A few hours later, I get a call they ran into a snag and the mechanics broke 5 lug nuts in the 4 wheels and it will be $500 extra to replace those. WOW. Why did I not get this call when the first nut broke and why did they wait for the 5? Also, the rear nut is loose and not coming off so they cannot perform the rear brakes anymore. They say they have never removed tires to my car and hence it is not their fault the way they were put on were at fault. Seemed strange since I only took my car in for service to this place for many years. Also, them providing exact thickness of brake pads on regular tires, not the aluminium ones where you can see the pads. Thought maybe they take wheels off to provide exact measures. Told them to just take care of the front brakes and to not replace lugs as per the adviser it is very labor intensive and hence the cost. I drive my car and not even to the end of lot and notice a humming sound coming from front. This was very new and I take the car back and speak to the adviser. Since this was Saturday, I was asked to leave the car until Monday. Received the call and was told it is the wheel bearings going out, very strange since there was no sound when bringing car in? Did they mess this up when breaking the lug nuts? What a strange coincidence? The estimate came back with over $2000 and once again, not their fault as the bearings just went bad while in the shop. So, $800 for bearings, + $150 for front lug nuts + $100 for alignment. What a scam, the lugs come with the bearing hub and the alignment should be included with the job as it is needed when u change the bearing/hub. Also, now some item in the steering column is bent and there is a total of over $2000 in repair work. I ask the service adviser for me to speak with Bruce (in charge of Service) and was told he has been gone in over a year. Strange since I worked with him in December 2016 and it is June 2017 now. I see this as lies and deceit and them thinking the customers are stupid enough to believe everything they say. You bring in a car and twice in a row, the car has visible new issues when as u leave the lot? What a coincidence, really? BTW... the other mechanic charges $25 to replace a lug. Now he will also be looking at replacing the bearings issue that Honda caused. Also, no more buying Honda's from this place also. I was just about to. read more

I have been looking at the reviews for Mcgrath Honda in Elgin. I was thinking of my purchase of my new 2014 Accord EXL-V6 Nav. Jordan Brown was my salesman and he was GREAT. The finance person also was great. I purchased the car off the showroom floor with all the bells and whistles along with after market wheels. These add-ons where on the car and was what made me like the car. I walked into Mcgrath Honda willing and able to purchase a new car. Jordan and his boss worked with me and gave me a good price on the car along with the factory honda wheels and tires. I bought the car and drove it home at about 10pm On a day in June of 2014. I took off the chrome wheels for the 2014 winter and back on go summer of 2015. The car was not driven for the winter of 2015 it sat in my garage. The chrome wheels that I purchased with my car were loosing the finish on them. The chrome was flaking off. :(( I took the car to the dealer in the spring of 2016 and was told by another salesman because Jordan is no longer there that there was no warranty on the wheels and I could pay another company and have them refinished for approx $250. This is VERY upsetting that after paying over 35k to Mcgrath on a new car they are not willing to stand behind what they sell ,especially when it is a brand new car with new after market wheels. I was not told that the finish on the wheels had a "shelf life " of 12 month. For what I payed for this car and the dealer not helping with this issue made me sick to my stomach. My daughter was in the market for a new car to replace her old civic but after the mis treatment I received from Mcgrath I did not push her to Mcgrath Honda. She bought a new Mitsubishi in January and my wife bought a new Mitsubishi as well today. I like to do business where you are taken care of and where they stand behind their product and not look the other way when there is a problem with the product. The morral of the story is that for the price of wheel repair/replace Mcgrath Honda lost two new car sales and possibly a third. Stand behind what you sell to stay in business. Good luck. read more

Even in this day and age, people are still being pre-judged. My husband and I went to this dealership to purchase a car for our daughter. We came in on a Thursday evening, picked out a car we liked, test drove it, and asked all the pertinent questions, including "IS THIS PRICE NEGOTIABLE?" We were told "absolutely." We left the dealership at 9 pm (closing time), with a promise that we would return/call when we made our decision, and after we looked at a few other dealerships. We returned on Saturday afternoon (after calling first to inform the salesman that we were coming). We spoke with both the "Assistant" General Manager, and THE General Manager. They both were pompous in their discussions with us, and tried to explain that they NEVER haggle with prices, and that EVERYONE who buys from them pays the sticker price....yeah right!! My husband and I brought our own financing, and we were ready to walk out the door with a purchase, but instead we were insulted, and even told right to our face, that they "didn't size people up, or judge them--as an example, because of how big they are." My husband works out, and is tall with large muscles---so it leaves me to wonder, if this was the reason for us not getting a deal for the car we selected---not even a 1% discount was offered to us. This GM didn't know the profession of my husband, or that he has an advanced degree, or that he has been in his field of work for over 22 years, or that he is a God fearing man, etc. etc.-----but his immature and demeaning statement told it all. The first example you give, you directly correlate it with my husband's size, then look him up an down when you say it----WHO DOES THAT???? I would NEVER NEVER recommend anyone to this dealership----don't waste your time, there are MANY MANY MANY other Honda dealerships in the Chicagoland area, who would sincerely appreciate and welcome your business----and WILL NOT PRE-JUDGE YOU.......My daughter currently owns a Honda Accord Coupe, this Honda purchase is our fourth- nevertheless, their lost was our gain......just like Julia Roberts said in the movie, Pretty Woman......"big mistake....HUGE!" I should have looked at the poor Yelp reviews before we wasted our time....the 2-star overall low rating is very much legitimate and substantiated!! Whew....God was looking out for us once again----and prevented us from buying from this dealership----they don't deserve our business. One note, the salesman, Bob, was great, and seemed sincere----I feel sorry that his managers are not! Let me start by saying I love Honda's. We now have 4 in the family. Last year we picked up a new pilot at the Honda in St Charles and got excellent service a great price. This year when I was looking for a new Civic SI I found the exact car I was looking for at Mcgrath Honda in Elgin. We thought we would get the same service and respect we got at the McGrath in St Charles but that was not to be the case. We did get a great deal in spite of the options that you come to find out are not options at all. They want you to pay 400 for 4 locking lug nuts that you can pick up for 40$ at any auto parts store. When I said I didn't want them the manager said he would split it. I still thought that was to much but whatever I did want that car. So I paid an extra 200$ the sales guy was great but the manager seemed like he didn't want to sell me the car. When he found out I already had financing and that I didn't need him to fun my credit they tried to trick me into a credit app. At every turn I felt like he was trying to kill the deal. After reading some of the other reviews I see I'm not the only one this manager gave a hard time. WE EXPECT BETTER FROM HONDA!!! best cars around but McGrath in Elgin will never see my face or my money again. read more

DO NOT COME HERE!!!! I decided one day to check my cars value on KBB, due to the chip shortage i knew my cars value had increased and was curious. I got my cash offer from KBB for the price of 4,250!! Awesome! Wesley called me the next morning with that offer and said he would be happy to give me that cash offer if not more!!! I told him that it's a far drive from Dekalb to Elgin and he assured me we could make that deal happen. Of course he had to take a look for himself which is fair. Couple days after I set an appointment with Wesley for a Monday. Monday rolls around and I make the drive, quite excited actually! Parked and walked inside. Was greeted by a porter who took me to the manager. Told him I was here for Wesley about my KBB offer. They told me Wesley is not in today and he actually isn't the one who I should be talking to. Soon a sales man sat me down asked some quick questions and asked for my keys. No less than 3 minutes later the gentleman returns with some paperwork and my keys. He told me the best they could give me was 1,500 dollars. At this point I feel offended, disappointed, and quite pissed the fck off. What complete and utter bullsht. I walked out and I will never return to Honda of Elgin. Emailed Wesley and told him how disappointed I was that not only he wasn't there but the lowball offer they gave me. No returned email... shows me your customer service is garbage. STAY AWAY!!! There people are scammers and disgusting. All they are there for is a paycheck. If I could give negative stars I would. Start to finish what a terrible experience. I bought my car from this place, which is a whole other story. this place and Honda in general is such a scam. Brought my 16 Civic in for an a/c check because it's not working. Was told 9/10 times this is covered under warranty, but there is that one time it won't be. The only good part of this experience was getting a loaner vehicle- although after this review I'm sure they will charge my credit card I gave them for some asinine charges. Got a call that it would not be covered under warranty due to it being a different part of the air conditioner that was "damaged", but the part that was covered under warranty was also damaged and leaking per the paperwork. What a loophole. I was told when I picked my car up "the condenser isn't damaged, it's just leaking" what!!? I was also completely rushed through the beginning paperwork that I signed because they were "so busy" so they never told me that the a/c inspection was $300. I never got a number. I think that is disgusting. I looked at my paperwork and in the corner in the tiniest writing is "estimate- $300." On me for not looking more closely, but you think they would tell me that.. everything they told me on the phone and on the written estimate were completely different. Such a scam. What a horrible way to run a business. I will tell everyone to run far away from McGrath. Awful awful awful. I will probably update this when I'm less upset and can remember more details, but for now I'm seeing red . read more

Very Deceptive people. I got a coupon for $45 for the works (oil change, tire rotations, top fluids) and decided to take in my 2015 CRV. When my invoice came it was twice that amount. When i asked why, they said because my car uses synthetic oil. As far as I know all the Hondas use synthetic oil. I own a 2011 Accord and it uses synthetic oil. Additionally, the lady that charges was ignoring me when i was waiting to pay. she had her back to me and i was standing there for a good 5 minutes. read more
