Horrible service Dept. Diagnosed my car wrong charged me for the parts that shouldn't have been replaced. Managers are a joke there. No one seems to know anything. Quoted a lot of phony charges on the initial offer, For example, besides sales tax and license and doc fees, there were over $300 in fees to "other government bodies" and a $350 acquisition fee. They acquired the car in trade. I would never return for another. The McGrath group has a long history but this deal put me off. I bought the car because although not cheap it was what I needed. I test-drove it and noticed a front-end noise and they fixed that. But noticed the radio lit up when turned on but was interested in the mechanical noise. After delivery, I found the radio had no sound although it worked otherwise. Come to find out that the separate amplifier was blown so no sounds. That was quoted by a Hyundai dealer at nearly $800 not including tax and labor. I have often said I would rather give a fair profit buying a car if I get good service. 6 months later they still haven't sent the tittle to my Credit Union in spite of repeated calls. read more

I purchased a 2015 Pilot last year from McGrath and started having my vehicle serviced there as well. Long story short, my experience with McGrath is that their service department acts very interested in trying to fix your problems but never seems to actually fix the problem. I had issues with my brakes (coincidentally, this occurred almost immediately after they sold me on their "brake inspection and cleaning/lubrication" service) that comes up around your second oil change. My brakes were pulsating, etc. at various speeds after only about 12,000 miles. They said they had to grind the rotors. The same issue occurred again in the low/mid 20,000 mile range and they basically told me there was nothing they could do so I should just drive with them like that. My overall sense is that they just do not want to honor any warranty work unless they are pushed very hard to do so. I finally went to Valley Honda In Aurora/Naperville after my wife and I had very positive experience there with her Honda CRV Purchase. Valley Honda replaced the rotors under warranty in less than 2 hours. I wouldn't bother wasting my time (or money) with McGrath ever again. I was a first time car buyer and did a lot of research on both cars and dealerships around the chicagoland area. I was weary of going to this dealership because of all the poor reviews its received, but I am super happy I gave them a chance! I knew which car I wanted and the price I wanted to pay for the car, from all my research I did. I was lucky enough to work with JORDAN BROWN, who is an excellent salesman. I told him that I was returning to school and would be commuting about 60 miles a day, so I would need a reliable long lasting car. I was in-between two cars which was a hyundai elantra and the honda civic. After the test drive, I was pretty set on the civic but told him the excellent deal hyundai gave me. In my opinion, I think Hondas are a better built car than hyundai so I didn't mind paying a little bit more, but Jordan was extremely close to coming to the price I wanted to pay for the car (only $50 difference, plus threw in a couple extras accessories) After working with Jordan, I worked with their finance department, and had the pleasure to work with KEVIN and he was able to get me a great APR rate for a first time buyer. I was comfortable working with these two associates over at Mcgrath Honda in Elgin and never felt pressured at all. It was really a very smooth experience for me and did very little haggling, since they were able to work with what I wanted and the price I wanted it for. I am absolutely IN LOVE with my car and extremely happy with everything! The dealer itself is very nice and well kept but some of the people are just rude and for that reason I wouldn't come back to buy another car. They talk back rudely, instead of nicely explaining their reasoning and why their dealer is better compared to others. Never again would I go back, let alone recommend the place. Customer service to me is everything, even if the deal isn't the best. Top review was first Time I had went... got a call 10 days later to sign some papers they forgot, a guy named DJ extremely rude, demanding for me to go that day. I told him I lived an hour away and couldn't just leave. After feeling threatened I went, only to find out it was to sign a new contract. At %21 interest. He lied and tried to make it seem it would be better for me in the long run using false information. After he did the math in front of me, he realized how wrong he was. %15 interest doesn't come close to what I'll have to pay with %21. I owe about $10,000 more on a used 2010 Honda Pilot, A total scam. At first I had warranty on everything and gap insurance for a payment of $396, in the new contract it'll be $498 for the same thing. He gave me the B.S. that I'll have peace in mind if I kept the warranty. Ya what peace in mind? That I could have gotten a brand new car for what I'll be paying for an old used car??? Refused to take the car back or at least let me trade it in for a new car and make it worth it. Since it wasn't my fault the bank didn't accept the loan. With only gap insurance I'll pay around $435 a month. It has been by far the worst dealer experience I have ever had. I know for a fact I could have gotten a better deal somewhere else. Took almost 2 hours for an oil change. Had an appointment and arrived 15 mins early. Didn't matter. Then had exorbitant prices for service that my car needed. Also per the paperwork they gave me my in cabin air filter needed to be replaced. Not true since we just replaced it ourselves last month. But they charge $64.99 plus tax to do that so I'm sure that's why they put it there. Just bananas. Have purchased 2 cars here but will no longer utilize their service department or get my next car there. read more

I tried calling to see how much it would cost to have a keyless remote and remote starter replaced. The parts department was very nice and helpful. They had to transfer me to another department to answer one of my questions and someone named Dana answered. She was incredibly rude, kept interrupting me when I was talking, and obviously did not want to help in any way. Not to mention the 600% markup on a remote stater fob that would total $1000 just to replace a remote starter and keyless entry fob. DO NOT GO HERE. THEY ADVERTISE BAIT CARS THAT DON'T EXIST JUST TO GET YOU THERE. Don't think - "yeah there are a lot of bad reviews, but some good ones also, nothing will go wrong for me, and they have the best deal I can find." That is what I thought until I got burned by Mcgrath Honda and Jason Bersowski - an internet salesman. DO NOT GO HERE After talking to Jason for almost a week I told him myself and my pregnant wife were going to make the 4.5 hour trip to buy the car pending a condition inspection. Every thing was in place for us to buy the car until Jason informed me (when we were 30 minutes away) that someone had taken the car on an extended test drive. Then when we were 10 minutes away I was told by Jason that the car had just been sold. Bull S***. Then the said " I told you to give me a down payment-remember" BULL S***. He never said that because I would remember, and I would never give a down payment to hold a car anyways. Especially to a shady jerk like Jason. I then had some choice words for Jason and turned the car around. Bull S***. It is clear that he was lying to us the entire time and just put that car out there as a bait car. So we wasted 9 hours driving, with my pregnant wife, and had to make baby sitting arrangements for our other 2 kids - and we got nothing. There are several other reviews with the exact same story. Great car. Decent deal. Abominable follow-up service. Was told SO MANY different stories about the check I was to receive in "a couple of days " (it's now been two weeks). Salesman Kevin Schwartz told me he would be there at 9am and I could see him to get the check. Oops--he's not there. After 45 minutes of shrugging and lack of knowledge about my check, was told it was "in the mail". Now, I am sure I will see the check eventually, but I take issue with the amount of placating lies delivered. Certainly reinforces the stereotype of car salesmen. Drove in with a faulty turn signal, had to threaten police to have it TOWED back to my house as it was not drive able...yes...you read that correctly. These scam artists wanted $2,000.00 and change to repair a faulty turn signal. I had zero time to deal with this and figured it would be a quick fix. They called and told me that the van is now ready to "burst into flames" as the circuit is smoking, and now it's not drive-able...the short version is the person we were dealing with was fired, no one could call me with a status, and they initially wouldn't let me tow it out of their incompetent hands. I threatened to call the Elgin Police to help me tow my own car back out of that bastion of incompetence to find out most of the internal electrical cabin electrical is disconnected. For about $200 in parts, I 100% fixed the van for what McGrath Honda was trying to tell me was over $2,000 with 8 hours of work....yeah...go to hell. I should dispute their "diagnostics" charge and send them the $100.00 tow bill and demand they pay it. You couldn't make this up. From customer service, to being honest, or properly qualified to fix your vehicle, they are an absolute abomination of a dealership. I should seriously send the Honda head office a letter on this complete failure of service (with saved voice messages for proof). In retrospect, I'm lucky as I've been a hands on degreed engineer for 25 years so troubleshooting and repair come easy, not available time I'm afraid. But what about anyone who doesn't have the knowhow, skill, nor tooling to do their own work? Can you just IMAGINE the amount of extra work that is quoted and done at the expense of the customer? It literally enrages me that this kind of thing happens to people who work for a living only to be cheated out of their money. Pathetic...and Yelp won't allow 0 stars, so I have to give 1. My wife and I set up a test drive appointment for a certified used Honda Fit for Saturday. Before making the trip, we call to confirm that the car is still available and are told it is. Despite there being several Honda dealerships near me, we make the 45 min drive as Elgin had the only blue 2018 EX around. We get there and are told by the General Sales Manager, Andrew that "it sold an hour ago." I know it takes longer than an hour to go through the sale and no one told us it was sold when we called before driving in (less than an hour ago). I don't see anyone else around the car. We humor him anyway and tell him specifically what we're looking for and he sends a salesman out to test drive something different. We immediately walked out the door. Andrew chases us down and stops us in the parking lot, apologizes, and promises to call us back that day when he checks his inventory options. We never received a call. On top of that, the car is still on their website tricking people to come in. Pretty clear bait and switch. Definitely not going back there to buy. And I'd recommend everyone stay away. McGrath Honda of Elgin fits the dishonest car salesman stereotype you grew up hearing horror stories about. Avoid unless you like wasting your time. read more

Took my car in for repair, and $100 cash was stolen out of my console. Not smart of me to have forgotten to remove it before dropping off the vehicle, but dishonest on their part to take valuables out of a car you're working on. I sent an email to let them know and got zero response after several days (they did, however manage to send me a marketing email in that time). I wasn't even expecting them to replace the money--after all, how would you even know for sure who took it, and how could they be sure I was telling the truth? But, at least some sort of acknowledgement or even an insincere "we'll look into it" would have been something. I have no complaints on the actual work they did so far, but obviously I won't be a repeat customer, and I'd urge anyone going in for service to make sure you remove anything of value before bringing in your vehicle for service. read more

I would not recommend having your car serviced here. Service was slow, everyone and everything is completely unorganized and it seems no one has a clue what they're doing. Took 25-30 minutes to get processed even though I had an appointment. I had to call them almost 12 hours later and the Service Advisor had left without leaving any notes or having a tech look at my car. 36 hours later and all they did was put new wiper blades on it. Not sure what the McGraths think they're doing but they clearly have zero clue how to run a service department. The only positive experience I had was with an Asst. manager named Brian who was the only one who seemed to care about me or my vehicle. I did the math and I am never choosing McGrath. read more

Bought a used Pilot from another dealer (Acura dealership) who failed to include the locking lug nut key. Scott, the customer service manager, searched through there spare stock of lug keys, found the matching one and gave it free of charge! My goal was to trade in a Pilot lease for an Odyssey lease. I reached out to the sales person via phone and email to save time and get beyond the back and forth. They did not want to talk numbers until I came in. This was strike one. I visited the store and selected the model. The monthly payment they offered was absurdly high, strike two. On top of that, they offered me $3,000 less than my payoff on the Pilot, despite low miles and being in perfect condition, strike three. We were far enough apart on our numbers that I didn't want to waste any more of my time nor theirs. I left disappointed and a waste of a Friday night. The following morning I packed up my three kids and drive 45 minutes away to Schaumburg where I originally leased my Pilot. Unlike Elgin, their initial offer was very close to my target. We got the deal done quickly, for the exact same model and color Odyssey, for $100 less per month. They paid off the balance on Pilot and also included the maintenance package. Elgin called me two days later saying they were able to knock off an additional $20 (from their absurdly high monthly payment). This added insult to injury. Had Elgin been serious about making a sale and started at a reasonable monthly payment, I may have stayed to negotiate. Note their overall review rating is extremely low. Good reason for that. I purchased a Jeep Cherokee through them in 2016. The price was reasonable. The entire process and experience for buying the car was what you would image a typical car purchase would be like. They make you feel stupid and uncomfortable. They try to trick you into spending all this extra money on things you obviously do not need. They kept trying to pressure me to sign the final purchase sheet despite me telling them I was not going to sign anything and regardless the pricing was wrong. I have had nonstop problems since I purchased the vehicle. After bringing it into them several times they took it over to the jeep dealership who determined there was a recall on all 2015 jeep Cherokees. It was "fixed" for several months but recently started having the same issues. When I purchased the vehicle I did not get the interest rate I hoped for but was told by the financial guy that I should make payments for about a year and then come back to talk about refinancing at a lower interest rate. I went back a few weeks ago to meet with a financial person but they directed me to a sales person. When All was said and done they basically could not help me, ran my credit, and tried to convince me to "Walk our today wii a brand new car" I was born at night I was not born last night. Every time I have to deal with this shady place I always feel violated and as if I've been left in a ditch! I only come here because of my extended warranty, otherwise I would stay away from this place like the plague! read more

Gosh, I really wish I could give this place a negative star rating. They are truly horrible here and don't give a crap about you as a customer. Last week, I went in to get a spare key made for my car. Not a huge deal, but I was certainly not greeted correctly when I walked in- just 4 salesmen sitting around chatting, not attentive at all to the people walking in the door. When I was finally directed to the parts department and told them I needed a spare key for my car, they told me it would be $75 for the key (was previously told on the phone $70) and $75 for the programming fee. Let me also mention, the guys who "helped" me all had the attitudes as if their job was not a job but a fun hangout sesh with their buddies. They acted like I was the stupid lowly customer and I should be so lucky to even have their attention for a moment. When I finally told them that I would rather not have it programmed that day, they said they would give me a valet key so I could get into my doors at least. I said that would be fine. Now keep in mind, I'm not a key expert so they could have handed me any key and told me is was a valet key and I would have trusted them. So after a while, when I received a key (being told OVER AND OVER it was a valet key) and put it in my door, it didn't work. They then went back and fixed it and I was so fed up at that point, I got out of there as quickly as possible. When I got home, I began to call other Honda dealerships to see their prices on programming the key to see if I could find a cheaper price. I got a hold of MotorWerks of Barrington (FANTASTIC PLACE BTW! I will be writing a 5-star review for them after this) and was told since I had a valet key already (or so I thought) they could program it for $65. I made an appointment for the next day. When I got there and pulled the key out of my purse, I was immediately informed that it was not a valet key. The gentleman helping me even took me to the parts department and they showed me what a valet key actually looks like. When I asked the price on it (because obviously that is what I originally wanted), they quoted me $24. So freaking McGrath Honda of Elgin is RIPPING PEOPLE OFF for over $50 for a dang key! Moving on to today when I called and spoke to the parts manager about getting a refund on this key since I was LIED to about what it actually was. I called and was connected to their parts manager and after leaving a voicemail received a call back a few minutes later. This guy (who mind you wasn't even there when the original situation occurred) then proceeded to ARGUE with me for 7 minutes about what happened, telling me "my guys wouldn't say that" and "well, that's not what this paperwork says"-because right, as if your guys are going to note that they lied to a customer on some paperwork. In the continuation of arguing with me, he let it slip that the key I apparently got "only cost like $11, right?" UM NO. Try $21. You OVERCHARGED me for a key and just let it slip that you screwed me over. He finally said he would give me a refund as long as he got the key back. I told him to be honest, I would prefer not to because frankly the people at his establishment are shady as hell and I don't trust that they will destroy my key and not use it to break into my car at some point seeing as they have my address. Now, I'll admit that may be a bit dramatic, but frankly, I don't trust these people with one fiber of my being. When I told him that his guys had terrible attitudes and needed to work on their customer service all he said was that he didn't know what I wanted him to do about it and he needed to know if I was going to want the refund or not. I very reluctantly agreed to go back to give him the key and get my money back. I will be going there in the next couple days to deal with this. But for real, DO NOT go here. They need a major customer service overhaul and you will walk away upset you went there if you did. On the other hand, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND MotorWerks of Barrington. If you are bored and want to go to see why car dealers and the process of buying a car has such a horrible reputation visit these jokers. I've been buying cars for 40 years from Mercedes and Jaguar to Chevrolet, Pontiac, Toyota, Ford, Dodge, Volvo, and more that I'm forgetting. This was by far the worst experience I've ever had. They repeatedly tried to bait and switch on the sale. After deciding to not fall for their shenanigans I made the deal. When I went to pick up my car "certified " I found body trim damage that was so visible that I was almost caught off guard. They agreed to order the part and replace it. When I got a confirmation call that the part was ready I was told that I was coming in for differential repairs. The woman who called literally wanted to argue with me. Transfer of my special license plates was screwed up and they ordered me new plates. If I was given free oil changes I wouldn't go back. For any of you old timers that remember the used car lots on Western Avenue...at least they kissed you while they were screwing you. I would have gladly paid $1000 more for a positive experience. There are some really good dealers and salespeople out there. These jokers are the poster child of "run..don't walk." Unfortunately this experience casts a black cloud over the entire McGrath dealerships. The one star is for the one service person I dealt with when I came in goes to Jerry. They damaged my car and then asked me not to come back. I purchased my car though this dealership. I've been taking my car there for car washes ever since I purchased it. The gentleman who washed my car kindly asked if I would like him to vacuum out the interior (I had no idea they'd even do that). I accepted and when I got back in my car I had 3 big, noticable scratches on my dashboard. I noticed it once i got on the expressway. I called and complained and brought it back in the following day. It was pretty much my word against his that he did the damage. He acknowledged that he vacuumed the dashboard as well. I talked to the floor manager and she was extremely rude and kept asking me what I wanted from her. She stated they could not get the scratches out and would not replace the whole dash for 3 scratches. So I bring my car in and leave with scratches and the female manager treated me like I was wrong for being upset. She even told me never to come back there again, even though I am awarded free car washes since I purchased my car there. I call the general manager, explained the whole thing to him, he sounded sympathetic and said he would look into it and call me back. That was over a month ago. I've called three more times since then and left messages but nothing. The customer service there is completely unprofessional. The management there is beyond disrespectful. read more

I recommend Carlos Chavez as salesmen. I spent a year, on and off, researching used cars. Trip after trip into the dealership. He was patient, and I test drove literally (at least) 10 different cars. He followed up a few times via phone and most importantly....never one time pressured me. I ended up buying used. While the McGrath 1 year deal thingy me bob is nice, it does not mean much for me as I will be past 12K miles within 6 months so McGrath Advantage was not a consideration. Yes, "Business Manager" pushed for "extras". Ummm...that is his job.... and IMO just an unfortunate aspect of buying used or new from dealer. He makes up margin in aftermarket adds, but I was paying cash and just kept saying no. One input to Mr. McGrath: Add another Business Manager or retool your process for this aspect of your car buying experience. I accept that after I concur to pay you for said car that I am required to "sit in a small cloying office, being filmed, while your Dealership tries sell me adds that I am not interested in". What is not acceptable is making me wait over an hour after I agreed to the purchase, and after the Business Manager told me it would be only 15 minutes to get into the aforementioned cloying office so that I may "be filmed, while you try to sell me adds I do not want". Overall I am happy: Got one owner, clean 2012 Honda Accord EX, with low miles at over $1K below Edmunds Retail price and only slightly above Private party value from a salesman who never pressured me. I got 15% off routine maintenance for the life of the car and dealership is right on my way to and from work. Worked great for me. Good luck if you are searching for car! read more

I have been going to McGrath Honda since my first 1995 Civic when they were back on Route 19. I always raved about the service to family and friends. Seems things have changed: There are plenty of other warnings about the service department here so I'll try to keep it brief. Brought our van in with an issue. We were told that it would cost ~ $2,100.00 to repair. I questioned the rep. about the cost of one of the repairs. I wanted to know the price of the part and how much time was being added for the work. I was told the part was $614.00 and the work was going to be 1 1/2 hours for $231.00. This did not include being told that we had a major oil leak and would need a new oil pump. With no oil leaking on our floor, and no missing oil from my engine, I figured the problem was the $600 part. I went online and found that Autozone had the part for $399. I bought the part, watched a Youtube video, and was able to complete the installation of the part, in my 20 degree garage in about 45 minutes. I can honestly say that I could now do that job, easily, in 20 minutes, as I'm sure a trained Honda mechanic could. Car runs great again and I saved well over $1000. Beware as it seems this service department likes to add jobs on and overcharge for jobs that do need to be done. Never again! 1/9/18 In response to the comment from Honda- My last name is Toren. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!!!!!!!!!!!!! Brought my 2014 Accord in because engine light came on and it wouldn't stay running. Was told that the timing chain was off 7 teeth, the valves were bent and i needed a new engine and to come down right away to pay for one or get it financed. When i wasn't approved for financing they kept insisting that i could have someone co-sign for me and could email them the info. Given i didnt have the 4K they wanted for an engine i quickly shopped auto mechanics and all of them said my car should still be under warranty. One auto shop told me to contact McGrath in St. Charles and i did. Talked to the service manager and the first thing he said was my car was under warranty and to tow it to him and he will take care of it. Went back to Elgin McGrath and told them i was towing it to St. Charles. Service person became rude and said "why, you are going to need a new engine and you are going to get it covered under warranty, and when I end up having to put a new engine in the call him and apologize and tell him he was right" Well guess what!!!!!!! When St. Charles McGrath looked at it they found the following. Time chain was only off 4 teeth NO BENT VALVES And got it covered under warranty!!!!!!!! Engine was fine, just need a new timing system. So McGrath in Elgin flat out lied to me about the problem with my car, never mentioned a warranty and only wanted to make money off of me in a desperate time. read more

My wife and I recently purchased our first Honda in February. We are so very happy with our new CRV but even so with the experience. To preface, this purchase came about from a vehicle accident that totaled our car. It was a stressful time being haggled by so many places until we came here. It was by far the best experience either of us have had at a dealership visiting McGrath Honda in Elgin. We worked very closely with Jim Diller. So honest, patient, courteous, polite and friendly, also funny. Just extremely enjoyable to deal with, he didn't waste our time and was very honest. We came into the dealership to simply test drive a Honda which we weren't even seriously considering but I'm so glad we did. Jim really helped make that happen and the sales manager Jim Martinez was equally as great. My wife and I are so grateful for the excellent service, respect of our time and funds as well as the follow up after the purchase.
