Odd Star mechanic there. Twice now - short call last week - then just now ( hoping to reach the woman who runs office) just trying to ask a basic simple question about "ANY upfront fee for smog diagnostic" - trying to just ask "how much is it" - the posted flat rate price - he has gone off on me on a tangent whiney rant about "his value for his expertise, DMV procedures, his time is worth money, etc. " Feels like I am getting the tail end of a left over rant meant for a previous customer. All I wanted someone to do was tell me a) price, b) is this included in overall cost of repair or a separate fee I pay first ( vehicle qualified for state grant for smog repair). That's it. Should be like a 30 second question- right? Twice I am getting his whiney rant!!! He needs to stay away from the phone and let the nice female office person take the calls. He hurts the business. I just cancelled the appointment. If I am having this much trouble getting ONE PRICE QUOTE for something that should be a flat rate charge, and learning if that is something state pays or I do ( ie several additional hundred dollar charge at Christmas time kind of matters!) -- I can only imagine how difficult he would be to discuss things with later. I am left with a "no confidence " vote on this mechanic. He seems direly in need of a vacation and has burn out. read more

Chris H probably had a honda truck and didnt know it and I wouldnt blame the shop for turning him away. Go to Mcnally with real issues. I had some crazy smog issues with my car's CAT and dan was seriously able to fix this by completing a drive cycle that involved him driving my car around at various speeds until the O2 sensor kicked into gear. I went to two other mechanics who wouldnt do that. not only did it fix my issue, it saved me from purchasing a new O2 sensor or even a new CAT. He's got a good staff and he's honest. he gets really busy but I wouldnt be deterred. for that type of honesty and expertise, I'm willing to work around his schedule because you honestly can't find a mechanic like dan anymore. read more

Well, when your on vacation sometimes other things take a vacation, such as the starter in your car. Well, when that happens you have to take it someplace to get it fixed, otherwise it stays on vacation. Dan is the main man and he knows his business. The wife and I have taken our vehicles here from simple oil changes to brakes being repaired to now, the starter being repaired in our car. Dan always tries to make sure that he actually is fixing the problem, the main problem, not a quick fix like some mechanics. He will also give cheaper recommendations, when he thinks that they could fix the problem rather than go to the more expensive. The best part about Dan is that he is honest and always willing to work with you. When you have a vehicle in need, he is the man to take it too. Dan is a great guy. He has many years of experience and he is a straight shooter. He will apply those many years of experience to your auto problem and tell you what it will run. Don't be surprised when that expertise allows him to see down the road to problems you are going to have and suggest that while he is doing the work you might as well fix another item that is nearly worn out. WOW!!! My check engine light came on about two days ago. Today was my only day off so I called different shops explaining my situation. I told them all that I wanted a simple diagnostic to see what was wrong with my jeep and that we would go from there. I called one mechanic in Chatsworth and he quoted me $110 for the diagnostic test. I then called another in Chatsworth and they quoted me $65. I then accidentally called an auto body shop and they referred me to McNally's in Chatsworth. I like keeping my business local which is why I keep mentioning the town I live in. I stated my problem to Dan and he said bring it right in...FREE OF CHARGE. ....I was amazed that there are still honest people out there. This place is a joke. Tried going there for a simple alignment and tire balance. Dan, the "main man" there immediately told us he would not work on our truck. Its brand new and basically stock with slightly larger tires. He saw it from the office, asked us if that was our "Toyota,"(its a Chevy) outside. He said it just wasn't worth it and that its too hard to work on. He wouldn't even balance the wheels and tires because they are too big... They are the same size as most truck tires. He kept coming up with excuses and couldn't even recommend a tire shop nearby that could work on it. Complete wast of time and he was rude about the whole thing. Seems like a dick as many others have mentioned. The only reason for 2 stars is the girl working the counter seemed nice and was decently cute. Would not recommend this place to anyone read more

McNally Automotive is an auto repair and smog station in Chatsworth, California. My experience with Dan was great. I had my car towed to his shop based on a friend's recommendation. Dan's first concern was that the car might have unseen damage due to overheating, later he charged me $50 less than his repair estimate. The timing belt had broken, and he explained that he would stop the job and charge me actual labor if he found other damage that would increase the repair bill after opening up the engine. I found Dan's explanation of his concerns and billing to be very honest ways of treating the customer. After the repair was completed, the car ran just fine. In dealing with Dan, I found that he took the time to answer my questions, and explain everything I asked about my car. I am always curious about cars and appreciate learning a bit more about them whenever I can. Dan didn't try to sell me any other repairs. He doesn't talk much, but every now and then, he cracks a funny joke. I have also had another car smogged by Dan, and will not hesitate to take my car back to him. read more

I've brought our four cars to McNally for about five or six years now, and was never disappointed. Dan is fixed in his ways, as if he can't do a professional job for a reasonable price, he'd rather not start. I figured that out. Just today he repaired my wife's car which had failed a SMOG test not due to emissions but due to OBD-II computer codes indicating two failures in control systems. He was very conservative as always in discussing this, and gave an original estimate that was pretty high, but that was before a thorough diagnosis. Later, he gave a revised estimate a bit lower, as he diagnosed the problems. When we picked up the car, all was fixed and well, and the charge was much lower than even the revised estimate. He "guesses high," and then brings it down when he digs into it. I brought my daughter's VW Jetta there a couple of years ago, and I know Dan doesn't like VWs much. But he knew me and was willing to work on it. She was in "limp in" mode due to an OBD-II indication the transmission had failed. She couldn't get it above 2nd gear (automatic) and the engine was revving 4000 rpm to just go 25 mph. TWO different local VW dealers diagnosed the problem as being "you need a new transmission," and the cost would be $2000 to $4000 depending on a rebuild or a new one. Dan took some time with this. He can be painstakingly slow, but he's a good diagnostician. He did a lot of computer lookups and made some measurements, and figured the only problem was really a relay which costs about $25. He ordered the relay, and I kept my fingers crossed. It was an SSR (solid state relay) which just plugs in. He replaced it, reset the computer, and the car was fine for the next 50,000 miles. No problems at all: The problem really was a $25 relay, but the VW dealers didn't find this. I'd recommend McNally to anyone, if they have a car Dan is willing to work on. He may reject some, but I think that's based on a lot of experience and possibly not having adequate specialized instrumentation which may be required for some vehicles. I'm an engineer, but not a mechanic; and every time I visit Dan for service, I learn something new. He explains stuff to the most finite detail. read more

We came to this shop walked-in and Dan was able to accommodate us right away. I was worried my car will fail as the engine light has been on for a while. Dan did an initial test and he was very honest telling me that there are 2 codes warning and it might fail the test. He kept on updating me with the status of the test. My car passed the test! Called these guys to see if they could do a wheel bearing on a 2002 Toyota Tacoma it is 4wd and was told they could probably do it but weren't sure on labor as it 20 years old. No problem drove it over with the wheel bearing coming apart not their fault I don't own a tow truck but alas I do not, anyway get over there and Dan tells me they want to pass on the job (at this point hasn't actually even seen the truck) because I told him I know my cv axels are worn out and unless he can get me HD cv boot axles I'm going to do them my self at my shop I just need the truck safely drivable. It really seemed like he didn't want to work on the truck simply do to it's age and perhaps a lack of Tacoma knowledge even though I had explained the suspension is new all the ball joints and tie rod ends are new the rear leafs are new the wheels and tires are new and the truck has been incredibly well maintained for having 280k on it. Only been here one other time for a smog on a really clean 2001 bmw and the whole time Dan kept reassuring me it was going to pass I mean I appreciate that but I had checked the code and monitors before I brought it there otherwise I would have fixed it... not sure if he has Aspergers or is just kinda strange but either strongly do not recommend these guys also the two times I've been there I've spent a good 10 minutes waiting at the counter before anyone's showed up in the office so bring a good book. read more

First off, I'll have you know that I'm typing this middle fingers... I have a 1970 Volkswagen Bug (a very common and easy to work on car) which just happened to have its oil pan come loose yesterday. I didn't notice this and when I came out of a place I was I found all the oil to have leaked out of my car and onto the pavement. First thing I did was call AAA and they routed me to a certified mechanic of theirs, but after doing a quick search on Yelp and finding that McNally Automotive had so many great reviews, I decided instead to go there. Boy, was that a mistake!! As the AAA tow truck pulled up and started to unload my car, Dan, the main man, came up to me and asked if that was my car. I responded with a yes. He then went on to explain very rudely and bluntly that he refused to work on it and personally hated to work on them. He said that even if he had all the parts and knowhow to fix it, he wouldn't. He went in to explain however that he would charge me just for keeping my car on his property. My car is dead; what the hell else was I supposed to do? He then told me that I'd better catch the AAA guy before he left or I'd be "screwed". If he couldn't work on it, he could have at least had the decency to refer me to someone who would. Best way to describe this man, is that he is a dick. A real dick. If you happen to have a car on his "list" it's probably best to avoid this place. read more

Had to have an oil change back in September .The tech at that time said on my next oil change I probably will need rear brakes. When I went to change oil elsewhere, I discovered that in their previous oil change they removed synthetic oil put on in 1 month previously (1000 miles) & replaced it with regular oil!! Not recommended for hybrids. Either they were not paying attention to the tag in the car and the quality of oil or they were just making some extra money. Neither is good read more
