4 stars because the line is always so long and they missed my order but usually it's pretty efficient and I love getting the mixed soft serve. My favorite combo is strawberry and chocolate! Super simple concept but they do it very well. It's a cute drive through setting and there's a park close by too to enjoy your sweet treat! read more

The greatest soft serve of my life... the freshest, creamiest most perfect soft serve ever! I lived in Wisconsin for four years and the dairy I had there didn't beat this. The drive-in experience is so endearing and quick, definitely do that if you can over waiting in line outside. The orange and vanilla (creamsicle) was off the charts. I got cake batter (pretty good) because they didn't have chocolate, but I'm coming for chocolate when they've got it. 5 stars!!!! read more

Meadowlark ice-cream is our go to dessert place for light and creamy ice cream they offer. It's like visiting a heritage store, they are in business for years now. It's not a sit and eat place. Most people prefer line up in cars and there are enough employees to take car orders. High quality ice cream, they have their own dairy and sell fresh milk too. Excellent soft serve ice cream for the price. The line was long, but it went by super fast. Main Street was closed so we opted to park and walk rather than drive around for drive thru. I got a small chocolate and vanilla ($3), and it was delicious. read more

Just go to when passing through Pleasanton to fulfill your sweet cravings. It's a drive thru convenience shop serving you the sweet treats and quick goods. Medium is a good size for me. I usually get the chocolate and vanilla swirl. Lately they've been having the pineapple flavor and it is really fulfilling my Disneyland dolewhip craving. It's definitely cheaper and refreshing. It's located right across a park so come by after your picnic! read more

Drive-thru for some ice cream swirls and groceries. You're also able to walk over to order your ice cream. The staff here are so friendly and patient. They offer some special and limited flavors as well. We ordered the vanilla chocolate swirl and the vanilla strawberry swirl. The ice cream was light and creamy. The line wraps around the block and yet somehow they get you in and out in 5 minutes. I've never eaten at an establishment that runs so efficiently. It was easily some of the best and most flavorful soft serve I've had. I only wish they had more flavor options. They even offer a slushee + soft serve option they call the Diablo! I looked into some of the history behind Meadowlark Dairy and it turns out it was originally founded by immigrant dairy farmers from Holland. Much of my Mom's family came to California from Holland and have worked their whole lives as dairy farmers so I thought the history behind this drive-thru was neat. After getting your order, it is fun to sit across the street at the park and watch cars in the drive thru attempt to cut each other in line! I guess I can't really blame them for being impatient. read more

Meadowlark dairy is a place that will instantly become a family favorite the second you take the first lick of soft serve. Our family has been coming here for 25+ years and have so many memories over delicious frosties. Over the years they've added many more flavor combinations and an amazing addition is that they have lots of dairy free flavors!! You can check their Instagram for the most recent flavor options and they do a great job of indicating which flavors are dairy free, lactose free, vegan, etc. Generally the fruit flavors are dairy free -- and are DELICIOUS. Think dole whip at Disneyland (pineapple, strawberry, orange, etc.) If you don't have dietary restrictions a creamsicle combo of fruit + vanilla is divine. While fancy ice cream stores have their place, there is nothing quite like the simplicity of the drive through dairy. I hope to continue coming here with my kids for many many years to come! read more

I had bookmarked meadowlark dairy for the longest time and I finally had the time to stop by the dairy for some awesome soft serve. I drove up in the evening and saw there's a drive thru as well as a walk up line. I decided to walk up so that I could comfortably enjoy my ice cream. I decided on a strawberry/vanilla swirl. Wow, the ice cream was so smooth and creamy. The strawberry wasn't the artificial strawberry flavor but was a bit sour. I also got a gallon of ice cream to go (I thought that it was made fresh, but realized it was from Crystal Creamery). The almonds in my mocha almond fudge were stale so I wouldn't recommend the pre-packed ice cream. Just stick to the fresh soft serve. Definitely coming back to try the other soft serve flavors! read more

It's a crime that this soft serve gem is further away from the silicon valley bubble but if you make the trip to Pleasanton, then this is a must try! Super affordable soft serve is the name of the game and how can you resist when prices are only ($3,$3.25,$3.50) for sizes Small, Medium, and Large. We got all small sizes and even then the soft serve came out in generous portions. You can get them in cones or in a cup. My favorite was definitely the orange+vanilla swirl which so heavily reminded me of those old school Flintstone push pop orange cream bars. So nostalgic and so good! They also do seasonal flavors and the one going on now during Summer is Pineapple (Dole whip) which was also fantastic. They have Drive thru and walk-ins but we prefer to walk-in because you can enjoy the soft serve immediately at the park/bench area right across the street. read more

Meadowlark may be Pleasanton's tourist trap, but it's a well deserved title for such a place regardless! As someone who deeply loves and appreciates soft serves, I can honestly say this place offers the creamiest and fun-flavored soft serves in the Bay at excellent prices and size options! Its location and venue is a fun little spot, and I really enjoy the in-person or drive thru options (it's not just variety, but also the experience - for some reason it reminds me of waiting for a ride at an amusement park). There are seasonal flavors that a person can always look forward to as well! My personal favorite here is the orange vanilla swirl! SO SOFT AND TASTY! read more

While driving through the adorable downtown Pleasanton, one will run into a traffic jam of 12 cars or more in the center turn lane. No, it's not a traffic jam, it's a LINE to the Meadowlark Dairy! You will see a flurry of activity, with young staffers taking orders and directing traffic like real pros. It's far busier than an In-and Out Burger drive thru at dinner time! We decided to walk up, my husband started a timer, and after 21 minutes, he came away with a shockingly delicious 50/50 orange/vanilla cone. It looked beautiful and was delicious! They have such a wonderful spot, like a rural dairy and grocery market in the middle of downtown. We loved it, and so does everyone else. Vegan options were totally available! read more

I haven't had ice cream in a long time in despite the rain, I had to go after a nice lunch date in downtown Pleasanton. The simple flavors are best and I got vanilla. Such a quaint downtown Pleasanton ice cream shop! It's literally soft serve (and some pantry staples like milk, eggs, yeast, etc) but it is super tasty and amazing! They come up with holiday flavors like egg nog or seasonal flavors like pineapple eerily similar to the Dole whip at Disneyland. The prices are staggered by 25 cents, so I pretty much always get the large since it's only 50 cents more! There's two options to getting your soft serve, either drive through or walk up. I always walk up since I normally take a stroll on Main Street. The kids working there are pretty efficient and lines move quickly. Must visit if you're visiting or just because you're craving some quality soft serve! read more

I always need to stop by anytime I'm going through Pleasanton. Such a gem in this city and love that it's teenagers mainly running such an old beauty that attracts any body who comes by. Lines for both car and outside move fairly quickly since there's typically many working at a time. Will forever love my chocolate/vanilla swirls!! Literally one of the best soft serve ice cream in town. Note that the line can get quite long especially on weekends and summer time and although most of the workers seem like teenagers or college kids they are pretty quick and friendly. I ordered a pineapple vanilla swirl and my husband ordered a chocolate vanilla. Note shown in the pics are my kids chocolate and my sons vanilla chocolate swirl (note the workers accidentally forgot to add my sons strawberry scooped but once we mentioned it they politely and quickly fixed the problem without any fuss) The ice cream is delicious and the small single scoop is more than enough for even an adult read more

This ice cream is creamy and very fun to have. The line is literally around the corner both walk ups and drive thru, but please be patient and wait. You will not regret it. Plus the lines move quickly as they have a lot of staff working different lines. The flavors are a fun twist to the classic vanilla, chocolate and swirl. During my trip, they had pistachio, chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla available. The swirl was chocolate and pistachio (highly recommended ). The strawberry was tart , and the vanilla was creamy. My favorite was the chocolate and pistachio swirl though! Flavors change, so if they have any unique ones I recommend trying them. Also, this is a mini-mart, so if you need eggs, milk or snacks, you can also pick them up here. Best part is that you stay in your car! I ordered 7 medium ice creams total and spent around $20! 5 super happy kiddos for that price! I'll take it any day! Hands down our favorite frozen treat! Love the consistent friendly and fast service, even on the busiest hottest summer days when all the lines of humans and cars are wrapped around! The place is also just so darn cute, with its old timey feels, succulent wall, and umbrella shades! I'm normally a chocolate girl, but the vanilla is just the best here, so creamy and rich! I usually do a swirl of vanilla and one of the rotating seasonal flavor, and I have yet to be disappointed! Meadowlark is a must on warm summer nights - there isn't anything quite like ending the day with a refreshing sweet treat from this place! Their soft serve is one of the best in the bay; you'll commonly see cars wrapped around the block to get into the drive thru - and for good reason. Their soft serve is rich and creamy, almost like there's a weight to it, but the quality is unmistakeable. No matter which flavor you get (and there are some fun seasonal ones like watermelon, orange twist..etc.) it'll end up delicious. Although the line is long, service is pretty quick: I typically find physically standing in line to be a bit shorter than the drive thru and will usually be about a 20 min wait during busy hours. read more

History

Established in 1919.

Foothill Road was the original spot of the Meadowlark Dairy, built in 1919, it was the first certified dairy in the state of California. Meadowlark Dairy on Foothill Road was built on the original spot of the Ohlone Indians and home of the first Adobe building in the tri-valley built in 1846. Francisco Solano Alviso Adobe now a park that is a representation from the Indian era to the Spanish Period to the Dairy period of California. In 1968 moved the processing plant to 57 West Neal Street where it still stands today. Two decades ago drive-through dairies flourished in the Bay Area. Today there are just a few left in all of California and one is right here in downtown Pleasanton. Meadowlark Dairy is Pleasanton's link with yesteryear, a throwback to a kinder, gentler era when personal service was paramount.

Not nut based. But they do contain soy.

Is your soft serve ice cream certified Gluten Free for those with ciliac?

You can always ask your server but everything is gluten free except for the cone. Only once have we had a flavor with gluten but we were not allowed to stack it with any other flavor. Or just let your server know you have celiac and you cant have…

Does your soft serveice cream contain gelatin or any other animal by products? Is it vegetarian friendly?

They for sure have some vegan flavors, mostly the fruity ones like strawberry, orange, pineapple, etc. Flavors rotate based on availability but they always have at least a couple vegan ones. The vanilla and chocolate are dairy/milk based though.

We have a severe peanut allergy in the family. Is the soft serve peanut-free? Do any flavors with peanuts share soft serve lines? Thank you!

We do not have any flavors that have nuts. So they are nut free! Just make sure you tell your server you have a severe allergy and they can assure you as well.

All of our packed ice creams are made by crystal creamery in modesto.

That said, the soft serve was absolutely delicious and definitely the highlight of our visit. The ube and milk tea flavors paired really well together, and I'd recommend ordering that swirl if you stop by. Overall, there are a few areas that could be improved, but the quality of the soft serve made it worth the visit.

She took a picture of all of it for her records. They don't open until 11am on Sundays, but she said she would come in early in the morning that day so I could pick up the cake before the party at 9am. I really appreciate this top-notch customer oriented service. I can't wait to see the final product. I know they're gonna do a great job!
