Our dog died of a respiratory disease at Medvet on New Years Eve 2021. Because Medvet is down to one cardiologist (who was on vacation with no alternative provided by the company), we were forced to pick up our dog after two days of intensive care at Medvet, in order to drive her to a cardiologist in the suburbs, to make sure it was her lungs and not her heart causing the breathing problem (Scans proved it was not her heart). We then returned to the city where our dog's respiratory disease worsened again with fluid in her lungs. The Medvet doctor on call on 12/31/2021 at 1:30AM (we know her name) refused to give her a diuretic injection(Furosemide), which had previously cleared the fluid from her lungs on 12/27 and 12/30. She argued with me on the phone while our dog suffered, and even inferred that she would give the diuretic after all of her outbursts. In the end, she did NOT give our dog the diuretic and our dog suffocated later that morning on fluids in her lungs. We discovered this when we received the last itemized bill. All we needed was her to contact us and let us know the diuretic will not be given, so we could make a decision to put our dog down. But, she never contacted us over the next 5hrs. Medvet Chicago does not have the communication structure or continuity of care to provide quality dog care for critical animals. We have issued a complaint letter to the Illinois State Vet Association and Illinois Vet Licensing & Disciplinary Board. If you need an emergency vet, look to the suburbs (Northfield, Buffalo Grove). read more

Earlier this week my senior pup was showing signs of labored breathing. I tried helping her calm her breathing and gave her medication but noticed no changes, called her vet and they instructed to take her to Medvet. I was very emotional because my gut was telling me the extra time we had asked her to stay with us had reached its limit. While an overwhelming and exhausting experience, we did not feel rushed to make a decision and once we did, our wishes for her passing were all respected. This was my first time ever putting a dog down and I've been terrified of this moment. They moved us to a comfort room, gave us all the time we needed with her before and after, she was held and loved the entire time as she was when she was here with us. I didn't catch the tech at the ends name but I can't thank her enough for her empathy and gentleness. She made sure the last way we saw our girl was in a beautiful state on her bed. She also offered resources. Of everyone we interacted with, she made us feel the most seen. Lastly, I deeply regretted not asking for a paw mold and nearly melted when I saw they included it. Also, we were told her remains would be ready in 2-3 weeks but our girl came back within a few days. Our home isn't as empty now. Thank you. read more

Unfortunately my cat passed away today and when I called the line for assistance the woman did not respond until after I gave my name, and my pets failing condition and she had the nerve to ask me " and what was your question". Been going to this Vet for 7yrs due to a chronic condition for our pet. While the doctors are top notch, the support staff is constantly making mistakes that add frustration and inconvenience to an already stressful and expensive situation. There seems to be a serious lack of attention to detail. Renewing a prescription is always an ordeal. Wrong dosages, wrong pharmacy, calling the wrong people. If there is a way to screw it up, they will find a way to do it. If these tasks aren't handled with care, it makes me wonder what other areas aren't. We have brought these issues up multiple times with the staff and Doctors but the processes don't seem to improve. Consider other options. read more

Honestly, the worst experience at a vet emergency room, my puppy had an accident early in the morning, and I brought her to medvet by 10 am; she was not seen until after 4 pm, she did not receive pain meds until after 7 pm. At that point, the Vet called and said she would probably need surgery without X-rays, claiming that it would be an $8-9k procedure. There is nothing else they can do, very cold and hard to speak with, as they are short and cut you off from speaking. I then spent the next hours calling around with multiple vets and specialists to find other alternatives; everyone said even without seeing the X-rays, we can say it won't be that much. After finding another surgeon and requesting medvet to share the information, they took their time to do that, finally giving information to them at 8:15 pm; additionally, Medvet told me they would not even splint my puppy's leg as the other surgeon suggested since he would not see her until the next day. I'm still waiting to check her out; they are so slow; this is 12 hours later, and mind you, they told us it would take 15 minutes to check out. They put you on hold and claim to call back saying they're so busy, but done seem busy at all. Everyone working is pretty rude here at this location. This emergency vet is a place I would avoid, and I rarely write a review. I have been waiting to get my puppy for over an hour. This place is awful. Worst customer service, I want my dog so she can go. Somewhere to be correctly taken care of for surgery and care. Also incorrectly quoted for prices through the day. This Vet is a money-hungry place of business: no empathy or understanding, just judgment, and rudeness. Stay away from companies so money-hungry. It was a mistake for me to drive all this way for a place that is so uncaring. read more

MedVet has truly gone downhill since moving into their new location. A couple years ago, we took in our 16 year old cat for knee surgery. Everything went great, and we could not have been happier. This summer, she started limping a little on the knee, so we called to see if we could bring her in to see the orthopedic surgeon who did the surgery. We were told she no longer works there, but if it seemed bad enough, to bring our cat to the ER. We agreed and brought her in. 10 hours later, the doctor called to tell us our cat was barely responsive, ataxiated, couldn't walk, couldn't focus, etc. and that we should come and get her so we could bring her home and make her comfortable. We picked up our cat when they discharged her at 2am. Sure enough, she was a shell of her former self. Completely unlike the cat we brought in 12 hours prior. We thought for sure she would die that night. Well, she didn't, and over the next 3 days she just got better. We brought her into our normal vet who said she was fine, and just constipated. Apparently MedVet loaded her up with a bunch of gabapentin before the doctor saw her. And every symptom she described was a side effect of the medicine they gave her. Our cat is fine now, just as good as ever, no thanks to the incompetence at MedVet. Aside from being clueless and careless, the doctor and rest of the staff were cold and uncaring. I brought my precious dog in about a month ago and realized that lack of compassion is the ongoing theme of this hospital. I regret bringing my dog here and I wish I would have taken him somewhere else. The entire time he was being treated, the nurses insisted on putting him down when I kept telling them I wanted to keep fighting for his life. I then had to leave him over night and they said they would call me when/if things got worse, only to receive a phone call informing me that he had already passed away! The reports I then received after he passed were carelessly put together where they accidentally had a different animal patients name instead of mine!!! *DO NOT* bring your animals here if you want them to receive top priority care, they DO NOT specialize in being detail oriented or being compassionate. read more

My Gizmo was taken care of immediately when we came in. He was having difficulty breathing, very bad cough, and went in -in stress. He was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. The social worker(counselor for me) was awesome. He came in the room twice to check up on me. I was an emotional mess. I was shocked to know my baby's condition. He was given medication. If I could give this animal hospital 0 stars, I absolutely would. My dog ingested a bottle cap, and I brought her to MedVet within 20 minutes of the ingestion. I call to do takein, and was told I would be called back by the triage tech on duty. 35 minutes later, a man by the name of James, takes my information, asks the general questions and then tells me that they can bring my dog in now, but she won't be seen by a doctor for SIX hours. I then said "won't it be too late to induce vomiting at that point?" He then says "yes, that is quite possible but we take cases by their severity. I brought my dog here when he was vomiting and had constipation. Showed up and about 5:20 am they said I had to wait for the 6am doc to come in to be seen. Milo vomited about 4 times more while waiting in there lobby and also started slightly urinating and was orange obviously not good. When we saw the doctor around 7am or so at this time routine labs of course was needed. I told the. He has seizures and take medication with stress his seizures get worse. What got me was when they called said he needed an ultrasound and there was a wait and we would not hear until 3pm about his results. Enlarged prostate, uti and hernia. All they gave him was fluids and anti nausea no seizure meds. We received antibiotics and medication I told them an hour or 2 when he was discharged he was still vomiting and I was told the doctor was leaving for the day and to give the medicine time to work. So I unfortunately listened. My dog couldn't stomach anything I couldn't start his antibiotics right away. He would throw up. Again give it time to work called twice. They did not care. They discharged him to soon. I don't see how they did not see my boy was not ready to leave. I took him to Veterinary Emergency Group at around 7am where he passed away. Severely dehydrated and in pain. I wish I took him to VEG instead of MedVet. I spent the whole time with my dog they didn't take him and put him in a cage. He got an ultrasound right away and didn't wait! They were compassionate and you could see what was happening. Medvet's is neglectful and money hungry. They didn't care about my boy. My severely anemic 16 yo cat took a turn for the worse on Saturday evening and I had to put him out of his misery. Having no better options, I called MedVet Sunday morning and asked if this visit would be quick. They assured me that they would be ready for me and the service will be expedited. When I arrived, they wanted to take my extremely sick and scared cat to "THE BACK" to put an IV port in his paw. I said that I didn't want to part with him, and asked them to do what regular vets do routinely, namely heavy sedation by intramuscular injection and THEN the IV port, once the cat is totally out of it. They reluctantly agreed, but administered a low dose of sedative that didn't knock my cat out. He was struggling to stay awake and acted very stressed. Then another dose, after which he started heaving and crying in great distress. After he finally became unresponsive (after 1.5 hours total), they took him away and put the IV port in his paw, then brought him back, and through the IV gave him more sedative and then the final drug. In my opinion, their stupid rules are designed with no empathy for the animals. They send a social worker to the room, provide some religious pamphlets about pet heaven, but they do not consider the good of the pets at all. Taking a distressed animal to "the back" for handling is inhumane in this situation. Not providing an adequate dose of sedative right away is inhumane. Forcing a terrified, distressed pet to wait almost two hours for his death is also inhumane. My advice is not to let your pet be euthanized there. When the time comes, please do everything in your power to have your regular vet do it humanely. It will take at most 10 minutes and the pet won't needlessly suffer. read more

It will be 1 year in a few days that our dog Sigma died at the hands of the ER service of this hospital. The first time he was admitted at Medvet, over a month prior his passing, he was diagnosed with a immune mediated polyarthritis. Something affecting his joins. They gave him steroids, a lot. And he started getting better. Then weeks later things took a turn for the worse. It began all suddenly a Friday night, with his pupils looking dilated. The next morning he had developed some sort of tremors and our vet immediately sent us to MedVet again. They did some XRay, saying they saw something that could resemble some mid case of pneumonia and gave us some drugs and sent us back home. The ER Vet at the time decided to ignore the tremors, despite our concerns and questions about it. At that time he was still under a steroids and anti-acid. What happened the following week is the reason of the 1 star. - Reaching out to the department that was handling his case during the week was borderline impossible, in fact we NEVER heard from them again. - When he didn't get better, we tried getting some advice on the phone. We got told to be patient or come back with him, no question can be answered on the phone. The hospital is almost an hour away and we were just trying to get someone on the line to describe symptoms and assess, but apparently that's too much asked. - When we did get back, they took him for urgent care. At this point the vet told us the XRay had revealed some foreign object in his stomach (unidentified, but could have been small bone shards) which due to anti-acid could probably not be digested, something that had been detected in the XRays a week prior, but had NOT been communicated that to us. - They also immediately drew more blood despite our concerns of him being weak with an accelerated heartbeat, which was more likely to make it worse. - We got the visit of a rude person who tried to sell us on the urns. While he WAS STILL ALIVE and we were trying to say good bye. - After his passing, they messed up the urn, twice. First it was wrong, second it was too small. We were already severely traumatized and still had to deal with more. Fortunately a decent manager helped us make that right at least. Here's the thing that still gets me today: They said we would get a call back from their chief veterinary to discuss with us about what happened and WHY it happened, and not only did it not happen, even after I asked them again, but they also ghosted me by email when all I was asked was simply. Why. Why did it happen. Why did a dog that had been healthy all his life, was getting significantly better, ended up passing so suddenly without ANYONE able to give us the beginning of a reason why. Why didn't they have the basic human decency of being true to their word and at least call us, unless they knew something wasn't right? "Why" is the reason even a year later I still can't have a proper night of sleep. Why I can't help but double guessing every decision made by vets and am afraid to leave my dogs alone. Medvet is supposed to be one of the best medical center for animals, but they couldn't even give us the beginning of an explanation as to what happened to our baby. Instead they'll redirect to an email that just never answers. Here's something for you, MedVet. When Sigma died, our generalist vet sent us a letter. A hand written letter. She knew what had happened wasn't right, should never have happened. She tried to help. She sat through difficult conversations with us. You decided ghosting us was in your best interest. My experience with MedVet is specifically dedicated to the dental department. My dog had two fractured teeth and needed to see a specialist. On top of that, he has a heart murmur (he was cleared by a cardiologist to be under anesthesia) AND severe separation anxiety so my nerves were at an all time high especially during covid when we cannot go inside with them. I can't say enough great things about the experience I had here. Everything from the initial consultation, through the actual surgery and compassion along the way that the entire team shared for myself and my pet. Dr. Saverino had recommended extraction during the consultation so that's what we did. (Also want to note that I had consultations at other locations, MedVet was my 3rd and the only one made me feel comfortable with their diagnosis) During the surgery itself - I received two different calls from Dr. Saverino directly to discuss what was happening. The vet tech (Jaqueline) was amazing. I wanted to hug her when she brought him back out to me. He apparently woke up from anesthesia very very upset and so she sat with him for 30 minutes, petting him under he calmed down. Both her and Dr. Saverino gave me great detailed explanations of everything and answered all my questions. They were constantly available to communicate with me as well. My 48-pound 10 year-old labradoodle, Cubby, has immune mediated polyarthritis. When it flares up, joints all over his body are incredibly painful when he puts pressure on them and walking is clearly excruciating. Last week, we went to the MedVet ER due to a flare-up that also caused a 105.6 degree fever. So, on top of unbelievable pain, Cubby was barely conscious. At 106 degrees a dog's organs begin to shut down, and he was just about there when we pulled up to the ER. When they instructed us to pull up in front, a nurse/tech came to get Cubby out of the car. I got out, went around to his door, and told her he really needs to be carried... he has an almost-106 degree temp and his joints are incredibly painful. Her response was, "we need him to walk if he can" and proceeded to put him on a slip lead while he stumbled and could barely stay on four paws. She then let him hobble in horrific pain into the facility (rather than carrying him). I have worked in animal welfare for 7+ years as an employee, and I have been involved in the rescue world for decades, and have never in my life seen such disregard for an animal's pain level. I can not thank MEDVET enough for assisting us with our sweet Maxine. She was having trouble keeping food down so we rushed her in on a Sunday July 28. She was pretty tired at that point but we waited patiently and kind Ariel helped check us in and marked us Urgent. We waited for maybe 30-45 minutes. We then got to see Dr. Erin Tennyson. She was amazing and spoke honestly with us about Maxine. You see, Maxine had been diagnosed last September with a mucous seal on her gall bladder. We knew we were on borrowed time. She was given fluids and meds. The team wanted to keep her for monitoring overnight but we wanted her home with us. On Monday July 29 she was not doing well, I had gone to work but my husband stayed home with her. She was not eating or going to the bathroom, just laying there and panting a lot. He told me to come home. We rushed back to MEDVET where we called en route and Ariel was put into action with a stretcher, thank goodness because she was limp. She was so sad to see Maxine's return and so were we to be back there. Dr. Tribble then took us back to a room to speak to us about what was going on. So very kindly, we were given the prognosis and it was not good. She had a mass on her liver, pancreas, a hot spot in the report in her stomach...it was too much to save her. She was 14. We had to make the hard decision to let her go but having her suffer any longer would have been cruel. Dani is the grievance counselor and she was absolutely a little ray of sunshine and understood the time that we needed before we officially said goodbye. Dr. Tribble came back in and told us how it would go...and he said it would be fast and it was! So fast! I am crying just writing this...We picked up her ashes and paw print the following Sunday. It was a sad day again for me...but I am trying to tell myself she is in a better place now. I miss her so bad! She was my only baby. My first on my own. I can not thank the team enough at MEDVET for being so kind and compassionate! I took my cat here during a weekend less than a year ago when he started showing signs of a nasty UTI... how do I know it was a UTI you ask? Because I have had male cats my entire adult life and had one that had a problem with them before he passed away (from something unrelated). On to the nightmare experience: First off, they will NOT let you leave. Which makes no sense at all. Why the heck can't I give them my number and they call when we're getting close is beyond me. Nope, they want you to sit there with ALL THE OTHER SICK PETS for NINE+ HOURS waiting to be called. My poor boy was literally scared motionless by the time he got in the room with the vet and she even commented on it - OF COURSE HE'S NOT MOVING he's been in a tiny crate for NINE HOURS. Secondly, this vet MISDIAGNOSED HIM telling me some bull crap that "male cats don't get UTIs," refused to give him any tests for one and then sent me on my way with a massive bill for close to 11 hours wasted and a misdiagnosis...How do I know he was misdiagnosed, you ask? Because my normal vet saw him the next day and TOLD ME HE HAS A UTI after she TESTED HIM for one and it was a nasty one at that. The medication cleared it right up, thank god. Lastly, my poor boy caught a TERRIBLE COUGH / respiratory infection after sitting in that god forsaken place for so long (11 hours by the end of it!). My poor boy came out WORSE than when he came in. Moral of the story: I am NEVER going here again, and if you care about your pets? Don't go here either. Not only are you chancing a misdiagnosis and a massive bill for it, but you're chancing your already sick pet's health by exposing them FOR HOURS to other sick pets and their infections. Chances of them picking something else up while sitting there that long? SUPER HIGH. read more

MedVet not only got us in on a walk in basis, they prioritize end of life incidents, so we were taken back within 5 minutes and a vet tech was with us within 15 minutes from there. Total time from arriving at the center to leaving was just over an hour. The staff was extremely caring and sympathetic. They made my Horus' passing as peaceful as it could possibly be. As hard as it was to part with a loved family member after 16 years, the staff here made it very smooth and dignified. We were offered unlimited time to say goodbye before the procedure and after. (We didn't take it, we were already at peace with the decision, though very much wished we had more time.) Very unexpectedly, we also received a sympathy card from the staff, with a hand-written, personalized, note inside. I have seen all the negative reviews, and truly, I cannot see how they are talking about the same place we were at. All through our visit we were treated professionally, yet with compassion. I was VERY surprised to find that at a 24/7 walk in emergency center. Final analysis - I very much recommend MedVet and thank them profusely for their treatment of us and Horus. read more

My dog kept throwing up so I took him to his primary doctor. His vet referred us to go to MetVet . When we arrived, the medical staff knew that we were coming. Our dog was taken in the back to the ER. What I've learned is that.... MetVet is a trauma hospital for animals. The doctors and medical staff are highly educated and explained in details...abc..xyz. They were also professional at all times. After our dog was stabilized and comfortable, we were escorted to see him before we left in the ER section. The next day, the Vet called me about the bad news that was discovered about his health. So, my brother and I went to the hospital see him for the last time because his health deteriorated more. We were asked to go to the 3rd floor to the internal medicine area. I was shocked that there are three floors that provides a variety of medical services. He was transported to a private room for viewing. He was still connected to the heart monitor and IV. He perked up when he saw us, smelled our hand scent, acknowledged our voices, and appreciate us being there with him. He knew that we were there I can tell that he didn't want to go. But he held on .....til his last breath. He was a dedicated family pet for over 13 years. We all will miss him! He is at peace‍ resting with the Lord. The MetVet staff offered after life options like creamation services from a local vendor. I ordered an urn, 3 clay impressions of his paw, and 4 urn paw pendants (necklaces). One clay print is a complimentary gift. I will always love you....Ari Gold! Thank you I'm highly impressed with their services. Please please please think twice before bringing your pet here. I brought my cat Fetty in on the night of May 3rd because we were referred here by Companion Animal Hospital since they couldn't figure out what was wrong with him and so they suggested we go here for an ultrasound. On May 4th I was called by his doctor to tell me that there was a foreign body and that they would need to do surgery to remove it, which we proceeded to have done. Before Fett'ys surgery, his surgeon called me to explain the process to me and the risks, she mentioned that there were 3 different levels of difficulty to the surgery but that they would know how difficult it was once they opened him up. At 7:30pm (that same day) I got a call from his surgeon telling me that the surgery they had done was the easiest one of the 3 and that he would be back home tomorrow if he ate the following morning or possibly stay an extra night if he didn't eat but that we can expect him back home nonetheless. At 8:30pm I received another call that he wasn't doing well post surgery and 15 minutes later I got another call that they would begin CPR on him. By 9:30pm we were in MedVet's grief room because they had lost Fetty. Imagine the grief and trauma of believing that your beloved cat would be home only to lose him an hour later? Things got worse from there though, that same night we picked up his urn and 2 days later we get a text from MedVet notifiying us that we would get a call to discuss last wishes after we had already decided that same night- clearly a lack of communication. The communication errors didn't stop there though, MedVet opened an entire investigation into his case and on May 16th (almost 2 weeks after Fetty's death) medical director Dr. Ambrosius called me to tell me that they didn't find any medical errors but that they believe that cause of death may have been because prior to surgery they were unable to take all the liquids out of Fetty thus creating a risk and ultimately leading to his death....keep in mind this was never communicated to me before the surgery nor after the surgery- instead it was communicated to me 2 weeks later. Dr Ambrosius did admit that there were obvious communication error's on MedVet's behalf however they still left us with a $5,000+ bill for a stay that lasted no more than 24 hours and the death of a beloved family member. So I urge you if you're thinking about bringing your pet here, please look elsewhere. There are plenty better options like Premier and Veterinary Emergency Group. I had to admit my cat for hospitalization at MedVet and surgery over this previous weekend. As a pet owner that hasn't had anything like this happen before, the staff at MedVet were amazing in explaining everything that he needed and providing updates! When my cat was first examined, they explained everything that needed to be done and the numerous courses of actions I could take. He was able to have surgery two days after being admitted and they kept him comfortable while he awaited surgery and treated him accordingly to ensure no complications happened before his operations - and I received numerous phone calls updating me on his status from both his nurses, surgeon, and staff. Shoutout to Chris, who texted me an update and pictures of him as she was heading out to ensure I knew he was doing okay. She understood my anxiety as I have never gone through this situation before and it was greatly appreciated! The entire staff at MedVet truly cares about the animals in their care and I could not be more thankful for what they've done. read more

It was a busy morning when I took my car in. I felt they did what they could but didn't feel like we got much individual attention. I know there are staffing issues but it seems something should be done to correct this. read more

My athletic male suddenly became paralyzed 9pm, this was during Xmas break. Had earlier called another vet Blue Pearl in the suburbs I told them what was coming in, and only after hours of being there do I get told the neurologist/neurosurgeon with no one to run MRI is on vacation. They should have directed me elsewhere. They direct me to UofIllinois - that is in Urbana. I keep calling looking for neurosurgeon, and get told I need to bring through ER here to get past them to get to their neurologist who is present. I pass off the lab work from other ER. MEDVET ER vet examines and tells me he's paralyzed. (Not a revelation) I am standing on one foot wanting to get through to the neurologist/neurosurgeon. It is explained to me in such a way that there is no hope. Yet, my boy still has pain sensation and reflexes intact in less than 24hrs since hind paralysis. Money is not an issue. But I never get to see MEDVET neurosurgeon/neurologist and I put him down based on the ER vet. I later look up that IVDD which was primary and the most common cause of sudden paralysis is 90-95% full recovery with neurosurgery. With those odds I would not have put my boy down. I had just sold my house and had hundreds of thousands in cash. I would have tried, money was not an obstacle. I was devastated with that revelation. I signed off and killed him for no reason, without trying. I would not recommend if you need a neurosurgeon. Too many hoops to even make contact and lack of adequate guidance (risks, benefits, alternatives) on chance for full recovery from an ER vet. He was stable, we should have had the opportunity to see the neurosurgeon and have guidance from them. read more

The emergency animal hospital is never a place anyone WANTS to be, but if/when your pet has an emergency, or needs specialized care, this is THE ONLY place to go. I've gone here over the years with multiple pets, and everyone, from Dr. Luethy, the cardiologist, to the ER staff, to the front desk people, has always treated my pets and me with the greatest care and utmost compassion--even (and especially) the day it wasn't my cat who I was picking up, but his ashes. They always take the time to listen, whether it's to symptoms or to stories. When it was time to let my beloved soul cat go at 3:30 am about two years ago, they so gently urged me in the right direction, never forcing me, and giving me as much time as I needed to say goodbye after he went to sleep. I feel like everyone I encounter at Medvet is always mindful that although they won't likely remember me or my pet after a while, they know that I will always remember them. And the warmth and love they give remain long after the grief or shock accompanying the circumstances that required my visit fade. I am not a religious person, but these people are Earthly angels who do Gd's work. It is such a tremendous comfort to know that when my pet and I need them and we're in the weakest, darkest, most vulnerable place, they are there to light the path forward and will take us by the hand and paw and help us move forward. read more

This place was so great in a very challenging time. They were quick to take my dog in for vitals. The vet was very knowledgeable and caring. Unfortunately, I had to put my dog down. The ones responsible for helping get through this were two social workers. All I can call them is my angels. They truly knew the words to say to counsel me. And bonus I just received a condolence card from MedVet. The entire staff was compassionate to me and my dog and truly a God sent. read more
