The bad: We spent $31.40 and waited about 25 minutes, maybe more, for our 2 orders. While the lady at the cash register apologized occasionally, there was no sense of urgency or care. i ate from melba's on tulane avenue for the first time and the food wasn't all of that. the bar-b-q ribs were very stringy, the macaroni was very gummy and it had so much cheese in it i almost choked. the cabbage was okay and the bread pudding wasn't sweet it looked old and it didn't have much of a taste. the cornbread was hard and it didn't have much of a taste and i don't mind spending money on food that i like to eat but it wasn't worth no $24.00 because the food really wasn't good at all to be honest. i give the food a thumb's down! the staff are very friendly and that was the best experience i had visiting melba;s. a lot of that food at melba's really looked old and i will never ever go back to melba's and spend any more of my money there point blank period! read more

I have been eating from Melba's for years and my favorite has always been the hot sausage po-boy. Tonight was the worst sandwich I have ever eaten from Melba's. The bread was different, not the real po-boy french bread I'm used to getting from here. The tomatoes were soggy and there was barely any Mayo on the sandwich. The food is great (unbeatable for the prices), plus the staff and customers add to the local vibe. Tried the grilled shrimp and fish po-boys, and fried wings. Sorry for late review but the past weekend, I visit New Orleans and went to Mothers' based off reviews and so on. I still was craving gumbo and a good strong daiquiri. A friend of a friend recommended this place and I wish I would've knew about Melba's before hand.. Everything was just amazing, it was a line at 12am but it moved along pretty fast plus they opened another line to keep things moving. Loved this little Cajun hideaway! A local favorite and great wide menu food and service. Yes a restaurant attached to laundry mat and gas station is not the norm. But food and service was wonderful. Our waiter one night in the city told us to check out Melba's for their great creole food and delicious po'boys. I love po'boys. He led us to a very good place. Ordering is a little tricky. We sat back for a second and watched a few people go through the line to make sure we went the right way. The woman who took our order was so patient and kind to us. We had a bunch of questions and even though we help up the line she acted like we were the only people in the place. We had redbeans and rice (my favorite side), jambalaya (my husband's fav), gumbo, crawfish (they sell by the pound), and my poboy. All very very good. Best in New Orleans? The soul food here is the show stopper, the cabbage, stuffed bell peppers I tasted it all but I was here for the crawfish. I had the po-boy as well but I wasn't impressed either.
