The beauty about Melba's is that it's a no frills place that caters to you regardless if you're a local or a visitor. The menu is vast but it's tried and true and you won't go wrong ordering something different every time you visit. A true community spot the staff is friendly and courteous. The hot plates are delicious and taste great. I recommended the stuffed peppers any day of the week and during lent get any of the seafood dishes. My go to is the chicken wings. I've gotten them late night and even for parties. They always throw in a little lagniappe for the loyal customers. For breakfast the hot sausage po-girl is a delight. I came to Melba's for lunch on my break. I ordered a 9th ward gumbo. When it was time to pay the cashier, she was dealing with a customer who was on the phone the whole time, as she was trying to use her debit or credit card...The lady took almost 10mins and the cashier had a guy's order, that was wrong also. I thought the cashier would have told the lady to get off her phone but didn't, and everybody who was in line was aggravated to the max! My food sat on the counter for 15 mins and the cashier was moving slow like she didn't care. The customer on the phone continued to have problems with her card, I then got mad and walked out. In New Orleans getting the local experience. Really enjoyed Melba's cafeteria style dining. I had the wings, red beans and rice, and cabbage. The flavors were great! I only wished that the wings were sauced and that the cabbage wasn't so cooked down. I also enjoyed an amazing daiquiri. DELICIOUS !!! I went twice during my visit. I went late at night with a long line. Which was expected during a $1 daquiri special. Food came within 20 min of ordering with little issue. Then I returned a for breakfast on my way out of town and waited nearly an hour for breakfast when it was empty. They staff were preoccupied during the ordering process. We asked several times about our food and no one seemed to be concerned with completing our order before breakfast was over at 11am. My boyfriend asked about our food twice and we told we were waiting on "hot sausage". When we got our food it wasn't even ours. My boyfriend had to turn around to return the food to get a refund. Then the staff had the nerve to try and convince my boyfriend we ordered something else. This restaurant is very nasty, no employees wear hairnets nor do they have on gloves while fixing the food. the grill guy in the kitchen was touching raw meat, containers and fixing food with his raw hands without washing or having on gloves. A friend of ours that lives in New Orleans tried to keep us away from "tourist traps" and urged us to get real authentic New Orleans food. During our Tour we landed here. We ordered the shrimp Po Boy and the Red beans and rice. The shrimp PO Boy was fresh and delicious! The shrimp were well seasoned, bountiful m light and crispy. My first late night food run in New Orleans. The line was long and they do have a vast menu for a late night food run. Decision number one while being here is deciding to order at kiosk (order fast but you don't get to see the food while waiting in line, which is what I did) vs waiting in line (longer wait but you get to see the sides and food as you going through the line). I got a wing ding dinner with macaroni and cheese (wings were ok nothing special and the mac and cheese was horrible/nasty, nothing but spaghetti noodles and melted cheese). I also had a small fried chicken tender po boy which was good (they have 3 different sizes and 10 + choices for the po boys). Overall I would maybe try something else but it wasn't great either. 4 stars for the food, it's amazing. I really love the corn grits and as a mom, I have a soft spot for a place to reward parent and kid for good grades! That being said this was my second time visiting. I came for the food and had slightly higher expectations for the customer service since the last time I came here was at 4am. Boy was I wrong. Overall this place was pretty good considering the price point and convenience of being open 24 hours. Not overly impressed with the baked mac n cheese because it was kind of runny. The chicken tenders were pretty juicy and not over powered with batter (yay). Main reason I'm giving this place 3 stars as opposed to 4 is because they left out our jambalaya with our Togo order. Good place for a late night poboy, or tenders, or a mix of anything. The hot sausage poboy is great for curing your hangovers or a severe hunger. The tenders are juicy with just the right amount of spice. Their jambalaya is a creole style with a heavy tomato taste on it. The gumbo is loaded down with meat, but thin. The place has a friendly vibe to it and sells its art on the walls. Their alcoholic slushees come in all different flavors and sizes. As cowboy Kent Rollins says, you cant get full on fancy. This place has great serving sizes and great prices. It's right next to a laundromat so you can do your clothes and get a bite. You can also play some video poker while you wait for your food. The prices are good and the food is good, and being open 24/7 also helps cure your late night munchies. I like this place when nothing else is open and for a quick bite. A trip to New Orleans wouldn't be complete without a po' boy so when I had some free lunch time (after way too long spent on the phone putting out fires), I ambled my way to Melbas. There were closer shacks to where I was posted up, but the promise of classic po' boy perfection AND a check-in offer were too much to pass up. I arrived and was told that they were not honoring the check-in offer. I walked the cracked, uneven and bumpy sidewalks of St. Roch for nothing. I was about to go all in on the counter when I spied a hottie who distracted me from my rant. You lucked out, Melbas. Another way they distracted me (admittedly, an easy task these days): 2-for-1 daiquiris on Wednesdays. What? I was here on a Wednesday! Could I, possibly, have two daiquiris for the price of one? I could, I could! Okay. Much better. I'm in a much better mood. Wait. I walked here. My 'office' is blocks away. How am I going to carry two jumbo (is there any other size?) daiquiris plus my food back to my destination? Oh, the humanity. Sadly, I opted for only one daiquiri* even though I could have - should have - been drinking two. So, I ordered a Panty Dropper, shrimp po' boy (no mayo) and red beans & rice. Not good. We got a ten pieces tender with two sides, Mac and Cheese and jambalaya. The tenders were dry af and not crispy at all. Not even half as good as what you would get at canes. Just nasty and not good food at all. My wife and I each ate one and fed the rest to the dog. He loved em if that's any consolation. The jambalaya was a disgrace. Well, that was my last visit to Melba's. I've eaten there at least once a week for a couple years now, and the staff rudeness yesterday evening when my wife picked up our takeout was just the dividing line I needed to go back to Gene's. Not only was the cashier incredibly rude about our order being called (our food sat there for 30 minutes before we were given a bad attitude when she asked if it was ready -- apparently they they had my name incorrect and were saying it so entirely wrong that she had no clue the food was ready), but the on shift supervisor was equally as rude when, at check-out, my wife asked if we could use our Yelp check-in for free fries. She checked in while waiting for our food for 30 minutes. Apparently that's a no-no? Is it REALLY that hard to finish the order then make another ticket for some fries? I wouldn't think so, except apparently this was a supervisor we were dealing with: "Do you REALLY expect me to call my manager for $1.99?!" Yes. Yes, we do. It's YOUR Yelp offer: not our circus, not our monkeys! Apparently the "supervisor" can't change an order to add free fries, but they can certainly add $1.99 to my bill for the same fries... we ended up paying for them. But nope, that's not all. I would've been FINE with that. Here's the kicker: the supervisor AND the cashier teamed up thinking my wife was being ridiculous for even nicely asking about the Yelp check-in and immediately assumed she was "not from here". After probably 100 visits, and me not complaining about some really crappy food sometimes (because most of the time it's good), y'all have the audacity to treat us like outsiders? Well - that's that. I can't figure what it is about the chick I love so much, but it has this fluffy, cakey tight flavor that just makes me go yum yum. What I also love about this place is that the price is just right for a quick and easy meal. You can easily spend 5 bucks and some change and get 8 wings, fries, and a salad. It's pretty good meal if you are into fried foods. Also they have a yummy poboy. What makes their poboy so yummy has to be the French bread. It is so soft and makes you feel like eating all the goodness in the world. Also at this location you can order breakfast, catering orders, gumbo, and shrimp pasta. Also if you get a little thirsty there are daiquiris for you to try it. Parking: It's pretty easy breezy. Ample parking in front and on side of the building, so you shouldn't have any issues there.
