Out of towner who was told by stewardess on airplane to go to Melba's, it was so good I took a cab there twice. Tried parts of 4 different po'boys between the 2 trips, thank god a local told me to get the spicy sausage po'boy before the 2nd time. All the different po'boys were great but the spicy sausage one was really a something. The corn grits were also really a something. This place is just fantastic and a great deal for the prices, which are reasonable. Amazing fish, holy crap. I got a grilled fish plate and a fish po boy and I wanted to go back everyday. The prices are really high though. And the staff is super unfriendly. The wait is pretty long too, so if you order in to go you end up with the sassy staff just glaring at you for no reason for what feels like forever. The food is so good though that I'll still call ahead and pick it up, but that's the only way I would get it. read more

If you're looking for quick Cafe, corner store deli food. This is the place for you. Let's start with the food: so my group had the mac and cheese (bland), jambalaya (actually really good, and the only reason I'm giving it 2 stars), chicken (decent), and the fish po boy (had my cousin on the toilet). Now for the rest. The place is disorganized, you're suppose to order on one side then pick up on the other. So the pick up side is also the bar side. Well when you have people line up across the whole bar how are you suppose to pick up your food?! Maybe you should designate a small space for pick up only so when you actually call out customer names they can actually get their food. They call names and even though you're trying to get to the counter to get your food they can not tell who wants a daqauri vs who is picking up their food. Next issue, we get our food and it's missing key components like the chicken, and my mom was missing part of her order as well. It took 10 minutes to get someone's dang attention to get the rest of our food. Needless to say the food was not worth our time or the lyft ride to get there. read more

I absolutely love that this place is 24 hours and you can get anything on the menu. This was my second time here and it was a drunken late night run to add more liquor to my system. The drinks are A1. And the food is nourishment to my soul. Especially the red beans and rice. Soooo good read more

The mac & cheese, gumbo, red beans and rice were good. The place was small but had a really friendly atmosphere. This place feels and looks like a gas station pit stop. The cornbread could have been better but I wouldn't recommend driving all the way from Frenchmen street for this. The wait was quick and the workers were friendly. First time to eat at Melba's, but have heard about it. The wife got the mac and cheese and bourbon chicken; I had the fish and shrimp po boy. Great food, and love the fact that the owner gives back to the community. Your kid makes "A"'s on his report card, they get a slice of cake and you get a free po boy. The GED program is awesome. Today was my first time visiting Melba's, and it will be my last. One word that describes my experience today was a circus, while waiting for my corn grits and shrimp which took thirty minutes, I overheard a conversation between a local and two tourist about how "food outside of the French Quarter was the real taste of NO". Sadly this wasn't the case today for my girlfriend and I, and the worst thing about was the dining experience in itself. While I waited for my corn grits and shrimp, the staff were severely behind on orders, arguing in front of customers ( and I mean yelling) with each other, and EVEN with customers who had every right to be frustrated with the unpleasant wait. I've never felt more awkward eating in my life a restaurant in my life until Today. I'm giving my experience two stars instead of one simply because it was apparent that locals still choose to eat here so I couldn't overlook. I was truly disappointed. read more

The only reason why they get more than one star is because they are open late. And there are not too many places to choose from this late. The counter service is slow. I mean VERY slow. I think I waited about 25 minutes for fried chicken. Fried chicken never takes that long. I don't care what you say. But then I was happy to see chicken when it came until I got to the part where I had to eat it because it was very salty and tasted like checkers or rally's. This is one of the best finds in the city! They have a little bit of everything... From gumbo to green beans to fried chicken wings to cake to daiquiris! They even serve breakfast and there's a washerteria attached. They offer discounts to police officers so I always feel safe because there are usually many police there having lunch while I'm waiting. Melba's had four stars on Yelp and was even better than described. They're open 24/7, with a parking lot and plenty of seating, and have some amazing art on the walls and in the presentation. The sandwiches come in teal sacks and sturdy shopping bags because they are mighty! We were feeding 6 and got a sampler pack that I selected with the help of Miss Lula, our very friendly cashier. Shrimp, catfish, Philly Voodoo, Ham (hot), Smoked sausage, hot sausage, and hamburger. We got them all "dressed" with lettuce, tomatoes and mayo for 75 cents each. The group favorites were 1. Philly Voodoo (better than a cheesesteak in Philly, and I used to live there) 2. Catfish 3. Hot sausage. Folks didn't love that the shrimp was fried and the hamburger to me seemed not that special, I was hoping maybe for a loose meat situation but it was a patty. They also serve lots of other great looking food and have five frozen beverage machines and a laundromat next door. This place is awesome and a delight to visit in New Orleans! read more

I know this is a beloved institution in the seventh ward, however their breakfast is disgusting- I have never had such a gross breakfast in New Orleans or anywhere really- so there's that. Disclaimer, I didn't try anything else on the menu. The staff was eccentrically New Orleans and somewhat friendly as described! And it does have an interesting story behind it and has lots of different things to see and eat and drink. So if you want just an experience go there. read more

This place was a find! Off the beaten path, but wow does it have good stuff. And really inexpensive. I got boiled crawfish for $2.55/lb! Oh, the spices they used in the boil... I'd eat that any time. I had a shrimp PoBoy w/ order of fries. Also a fish & shrimp plate w/ Mac & Cheese. The wait time for the food turned out to be worth. Nearly 30 min for a PoBoy & seafood plate was pretty long. My shrimp PoBoy was fresh and full of flavor. The bread was chewy & over toasted for my liking but overall a good PoBoy. The fries were a major disappointment. They were cold & old. The fish & shrimp plate was also very fresh & full of flavor. Not sure what filet of fish it was but it was meaty and it wasn't too "fishy". I also grabbed a few lbs of crawfish and even though they were a bit on the small side the seasoning was on point. I enjoyed this spot. read more

came in on a very busy night. lots of tourist. myself and the others were confused on how to place an order with a person as opposed to the self serve kiosk. the staff watched us all line up at the food counter. nobody acknowledged us, and said the proper place to line up was at the register. once we got to the register to place our order, the cashier (whos picture is right up front) was obviously frustrated, and therefore rude to customers. the cornbread, fried chicken, and gumbo was good! but the rice was not done--it was hard and crunchy. other than the rice, the food was not a disappointment at all! perhaps this was a bad night, and the staff was not prepared for such a large amount of people to all come in at one time. read more

I ordered online from this place 3 times and each time I waited over 45 to 1hour. Sitting in what they call curbside or getting out and walking in to pick it up myself. Simple basic food that usually is prepared in less than 15 min. I asked the so called manager they had on duty what's taking long ? Who might I add didn't have a manager bone in her body! Didn't look the part and definitely didn't communicate like one ! Her response was they had people order before you . My response is well you guys shouldn't quote false times if I order 5 chicken tenders and Mac and cheese that's already cooked it should not take 1hr and if you have orders ahead of me I kinda think that's the point of being in business learn how to prioritize your orders and don't stand with your back turned to guest talking about Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and etc and maybe you guys can get your customers food orders out in sufficient time PS I will never order or recommend this place again. read more

Went to Melba's after Zulu and it was by far the most clutch meal of Mardi Gras. Had a 1/2 shrimp 1/2 fish Po boy, which was great. the seafood was fried to perfection! After sampling some of the crawfish, we decided to also buy 15 lbs of them. This restaurant is awesome and I can't wait to make another trip to this place. read more
