We finally made it to Melba's. Based on the reviews, we were expecting something different. Then again, maybe we just didn't order the right items. The staff was/is extremely friendly. There were a lot of food options. And people seem to REALLY love it! The daiquiris are STRONG, so don't be fooled by cool looking "slushy" machine :-) There friend shrimp was average, but there was no cocktail sauce. (But that may not be a New Orleans thing) The macaroni and cheese is not what you may be expecting NOR are any of the polish boys - except shrimp. The red beans and rice was very tasty. And everyone seems to really like the corn grits. Its an experience. But, I do't know that it is any different/better than any other restaurant in New Orleans. You should also note the neighborhood is nothing like the Quarter, so don't show up if you are "nervous" and will look/be uncomfortable. read more

*sigh*....I was really hoping that the second time around would be better. I read all the other negative reviews and saw that the owner recommended we "give them another chance" to redeem themselves. His response was quite repetitive so I figured had I wrote a negative review the first time I would have received the same response as the others. Anyways, my boyfriend and I decided to give this place a second shot for our second trip to NOLA during our drinking endeavors remembering that last time we had the food it was excellent. However, it still managed to live up to its first reputation with us. We arrived there at approximately 12:30am and put our order in through the personal kiosk at around 12:35am. I am not kidding you when I say that our food didn't get to us until 1:45am. YES, OVER AN HOUR LONG WAIT. And for what? Basic "fast food". Uh uh. My boyfriend went up several times and asked if they had called us without us hearing them. Each time it was a no. So finally when we got our order we went through and we were missing all of our sides and our drinks. My boyfriend went to the front and told them that we were missing a bunch of stuff and the associates were AGAIN nothing but rude and unsympathetic. They rolled their eyes and didn't acknowledge our request with words. Only an eye roll and some huffing and puffing as if we were disturbing their time. Which by the way is on my dollar. The dollar they use to pay for their families. Needless to say, the second chance we gave them, they blew, yet again. It is very sad because I love their food, but the lack of customer service, the time of food making, and the cleanliness has scarred us from ever visiting again. My family and I first visited New Orleans last year and happened upon Melba's which was not very far from where we were staying. Needless to say, we will never forget the food. So much so, my husband and I visited again 2 weeks ago while on a short trip. The food is AMAZING!!!! Just trying to figure out the next thing to try is hard as while in the line everything looks SOOOOO GOOD!!!. I can't get enough of the 'Grilled Shrimp' while he dreams about the 'Shrimp and Grits'. We will visit New Orleans again for sure, if just to go to Melba's :-) read more

This review is for the service. So if they open 24/7 like you advertise then why does everything gets turn off. Probably the worst place in New Orleans to get food. I was just here and ordered a french fry with cheese dressed on a bun togo( I initially wanted cheese fries with gravy but they would not take that request even though they have the capability of doing so since they can serve all that on a bun or po boy bread). Whatever, its not a complicated order right? Fries, cheese, gravy, extra pickle bun, voilà... It took fifteen minutes to get the order, which is kinda absurd in fast food world. I could have waited in the Micky D's drive through 3 times. And check this, on my way out they yell my name and say my order is messed up, it's a roast beef on a bun. I told them don't worry about it, I'll just eat this. I get home which is close, open it and it looks like a dressed sloppy joe on a bun. Hungry as hell and eat it as it falls apart in my hands. Some of the meat was not fully cook(most of it was, but a small about was more then pink) and it may have been the saltiest sandwich I have had in a while. I want to go to sleep, however I'm so full of horrible food that I didn't even order that I won't be able to go sleep(which kinda defeats the purpose of getting fast food). To top it all off, their service was not great. How can 6-8 people working the front line not know how to coordinate orders? I saw one guy staring at an order then arguing about it with his co worker for 3-4 minutes. Fast food is all about efficiency. I don't want to be there longer then seven minutes, period. My mental capacity isn't that strong at 12:30 am. Look Melba's, the next you decide paint your name on a decrepit house opposite from your business, maybe you should hire a manager that can run your vile food into human stomach's faster. I then asked him why when I was about to buy her food and/or not give her money. He ignored me. The cashier then told me that she causes problems and etc so I then proceeded to apologize and he just literally ignored me. I tried to say look should I be buying her food, sorry for the attitude and instead of him talking to me as the manager, he just ignored me. He then decided to call the police on us after a white customer who didn't know what was going on, started voicing their negative opinion. This place was spot-on for us in so many ways. Me friends got the pork chop plate and the seafood plate. As a pescatarian, I only eat seafood. 'Tis a shame for the cabbage, gumbo, and red beans to carry meat , as they looked just as devine as the best mac 'n cheese in town. Grilled shrimp was lovely. Staff are lazy and rude, ignoring customers while chatting, then either stared at us without speaking and walking away when we tried to get their attention. After finally getting someone's attention, they rudely told us that our order would be called over the speaker when ready. We sat at a table and didn't hear a single order called over the speaker in the time we were there. After a total of 40 minutes had passed since we ordered, we finally managed to got someone else's attention at the counter, and they just threw the bag at me without saying anything. Food was disgusting. Menu - both in person and on-line - contains insufficient information about the dishes. When asked what was in the stuffed bell peppers, multiple staff members said they didn't know - and just stood there instead of finding someone who did. I Been coming here with my family since I was a kid, I remember when they first selling ice cream. Thats how far back I go. Anyways Just the other day, I came in. They were semi busy as usual. I got in line and just as I was about to step up to the cashier, I saw one of the other cashiers walking while baking a sandwich and step on a roach.. A ROACH! And maybe the young lady didn't even notice it, but I saw it. I immediately jumped out of line and left. We know how new Orleans is with bugs, but you are open 24/7. You have some time in between to clean or get an inspection. I'm really disgusted that you would continue serving food while fully knowing you have an infestation. I don't care about the attitudes of your employees because, we all know how customers can get. But you have an infestation that you have not done anything about. The sausage/egg patty biscuit is $6.00 and tastes like cardboard. They did slap some cheese on there, but it was as cold as the fridge and they looked at me strangely when I asked them to heat it for ten seconds to please melt the cheese. NOT worth the cost. July 2018 was my first vacay in New Orleans. On our last night @ midnight I thought, "you can't leave without eating some gumbo. 1st time trying crawfish from Melba's and I'll say this, "NEVER NO MO'!" Besides them throwing in about 2lbs of whole onions and half lemons with the 10lbs I ordered I've never had such an array of bad crawfish in my life. It was like they mixed in re soaked crawfish with dirty crawfish and over cooked crawfish. Only about every 10th one was edible. So it looks like they did me a favor by only giving 8lbs after I pulled out the 2lbs of lemons and onions. The rest were filthy, not purged correctly. Over cooked, just broke apart as mush upon peeling them and just plain tasted bad, like 3 day old re warmed crawfish. Look, I'm a local. Not some hipster transplant from Portland who doesn't know any better. I FED THE 1ST 2 TO MY 2YR OLD FOR CHRISTS SAKE!!!! If it wasn't for the traffic and aggravation I would've returned them. This was more of a social tradition than a "I have to feed my family with this" situation so I'll take my L. The lil free daquiri doesn't even make up for this ineptitude. I would eat other items here but now I won't return for ANYTHING. Too many other options in town. I'd eat those lih dried ass shrimp from the asian corner store before I eat crawfish from there again.
