I had a really disappointing experience at Mellow Mushroom (1571 21st Ave N). I usually order to-go because the last time I sat at the bar, my food came out cold. I decided to give them another chance and dine in this time, but unfortunately, it was even worse. When I walked in, the young woman at the front (blonde, curly hair) was in a heated conversation on her cell phone. I waved to get her attention, and she rolled her eyes at me. She continued pacing back and forth, in and out of the kitchen, while finishing her call before finally helping me. When she approached, she pushed the menu toward me with an obvious attitude. I told her I already knew what I wanted: a large pizza with vegan cheese, which I've ordered there many times before. She immediately responded that they "don't have vegan pizzas." I explained that I order it regularly and would like a large pie with vegan cheese. She repeated, again with attitude, that they don't have it. I clarified that I wanted to build my own with vegan cheese -- which is what I was trying to say from the beginning. She then rudely took the order, walked away, and yelled back, "And what to drink?" At that point, after being treated so poorly, I declined a drink. I stepped away to the restroom and decided it was best to just leave altogether. The service was so unwelcoming and disrespectful that I didn't feel comfortable staying. Sadly, this explains why the bar area often seems empty. 7-2-26 6:45pm one of my employees and his family asked me to meet them at this place, and I turned down graciously, and I'm glad I did, as when they walked in the main entrance, here's what greeted them at the door. I would have lost my mind on the manager had I went, and although the American Roach isn't a disease carrier, they shouldn't be inside of any restaurant. Most people would and should have lost their appetites when they saw this, and clearly should have changed their desire to eat out. Stay home and hug your grills people. Tons of local restaurants are filthy, and ownership doesn't care. Whomever does the pest control here should be ashamed, as should this ownership. read more

I also tried a small hamburger and artichoke pizza, and it was excellent. The crust had that classic Mellow Mushroom texture--crispy on the outside, soft inside--and the combo of savory beef with avocado worked really well without being heavy. We've been here twice now. It's super clean inside and decorated similar to the others we've been to. The staff here is very friendly and courteous, despite it being one of the busiest locations we've ever been to. We were looking for a place to grab lunch and my wife being from Atlanta knew of the mellow mushroom. It's a very fun bright place and even though we don't have kids, I can imagine children loving this place as they have a giant fish tank, a shark head coming out of the wall and some of the tables and the hostess station are made out of old boats. We shared pretzel bites which was awesome. I had the white pizza, my wife had the pepperoni and mushroom pizza both were excellent! They have a great beer, wine, and cocktail list and I felt prices for the food quality were reasonable. Our server was also very sweet and kind as was the rest of the staff. read more

So we were torn as to what we should eat. We ended up with this chain restaurant. I wasn't expecting much. We started with the pretzel bites. They were actually really good. Should have taken a photo. Then we were trying to figure out how much pizza to order since our group was 10 people. 3 large at 8 slices seemed like maybe the right mount, but not knowing how big the slices are, we opted for 4 large. Well let me tell you the slices were huge. So we ended up with a pizza and 3/4 left at the end. I'm sure they won't go to waste, but we could have ordered 3 and been fine. Because it was lunch time mid-week, after the summer season, there were few customers. Despite this service was a bit slow, she was not very attentive but sweet and got the job done. It's unusual for me to be in Myrtle Beach on a Friday night, but husband and I were picking up friends at MYR so we decided to stop in and get dinner before their flight arrived, and this was the closest Mellow Mushroom to the airport. The joint was hopping! Friday nights are family nights at Mellow Mushroom - the main dining section was packed with parents and children enjoying a night out, so we opted to seat ourselves at a high top in the bar area. Our server came right over with menus, and took our drink order. (Just water for me, driving.) We planned to order a pizza to go after we finished dinner, so our friends could enjoy some delicious pizza after their journey, and our stellar server suggested we put in the order with our dinner order, as the kitchen was starting to back up with pizza orders. Excellent tip! We did just that and they kept it warm for us until we were ready to leave. My GF veg out pizza, sans Roma tomatoes and with extra cheese, was piping hot and delicious fresh out of the oven. Ditto my husband's large pepperoni mushroom pizza. Review preface- husband and I are devoted craft beer and Mellow Mushroom eaters. Religious followers of our home location in Winston Salem and have had many positive HH experiences at other MB location on Kings HWY. This, was a whole other negative ballgame. UGH customer service zero. Being working class professionals (essential worker and teacher) on vacation without unlimited funds we waited until 4 to take advantage of not only the HH beer specials but the $10 cheese pizza Monday special at Mellow. Didn't know we'd have to almost beg on our hands and knees to get it. Unlike other Mellow MB locations we were not initally given a HH menu. When I asked about any beer specials IMMEDIATELY "LC" our servers initials- attitude changed- big breathy SIGH - like I was asking for her firstborn. HH beer special menu basically printed on a paper towel..not laminated like any other place we've been to. Also NO food specials to speak of- which isn't what they have advertised online. Nevertheless- we'd waited this long to eat and forged ahead. Long short story- LCs attention mainly focused on the two male golf regulars at end of the bar - no feeling of welcome as a guest or respect as a customer at all. All eyes On These two regular dudes. So again, Monday cheese pizzas are supposed to be $10- IT IS THEIR BACKGROUND PHOTO ON FB and a given special at any Mellow we have been to. Needless to say- charged $16. Asked LC about price upon receipt of bill- BIG HEAVING SIGH- "ugh it's supposed to be for take out only, but THIS TIME I'll give it to you." What? Where does it say "to go only" on THEIR FB profile? And oh, thanks for the HIUGE FAVOR honoring your ADVERTISED SPECIAL. Place was dead anyway- she wasn't busy to rerun ticket. . So, I could have/should have gotten it to go and saved ourselves $25 in beers that we had to beg for anyway at HH price? And to NOT deal with LCs "glowing" and welcoming demeanor? Follow our lead and GET IT TO GO ON MONDAYS. I was In the service industry for over 10 years and I always tip 20% but this moody unwelcoming LC made me almost spit leaving her that much- completely undeserved but left out of respect for INDUSTRY- not her. Had I not been a server I would have left her $1 and nasty note. Take aways? Mellow- think about having a warmer welcoming front of house presence than LC- we won't be back based on Tonight and neither will other vacationers. I guess she will make her money off the locals. Maybe she can grumpily clear tables without offending anyone? Vacationers- ask ask ask about specials because they AREN'T going to share.MONDAYS GET THE CHEESE TO GO and keep your hand earned money from that mean bartender LC Overall just a hugely disappointing MM and vacation experience. I'll start this review off with.... Amazing F'n Pizza! We started the night off with an order of tater tots to start (they don't do fries), and they were great. We also ordered Buffalo wings, which were hot, fresh and not chewy or too fatty. Just great. Lastly, we ordered a personal cheese pizza and a half Great white (sooooo good) and half Pacific Rim (omg and spicy). As locals, we've been to this restaurant multiple times. we love the pizza but the customer service and wait time has always been a downfall. Our order processed and was charged to our credit card, with email confirmation. Arrived at 6:30 to pickup to say it wasn't processed. They had the order printed but it didn't go through for some reason. A second email was sent saying their system was down and didn't process it and the original payment would be refunded. Although they said the credit card didn't go through, we have proof it did. Instead of making it right, upon return for our order they yelled and accused us of being ugly and cursing (although we were upset no curse words were used!). They would not refund, give credit, offer any sort of compensation for our 2.5 hour wait for our order. We are locals, and order from here every couple weeks. Grayson was the ugly worker who needs to be off the customer service area. He was rude, disrespectful and unprofessional. You have lost our business because of him, we will no longer order from Myrtle beach mellow mushroom. If you like jerk you will probably enjoy this one as it definitely has the jerk flavor without the heat. The buffalo wings were also very good They're baked instead of fried and come with an ample amount of celery and carrots unlike many place's that give you 2 or 3 measly celery sticks They have excellent drink offerings and at least 40 different beers to choose from.
