Ok so few problems with this place. First off our waitress was super nice. Very friendly. But the problem is she was the only waitress and there quite a few tables so she was super busy. We never got a refill on our drinks but she did give us to go drinks without us asking. I don't blame the waitress since she was the only one and there were about 10 full tables. The food was more of my problem. It's pretty much food you buy at Walmart and cook at your house. Hash browns were mushy. Like mashed potato's with crust on top. Sausage patty's were dry. Probably pre cooked than heated up eggs over easy look like I made them so slightly over cooked. Bacon melted in my mouth but tasted slightly burnt My wife got a cheesy omelette. Great service! Good food. Cheap as all get out. I was pretty pleased with our visit to this tiny little diner. While the folks that were having lunch when we walked in found my group worth staring at (piercings, tattoos, etc. I could just hear the "look at those hooligans!" in their eyes...), the staff didn't blink an eye and were incredibly hospitable. My wife and I were in Port orange to visit my sister and had time to have a good diner breakfast before our visit and decided to try Mel's diner, seriously not expecting to run into Flo or Alice!! This is a nice local diner, when we got there, the place had a good amount of customers and you could tell they were regulars by the way the staff new who they were with greetings by name. We love those kind of places and we were not disappointed the waitresses were very friendly and attentive, the menu has all of the typical diner items and some Mel's specials, the food was very good and came to the table nice and hot. I ordered the biscuits and sausagravy with 2 eggs over easy with thier home fries, you can get hash browns if you wish, the eggs were perfect and the sausagravy was fresh and home made, cleaned my plate. My wife had the eggs Benedict flourentine, she loved it also cleaned her plate and she always has a to go box. When in the area again we will definitely go there again. read more

My new favorite 'diner'. I've been here the past few days in a row since it is so hard to find a decent breakfast place around the area. The SOS (chipped beef) over toast and biscuits and gravy were very good and freshly made. The hash browns were crisply and not too greasy. Did not care for the home fries as the potatoes were not cooked enough. Great fresh brewed sweet tea here (like Dustin's or Chick Fil-a). My boyfriend and I went to Mel's on a Friday morning around 9 or so. He had the country fried steak and said it was comparable to other area restaurants. I had the biscuits 'n gravy, eggs and potatoes. I thought it was much better than other area restaurants. The menu isn't extensive which I really like. I thought the prices were very reasonable. Sevice was terrific and when I asked for water, the server brought my boyfriend a water as well! (A big plus in my book). I read on line about the acoustics and yep, that is true. Had breakfast at Mel's with a small group of folks this past weekend; we were treating ourselves to a hearty breakfast before a day of manual labor (moving, ugh!) I split an order of biscuits and gravy with my date, and despite the fact that they use a powdered pepper gravy mix (this info was freely given by the waitress), it was still fairly tasty, with plenty of sausage mixed in throughout. The biscuits were not the fluffiest I have ever had, but you have to wonder how fluffy a biscuit will remain after it's been slathered in a cup or so of heavy gravy, right? My sister ordered the french toast casserole, and I am told it was "divine", which I have to take on faith, as I am not so much a fan of sweet breakfast foods. The coffee was plentiful and our cups never ran empty, even though the place was clearly quite busy. Note that there is no Splenda on the tables (just pink and blue stuff), but if you ask for it, your waitress will bring you a few packets. This would be a 4 star review, but there was a Twilight movie poster hanging on the wall, and well. Have to knock a star off for that. read more

My friends and family have been coming here for years. With the new virus situation we still decided to have Sunday breakfast out at Mel's yesterday anyway. Should have stayed home. It took 25 minutes to get our food. In the mean time the waitress comes over and says I forgot to give you spoons for your coffee and then puts one in my coffee cup. What in the heck was she thinking? I drink my coffee black. If I wanted to put cream or sugar in it I would put the spoon in myself after I cleaned it. I had no idea where that spoon had been or if someone that had the virus had touched it. I could not drink my coffee after that. So when our breakfast finally came my eggs were cold and the hash browns were overdone. My brothers everything omelet was fine. Ended up going here by accident because they closed the Moe's next door and Ritter's no longer sales fries. I have never been more happy to have to rapidly change plans. I keep going back to this place. The food is hit or miss. Sometimes they get it perfect, sometimes they miss the boat. The price is good, the staff is friendly. Even when it is bad, it is still fine for what it is. Edit: I have still been going back once or twice a week..and I have to say, it is getting to be better more often than not... I was really looking forward to trying this place out for my sunday brunch but was deeply disappointed when the waitress seemed to be very unwelcoming. When she was taking our order she was looking around as if she was not interested and she barely smiled at us. Mel's is a nice place. This is obviously a hangout for locals and there's a very good reason for that. The food is great, it's affordable and it's served up by extremely friendly and attentive wait staff. Feeling a bit peckish this morning, I had to try Mel's Mega Breakfast and coffee. It did not disappoint but as hungry as I felt and as good as it was, I couldn't quite finish the whole platter of eggs, sausage, bacon, home fries and toast (note to self: Remember the meaning of the word "Mega" when it's placed before anything.) Definitely worth a visit if you're looking for a good breakfast spot. They have a good sized menu to choose from. The food tastes fresh and was not greasy. The place is basically one big room with tables very close to each other. Because of this it can get loud if there are a lot of people there. First, the food was amazing! We were greeted by smiling faces and told us to sit where we would like. We were quickly greeted again by our server who was the sweetest and genuinely cared about her customers. The best part was how fast our food came out. Less than 5 minutes, though we weren't sitting there with stop watches lol. I definitely recommend the hash browns, super crispy on the outside and mashed potato consistency in the middle... all I can say is there wasn't even a crumb left on my plate because it was so well prepared. Stopped in for breakfast around 11am and the placed was still packed with breakfast patrons. I had eggs and bacon, hubby had eggs and hash with grits. Everything was good. Only complaint is you only get 2 pieces of bacon so if you love bacon order extra! The coffee was served in a good sized cup and was piping hot and delicious. Went in for the first time with my wife. Ordered 2 eggs with home fries and wheat toast for my wife, 2 coffees and 2 eggs scrambled well done with home fries ( asked to make extra hot) with country fried steak ( asked how it was first) , very good I was told and rye toast. Waited for food. When it was brought to the table I went for the eggs first and they were luke warm, the home fries which were suppose to be grilled were white in color and actually had no temperature. Country fried steak, I've had better... sent plates back, both potatoes with the eggs. The potatoes must have been nuked because they did not touch the grill and eggs came back the same. Mel's Diner was delicious! It's cafeteria style feel -- but the delicious food, sweet servers and impeccable service makes up for it all. I generally shy around from "cafeteria" style feel. You have your own incisional table, but still. It's generally not my thing and I mean that in the least snobbiest way.
