It's been a year since I was last here. We made a reservation for 6pm Friday thinking it was going to be pretty busy. When we walked in, there were still plenty of open tables available. But halfway through our meal, it picked up quite fast and all the tables were basically utilized... Anyways, we checked in and got seated. Pretty much anywhere we wanted as it was still early. The last experience here, the service was great. This time, it was a bit slow at the beginning after being seated. It took a while till someone actually came over to check up on us and take our order. Once someone arrived, service was better. Paula/Poala was the sweetest. She took care of us that night. We started off with a bottle of the red blend which they ran out but she brought two others that were similar. The one we ended choosing was quite nice. Bold rich flavors that was perfect with dinner. I overheard that the bread and dips were only offered if you were having a meal. If you were just having empanadas or such, there's a fee for them. I don't know. The wine was good start though. From there, an order of the provoleta, Argentina style grilled provolone cheese. Thick cheese served hot in a skillet with tomatoes salsa. Perfect with the French bread that was brought out. Also, with the bread, both the chimichurri and tomatoes salsa were brought out. Cheese was quite nice but if it's sitting for a while, It does thicken up so i recommend having it asap when it's still hot. Entrees, an order of the Milanesa Napolitana. Thinly cut and breaded fried steak topped with ham, cheese and tomatoes sauce. And the Milanesa de Pollo Napolitana which is the same except with chicken. Both dishes was quite nice and served with a side which we choose the mashed potatoes. And lastly the Merluza Picatta, pan seared merluza fish topped with white wine caper cream sauce. Pretty much similar to chicken picatta. All three dishes were excellent but the sides of mashed potatoes were cold when they were brought out minutes later. Also, they forgot my ham and cheese empanada which I reminded them. To which they said that it was over there sitting. Basically forget about it. Again, when it was brought out, cold just like the mashed potatoes. Besides that, the entrees were great. Service was slow at the beginning but it did make up throughout dinner. Even the manger I believe, he came over to see if we enjoyed our meal. Also mentioned some wine that we should try next time as well as showed up some bottles. That was sweet. Not only the restaurant, they do have a nice butcher counter with fresh meat. A bakery with amazing pastries as well as frozen food for purchase. And the massive wine selection on display in the store section. Food was great, we enjoyed our meal. Parking is a tight squeeze in the lot if you're lucky but street parking is available.
If you have not been to Argentina and wish to taste some of their foods, one of the eateries you should visit is Mercado Buenos Aires, in Van Nuys. The moment you walk in you are transported to another place. There are grocery items, a selection of wines (guess from where) and cases with baked goods which include pastries, cakes and then some of the well known Argentinian smaller bites. They include but are not limited to empanadas, spinach pie and their tea sandwiches with ham and cheese. There are also, freshly baked baguettes and other breads. The mood is definitely South American and so is the music, which is at a perfect decibel level, to make you enjoy it and not have to scream to talk. This place also has a sit down area, with tables and a menu where you can order more Argentinian delicacies. I came here for something small. Got three different empanadas, the beef, the chicken, and the spinach. Between the empanadas, my favorite was the chicken. It had a satisfying mix of spice and heat. The beef is also good but more milder in flavor. Both succulent and tasty. Also got a slice of the spinach pie. The service here is attentive, friendly, and swift.
Honestly, I hope this place never blows up, but I'm not wanting to gate keep. Came here because I looked up best steaks in the area and my God when I tell you, the quality, the price of the service and the food itself cannot be beat anywhere near here. I absolutely mean it. It's basically a bakery and a meat counter and restaurant and bodega looking store all in one You definitely can tell the Argentinian heritage is strong at this place. There is nothing cozy and romantic and cute. This is a place where you come to to have amazing food at a great price. Started off with the provoleta and the empanadas. Empanadas were cooked beautifully and the seasoning for the beef was phenomenal. You can't really mess up cheese and onion or ham and cheese, but those were both phenomenal also. The melted provolone cheese with chunks of tomato was astonishing. For the entrées get this I got the fillet and you get 12 ounces which is 26 ounce cuts for 30 bucks. French fries come with it. Seasoned beautifully cooked exactly the way I wanted it. The pichana was also seasoned perfectly and cooked too perfect perfection. Again dinner for three people with appetizers and two of those being fillets came out to 120 bucks. Again you cannot beat that anywhere.
If you're craving truly authentic empanadas, this place should be at the top of your list. The empanadas are perfectly buttery and flaky, and the fillings are incredibly flavorful. I ordered the beef empanadas with shoestring fries, and both were excellent. The dessert selection also looked amazing, I'm already planning to come back and try more of their fruit tarts. I had the strawberry fruit tart. Service was decent overall, though I would recommend a bit more attentiveness at checkout. Before looking up, the cashier spoke to me entirely in Spanish without attempting to switch to English, which may work for the area but still felt a bit impersonal. Despite that, I'll definitely be returning. The food speaks for itself. Parking: Very limited Indoor Dining: Bright, open, and vibrant atmosphere. Crowd: Busy (a good sign that the food is worth it). They offer a wide selection of desserts, a variety of empanadas, as well as pasta, sandwiches, and more. I will be back for more!
Que rico!! If you know Argentine food this a great place to stop. The empanadas were Good but a little bland, some need salt while others needed just a little less sauce. The traditional milanesa was fantastic; the napolitana had what looked like cheddar cheese on it which is something I'm not used to. The merluza was excellent, light and breaded in more of flour base than bread crumbs or cornmeal. Their service was great, truly loved tha didn't rush us. We were there for about 3 hours. Each server was friendly and attentive to all the customers needs. It is truly a great spot and feels like a little Argentina between the decor and the products!
We haven't been here in several years, and very glad we came back. Interior is very clean, our server was friendly and prompt, and provided excellent service. We both order the Friday special which is a filet mignon in a delicious Malbec red wine sauce. We did not give a five star to this place, because, although everything else was very good, the filet mignon was not of a great cut as we had hoped. It was cooked medium instead of medium rare, and there were areas that were quite tough. All said, we were glad we came here and enjoyed our meal. We will definitely be coming back, as we enjoy ourselves.
Everyone here was wonderful. I went to Argentina about 10 years ago and have missed all the food and wine there. This place is great because it's a restaurant, bakery, butcher, and grocery store all in one. One of the staff was very nice to help me pair a wine with the chorizo and pork belly I bought.and she gave me several options. I bought an assortment of alfajores and some sandwiches to go also. I can't wait to come back and try more of their menu.
Giovanni is an amazing manager--friendly, welcoming, and truly elevates the experience. The service is now excellent, and the food is consistently incredible. We stopped coming for a while due to past issues with rude service and management, but we're so glad we gave it another try. Everything is delicious--the meats, sandwiches, desserts, bread, and wine are all top-notch. Thank you for turning things around!
If you like garlic and chimichurri deliciousness, get yourself to Mercado Buenas Aires! We were seated right away. Our server was helpful. We split the Parilla Completa which comes with beef skirt steak, beef ribs, chicken, salad & fries. And I wanted to try the sausage so I added a chorizo Argentino. Bread and chimichurri sauce plus another salsa that might have been tomatoes & red peppers showed up on our table. The chimichurri sauce is SO GOOD! The skirt steak was excellent as was the super tender chicken. Even the fries were perfect! The ribs were ok. Afterwards we bought a jar of chimichurri sauce, a slice of cheesecake and a chocolate covered cookie thing. All yummy! We'll definitely return.
I love that LA has every type of food at arms reach. I was craving Argentinian food and it did not disappoint. Fantastic jamón y queso white bread to go sandwiches.... However I don't know why you don't have chipas..... donde estas las chipas???? I miss them so much! Please add to the menu! Great empanadas tho

Whenever we visit Los Angeles, we can count on expanding our tastebuds by finding many global cuisines that we don't see (quickly) at home. My brother-in-law took us to this cute neighborhood diner-like Argentinian cafe he recently tried with friends. This cafe is low-key and frequented by Hispanics and other locals, which is a good sign. After all, this café/bakery/grocery store has been in business for over 30 years. Our server, Estefania, was very amicable and welcoming. She greeted us with a gracious smile and welcoming gestures into their large dining room. My brother-in-law recommended the popular Milanesa napolitana or breaded cutlet that originated at Buenos Aires' Napoli Restaurant while I eyed the chorizo Argentino-filled sandwich called "Choripán." Estefania suggested starting our lunches with appetizers like their homemade chorizo Argentino and empanadas. Meanwhile, as I perused the menu, I was drawn to their dessert items but held off ordering since my brother-in-law mentioned the portions were hearty. After placing our lunch orders, Estefania brought us a basket of freshly baked bread with two condiments or dips: chimichurri and salsa criolla (sarza criolla). We ate and dipped our bread with both sauces and decided the vibrant salsa criolla (sarza criolla) intrigued our taste buds more than the familiar-tasting chimichurri. Estefania described the tangy salsa criolla (sarza criolla) as a classic Argentinian condiment of red bell peppers, vinegar, olive oil, onions, tomatoes, and herbs. We almost ate all of the bread with condiments before our appetizers were delivered, but we felt we shouldn't fill up on the delicious bread. FOOD: -Empanadas: we ordered the baked style instead of fried empanadas. One chorizo empanada ($3.05) and one beef ribeye empanada ($3.15). Both empanadas had light crusts and were chockfull of delicious meat fillings. Each empanada had its distinctive flavor. -Chorizo Argentino: we shared one chargrilled, tender, and juicy house-made beef/pork chorizo as we readied our appetites for our lunch. The sausage whet our appetites as we imagined drinking a glass of yerba mate or Malbec wine with our appetizers. $4.00 -Milanesa Napolitana: my husband and brother-in-law ordered this dish but varied their starch (Spanish rice or mashed potatoes). The napolitana-style is described on the menu as a thinly cut, breaded fried steak topped with a slice of ham, cheese, and tomato sauce. My husband said his steak was a bit gristly and dry (over-fried) and didn't care for the plain tomato sauce. He accidentally ordered this menu item instead of the "Milanesa Lomo Napolitana," which included alfredo sauce with tomato sauce. However, my brother-in-law enjoyed his breaded steak cutlet.$21 -Choripán Argentino: grilled Argentine sausage (chorizo) sandwich topped with chimichurri, lettuce, and tomato in a soft mini-baguette. The sandwich was packed with sausage, and the chimichurri sauce added a tangy herbaceous flavor. Choripán is popular grilled sausage sandwich in Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Peru, Bolivia and Venezuela and is named after its combination of ingredients (CHORIzo and PAN batido). $12 When Estefania brought us our bill, she also gave us a plate of alfajores. I had my eyes set on the Panqueques Argentinos (crepes filled with dulce de leche), but I was too full to order it, so eating alfajores sealed the deal. 3.5-stars read more

Absolutely terrible all around. My medium bife ancho stake was of the worst quality and it was so over cooked that i couldn't cut it. My friend's churrasco lomo was so undercooked that it was purple. The orange juice tasted ok but it had about 20 seeds in it. The fries were stale and undercooked. The service was terrible as the waiter would not follow a single simple instruction we gave him (many items ordered were missing). The tres leches cake and the latte were ok. I'm never coming back here and honestly, I have no idea how this place got 4 stars. Insanely low standards. read more
Service was quick and painless, attentive and the restaurant just had a good comfortable vibe to it. Parrilla manolo- plenty of food for more than 2 people! The angus was yummy but a bit fatty. The blood sausage was so rich and had zero iron flavor! Probably the best blood sausage I've had. The chorizo was probably the least favorite as it tasted like chicken sausage, sweetbreads were delicious and the skirt steak was great. Bread and chimichurri- good amount of bread but could use more the the chimichurri and tomatoes they give you. Empanadas- we had beef, spinach and chicken and all were delicious. The bread was soft and plenty of filling. We also had the tomato salad and those tomatoes were very fresh. What a fun find! The parking lot was fun so I knew I was gonna enjoy it! This place has an Argentinan market attached to it with items directly imported. They have a full kitchen with a good wine selection and the food is amazing! I had the steak and it was cooked perfectly (medium rare). They also have deserts galore! Fresh empanadas if you're craving savory or sweet pasties if you want to indulge your sweet tooth! As a true Argentinan establishment should be, it's decorated with soccer legends and big screen tvs along with some tournament memorabilia.... They have servers and they are kind, fast, and accommodating! The best part of coming here was sitting at the counter and having a great conversation with a person from Argentina who could talk about Argentina... and their story! read more

The outside is a little dingy, small parking lot (typical of the valley), BUT, once you walk inside, it is SOOOO cute! Cute booths, display of all the amazing pastries/sandwiches, and meats. Overall ambiance is 3.8/5 Once we walked in, we were greeted and told to pick any booth! Super fast service with the drinks, food, and bringing our order out (5/5) The food was good! Ordered the steak milanesa sandwich (3.5/5), the individual parrilla (5/5, lots of different meats all cooks nicely with excellent flavor), came with fries (5/5, love thin crispy salty fries!), and a ham and cheese empanadas (4/5, mine wasn't warm all the way in the inside, cheese wasn't melted completely). OVERALL I think this place is a solid 4/5. We bought some alfajores to take home since we were so full afterwards! They are delicious! A valet recommended this place to me when we got into a random conversation about the best Argentinian food in Los Angeles. I'm glad I took the tip. This is one of those places that tells tourists everything about LA's hidden neighborhoods and restaurants. Local, popping, friendly and super tasty food. Bread comes with delicious chimmichurri and chopped tomatoes. We ordered sangria and empanadas, followed by the cheese appetizer and steaks all around. The meat was perfectly cooked to order and a very nice cut. By the time we wanted dessert our choice was sold out but we settled for the fruita tres leches. Very light, not too sweet and a generous portion for the table. Our service was friendly and attentive and the ambiance, as others have said, is energetically soccer oriented. We were never made to feel like we didn't belong even if a lot of folks had some pretty rocking jerseys going. Let no one say LA doesn't have the most fascinating choice of places to eat or that Van Nuys on a Saturday isn't a hot spot for good food and wonderful service. Back again. This time we couldn't figure out what we wanted to eat and so I ordered a cappuccino while the two of us sat and snacked on the baguette toast with butter and strawberry jam. Very Continental. LOL We're always trying a new empanada and this time we each tried the corn-stuffed version. Mr. Picky liked it, so I've added it to the list of things we'd try again. I prefer the homemade chorizo version, but keeping his tummy happy makes my life happier as I don't have to listen to complaints!!! LOL Now in the past Mr. Picky has ordered desserts and not followed my lead in ordering the Torta Borracha which is a Moscato drunken cake with leche and cream and a crunchy candy topping sprinkle. He decided that with Christmas coming, he would splurge and do what he wanted to do with his food, so he went straight to ordering dessert. Being totally set up with his past behavior of ordering a dessert, then tasting mine, and then stealing mine!...This time I insisted he try the Torta Borracha and he loved it, so much so that he said he was going to order another piece! Trust me, this is the best dessert on the menu by far! He took a bite and the smile was so big on his face you wouldn't believe it. As usual, I was right! I'll order my own piece later after my entrée. Hey I tried a new entrée because they offer a good selection of Milanesas on the menu. I really enjoyed the version with the white souls, red souls and cheese. I was a bit worried but that wasn't necessary because it turned out to be very tender. Then it was my dessert time. I ordered Torta Borracha. He held to his statement that he would eat 2 and so he got another while I was ordering mine. We decided to take leftovers home but were sad they would not be full pieces, thus ordered another Torta Borracha To go. That made 4 orders through the course of the meal. ************* Fabulous place hidden away in a strip mall. OK, I have to tell you the place was hopping, packed with people, happy kids and families all eating together, quite a racket. This was very obviously a popular place and we hoped the food would prove that was the case. In the middle of the day during the lunch hour the noise level was pretty high. When I walked in and I thought I heard someone banging away and butchering meat, but maybe that was some other noise. Either way, this is a butcher shop and grocery as well as an Argentinian restaurant. Over the course of our meal, waiter Abraham Luiz was fabulous, very attentive and helpful. Upon arrival they deliver soft white rolls with a fragrant Chimichurri and delicious pickled Bell pepper and onion in olive oil dips. They should sell that last one by the gallon, it was so yummy, its sharpness perfect to get you salivating. We started by sharing three empanadas, the beef, cheese and onion, and then their homemade sausage chorizo. Well, chorizo empanada was fabulous, filled with flavors, piping hot and super juicy. I could eat that one all day long, I kid you not! The meal had several wow moments. R's Chicken Milanesa with ham and cheese was very good according to him. The cannelloni stuffed with spinach and cheeses in a pink sauce was fabulous and totally off the charts. Mr. Picky ordered this and was reluctant to give me a bite. I tell you, that was so so so good! I ordered the Parillada for one (they substituted a sausage for the sweetbreads because I am not a huge thymus fan). One expects a little chew with a short rib, but these were so tasty and I didn't mind. The skirt steak was seasoned nicely and falling apart tender. A definite winner for a person in a Meat Mood. Dessert: the three of us ordered a bunch of stuff and we ended up with some take-home packages. Everyone thought the tiramisu was pretty good, but I thought the star was a dish recommended to me by the waiter and which I would definitely order again--Torta Borracha, homemade drunken cake made with Moscato, and some dulce de leche and cream. Wow, yum, wet wonderfulness :-), decided as the designated driver that I'd take it home to finish later! We tried the homemade cheesecake but weren't huge fans, and my first bite of the "Alfajor" left me a bit surprised; I could do without trying that again as it somehow stuck to the roof of my mouth (it's traditionally Peruvian but also eaten in Argentina, two plain cookies glued together with dulce de leche). Finished with cappuccino. Done! The three of us sampled a massive amount of food, but in general I would say there are some real bargains here. $13 for the cannelloni was amazing! Waiter Abraham Luiz assured us that it was a warm and family-friendly place and repeatedly said he hoped we would be back. Believe me, we will be back! He comp'd us a Luna/moon-shaped Factura pastry and I thought it was very good. We can't wait to come back again as we make regular stops here. Be patient when visiting because at certain times the parking can be awful as there aren't many spaces in the little lot. read more

I love this place! They are like Costco where it is a one stop shop for all your needs Argentinian. They have a restaurant, market, butcher shop, baked goods, wine, and pastry. Literally you can go eat this amazing meal then shop so you can take home some goodies. The only downside is the parking lot since it is tiny but there is also street parking. read more

Woohoo! I found a new favorite empanada place! This was my first time getting food from Mercado Buenos Aires and it won't be the last! I ordered for takeout and the food was ready in the time that they estimated. We had the following baked empanadas: * beef * chicken * spinach * skirt steak * corn * ham and cheese I enjoyed all of the empanadas but I would definitely get the beef, chicken, and skirt steak again! They were the most flavorful out of all the empanadas. The dough was fresh and cooked to perfection! We also tried the lomito focaccia sandwich. It was delicious! The steak seemed high quality because it was tender. The bread was also fresh and fluffy. We LOVED all of the food we had from Mercado Buenos Aires! I can't wait to have it again! Next time I will have to try some desserts from their pastry counter! read more

Was so excited to finally try the empanadas here. It's a restaurant and market. They have most of their empanadas already cooked and in a warmer except the ham and cheese ones which are deep fried and supposed to take 10 minutes. Unfortunately the 10 min turned into 45 minutes and without an apology just rudeness from the older women who took our order. There was one who hustling and did apologize but unfortunately it appeared that she never placed our order with the kitchen and then finally placed it 30 minutes later. Once we got our order she didn't even give us chimichuri sauce. read more

I LOVE this place!!! As someone from Bronx, NY, born and raised around every culture and restaurant you can imagine, this restaurant and the people bring me back to my NYC roots in LA!!!
