Upon entering, we felt slightly hurried by the server to decide on drinks and food. We ordered the Bouza Albariño ($14), nicely chilled and enjoyable. The Salmon Sashimi tasted good but came with surprisingly small pieces for $18. The Cazuela de Mariscos had good flavor but too much oil for our liking at $38. The Branzino ($28) was a good deal considering prices today, accompanied by mushroom sauce and mashed potatoes. Our friends finished with the Basque Cheesecake and found it excellent. read more

Extremely disappointing experience -- I would not recommend MesaMar. I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience was bad enough that I feel other diners should know what happened. We made our reservation through OpenTable for 9:45 PM. OpenTable was showing reservations available as late as 11:00 PM, so there was absolutely no indication that arriving at 9:45 would be a problem. We arrived around 9:30 and were seated promptly. Unfortunately, things went downhill from there. We were served bread and ordered dinner. Our salad arrived in a plastic dish, which seemed completely out of place at an expensive restaurant and especially strange because the restaurant was not particularly busy. My wife is a very clean eater and a pescatarian and ordered the fresh catch of the day (snapper) specifically as a whole grilled fish. When it arrived, it looked fried, smelled fried, and tasted fried. We questioned the preparation because it clearly did not appear grilled. Even our server seemed uncertain and went back to the kitchen to check. At that point we were also informed that the kitchen was already closed at approximately 10:00 PM. That is difficult to understand when OpenTable was accepting reservations through 11:00 PM. My wife therefore could not have the fish replaced with what she had actually ordered, nor could she order something else. She essentially had no dinner. I had ordered a shrimp dish with a sauce and asked for some additional bread to enjoy with the sauce. Again, we were told the kitchen was closed. Instead of bread, we were brought potato chips (to enjoy the sauce with?) To make matters worse, we asked for the manager and were told that he had already left for the evening, so there was no one available with the authority to address the situation. The server seemed completely paralyzed about what to do. Despite my wife not eating the incorrectly prepared fish and being unable to order a replacement, we were charged full price for it. I do want to make one thing very clear: our server was a nice guy who was trying his best under circumstances that apparently were beyond his control. I was so unhappy with the overall experience that I genuinely did not feel like leaving a tip, but I also did not think it was fair to punish him for management and kitchen failures, so I still left him 20%. (still less that I might have otherwise left). The evening was essentially ruined. My wife left hungry, it was too late to reasonably start over somewhere else, and what should have been an enjoyable dinner became an exercise in frustration. For an expensive seafood restaurant, customers should be able to expect that their food will be prepared as ordered, that a kitchen will remain operational when the restaurant is still accepting reservations, and that someone in management will be available when a significant problem occurs. I DO NOT RECOMMEND MesaMar. Miami has far too many excellent restaurants and seafood options to accept an awful experience like this. This is not an establishment that respects its customers. Spend your hard earned money at a place that cares more about its customers. read more

Eating at MesaMar is an exquisite experience. This is a chic restaurant & bar serving a fusion of seafood and Spanish cuisine in a beautiful venue. First off, we had been at the annual, private Seville Festival on Alhambra. This restaurant is right off the main street, located on Giralda. If you know Coral Gables, you know Giralda has the best restaurants and a fabulous nightlife. Everything in this restaurant is great. Starting with our server, Lea. She was very attentive, funny and knowledgeable of the menu. We ordered mojitos at first but they were pretty terrible. No sugar, not sweet for a mojito - very weird. We then ordered a bottle of Tempranillo, Conde de Siruela - Robles. This is a very good wine, that made up for the terrible mojitos. Our server arrived immediately with a basket of sliced french baguette bread and butter. The bread was warm and incredibly soft - yummy and good. For appetizers we ordered 2 of the fried calamari, they did not disappoint. These calamari were crunchy, not too bready and fresh, served with a side of marinara sauce. For our mains we ordered the following: The Linguini Del Mar. Which is linguini with shrimp, scallops, calamari and mussels tossed in a vodka sauce. Very tasty and full of seafood. The Boneless chicken with house vegetables. The chicken was very flavorful, even though it was butterflied and flattened. My issue was that the vegetables were predominantly mushrooms - which I'm not a fan of, only 1 piece of zucchini and 1 piece of squash. So, I ordered a side of fried yucca to accompany the meal. They were very scrumptious. For dessert we ordered the Strawberry Pavlova - definitely a misnomer. There were strawberries but no pavlova. A pavlova has a crisp crust and is soft and light on the inside. This desert was neither. No crispy, merengue, more like a mousse with a ton of dulce de leche in it. Ultimately, this restaurant is one to try. I very much enjoyed it and look forward to trying other options from the menu. read more

Loved everything about MesaMar. This was the best salmon I've had in a long time. The lobster tacos were great albeit small appetizer. The Star of the Sea cocktail is perfect for passion fruit lovers (no jalapeños for me but it is optional). Both the chocolate mousse and the almond praline were good. The good thing: they don't have ambient music. That's a hugely welcome relief. Everything else is of an astounding mediocrity. 1. The bread... just little slices of bread. Not even tender. Just little round slices of some bread. Mediocre. 2. My salmon - absolutely and utterly mediocre. Anyone could have done it. Artlessly served smack in the middle of the plate. The little cup of white rice that is part of it, also, just dumped in a little cup. 3. Camarones al ajillo - OK, but, again, just OK. The shrimp were good, but just good. Nothing outstanding. 4. The sliced beef - yes, actually good. Probably the best thing today... and it's supposed to be a fish and seafood restaurant. So that was actually a great choice. 5. The tostones... hard as a rock, over-cooked, thin... awful. I've had better tostones in dozens of Cuban restaurants in Calle Ocho. 6. The service was the poster boy for "lackadaisical" the server didn't even ask once how the food was; never once refilled our water glasses. I asked him a simple question: can I substitute whatever comes with the salmon for the tostones? It took me 3 times to ask that very specific question before he understood. The guy was totally either spaced out or uninterested. But it really showed. Completely forgot: the Yuca Croquetas are excellent; the fish tacos are excellent. I came here today with my two friends to sample the Miami spice 2024 lunch menu. It did not disappoint. I ordered the following - Fried Calamari. This was so, so fresh. The calamari were soft and not chewy at all. The batter was so light and crispy. A great appetizer. My friends had the tuna tacos. I sampled a bit, and they were also very good. The tuna was extremely fresh. For my main I ordered the Linguini with Shrimp. This came with a finger licking garlic, butter, white wine, and parsley sauce. A solid dish. My friends ordered the Branzino and salmon. They stated they were very pleased with their choices. For dessert we all had their flan. This was also pleasant, although I wish there was more caramel sauce served with it. We also had a cappuccino each to round off our lunch. Not only did they look pretty, but they were wonderful too. The place itself is really beautiful, decorated nice and upscale but inviting as well. The service was awesome we had a really attentive waiter. We ordered the Crispy Rice, the Rock Shrimp, the Grilled Octopus, the Paella MesaMar and the Tostones side. Overall, everything was great! Top picks were the crispy rice and the paella. The tostones were average and the grilled octopus lacked a unique flavor. I would have liked more seasoning on it. The rock shrimp was good, definitely filling! Would I come back? Yes! The chef and owner of this restaurant is as talented as she is sweet and incredibly accommodating! She made me a guacamole after I begged her even though it's not a part of her menu! She came out to meet us and even made changes in her menu for my very particular request! The flavors in this restaurant are just exquisite and every single item on the menu is flavorful, unique and cooked to perfection. Lobster tacos are my personal favorite and the flavor is just so exquisite mix of light, tangy, sweet and maybe a tiny bit spicy. The famous dish to get here is custom made fish! It's served by pound and It can be cooked any way you want and make sure that you try that if you come. The atmosphere is classy and very pleasant and the service is exceptional! I was in town on a Sunday night with 3 girlfriends before departing for a cruise. The meal we had at MesaMar was one of the best meals I've ever had in my life! Everything we tried was delicious. They had a special menu, appetizer, main course, and dessert for $60. I ordered the rock shrimp. It was so good in a tasty sauce. The other appetizer options were langoustine, lobster tacos, and salmon sashimi. We also ordered ceviche. Literally every bite of everything I tried was delicious. I had the filet mignon for my main course and it was cooked perfectly and so tasty. My friends wanted to try too. For dessert I had the chocolate mousse with oreo crumbles. It was very good, but the almond praline was even better! Marcos was our server and he was great, very attentive and didn't mind us getting a little rambunctious with mamajuana shots. Came for the Miami Spice Menu and since we were a party of 4 we ordered one of everything. For appetizers the real surprise star was the Salmon Sashimi which was amazing. The Sea Bass and Lobster Ravioli were both also good while the filet was ok and didn't really feel like it belonged with the meal. As for deserts I didn't care for either of them and the Chocolate Mousse looked and tasted cheap. All in all it was a very nice experience just had more misses than hits. read more

OMG! What a treat in the Gables. I loved this place. From the moment I stepped in for dinner, everything was on point. The restaurant is super cozy and warm, the aesthetics are classic but not overwhelmingly intimidated. I came here solo for dinner and felt super comfortable. The staff was so attentive and friendly. We ordered the rock shrimp & the scallops for appetizers, both very flavorful and delicious. For the entrees, the seafood paella was amazing and extremely filling. My hubby had the Chilean sea bass which he said was tender and juicy. I wasn't too crazy about the desserts, however they were not terrible but I think they could have better choices. My wife ordered the Lobster Bisque , rich and creamy base with chunks of fresh lobster . She thought it was great. Our friends heard raves about their fried rice so we tried it. Stir Fried rice with shrimp, chicken and ham in an Asian sauce. Unusual and very good. I wish I had photos, but I don't. I just have sweet memories. My mother and I ,arrived at MesaMar at about 9pm, after arriving to Miami. I wanted to treat my mom and used Yelp to select this eatery. It was perfect. We sat outside in the best weather. The service was incredible. We had several different servers and each was wonderful. Mom ordered the grilled octopus, which came with grilled vegetables and looked like it could be a whole meal if paired with a salad. I ordered the tuna tacos, which erased the weariness from travelling for 12 hours. These two tiny tacos were just delicious. For our meals both of us ordered the fresh catch of the day, which was snapper. She ordered it fried paired with vegetables and I ordered it grilled , paired with beans and rice. Both versions of fish were tasty, but the fried version was over-the-top tasty. The next time I come, I hope to have the ceviche AND the tuna tacos again. This visit was a huge disappointment! We were having our Holiday lunch for 4, and my husband and I told everyone it would be "great". I knew the owner Fifi (or at least who I thought was the owner) from her former restaurant on the beach which I Loved and visited often. When I heard about Mesamar I was happy because I now live in the area. My husband and I visited a few times and liked it. But this was nothing of what I knew. It was so different I wondered if Fifi had sold it because this just wasn't her style at all. Our waiter was just not interested in serving us at all. I had to ask for the wine list. He didn't clear the table of the extra place settings. He took the appetizer order and walked away. We were ready to order. He didn't wait for us to finish the appetizers, or clear the plates to bring the food. He was just trying to stick the main course on the table with everything there. He disappeared often and took a long time to return. Everyone at the table commented about how inattentive he was but didn't want to make a scene. Eventually I got up to find him and told him that he was leaving us unattended. When our food came there was no rice or beans which was a thing I was accustomed to at Fifi's restaurants. 3 of us ordered fish, and he brought no sides and didn't ask about bringing sides. Just fish on a plate. When I asked he basically said he forgot! My husband commented he either has a problem or he doesn't care about his job at all. Aside from this the food was not great. We had, for appetizers, octopus, ceviche, & calamari. They were okay. I was accustomed to great! The fish was okay. When we eventually got some rice and beans they were not good. The rice was overcooked and the beans were completely bland. I then tried to salvage by ordering the Jasmine rice. It took a while and by that time it didn't matter. The wine I had was very Good. But the dessert, their classic flan was terrible. I have had Fifi's flan a million times, and was looking forward to it, but this was no where in the same galaxy. The bottom was actually hard, like with a cake texture. It was so bad I was sorry for recommending this place for the office Holiday lunch! This server was terrible and basically ruined our Holiday lunch. It was 4 of us and the bill was over $300.00. We usually tip 20%, but don't like stiffing servers so we did leave $40.00. There are so many other places our Holiday lunch for 4 would have been better. That was my last time there! Good luck because they are going to need it. read more

I noticed that a few lights were out and some areas by where we were seating were too dark. Service was ok. Perfect temperature, excellent taste. For appetizers we ordered the yuca frita with a delicious tartar sauce. Then I ordered grilled salmon with grilled veggies. Salmon was delicious.
