I tried their "adult happy hour" deal which comes with a hot dog and a can+a shot. I chose the Harlem dog with a beer and a tequila shot. For $10, I think it's a decent deal. The server Mark kindly introduced himself and remembered my name and my friend's name and checked on us. It can get extremely packed and chaotic after 6pm. My only criticism is the lack of other food items but their hot dogs are pretty good. Also, it seems that they don't give out cheese balls anymore. read more

Mess Hall is exactly what this neighborhood needed, a small pub-like venue with beer on tap, bourbon flights and my favorite, pickle-back shots. YAZZZZ! Mess Hall is everything you want it to be! I am huge lover of staying local for shopping, dining and DRINKING and Mess Hall is my new Go-to spot. I'm a tough critic and wasn't expecting to fall in Love with this local spot so fast. First, you are greeted by the CUTEST vintage- looking sign and a warm and woodsy vibe that feels worn in like your Favorite pair of jeans. The bartender was so sincere and helped me find the best cocktail for me. I am usually a beer drinker (which they have a huge selection of, by-the-by) but seeing all the fruity cocktails, I opted for one (maybe two) of them. The Garden Party is seriously fantastic, and the bartender is generous with the pour, so I recommend pacing! I was thrilled with the free cheese puffs that I ate my fair share of with a nostalgic giddiness. I would never buy these for myself, but having them there , and FREE, well sign me up! I also enjoyed a fabulous Hot Dog more reminiscent of a Gastro Pub then a hot dog cart if you are ranking Hot- Dog-Deliciousness. My favorite part about this place is there is a real sense of community. I was able to meet the owner Shanna, who took time to talk to us and make sure we were happy. She was lovely, and genuine which is rare in this city! I felt like I was in an episode of Cheers, as everyone seemed to know everyone and was inclusive. This is my favorite local bar. They have an extensive whiskey/bourbon selection, and they keep their list updated. Staff is AMAZING! Crowd is very diverse and mainly people coming in after work. Used to be a 5* - hopefully it'll maintain the 4*. When they first opened it was local, jovial and had a nice sense of community - even when decently crowded. Now it gets absolutely swarmed and the clientele - how do I put this - well it seems to attract a very young, very loud, often obnoxious and overly drunk crowd now. Mess Hall is a cool bar with fun snacks and cheap specials! Just don't bring any kids there when the bartender with the bandana is working. When I walked in she immediately pigeon-holed me as an annoyance bc I had brought along my kids. She didn't acknowledge me and was quite rude in her demeanor almost encouraging me to leave. Haven't been here in a while. Tonight my return shows they've decided to up their game. Cocktails on point and well balanced. Not too strong or weak, just perfect. Newer revamped menu looks good and has a much better selection. If they can get their WiFi figured out better it would be a blessing as the cell service in the back can be non existent. Nice bar in my former neighborhood. Would have merited 4-5 stars if not for the condescending female bartender last night. Your knowledge of spirits and alcoholic beverages may be deep and wide but when a customer asks for a general recommendation, the least you can do is to come up with 1 or 2 suggestions and not snark back. Heard about this place, while I was in bar "jail" in LA. Came home and wandered in with one of my besties. Over 5 million bourbons/whiskeys (I exaggerate) and 40,000 beers (again with the exaggerations). Seriously, I dig this place. It's small, but large enough for you and your cronies. The bartenders are awesome (Saturdays: Cherry and Dominic) and they know their bourbon and beer. The ONLY thing they're missing is food. Those cheese balls got a little tired and you'll be 3 sheets to the wind, before you know it, if you don't eat something, but the will let you bring outside food in. I'm glad they finally opened a bar just a few steps from my apartment, but I still find myself going to the same old places a little further away. Mess Hall (it just says "BAR" outside) is a cozy but lively place disproportionately packed with millenials. Nice selection of beverages and I think they even have some foods (though I've not tried them). Since it's usually hard to find an open bar stool and I'm about 2x as old as the average patron I'm still warming up to the place. Still glad that they're here and wish them success. read more

Came here today with a friend and was happy to learn they do happy hour 7 days a week! So we each ordered a beer and a pickle back shot. That was my first pickle back! The ambience was cool - cozy and they had Roger Rabbit playing, projected on the wall. They have a cute outdoor seating area too. This is a hip bar with a neighborhood feel. After prowling Manhattan speakeasies with my local friends, I can say that the best cocktail consumed on my trip was had at Mess Hall. Try the Magic Bulleit! The service was ok. It was the middle of the day and the bartender was busy chatting with a couple of regulars and the bar back was busy cleaning but we didn't have to wait too long for service.
