Forgive me Yelpers, for I have sinned. It's been...a long time...since my last confession. You see, I've lived in Jacksonville for many years. I've visited Metro Diner a number of times and have been to 3 of the locations. I just finally tried the chicken and waffles and have seen the light! My family was looking for breakfast yesterday. We headed to Arden's Kafe to try the buffet only to find a sign on the door alerting us to a holiday closure. No problem, I thought, as I knew Metro opened a location on US17. Of course it was packed and we put our names on the list. After about 40 minutes, we were seated. My mom and brother ordered egg dishes and enjoyed them. Boring! I ordered the half chicken and waffles, white meat. You know when you order a dish and it's too much food but it's so good your brain wants to keep eating but your stomach is about to explode? Yeah, I had that. The chicken was crispy, not greasy, and ridiculously moist. The waffle was light, crispy, and topped with a yummy strawberry butter. The dish is served with their sweet and spicy sauce which is syrup with a few shakes of hot sauce mixed in. Let me just say that bite of chicken with a little crispy skin, dipped in the sauce paired up with a bite of waffle smeared with butter? So incredibly balanced and so very tasty. I kept saying how good it was during the meal that my family likely thought I was crazy. So, in summation, Metro Diner serves a lot of good dishes. I want to rate it higher but I can't statistically. I've been to the Metro four times. Two times I loved my meals and two times I hated them. This last time was my fault as I knew better before ordering the huevos rancheros which translates to "big freaking sloppy mess of non traditional stuffs". It is also my fault because I lived in Texas for almost two decades and know my authentic Mexican/Tex Mex. The dish was a sloppy mess of eggs, cheese, jalapeños, black beans and crazy large triangles of double deep fried bread. However, if you are more interested in quantity over quality then this dish is definitely for you! It doesn't taste bad, it just doesn't taste that good. None of the flavors compliment each other. For the laymen tongues out there that think La Nop is the best Mexican food there is (or if you even think of Taco Bell as Mexican food) you can just skip right over my review. My eyes seriously popped when I saw it set down in front of me. I did a double take at the waitress and kind of chuckled. It feeds four easily and it costs less than 10 bucks. So I ate about a fourth then stuck the rest in a to-go box. I stopped at the grocery store to pick something up before heading home and by that time I realized it wasn't even worth saving and tossed it in the trash. I'll still go back to the Metro though I probably won't get adventurous with the menu again. read more

It's like a Waffle House on Steroids! Delicious food, I recommend the chicken & Waffles. When it's on it's the best chicken and waffles I've had. My only two issues I've had was the last couple times I've ate here (takeout) I believe the chicken was cooked in old/burnt oil. The chicken looked burnt and didn't taste good, but that was twice out of approximately 12-15 times that I've ate from here. The other issue although I ignore it when I come here is the price of the chicken and waffles. I understand you get what you pay for, but at the same time it feels pricey to me. I could be wrong. Regardless I still recommend coming here, they have a nice staff that will make suggestions if you're having trouble picking from the menu and they are all very hard workers, so make sure to tip well because they earn it. They do not serve alcohol here but you can bring a bottom or two of champagne and they can make mimosas for you which is awesome! I would recommend this place to anyone who enjoys all sorts of food. I will stick to the one on San Jose Blvd. or the one at the Beaches.. I might give this one another go.. The food just didn't taste as good as the one on San Jose. OK. So I gave it another go and I gotta give this one up. 1.) Amazing customer service!! 2.) Delivery of food is pretty darn good! 3.) Quality/taste of the food.. Meh. Maybe my taste buds have changed over the years as I do frequent eateries that pride themselves on natural and organic food that is locally sourced. I was disappointed in the cheesy grits. If you love cheesy grits be prepared to dig into a good size cup with a little bit of sprinkled shredded cheddar cheese on top. That is NOT the cheesy grits that I am used too. Ugh! The pancakes were OK. I was looking for a more homemade taste like that of a creamy, fluffy your grandma made these hot cakes off the griddle taste. The coffee.. if you are a coffee lover at heart, again, meh. Granted, I love my Bold Bean and Cool Moose Cafe coffee. All in all, my humble opinion is that this was a basic breakfast. I have been to the other Metro Diner locations, so when I got an invite to lunch at this location I was excited. However, I have to admit I have only had breakfast at the other locations so I was determined to break out of that rut. First off, parking is easy and plentiful, since it is part of the Roosevelt mall area. Second, they have a good amount of seating outside, so give that a consideration. Lastly, there are half a dozen seats at the bar you should consider because you get to see the kitchen action, which is both entertaining and reassuring (think clean and fresh). On to the food. There were a lot of good choices and some conflicting reports on Yelp, so I decided to fend for myself. Here is what my table mates and I chose: Philly Cheese Steak - served on a brioche bun, it got rave reviews for flavor and consistency. My friend was impressed it was not swimming in grease. Chicken Pot Pie - my choice, and I errant my opted for the "jumbo" and ended up taking half of it back to the office. Good flavorful, my only complaint was the thickness of the crust. Chicken and Waffles - huge dish and ordered by one of every three people who were there. I got a small waffle taste and the strawberry butter on the waffles was amazing. I have heard about this place for some time now. While running errands we passed by when i was hungry so my wife and i stopped in. This was our first time here and the waitress Celesta told us a brief description about the restaurant with another waitress she was training. They were both very friendly, helpful, and quick. My wife ordered the French dip and fries. I went with the bold burger and chili. My wife was very happy with her meal. The taste of my burger was terrific. The only complaint i had was i ordered well done and a portion was red for some reason. I let the waitress know after i ate most of it and was already getting full. (It was really good.) She still offered to make a fresh burger. Since i ate most of it i declined. The manager came out a few minutes later and asked if i wanted a fresh one to go. I'm not a big fan of reheated burgers so i declined again. They ended up giving a discount on my burger. I realize mistakes and problems arise in business and i feel they excelled at resolving it. I will probably be there a lot more getting the other marks that looked good which i haven't tried. read more

Cute diner. Definitely busy since it was Christmas Eve. However, service was great and the food was quickly delivered. Definitely filling. I had a Belgian waffle dusted with powder sugar along with the Honest to Goodness Grits and two scrambled eggs. My significant other had the Bissell breakfast and couldn't even finish it. His father had to help him some. In addition to that, his father had the biscuits and gravy breakfast and enjoyed that thoroughly. Our coffees were great and the orange juice was good too. They luckily had a sling for my daughter's car seat to sit in which was nice. Restroom was clean but the plumbing was off a bit. Just had to hold the handle down a bit longer to flush since it wasn't an automatic toilet. Manager was also out working the floor which is nice to see in the restaurant. I didn't care much for the advertisement placemats but I know they sponsor the restaurant so I can't complain too much. Not too expensive either and the portions were a good size. I've been frequenting Metro Diner since it's inception. I'm a big fan of their menu, service, and speed. I've never been to this particular location before, but it's excellence matched the other establishments. Pro tip: bring your own bottle of champagne, and they will bring out plastic wine glasses for you to make mimosas. Stopped in for breakfast. This is not our usual location but tried it out. Mistake! The chicken and waffles was a big disappointment. Tasted like boiled chicken. No seasoning apparently. Although the manager assured us it had been marinated for 24 hours. I don't think so. Second order was no better. Between us we maybe finished one piece of nasty chicken. Well we were regular at the oldest, first, before they sold out to the man people. You know before DDD and all of that. We used to go for breakfast before church. Now they are popping up everywhere. So we tried the one on Roosevelt blvd location and luckingly just beat the crowd. I had the my off the special board some Cajun shrimp n grits and the wife got the French toast. Mine was a couple of frozen grit cakes, Then some canned soup that they put some Cajun seasoning in it and throw it out there. I will say the cook on the shrimp was spot. I've been to many a Metro Diner before but this experience was probably my favorite. I went in for breakfast on a busy Sunday morning and I had the crab cake eggs Benedict with hash browns and any and every southerner's lifeblood; a sweet tea. Never had eggs Benedict before but I think it's my new favorite dish. The perfect texture and melty goodness of a poached egg on a beautiful and tasty crab cake on a perfectly toasted English muffin topped with a creamy and delicious hollandaise sauce. Food was 5/5. Service was also 5/5. Our waitress was incredibly sweet and friendly and kept checking on us and talked to us and made us feel like we belonged there, kinda like a homey environment. The sweet tea was on par with my grandmothers and I was in absolute heaven. Can't wait to go back next time I'm in town. read more

We went during the middle of a lunch rush on a Sunday. The wait wasn't bad at all, 15 minutes tops. We were seated outside and it was a nice day out. Our server was very friendly and always checked on us. I got the meat loaf. It was a good size portion of food and was very tasty. The meat loaf was moist and not ketchup-y like some places are. I had the ribeye steak and eggs today. This place is always crowded. I guess it is that way for a reason. The steak is thin so even ordering it rare means it comes out medium well but it had good flavor. I got it with some vegetables instead of the hashbrowns and the sautéed zucchini was excellent. The eggs were done correctly and over medium. There's a good vibe in this place. The service was great and friendly, food was fast even though it was crowded. The mushrooms were right out of the can a little disappointed but over all it was delicious. My friend got the chicken and waffles and he's hard to please but he said it was delicious as well. I had to go see what all the hoopla was about. While I expected more of a turn of the century decor to go along with the diner theme (being that I'm a Jersey boy) the place looked welcoming enough.
