So I guess it is my destiny to eat at all of the Metro Diners in the Jacksonville area. There could be worse things in life to do, eating at Metro diner is not on anyone's worse list. These places are consistently amazing. On my visit here I decided the Western Omlet was the delishousness that I needed and was I right. Yummy overload. The omlet was overflowing with so much on the insides to the outsides I could have shared it...but I didn't. Too good! Then they topped it with tasty salsa oh my so good. This monster of a breakfast was also served with crispy fried potatoes but I had hardly any room for those delicious morsels but I did manage to eat a few. Our waitress was on the spot with refills when the drinks got low and was very attentive and quick to take away the dishes when our meal was finished. Apple cobbler was the dessert of the day but there was not a square inch of tummy space for another bite to fit. I've been to several of the Metro Diner locations with the first being the San Marco location almost 20 years ago. This location in the past was a hit or miss. This last visit was definitely a HIT. I guess I prefer dinner. I really like this location because it's actually closer to my home and the service has always been great. Need ketchup? Extra Mayo? A side of ranch? An extra plate? Check. Check. Check... The menu is diverse enough for any palate. There's plenty of seating for large groups. The service is totally reasonable during peak times and my food this time was flavorful as well as generous in portions. You'll need a to-go box. This last visit, I opted for the Bold City Burger which consisted of provel cheese, caramelized onions, bacon, sausage, fried jalapeños, lettuce, tomato and garlic aioli on a brioche bun. Omg so delicious! I asked for a side of the garlic aioli in which to dip my fries. Get that. FYI: Provel is a white processed cheese product particularly popular in St. Louis cuisine, that is a combination of cheddar, Swiss, and provolone cheeses. Provel has a low melting point, and therefore has a gooey and almost buttery texture at room temperature. It is the traditional topping for St. Louis-style pizza. [Wikipedia] It was fantastic on the Bold City Burger! Overall, I think I could be a true regular at this location if I were more committed to my CrossFit gym. This is the second Metro Diner that we've patronized, the first being the original in San Marco. This one is newer but still has the magic of the original. It's also larger, with better parking and outdoor seating. This place is always (and I mean always) busy but we've been pretty lucky and have been seated almost immediately every time. The people who work here really seem to enjoy it, and that says a lot. Lots of genuine smiles and helpful attitudes. The food is cooked to order but comes out fast and fresh. We've tried a variety of foods here and everything has been great. Obviously, we are big breakfast people, but once a friend tried the BBQ bacon burger that was on special and he really enjoyed it. Like the original, the chefs here know how to cook a perfect medium egg and I do appreciate it. The servings are very generous and they will offer half portions but silly me forgets to ask every time. One of their best foods, hands down, is their Avocado toast. It's on a 7 grain bread with tomato slices and is extremely generous. I highly recommend it - it's on their "lighter" portion of the menu, but it's a bit too decadent to be light if you know what I mean. Their coffee is good, standard diner coffee and they keep the temperature perfect. (I know it sounds silly, but too hot coffee is a crime at breakfast when you need that caffeine fix.) The menu is large and there really does seem to be something for everyone on it. I know there are many more dishes that I need (yes, need) to go back and try. The only thing I have an issue with is that the bathrooms are located behind and through the drink station, so you have to be very careful not to bump into staff as they are getting drinks for customers. I thought I had written this review years ago! Apparently not...I have been to this location several times over the past few years and two things always remain the same. First, the customer service is outstanding. The staff make you feel welcome and take pride in their restaurant. Second, the food. The food is consistent, if you had ordered the chicken and waffle 4 years ago, it would be the same as today and the portion would be the same. The portions are gigantic. You will never leave Metro Diner hungry! The service is just impeccable. It always has been. I remember my first time visiting, there was a tiny piece of food on a knife I wasn't even using and the waiter took it along with the wrapper for the napkin to see who had wrapped it. They apologized over and over. I wasn't upset in the slightest but they really cared about the service they were providing, which has stayed true through today. The food just cannot be beat. Everything is scratch made and care and soul. You can tell that time and attention goes into every dish they serve. They have new specials are the time that really tempt you to step away from your select 5-6 comfort zone dishes, but no matter what you get, you won't be disappointed. My favorites: Chicken and waffle with chicken tenders, the mushroom and swiss omelette, corned beef has with eggs, the monte cristo sandwich, any of the special benedicts, the shrimp and grits and the Yo hala. But honestly you can't really go wrong with anything! Every location is great, the service is great at any one of them and the food is pretty much the same. So here's the story! My first visit to Metro Diner a few months ago was a bit intimidating. Intimidating??? How??? The Huevos Rancheros took me by surprise when I realized it wasn't spicy as I assumed the jalapeños would have made it which was great for me being a person who's a bit wimpy when it comes to eating spicy foods. The YO HALA... on the Square made me shout, "Yo Holla!!!!" The presentation alone was breathtaking. I mean just envision two thick succulent slices of french toasted, challa Hawaiian bread stuffed with a cream cheese mixture, then draped with a blueberry-strawberry compote and powdered sugar. Wouldn't that make you shout, "Yo holla?" LOL! Metro Diner's Charleston Shrimp and Grits stole my heart at deep fried grit cakes then to infuse them with cheese, roasted peppers, and andouille sausage.... I nearly lost my mind! Their Meatloaf Plate tasted great but, meatloaf is my least favorite meals as I've eaten too much meatloaf, in my household, growing up. But to finish the evening with the HOLY DAVOLI!!! Sometimes it can be a hit and miss, but they do have a good selection; Chicken and Waffles to Omelets. Huevos rancheros to a mix selection of eggs Benedict. Monte Cristo to sausage and gravy. The place: Be especially careful, the floors can be slippery, and has been a problem since it opened. I've even seen employees take a tumble. Otherwise tables are clean as well has the business. The service: Never had a server that wasn't friendly, attentive, and kept us in drinks. The food comes hot, as everyone helps with delivery to the table. My favorites are classic eggs Benedict, sausage and gravy, and huevos rancheros. Sometimes the hollandaise is separated. That's a miss. Atop crab cakes boasting with plenty of cream lay two perfectly poached eggs drizzled with flavorful hollandaise sauce. The usual side would have been hash browns but I was feeling like keeping things lighter on this fine Sunday morning so I opted to sub the hash browns for a side of fruit- fresh sliced strawberries, blueberries, and sliced bananas. Yesterday, I went all in with a generous sample, compliments of the chef, of the Charleston Shrimp and Grits!! This take on an old favorite is simply outstanding! Deep fried grit cakes infused with cheese, red pepper, and Andouille sausage are drizzled with shrimp sauce that cloaks more shrimp, more Andouille, peppers and onions. They finish this food porn with crisp bacon and green onion! It was extraordinary but I wanted to eat good and be awake to drive home! The sample seriously curved my appetite because it was rich, creamy comfort perfection meant for a day food then sleep so I devoured the sample and went in another direction... Steak and eggs! I know... But trust me that steak and eggs, although delicious, had nothing on the weight of the Charleston Shrimp and Grits. Know that I will be back to try my tummy at a full portion soon! We came here for lunch after reading a newspaper article claiming the on the top ten for burgers in the city. This restaurant is easy to see from 3rd street. It is in the corner of the shopping center. There is outside seating that is also a covered area. The outside is well kept. The inside has all floor space covered with tables. The tables and chairs have minimal wear and tear. The food is a little over priced. The food is made fresh. The plates we ordered was what we expected as far as taste. When we arrived the floor has full. Our server worked hard and succeeded at keeping all her area happy. There was an employee wearing a red bandanna that was yelling and being rude to people toward the back. It was easy to see her and hear her yell from the main floor where we were. So when I was out and about with mom not too long ago, she was starved for a good breakfast, and we were in the neighborhood of the Roosevelt location, so i figured we'd give it a whirl. Atmosphere: I like the layout, it's not crunched to where you're elbow to elbow with the people at the next table, and the vibe is laid back and comfortable. Theres plenty of tables and seats to accomodate the fiercest of breakfast crowds, yet I'd come as early as possible if I were you. Hungry doesn't pair well with waiting, and you never know... Food: I ordered the Country Benedict (2 poached eggs, sausage patties, and caramelized onions), and mom had the Corned Beef Hash with poached eggs and toast. A sigh of relief escaped me as I dug in, took the first bite and savored the rich trifecta of runny eggs, soft gooey onions, and meaty sausage. The home fries were a welcome addition, not over or undercooked with just the right crunch. Mom thoroughly enjoyed her dish as well, the portions are astronomical in size, so when she couldn't finish, I went in for the kill. Nice texture to the hash...it wasn't dry nor soggy and I happily scooped it up onto the toast with the egg and devoured it "last meal on earth" style. Happy Happy Happy. Service: I'm so bad with names. And receipts. But I will say that our server was on top of things from the get-go, and he was friendly and very helpful in describing a few menu items that we had questions about. The joint was packed wall to wall, but there was never a period where we were waiting long on drink refills and the food arrived faster than I anticipated. I've visited every other Metro in Jax at least once (and the San Jose location more times than I can count!)...so it was only right that the Roosevelt location was our choice for dinner last night when we were over in that area. What's not to like about Metro? Friendly service, tasty eats, huge portions (leftovers for the next day!), good clean atmosphere - right? Sadly, last night at the Roosevelt Metro-not so much! It always pains me to have to report a less than optimal experience anywhere. But let me start with the positives: a Fred Flintstone sized hunk of meat hanging over the edge of my plate! I have ordered the Country Fried Steak almost exclusively since I first tried it at Metro a couple of years ago. Accompanied with real mashed potatoes and fresh green beans last night - and don't forget the thick creamy sausage gravy- it was as good as ever! Our server was also attentive and we couldn't have asked for much more in that department. My coffee was nice & hot enough for me (and I'm hard to please in that respect!), plus it was bold and flavorful. Sounds promising so far, mais oui?! But what could have been a fairy tale turned out to be more of a nightmare for this Goldilocks! I should've known when we first walked in and noticed the plexiglass dividers between our booth and the booths on either side of us were just filthy. Then when Daniel sat down, his feet literally slid on floor beneath him because it was greasy and wet. Let me just say that I raised twin boys as a single Mom and I've seen some pretty gnarly things lol. I'm not a clean freak. But there is a certain basic standard of cleanliness that should be expected in a restaurant. Especially in this time of Covid. The plexiglass looked as if it hadn't been cleaned in weeks. Maybe ever. I would've taken photos, but didn't want to disrupt out neighbors. There were smudges, smears and fingerprints, oh my! It would've only taken a minute or two to wipe this down. Then I opened my silverware, which was wrapped neatly in a napkin. My spoon was crusty with food debris and the fork was almost as bad. Someone rolled these utensils up in the napkin, so surely they would've noticed?! We started looking around and saw that the floor of the entire place was dirty. Bits of food and fallen forgotten used napkins everywhere. Indeed, there was a yellow caution sign on the floor right next to our booth, due to a spill. But at no time during our visit did anyone attempt to clean anything. And there were no more than 5 tables occupied at a time while we were there. Daniel said the mens room was nasty. The Ladies room was not too bad, but could've been cleaner. The last straw was when we boxed up our leftovers. A very long dark hair which was not mine or Daniel's appeared on the lid. Enough. As good as my Country Fried Steak was, it will not bring me back to this particular Metro! What should have been a relaxing meal out on a rainy Sunday evening was pretty much negated by the overall lack of cleanliness. I will still go to Metro, but not this location. read more

I bragged on this sandwich for 2 days granted I've never come to this location but I didn't feel that was an issue. This waitress came over with fries and my son took the plate because he ordered fries but we recognized that wasn't our order the waitress took the plate back from my son and gave it to the correct table . We started paying more attention to the kitchen cooks put plates in the window chicken fell off one of the plates the waitress picked it up with her hands and put it back on the plateThey had been missing up orders the whole time we were there. Our food finally comes out and I'm confused because There's a roll 2 chicken tenders covered in cheese. Our last visit a few weeks ago was a good experience however my wife's biscuit and gravy came out a little cold and they needed to heat it up. They also had someone out front asking for donations.
