Experienced the oddest experience here, targeted the second we walked in. The owner said we were wrong the second we walked here and leave. Also called 5 cop cars where my 6 year old daughter asked if she was going to jail. Shocked at the service and shocked at the attitude of the manager. Atmosphere - 5 Service - 5 Food - 5 Fine Italian dining with 50% off wine on Mondays! Good selection of appetizers, entrees, and desserts. The eggplant parmigiana was incredibly rich and hearty. The marinara sauce helped to keep the dish light since it was doused in cheese (also a good thing). I also enjoyed the dessert. I completely forgot the name, but it's reminiscent of the chocolate covered cherry candies, but this time also with ice cream. Great way to finish a meal. read more

Metro North is a solid and (I think), wildly underrated Princeton restaurant. We have been dining here for years for various special occasions... Mother's Day... birthdays... even my rehearsal dinner 5.5 years ago was at metro north, and they always provide an enjoyable meal with great service. Drinks are always top notch and there's something on the menu for everyone. They have a beautiful outdoor seating area which is great in the summertime, and their private room upstairs is great for parties (we used it for our rehearsal dinner). Conveniently located right near the Princeton train station and close to route 1, they have their own parking lot so you don't have to worry about the nightmare of finding metered parking in town. Tonight we had the artichoke francaise for the appetizer which was very good. For entrees I tried a new item on the menu.. Chicken Ricotta, which was so delicious!! I came here for a few random weekday dinners. First off - this place has a rather eerie feeling every time I went in that it was empty (like ghostly empty). However - the important stuff is of course - the food!!! I think of this is as heart American Italian + bar food. It was hearty and had rather large portions. However, it was mostly standard fare - nothing too interesting local or creative - which is why I didn't give it five stars. The dinner selection is that of a typical Italian restaurant plus more since they have burgers and a large selection of specials. Truffle fries and bang bang shrimp were so good! They have style here! Ordered a portobelllo mushroom stuffed with crab meat. Nice but cold inside.. meaning it was in a fridge and microwaved likely. The ambiance is relaxed and nice. My good friend had the sautee'd mushrooms. There were lots of people ordering italian dishes which all looked great. Nice super light super crispy outside sourdough bread with seasoned olive oil to nibble. Like their style and no.. didn't send the appetizer back to be heated .... it was super fresh and mostly fresh crab.. so it was good anyway........ in some cases a send back isn't needed... this was one... the wine and lemon sauce was super. read more

We came here for Farher's Day early 5pm diner. Place was empty, waiter seat us immediately at a big table. This seams like a seafood place, where a lot of their meals are contain crab/shrimp/mussels... To start we had eggplant tower and it was delicious, the far diavolo mussels was ok. My in laws both ordered some special meal with crab cake which they've told that they ran out of crap cake at 5pm on a popular father's fay!! they were not happy and they had to use shrimp instead or change orders! I ordered Crab meat scampi capellini, the taste was great but the portion was so tiny even for a tiny girl like me (4"11), the meal cost $29, i was expecting something a big larger to take home leftover just like any other Suburban restaurants. I received a birthday coupon from Metro North so I decided to give it a shot and invited my friend Raysa to join me for dinner. She ordered the Filet mignon and said it was good, but not amazing. I ordered the mussels. They weren't very flavorful and there were tons of big chunks of tomatoes, which isn't what I expect when ordering white mussels. Instead it should be predominantly garlic and white wine. I also ordered a salad which was HUGE. It was good, but it's a little intense to be staring down at a trough of salad Here's where things got a little iffy: our server started giving off the vibe that he was ready to seat new guests. However Raysa hadn't finished her dinner, but still he kept coming over to see if she'd finished...like every couple minutes....it seemed like he was super hyped to get our table turned over, which wasn't cool. Raysa wanted dessert and so she ordered the lava cake. She said the inside was ok but the outside cake was almost inedible! I loved Metro North! It does get busy on weekends so I'd suggest making reservations. I thought the food and drinks were great. I loved the atmosphere and such a cute date night spot. Yes, it's a little noisy but nothing too bad. I had the calamari, which was amazing. It's suppose to be spicy, but it's nothing drastic. It's served with kalamata olives and fried jalapeños... yum !! For a long time the Rusty Scupper occupied a spot on Alexander Road in Princeton, before finally shutting down and lying vacant for a couple years. Recently, a restaurant called Metro North opened up, taking the place of the former Rusty Scupper. Metro North had a nice decor on the inside, giving a warm, fireplace type of feeling. However, at lunch, it was fairly empty and the bartender and staff seemed more intent on preparing for the dinner crowd than attending to the few customers who were there during the daytime. The bar, though small, had a nice setup and the place seemed like it would be nice for an older crowd to give to sip some whiskey with friends later in the evening. My dad ordered one of the bar specials, a gyro, which he found to be very good. I went with the chicken piccata. Most chicken piccata's have a different preparation, with some having a more butter based sauce and some featuring a more lemon based sauce. This featured a stronger lemon flavor, giving the dish a bit of a sour tinge. The dish was slightly above average, but overall with the lack of personal attention and seemingly unconcerned staff, Metro North failed to stand out. Great place for dinner if you're visiting Princeton and looking for an intimate dinner away from the campus craze and with free parking. If you're not, then I would recommend Triumph for dinner. The Beef Stew & Risotto ($24), Stuffed Shrimp & Risotto ($29), and Mongolian Beef ($26) were all from their special menu. The food came out just as expected, if not better. My only complaint is I wish they turned up the heater during the winter because our meal got cold fairly quickly. Still good nonetheless. Overall, my experience here was great from the food, service, and setting. It is on the pricier side, but sometimes that's just what you have to pay for a nice intimate dinner. I would come back and recommend to others as well. Don't let the exterior fool you. My mother and I got off work and wanted a nice meal. Naturally, we went to one of our favorites as a treat. We enjoyed a fantastic and decadent barratini and avocado appetizer. Absolutely mouth watering! So many flavors. The ambiance is timeless. The details of the wood, the stone wall, the Japanese lanterns and the booths set the scene. I did not get a good look of the inside of this restaurant, but it seemed very casual. I sat outside to eat on a nice night. The menu had interesting options to choose from. The pricing was a little much on lots of menu choices. The service was appreciated and the food came out in a timely matter. I ordered the broccoli rabe bowtie ($18). It was bowtie pasta with Italian sausage, broccoli rabe and white beans in a garlic and olive oil sauce. This was put together nicely. There was plenty of sausage and white beans present. I wish the sausage was of the hot variety, but it was still good. Everything was cooked just right as well. The broccoli rabe in the garlic and olive sauce was probably my favorite part of the entree. It was a well-constructed dish. Will I go back? I would. read more

My husband and I are frequent visitors of Metro Cafe in Ewing and were staying in the Princeton area and were pleasantly surprised that the owners had a secondary location. We had a good meal in a great atmosphere. They are on Alexander Road and have been recently affected by construction that blocks access to their restaurant. This didn't affect them in the least! They were able to handle reservation snafus quickly and effortlessly. I'm sure we'll be back again soon! read more

I have been to Metro North numerous times for dinner. It is actually my son's favorite restaurant, partially because its off the beaten path. In addition to good food, their drinks are yummy. I went to Happy Hour last night, my first time to the HH, and the bartender was friendly, made a very stiff drink, and it was only $5. WIN, WIN, WIN. Also grabbed a burger which did not disappoint. A solid choice, especially for the Princeton area, with plenty of parking. Really interesting décor, the room in the back can be a little noisy, the best seats are the semi-circular booths. The food is very good, not pretentious, and tasty. Everything looks and tastes freshly prepared and home cooked - I happened to notice a cook freshly breeding calamari when the door swung open (they fry pickled cherry peppers and olives with the calamari - delicious). The salads are a real highlight. Specials are usually very good, but the items at the bottom of the price range, like the hamburger, are excellent too. Food is not over salted like many restaurants in this price range, which I'd describe as medium priced. Sharing a appetizer or one of their salads (which are big enough for two) is a nice way to go. If you want the arugula salad, I found the lemon-cello dressing to be too sweet. Cocktails are served well-prepared and expeditiously. Dessert is not a strong point. Service is very accommodating and watchful, the owner is often there - and they sometimes don't get reservation timing perfect, but it's never ridiculous and they're always moving things along. Be careful when the McCarter is having a play. It gets crowded, but they keep the food coming out of the kitchen. We've never had a dragged-out dinner, no matter how crowded it is. This is one of those places where the yelp rating is damaged by infrequent diners with silly little complaints. Don't listen to the crybabies. read more

A bit pricey, but quiet out of the way place for lunch. For $17 I expected a larger serving of ravioli, but it left room for a very yummy bread pudding dessert. Good drinks, excellent appetizers. To be honest, I'm usually very disappointed with restaurants in Princeton, so while this wouldn't normally be at the top of my list, for Princeton I was very pleased and will definitely return if I wish to eat in the area. Not downtown, but that is actually a big plus. Ample parking and very, very convenient if driving from Rt. 1. Unfortunately Princeton = $$$. You can eat downtown for 50-100% more than what you pay here, so while not a "bargain" it is acceptable when you want to splurge a bit. read more

We ordered four of them including bang bang shrimp, bacon calamari, grilled eggplant tower, and crab stuffed portabella. All of them were delicious. I especially liked the bang bang shrimp... it was so flavorful. They were all plated very well. The grilled eggplant was especially impressive... it was almost too pretty to eat! My expectations for dinner were pretty high after tasting the appetizers. Sadly, my entree really fell flat which is the reason why I knocked off a star. I ordered the homemade ravioli stuffed with ricotta cheese and topped with pomodoro sauce. I wasn't happy with the taste of the raviolis and would have liked more sauce on it. The portion size was decent. Nothing special about the presentation, though. For desert, we split the pumpkin cheesecake. It was good but didn't really taste like cheesecake to me. Came here for dinner with 5 people on a Saturday night and it was packed even at 8pm in the middle of New Jersey. They bring out freshly baked bread with seasoned olive oil as a free appetizer and, my god, I probably ate an entire loaf before my meal even arrived. The bread is crusty on the outside yet moist and chewy on the inside and perfect for sopping up the olive oil. We split a calamari for the table and it was decent (doesn't quite achieve that melt-in-your-mouth texture and could use a bit more seasoning), but I was blown away by the fried jalapenos - soooo effin' tasty. They should make the fried jalapenos as a standalone appetizer. I got the lamb chops with risotto, which was pricey at $32, but it came with almost half a rack (a deliciously cooked and hefty 3 portions of double ribs), 3 pieces of asparagus (needed more salt and pepper), and this unbelievably rich and savory parmesan risotto (which outshined the chops for me). The sausage bolognese penne had a hearty meaty flavor and a nice balance between savory and a touch of sweet. The colossal crab meat scampi capellini came with a very generous portion of crab meat (a little overcooked and could be fresher), perfectly cooked capellini with each strand coated nicely with butter, and very refreshing pieces of sundried tomato with just the right amount of acidity to cut through the richness. Didn't try the tilapia florentine but heard it was amazing. The food is on the pricier side, but Metro definitely stands out for its authentic and well-executed Italian food. This was not my preference as I assumed any reservations taken at this time would be outside due to COVID and all the reviews I had seen had been outdoor dining. They said you have to put in a special request for that. Luckily, they followed social distancing so it was OK for indoor dining, but still not my preference. Food was good. Service was good as well. We had our office Thanksgiving lunch in their upstairs "party room" and there were 15 of us. The service was good and the room did provide separation and allowed us to have good conversations. The appetizers were excellent we ordered a few for the table including the Bang Bang Shrimp, Burrata, Brussel Sprouts and Calamari. I had the Butterfish & Jumbo Lump Crab as my main dish and it was delicious and creamy! The salads that others in our party got also looked great and filling. Expensive for the average quality of food, but I appreciated the old-fashioned, rustic space. We had a nice private room, which was great for our large party. But I am not exaggerating when I say nothing I ate or drank blew me away -- it was all just fine. For drinks, we had sangria. For appetizers, we had wings, calamari, spring rolls, and mussels. For main entrees, we had the lobster linguini and the Gorgonzola sirloin. And for dessert, we had the creme brûlée and the molten lava cake. Everything lacked nuances in flavor -- things were either too bland, like the mussels and the sangria, or way too overwhelming, like the Gorgonzola on the sirloin. The sirloin was also not great quality for a whopping $38. The custard of the creme brûlée wasn't very smooth, and the cake part of the molten lava cake was not as moist as it should've been. We are not local; SoCal people who have a daughter in college in the area. So we discovered this place on accident. The first time we came, we were amazed by how good the food was. The second time, it was not only about the food, but the amazing service. We were not able to make reservations and it was very busy, but the bartenders made that better by having a great whiskey I like and pouring a generous portion. Better yet, my daughter got a ribbon stuck in her purse zipper, and the hostess fixed it. The manager made sure we got a table ASAP, and once again, the food was fantastic, and at a reasonable price. The pasta here is phenomenal! All in all, a great meal, at a great price, where the friendly staff go above and beyond what's expected to make sure the guests are happy. Love this place! read more
