UPDATE. They still got it. Their carne guisada is, in my opinion, is the best of the city.

I was disappointed with my experience at Metro Taco Stop. My enchilada plate was mediocre at best. I had good memories of the tacos. The food was just okay and I will just get tacos the next time I think about eating there.

Marjan and I were searching for a new taco house, wanting another establishment's take on the treasured breakfast taco. At the 1604 and Bandera area, we read reviews on Yelp for nearby restaurants, and decided on Metro Taco Stop. The restaurant is on the corner of Prue and Bandera within a strip center of varied retails, plenty of parking fronting the eatery. In truth, we almost passed the restaurant, given the diminutive signage on the front wall. Entering, one notices a well maintained space, recently painted, with perhaps 20 tables for patrons. Unlike some Mexican food restaurants, the decor is more contemporary, eschewing the common decor found so commonly. Facing the patrons one sees an order counter, with menu above the counter. Foods are ordered, and taking a number, items are delivered to the patrons. We are impressed with the friendliness and good cheer of the two staff working the counter. Behind the counter, Raul Avalos, proprietor and chef is seen working the stove. We learned that the restaurant had been in service for 12 years, and the website advertised a different take, a refreshing offering of traditional Mexican fare. Our taco choices today: machacado, carne guisada, bean and cheese, and chicken fajita, all on flour. The machacado we considered comparable to any other we had enjoyed elsewhere, typical innards, typical spicing. The carne guisada was of cubes of beef, the sauce somewhat bland, and in my opinion somewhat heavy on grease. The bean and cheese was a cut below what i had enjoyed at most other restaurants. The chicken fajita, one of our all time favorites, was a major disappointment: excessively laden with bell pepper and onion, and light on the fajita, light on the minimal seasoning. We have our number one Mexican restaurant (review can be read on Yelp), and we measure offerings compared to that standard. I was raised on delicious Mexican food, literally the food that Mom and Grandma made, ergo my two frames of reference. We really wanted to like Metro Taco Stop, and reading reviews of other Yelpers, many patrons do enjoy their offerings. We have to honestly mark the restaurant with 3 stars.

    Fajita taco with ranchero sauce.

Excellent customer service. No other customers were present during my visit, this could be due to the location. It is tucked away in the corner. The fajita tacos were ok. The beef used was similar to that used for pepper steak. Clean establishment.

One of the most authentic Mexican establishments I've been to in Texas. Wife had Menudo Sopas and Tripas. I had Enchiladas Verde. All scrumptious. An almost out of the body experience in the food arena. Can't wait to come back on our next trip to San Antonio.

Pickup orders only, no dine in which is smart in the time of covid. All employees are wearing masks and they provide hand sanitizer at the entrance for you to use before entering. Service was super quick and friendly but the food was just okay. The menudo wasn't bad but just seemed to be missing something even with the lime and onions added. The carne guisada was super bland and it seemed that the meat wasn't stewed long enough to give it the carne guisada texture and flavor. We did enjoy the mini tacos al pastor though. The al pastor tacos were flavorful and the meat was tender. I just wish that I could say that everything I ordered was great but just a note to all, skip the carne guisada and go with their street tacos.

Chorizo and egg taco. Free with Yelp check-in.

I'm so Caucasian that I make Bing Crosby and The Rhythm Boys look like Ladysmith Black Mambazo, so I'm wholly unqualified to comment on the authenticity of any food other than boiled potatoes. As I drooled over a plate of barbacoa and eggs at Metro Taco Stop -- a quaint breakfast/lunch Mexican joint on the Northwest side of town -- an older patron smiled at me as if to say, "You know the good stuff, kid!" I was in an uncharacteristically social mood, so I struck up a conversation with the gentleman regarding the authenticity of the scrumptiousness sitting before me. Me: Esto se ve deliciouso, no? Him: Hiciste una sabia eleccion! Tienen la mejor barbacoa este lado de la ciudad. Me: Es autentico? Him: Mas cerca se puede llegar a la barbacoa Mexicana real dentro de las 300 millas. That last claim is debatable, as I'm sure many taquerias on the Westside offer barbacoa just as delicious and authentic, but I appreciated his insight and enthusiasm. My experience with Metro Taco Stop is limited to breakfast service, but I was so impressed that I plan to return many times for breakfast and lunch. The barbacoa served here is indeed the stuff of dreams: tender, silky strands of heaven suffused with melted fat and collagen from the "cachete," or cheek of the cow. My plate came with the standard additions of fresh cilantro, minced white onion, and a generous serving of lime wedges. I was impressed with the portion of meat, which yielded three full tacos. The cubed breakfast potatoes and refried beans that accompanied the plate were fine, if unspectacular. I squirted several dollops of incendiary housemade habanero salsa on the potatoes, transforming them into something worth savoring. Too much is never enough for the Mysterious Ryan M., so I ordered a machacado taco a la carte. It was a San Antonio Tex-Mex breakfast staple done right: strands of shredded beef, perfectly scrambled eggs (not too soft, not too hard), diced tomatoes, onions, and chunks of fresh vein-in jalapeno. The flour tortilla was soft enough to be palatable but sturdy enough to contain the various salsas I added (tomatillo, roasted tomato/jalapeno, the aforementioned habanero) and juice from the tomatoes. Is Metro Taco Stop the best place for a Mexican breakfast in San Antonio? The competition is fierce, particularly on the Westside, so probably not. Is it the best place for a Mexican breakfast on the predominantly white Northwest side of San Antonio? Quite possibly! Chef/owner Raul Avalos certainly has the culinary gravitas and business acumen to run a great restaurant. Prior to Metro Taco, he led the kitchen at many restaurants in Mexico, including an upscale sushi bar and a Brazilian churrascaria. Judging by his amiable interactions with customers, many of them undoubtedly regulars, I think he's found his niche here in San Antonio. *You might be surprised to learn that I speak Spanish somewhat fluently. How can this be? The answer is simple: He, the Antichrist, will speak many languages, but not one word of Latin will come from his lips. This is true, for I always struggled with the Etruscan and Phoenician alphabets. Actually, I learned Spanish in college by watching "Destinos: An Introduction to Spanish," a video learning tool disguised as a dull telenovela wherein Mexican and South American characters speak very slowly (e.g., "Ho-la, mi lla-mo Rac-quel Rod-ri-guez. Don-de es-ta tu perr-o, Be-to?"). See link below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWXjP7BLKZM

This is my first time here. I am very impressed. The salsa was so on point that I want to buy a jar to take home!!! Everything I had tasted great. Well...actually just bought an 8oz of salsa. Ok back to the review...great tasting. It's a small restaurant but geez you will not be disappointed. The beans have a lot of flavor. And they are not skimpy on the avocado, as you can see on the chalupa.

Some of the best tacos around. I particularly like the lengua and bean on homemade corn tortilla tacos. The tacos are stuffed full. Yum yum

Blah and pricey. It's not very good. I think it's NOT taco for San Antonio. It's also a bit too expensive.

From the moment I walked in, I could tell this place was special. The atmosphere is beautiful, upscale, and inviting. The architecture and design throughout the restaurant are absolutely stunning. Even the restrooms were impressive and reflected the same attention to detail found throughout the entire establishment. The food was outstanding. Every dish was beautifully presented and packed with flavor. This isn't your typical restaurant experience--the menu is creative, unique, and offers something different. You can tell a lot of thought goes into both the preparation and presentation of every plate. What really made the experience unforgettable, though, was the customer service. My waitress, Kreizon, was absolutely amazing. She was friendly, attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely made me feel welcome throughout my visit. Great service can make a good meal even better, and she definitely elevated the entire experience. The outdoor dining area is also beautiful and creates a relaxing atmosphere that's perfect for enjoying a meal and taking in the surroundings. If you're looking for a restaurant that offers exceptional food, incredible ambiance, unique architecture, and top-notch customer service, Domingo is a must-visit. This is more than just dinner--it's an experience. Highly recommended, and I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in San Antonio.

Electronic dance music pulsed quietly in the background. The toilets were all individual unisex stalls that were classy, mine had run out of hand towels. Also, the entire restaurant is very dimly lit. I had to use the flashlight on my phone to read the menu, but I have poor eyesight so there's that, but it might explain the quality of the photos I took. The Paloma drink was amazing. It had a great spicy zing in the back of the throat after every sip. Queso was... kinda plain. It might have been better with the add chorizo option. It was very thick. Shrimp cocktail was big, but we started fighting over the shrimp pieces. There was plenty of onion and tomato left over after the batttle. Pollo Asado was a great flavor and the chicken was juicy. Grilled squash that was on the side was good. Chicken enchiladas were good and had freshly sliced jalapeños, which is always a welcome detail. I wasn't able to taste the quesadilla but my daoughter said it was "really good". Fried Chicken sandwich had a great flavor and the bacon was actually pork belly if I'm not mistaken. Sadly there was more batter than chicken. The seasoned fries were delicious and crispy.

It was delicious! The concha was soft, buttery and flaky, with just the right sweetness. We took home the majority of it and it stayed nice and soft instead of turning hard like so many others. We decided to try several appetizers to go along with our concha to get a wider taste of their food than we would by just ordering a couple entrees. Let me tell you, this was a great idea! We ordered the Tosti-Ceviche Verde, Panela Asado, Mexican Street Corn, and their Spicy Bean Dip. The Ceviche Verde was excellent, the freshness of the fish and shrimp was wonderful with the chipotle mayo and avocado. We chose to have it on the salsa Verde Tostitos and it was all great combination. The Panelo Asado was a completely new dish for us and was extremely good with a savory flavor from the salsa Tlaquepaque that mixed well with the Panela cheese. Their tortillas though not made in house, are made for them and taste like mom made them. The Mexican Street Corn was great and had the perfect bit of char taste from the corn. It was creamy and flavorful, we did think it could use just a tad more lime juice though. The Spicy Bean Dip was very good. You can't go wrong with Oaxaca, Chorizo, and pieces of pork mixed with some mildly spicy beans. Our server was fantastic. She had great recommendations for us, and was quick with checking on our drinks and generally helping us throughout our dinner. The food was prepared quickly, was hot, tasteful and refreshing. We definitely will be going back, and recommend Pan Fila to all of you.
