Second time in the past couple weeks we've been there and amazingly gets better every time. Service is outstanding and they really make you feel like family. The place can get loud but I never felt it was that different to most restaurants in town. The highlight is for sure the food, I would argue the chicken pipian is right there with Canje's jerk chicken as the top chicken dishes in town. Other highlights are for sure the tetela and the chile relleno and will be our to go appetizers from now on! All the dishes are perfectly put together and the sauces all are spot on. For dessert, we've tried the cheese, chocolate masa cake and arroz con leche. I'm torn between the chocolate and the cheesecake as my favorite. Finally the drinks, Gaby is amazing, knows a ton about tequilas and mezcales and the cocktails we've tried have all been memorable. Special mention for "La patrona" worth stopping at the bar for, even if not staying for dinner. All in all the place has been a pleasant surprise and it's a much welcomed addition to the local food scene even with the already strong upscale Mexican options we are lucky to have. read more

Don't be fooled by this gorgeous restaurant- it's not worth the hype. We dined here last weekend and everything from the cocktails to main dish were horrible. 1. cocktails- not worth the price. The margaritas tasted like syrup. 2. Shrimp ceviche- no flavor whatsoever. We had to ask for and add salt, even then it was mediocre at best. 3. Fish dish- fish was overcooked and dry 4. New York steak- as soon as it got to the table we noticed it had a strange light brown color. Took a bite and it was COLD. We called our server who said he'd take it back and make us another. At this point we were so tapped out that we told him just to throw that same steak on the heat and bring it back to us. When we got it back, it was still cold. We sent it back, closed out, and as we were leaving a manager came over to ask us about our experience and to get feedback on how they could've made it better. She ended up telling us that they got a "bad batch of steaks" her words, not mine... if you knew it was a "bad batch" WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU SERVE IT? I am extremely disappointed. Does not live up to the hype. Our waiter was nice but service did not match the level expected at a restaurant of this price / caliber. Food was average. We were a large group and sampled most of the menu--the only standouts were the snapper ceviche and hamachi tiradito. Medium-rare steak was served medium-well and sent back. I'm so confused by the 5 star reviews. I didn't feel like any of this was Mexican cuisine. I ordered the roasted chicken and a house margarita. All of the drinks are served with no ice, so send like very small portions. My chicken was SO BLAND. I didn't get any authentic Mexican spices notes. Also ordered the Brussels, drenched in a sauce that made them soggy. If you're looking for heat Mexican food, this ain't it. The location was perfect, and the interior was nicely done. It has a loud, high-energy vibe. The cocktails were creative and tasted great! Relative to some of the other high-end Mexican restaurants in Austin, Mexta's food and service were just okay. The food wasn't necessarily bad, just not to the level I was expecting. On the service end, the food runners kept getting confused on who ordered what. At nicer restaurants, the server has this recorded and passes this information on to the person delivering the food. When people ordered similar dishes with minor modifications, it made sorting out dishes annoying. Next time I'm looking for a high-end Mexican restaurant, I'd likely pick Suerte, Comedor, or half a dozen other good options nearby. read more

The place is indeed beautiful, but our experience was marred by a 15-minute wait for our table, despite having reservations. The lack of explanation for the empty tables was disheartening. I wish I loved the food or cocktails, but it was just ok. There was a very strong bleach smell, and my friend is very allergic to it. Why not clean and disinfect before or after hours? The champagne used had clearly been open for a while on gone stale/flat. I wish it had more smokey notes from the Mezcal. First, I was greeted warmly and escorted to the bar. The menu is eclectic and the host took his time to explain the highlights of both the drinks and food menu. Don't waste your time getting a reservation at this place. I have never posted a negative review on Google, but what happened to me was so egregious I had to share it with the hope I prevent the same thing from happening to someone else. These guys are a piece of work. I made a reservation for a business dinner (party of 8), three weeks in advance. Two days before my reservation (over a weekend) they left me a voicemail letting me know they cancelled my reservation because they booked out the entire restaurant. When I called them back, they tried to make a reservation at a couple of lame restaurants on short notice rather than do the right thing and accommodate my party. They also said they could seat us before 5:00 or after 9:00 p.m.... pathetic. The bottomline is they left me high-n-dry without a viable alternative for my large group because they got a better offer for a private event which shows they really don't care about their clientele. Be forewarned, these guys will slit your throat too. read more

If I had to describe my experience at Mexta in one word it would be: womp. It's a disappointing experience because the menu is an exciting read. However the food just falls flat and the service needs a lot of work. After being seated (on a Tuesday at 6:30, so it was pretty empty) we didn't see our server for almost 20 minutes. We ordered guacamole with the tostadas and salsas to start. The guacamole was very lime-forward, but what was more distracting was the three relatively small "tostadas" that came with the dish. If we hadn't ordered the tostadas and salsas (for an up charge) were we just supposed to eat the guacamole with...a spoon? Also, the four salsas we were served were fine (again, not interesting but fine) but dropped at our table with no explanation of what they were. The two we liked most were made from...??? My husband and I aren't strangers to Mexican cuisine, but still weren't sure what these were made from and would have loved to know. We also had the ceviche (standard, good) and the lobster bisque (admittedly, this was very good). But the pacing was way, way off. We were getting plate after plate with barely enough time to start one before the next came out. Same went for cocktails. We planned to have one with our appetizers and then split a bottle of wine with our main dishes, but saw our actual server so infrequently that we only got to order the cocktail at the beginning of the meal and then nothing else. Not a huge loss for us, but definitely lost revenue for them. My husband was served his main dish and then, again an issue with the pacing, I was left waiting on mine. He had the pork belly, which was, well pork belly is always going to be good :) and I had the salmon which was unfortunately underdone. It was also served with "purée." The flavor on the purée was mild, so we went back to the menu to see what it was. No further clues were offered. Just "purée." By the time we were finished, we were running way behind schedule (it was a date night and we had a sitter) and so forwent dessert to get home on time. All in all, the prices are way too high for the experience and for the food. There's a lot to be worked out from the back of the house to the front. I'd skip this one-- I don't think it will be around for long anyways. As my husband (with the epic dad jokes) notes, it was meh-xta. read more

As a newer restaurant, a couple misses, but a lot of wins. We walked in about 7:30 on a weekend evening hoping for the glamorous, moody ambiance we saw online, but were met with an ice cold dining room and the brightest lighting I've seen in a restaurant. I heard some music later, but it was also dead silent - it felt like we had accidentally walked into a midday meeting and I honestly considered turning around right there. Our server was quick to greet us and very friendly, though, so we stayed before overthinking it. We ordered a couple of cocktails that were a bit off-tasting and so switched to a bottle of wine from there on out. The food itself was really good - you'll find some unique flavors and preparations (we did the guac with extra sauces, hamachi, esquites, mole steak, salmon, and rice pudding). The rice pudding and esquites were probably the least interesting, but still pretty good. The guac and sauces gets a particular call out, and everything else was good. Not everyone who dropped off food could speak to the dish, but I'd rather efficient and friendly service, so not a big deal - service was really great. Over the course of the meal, they did turn the a/c and lights down a bit, though I think there was still a ways to go on ambiance - a few small changes could really change the feel of a meal there. read more
