Stopped here for a quick bite. Seemed like a cute little clean spot. It wasn't busy and there was a black family that seemed to be checking it out too. Since I was by myself, I asked to order for takeout. The waiter with glasses and man bun was okay. He gave me a menu and came back to get my order. However, no one asked me if I would like a glass of water while I waited or showed me where I could sit. The other waiter was making drinks and quickly, but politely, brought my food and said thank you. No forks or napkins in the bag. The manager with a gold glasses chain barely looked at me although he passed me several times. Now the pupusas were excellent. Fresh, hot and large with a great tasting dipping sauce and slaw. We paid with a credit card without being informed beforehand that a 3% credit card fee would be tacked on. I don't have an issue with businesses passing on credit card fees to its customers IF you tell us beforehand and give us the choice to pay cash. I'm removing one star for this. Although the food tastes good and the staff is welcoming, it took a looooong time before we were served our meals on a busy Friday night with the restaurant full. This place has gotten nasty. I called in my pick-up order for carne asada. We live down the street and picked it up right away. What I ate of it before getting grossed out was tough. Like sawing into a leather insole. Then the hair. The long black hair that was wrapped around my tongue. Pulling this out of my mouth in a spiral was enough to make me lurch. Called them back tk let them know. I wasn't mean about, just thought they should tell the kitchen staff to put their hair up. He apologized but didn't offer a refund, or anything to amend it. TBH if he had it wouldn't have made a difference. Its the 5th time eating here since they opened and I'll not be back. So many more options for Mexican food in the area. A Richmond gem! The owner has created a lovely environment to eat delicious, fresh, Mexican food. I have had their enchiladas (both green and red mole) and the sauces were amazing. I have also had a taco sampler of chicken, carnitas and carne asada--all yummy but the chicken and carnitas were my favorites. Everything is super fresh and flavorful--even the fluffy rice and the beans. The thick corn tortillas are made fresh and some of the best I have eaten. The orange juice is freshly squeezed at the restaurant and the Mocha espresso drink was yummy. Staff is very friendly as well. read more

Came here on a Friday around 1pm for a late lunch and this place was busy. The parking is a little funky because there's only street parking and there are numerous signs saying you cannot park in the adjacent grocery store parking lot or you'll be towed - take note if you have a reservation or meeting up with someone. My friend and I were seated quickly without a reservation and our waiter was very friendly. We ordered some chips, salsa and guacamole as an appetizer which was a good size to share for two and I ordered the shrimp fajitas. Food was good, but I didn't care for the pickled onions and bell peppers. I was expecting more of a classic fajitas with the meat and sautéed bell peppers and onions. My only compliant about this place is our waiter seemed to be too occupied and forgot my to put in my friend's order, so I received my meal first and we waited awhile for her food. Breakfast burrito was gross! The potatoes in it were super big and I added steak for additional price and they barely put any meat in there.

Our friends suggested this restaurant. I remember years ago when this was a Chinese restaurant. Unfortunately, it had caught fire and they never retired. For years, the building was somewhat of an eyesore, one that I had thought would be destined to be torn down. But no, they fixed up the building, slapped on some paint, modernized the interior and it was bright and inviting. The staff was friendly, and the food was pretty good. So then, why the 3* rating? Sometimes family run businesses lose sight of what their purpose it. Beyond providing a welcoming atmosphere, quality service, fresh hot eye-appealing food, you have to look at your business through the customers eyes. Many family run businesses don't operate like a professional business. That doesn't mean to be corporate and provide just the current standards. We found that the music was too loud for casual conversation. We were told to take a seat anywhere and when we did, we had to wait for menus. The server came over with one set while there were five of us so the other four had to wait. The server then wiped the table for us and decided that five people sitting at a square table might be tight and had one diner move so another table could be moved over to extend our table. It would have made more sense to ask us to wait a minute while they put together a table for us and then clean it before we were seated. Water was served to everyone, but one person ordered a juice drink. Although one of the servers told us several times that the drink was on the way, it did not arrive until 1/2 the meal had been consumed. Yes, there was an apology given, but additional consideration would have been appropriate as well. We accepted the suggested order of Chips & Guacamole, and while it was attractive dish, the flavors were a bit bland for me. And then, nothing. We waited and waited, trying to converse over the music, when the food finally came. Was it worth the wait? Mostly, yes. Three of us ordered the Chile Relleno Plato - 4 - the portion size was large enough that all three had leftovers to take home. Quesabirrias - 4 - shredded goat meat and cheese in a tortilla dipped in goat sauce. Chile Verde Plato with Pork - 4 - this was my dish. I had expected the whole black beans and the rice, the pickled onions and the corn tortillas on the side. What surprised me was that instead of chunks of pork, there were two pieces of ribs with two ribs each. I'd never seen this dish served this way, but I'll be borrowing the technique. The flavors were good, but if I had to wait that long again when the restaurant did not appear to be particularly busy, there wouldn't be a third visit. Oh, and at the end of our meal, we had to ask for our check after another prolonged wait. read more

The Relleno was bright and presented well, the sauce was nice finish. The rice was bland as were the beans like I mentioned earlier... all in all the only thing was Luke warm. The service was great. Just enough not pesky nor a lack of. I asked for a fresh fruit mojito, they don't have one but they accommodated my request... just not with fresh fruit, but hey it was good and let's admit refreshing. Nobody acknowledged me (two men were behind the bar, but I find it hard to believe they couldn't see someone had entered the restaurant after so much time passed). Most places I've been had staff who were attentive enough to immediately acknowledge (even a simple "we'll be right with you"). I ended up walking to the Order Pick up area because I was very hungry and on limited time. I stood there again unacknowledged for about 1 minute, with the staff just a few feet away (they somehow still couldn't sense someone was there).
