Please do yourself a favor and do not hire Michael and Sons. My husband and I had a couple of good experiences with them but this experience was horrible. We hired them to replace our water heater 8 months ago. We started having an issue with our water heater a couple of weeks ago. It tripped a couple of times and my husband reset it. (It did not trip the house breaker.) My husband thought it could be that one of the thermostats was bad and to call Michael and Sons because it was under warranty. We had the same experience as alot of people on here with customer service. Showing up late and no return calls this time around. Customer Service I would give zero stars. Very frustrating to deal with. We had a tech come out thursday,friday, and saturday. Same tech for all 3 days. We were suppose to get a appointment on friday but didn't. Ended up getting one because I Iost my cool but tech didn't have the proper tool to do the work. So that is why we had a saturday appointment. Our warning to anyone who buys a water heater from Michael and Sons make sure if you up the temp above 120 degrees you put the temp back down to 120 degrees before your tech arrives. Because and here is the kicker they will void/cancel your warranty. Yup you read that right. No warning label on the water heater saying if you up temp your warranty is void/cancel. Paperwork we have doesn't state that either. I was never told that by the tech that installed either. This tech claimed that they come out and up your temp for free. Don't know if that is true never tried because No One Told Me. We ended up paying $439.00 for 2 heating elements and 20 mins of work. Save yourself the headache, money and hire someone else. Update: So my husband looked at the thermostat and the upper thermostat has melted wire and thermostat is discolored. Wire is suppose to be blue and it is black. Hmm maybe we were right. My husband ordered a thermostat and will replace it himself, since our warranty is canceled. read more

We had a new HVAC system installed by M&S in December, per their recommendation and at a cost of $14,000. Yesterday, the AC system stopped blowing cold air. Given the 90+ degree heat, we called right away and had a technician come out in the evening. Unfortunately, the technician said it required a part that he didn't have in his truck, but they had one at their facilities. He confirmed that he'd be back today (7/31) to finish the repairs. At that point, M&S became unresponsive to repeated calls to their customer service department. First they claimed that the technician would call us with a time he would come by. When we didn't receive a call, we called customer service again. At that point they claimed they left a voicemail for their parts department to see if the part was available and would get back to us quickly. Sure enough, no call back. We call again and are told the technician will definitely call us "shortly." Again, no call back. After yet another call to customer service, they say they don't have the part and have to call the distributor, but might not hear back until Monday, if not later. We have very young children at home with 90+ degree temperatures expected over the weekend. When I asked M&S if they were going to reimburse us for the cost of a hotel over the weekend, the customer service agent LAUGHED and said no.....apparently a brand new, $14,000 system that they recommended and installed comes with no guarantees, no customer service, and no alternative solutions when it's needed the most. read more

No show for appointment time 3:30-6 to troubleshoot no running water in the house from the well.  Dispatch called at 5pm for a "courtesy call" to notify me the tech was running late however didn't know new estimated time of arrival and assured me tech was still coming out to house and was not going to cancel appt. Around 6: 30 I called and spoke with Dispatch asking about arrival time. Dispatch placed me on hold while attempting to get in touch with the tech and manager without success, and said she would call be back after getting in touch with someone for a status update.  Dispatch called back within 15 minutes to let me know appointment had been cancelled and someone was suppose to call me to let me know.  Still no running water. read more

Risk inducers; bad customer service; and despicable up selling tactics. Scheduled a HVAC inspection. Symptoms was thermostat wasn't regulating temperature. I changed the filter myself prior to their visit. Technician replaced an additional filter that I couldn't reach; added freon to outside unit; and suggested blower well cleaning. Total price $550. After technician left the HVAC went out. I scheduled another visit; 2nd technician arrived and informed that 1st technician didn't correctly wire unit and unit tripped. 2nd technician informed that 1st technician left dangerous wire on metal. 2nd technician informed the fixed issue. I reported the less than stellar customer service to Michael & Sons and was simply transferred to multiple phone reps. Finally able to speak with regional manager and reviewed concerns; I advised that HVAC interior noise is now unbearable due to recent work. 3rd technician was dispatched and advised me to cover return air vent. NOW THAT IS BAD ADVICE AND ANOTHER RISK FACTOR. 3rd technician advice would cause more damage to the unit. This company is horrible. I cannot believe they are still in business. read more

I appreciate that they showed up within 2 hours, after hours. However, they also charge a significant fee for that after hours service. That was the only part of the service I was happy with. The electrician who appeared was dishonest in his rate negotiation - stating that he would trouble shoot the issue since he agreed none of the fuses looked blown. If the fuses were blown he said he would replace them. Now - the after hours fee is more than doubled to include the diagnostic fee. Then he diagnosed that a fuse is blown! And that he cannot fix it without an additional fee. After I expressed my dissatisfaction he mentioned they don't work on our type of electrical units, despite being on our coop approved vendors list and having been out to assist multiple times in the past. This felt very "talk down to the woman and gaslight her". When I called to make the appointment they clearly had records of servicing my apartment in the past - and surely that means you know what type of electrical system you're showing up to. If he wasn't getting agitated and wasnt alone with me in my apartment I absolutely would have refused to pay anything over the after hours call out fee. This is the third time they have come to my unit and provided subpar service. I don't recommend them unless you have no other choices or options. I only called them tonight because my usual electrician was unable to provide emergency support. read more

Went to Lowes for a bathroom vanity replacement. They contract with Michael & Son to do the install and a requirement is a $35 measurement visit. I had no problem with that because it would be applied against the total charge. Michael & Son was supposed to call within 48 hrs to make an appt. Never called. It took a call from Lowes three days later to initiate a call back. In their favor, the guy showed up on time and did the measuring. They were supposed to get back to Lowes within 48 hours, but no response from them. Called Lowes and they didn't have the quote after 72 hours. The Lowes salesman called Michael & Son and they promised to fax the quote immediately. If they can screw up something this simple, how can I trust them to show up on time and do a decent job? Michael and Sons is a scam. Literally a scam. I had them come out to check my air conditioning and between the tech and the back office it felt like they routinely practiced the art of deception. both stated my machines were broken and the recharge fluid was unavailable. They tried to con me into a new ac unit, suggested some absurd commercial grade version that was twice as expensive of anything on the market and replace my working furnace. I relied on them for their expertise for a fair suggestion. The tech at my house even told the scammer in the back office for a more reasonable priced unit. I called another company, they came out. Diagnosed and recharged my AC and I've had no issues. My house is nice and frosty. I am literally disgusted at these thieves. response to "band aid fix" I could pay for 30 years of band aid fixes and still be at $3,000 vs the laughable $9,000 you all "advised". I had another company provide an estimate for a comparable unit and the price was $4,000. look at all the other negative reviews. only positive is I loved the service tech I had for electrical work. read more

I purchased a maintenance contract on our generator over 18 months ago. I thought they would automatically send out maintenance every six months. After realizing that I never heard from them, I called and was told I needed to schedule those appointments, but they don't expire. I would have appreciated a call to remind me that I had not made those appointments, so that was disappointing. Now we are on the right track. The service tech was able to come out without me being home (generator outside), but still contacted me to let me know he was coming, which was nice. What happened to Michael and Son? I have been a customer for six years and have spent more than $14,000 with the company and had been impressed with their customer service until now. I had an appointment with A/C technicians and they showed up almost three hours late. I called and asked for a manager to call me back. A week passed and no call. I called again and requested a manager. No call back. I filed an online contact form. No response. What kind of company treats their loyal customers this way? What started as a minor complaint has now escalated to the point I will no longer recommend this company and may cease any further business. UPDATE 7/18/20: I wrote to the company email in the comments. No response until I wrote again the next day. I was offered a voucher for a future inspection. I was told that they cannot refund me due to the fact that they're dealing with a pandemic and staff sizes are much smaller than normal. I am not sure how the coronavirus prevents a company from contacting a customer for almost two weeks--I guess it is the convenient excuse. I added one star because I finally got a response but only took five messages and a Yelp review. UPDATE 7/28/20: Back to one star. The promised voucher never came. I called on 7/24 to check on an ordered A/C part that was supposed to arrive by 7/13. Asked for a call back. No one called. I called again today and was forwarded to a voice mail. Really? I only gave 1 star because I can't give negative stars. I've used Michael & Sons for a number of years for various projects. Any goodwill they had with me was destroyed in an email exchange with them. For the last project to replace my hot water heater, the technician needed to move my washing machine to access the area. At the end he put the machine back and we both checked that the water was flowing into the machine. What neither of us realized and I found out a couple of days later is that the machine was no longer spinning. After another technician came out and said they don't repair appliances I was told to arrange for a technician to diagnose the problem, which I did. Ultimately the technician said the motor was working completely fine, but the belt between the motor and the agitator was dislodged from the agitator caused by moving it. I was provided an estimate to fix it; however the technician said it was a 50/50 chance that it could be fixed since the machine was 8 years old and the part being used was not made specifically for the machine I had. I requested Michael and Son to pay the flat service fee for the diagnosis. I did not ask them to replace the machine or to pay a high cost to fix something that only had a 50/50 chance of working. Instead Michael and Son lost an annuity from me for the annual service plan I had for several years and about $2,100 in other work they had just quoted me for. However, they get to keep their $124.95. Will never use them again. read more

We needed repair on a broken toilet pipe so Michael's and Sons repaired the line but they needed to break up our concrete to reach the repairs. When they finished the worker who did the plumbling repairs also did the repair on the concrete. He did a very shoddy job. The concrete was not smooth. A pipe cap was placed below the pavement surface so now it leaves a puddle of water at our back door. I called and complaint and even provided pictures and was basically told they did not see a problem. I was told they would follow up and would send someone to check it out but they never did. UPDATE: Upon posting my original "less than satisfactory" review, I was immediately contacted by a Michael & Sons customer service representative (Maurice); who offered his sincerest apologies for the "less than stellar" customer service that Michael & Sons strives to provide. He advised me that he would like to reschedule my service and as a courtesy, Michael & Sons would like to perform the services (Winter - Furnace/Heat Pump Precision Tune-Up) FREE OF CHARGE. I rescheduled for December 19th; which was a bit longer than I wanted to wait, but TODAY (December 12th), I was presently surprised and contacted by the Michael & Sons technician (Joli) who advised that he would be able to come and perform the services today, if I was available. I eagerly awaited the arrival of the technician; and upon his arrival, he completed the Precision Tune-Up on both of my units (Dual-Zone); in a timely fashion and with the utmost professionalism. Joli was very polite, forthcoming (as to whether we had any questions regarding the service) and meticulous. He treated our home as if it was his own and kept his work space clean; as well as making sure to clean up prior to his departure. Although our experience with Michael & Sons started out a little rocky; we were extremely pleased with the outcome of our service and we would recommend Michael & Sons to family and friends for any of their service needs. Unbelievably awful company and service. I spent a fortune on a new HVAC system and it breaks every other month or so. When I need an appointment when its 90+ degrees out and the AC is down, the soonest I can usually get is two weeks away. They have also cancelled appointments on me minutes before they were supposed to start. AWFUL! I had x2 leaky shower faucets and they wanted to charge me over $600. I was quoted $69 for the service call plus parts. I emailed I wanted my $69 back and they called the next day at 7:40 am and said that the $69 was to be deducted after the service was completed and that it cost them $300 to send a plumber out. I got another plumber (Bay Breeze)who charged me less than half that AND he gave me my military veteran discount AND he drove from Va. beach to Williamsburg!! I was told this company was great. People I personally know got great service. Unfortunately not the case for me. They showed up for a hot water heater replacement and got it done. However, I also needed a liner and flue upgrade to bring things up to code. They said another department would handle that. Well it's been 2 months and I can't get anyone to do anything. I called to get information about their costs and was informed that outside of DC there was a $69 charge for coming out but an $89 charge to come out to a DC address (charge is waived if you have the work done). I asked why and was given a lot of nonsense about parking and such. It's certainly no worse in DC than in, say, Alexandria or other urban areas in MD and Virginia. This company is complete garbage. They replaced my AC unit in my condo and in the process removed multiple pieces of sheetrock that they didn't even replace, forcing me to manually do the repairs. They didn't even knock any money off the price even though they tore up my wall in the process of their 'repair.' They also failed to screw in the covering of the unit appropriately. When negotiating a new HVAC system with this firm, you need to ask for specific heat pump "part" that is not included in the manufacturer (Carrier) ..... it's called "Hard Start Kit" and it improves the efficiency and decreases the depreciation of the system. The Hard start kit should be included in the initial installation of your system, NOT after the fact (one year later) .... then, this firm, will ask over $200 for this simple installation of a vital part the SHOULD BE included in the original install ... Michael and Sons is scamming people into purchasing warranty agreements that require you to still pay for services and want you to upgrade systems and parts. I have used them 3 times and always on emergency for sewage pumps. They make you think your pump is bad, they don't carry the parts to fix it, charge you for emergency services, make you order the part, so they return with the part, charge, again, for returning for emergency service. You don't need the part, then you have to fight them for a refund for the part you didn't need but had to purchase for repairs. Was told if I didn't like the service to go someplace else. They gave me an appointment for 10 days later (they told me I could pay double the amount for an "emergency appointment" that could happen sooner). We had a service call for our HVAC unit for lack of heat. The guy said the sequencer was fried and the heat strips would need to be replaced. When I looked, there was a wire that had corroded. I asked if he could replace the wire. He said, he didn't have the wire. They called the next day and said, it would be 1300 to fix. I called another service and when he looked at it, he said it just needed 2 wires. My family and I will NEVER use this company UPDATE. I have had nothing but excellent service from these guys. I live in a condo in DC and they have successfully serviced apartments with plumbing and HVAC systems. Four people have used them in my building and really liked them. The guys are responsive, professional, friendly, and reasonably priced. They replaced a toilet for me and did an excellent job. I had them price a bathroom reno for me and the estimate was cheaper than Home Depot's. So, they're honest. I am going to have to replace my HVAC this year - and do the bathroom reno, so I will be doing both with Michael & Sons. Would give them one but they were good at solving my problem. My biggest problem was the price. And I found out they get commission on there work so of course it's going to be high. The problem. Not long after we bought our home I came home and smelled a strong odor of natural gas. So I called the Fire Department and of course the gas company game. The fire department found that there was diffently a leak. Then the gas company showed up. He found the general area of the leaks and cut the gas off till it got fixed. The call, We'll because I met an employee one day and I see all there trucks I decided to call this company. The call taker was friendly. The technician was friendly. He did write a written estimate it was over 1000. That's ridiculous. He explained why it was so much. If the pipe had a leak all the way in the mess of pipes it would take some time to dismantle it all and fix. I saw that so let's do it. He charged money for a watery substance to find leaks. Which basically is just soapy water. He tried to tell me it was special liguid. Bs. Every company I have spoke to over the years said that's all it was was soapy water. We had drop ceiling so it was easy to access. He used his soapy water to check all the joints. Found one behind stove right at the first elbow. The other one was one or two joints off of the water heater. Which both were found first thing. But to make sure he had to test them all. Understandable. He had to replace two joints. Very easy to get to and i know the parts shouldn't be too much. Wrong, they or him marked it up 1000%. Highway robbery. That what to expect from a guy who gets commission. After said and done he he gave us a break but it was still way to expensive. Needless to say I never used them again. I also happen to meet an ex employee who said they over charge so they can make more money. It has been about 8 years since then. And it will continue to go that way never again. Just recently I received a message from one of the management team to discuss my review. After a while he explained everything to me and offered to make my experience right. By offering some coupons to use next time we need something. With the contact from them and the integrity they show . I honestly believe they genuinely care. Wow - talk about awful customer service! I scheduled an A/C tune-up on their website. They were the ones who told me a technician would be available on a specific day between 10 and 12 (it's not like I demanded that day and time to fit my schedule). The day before the scheduled appointment, they sent two reminders - one by email and one by text (as if I were in danger of not keeping the commitment - little did I know it would be them!). On the morning of the appointment, I waited for the entire period for the technician to come, and nobody did, and there was absolutely no communication about it. It wasn't until well after that window that *I* was the one who had to call to find out why the technician didn't show up. I don't know why that burden fell on me. I had done my part. Why couldn't M&S do their part? The dispatcher simply told me that the technician would be there in the following time period (12-2). Yet why did it allow me to schedule it for 10-12? And why couldn't *they* be the one to call me and tell me they would come at a different time (and even ask if that would be okay)? Not only did M&S feel that it was okay to inconvenience me by simply not showing up, but they felt it was actually necessary to additionally place the burden on *me* to figure out what was happening - all of this on *my* time! When you don't show up for a doctor's appointment, they charge you anyway, so why is it that M&S can reserve your time and not show up and then just shrug their shoulders? Where is their reimbursement to me for the time of mine that I lost? Again, this was a slot on a day that *they* offered me - they said on their website that they would be able to make it to my house at that time. They had every opportunity to say, "No, can't do that time, but how about this one instead?" And they had every opportunity to contact me that day to tell me they were running late because they had used not one but two means of communicating with me! I recommend that nobody ever uses M&S. If they can't even handle the pre-appointment stuff (like showing up and being courteous), what kind of job would they have done once they arrived? I'm kind of glad they didn't actually come - who knows what sort of damage they would have done based on their inability to handle some basic customer service procedures. read more

If you have an emergency, call someone else. My heat went out on Jan. 31. I called Michael and Son that night (Jan 31), they sent a tech, he ordered the needed parts. Told me it'd probably be in the next day. Next day, I hear nothing and call Michael and Son in the afternoon. This is when I find out that it'll actually take 5 - 7 business days because they have to order it. Fine. Can't be mad since that's on the manufacturer and not them. Over the next few days, I call every so often to see if the part has come in, just in case it has, and they haven't had a chance to call me yet. Keep getting the party line: 5 - 7 business days. No one bothers to look in to it more than that. Business day 8 (now 12 days without heat), I call, demand a more in-depth explanation, finally get to talk to someone in the right department, and find out the bloody part has been backordered. It MIGHT come in by Friday, Feb. 15. Needless to say, I hear nothing from Michael and Son on Friday. I finally get a call on Monday, Feb. 18 - the part is in. Fantastic, however, I am now out of town and not available for anyone to show up. I get them to schedule me for the 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. time frame for Sunday, Feb. 24. 12 p.m. rolls around on Sunday, and it's nothing but crickets. I call Michael and Son. They tell me they are SO sorry, but they have to reschedule me. At this point, I lost my temper. This is 25 days without heat at the coldest time of the year, and there seemed to be no sense of urgency or concern on M&S's part. I was promised that I would get a call by 8 on Monday morning to reschedule me as it will be a priority. 8 a.m. Monday comes and goes, and I get no call. I finally call them at 9. Customer service tells me the parts department (which has been the biggest problem area in this lack of communication issue) was supposed to call me. Customer service tells me that parts department will call me in 10 minutes. I do eventually get a call, argue with the manager for awhile, am given a 20% discount for my aggravation and the delays (which he was NOT amenable to giving me - again total lack of customer service), and a repair crew is dispatched to complete the repair. They did show up, and I have heat again. 26 days later. The lack of communication has been unbelievable. Michael and Son says that a heating emergency will be attended to as quickly as possible. However, their lack of communication and lack of action has left me so dissatisfied, I will never use this service again nor will I recommend to them to anyone. read more

I would never recommend Michael and Sons for any of their services. They came to my place a month back to fix a HVAC issue; I was promised that if the same problem recurred within a month, I wouldn't need to pay the $89 diagnostic fee. My heater stopped worked again within a few weeks and I called them back to fix the problem. The technician who came couldn't diagnose the problem and after 30 mins he wanted me to pay the $89 diagnostic fee. I called Michael and Sons and a supervisor told me not to pay the amount since the technician hasn't done a good job in diagnosing the problem. However in the invoice provided, it was reflected that the customer refused to pay the amount and my account was reflected as past-due. I called the company several times and they were adamant that the right service was provided and I had to pay the $89. I had to call an alternate technician and get the heater fixed. I will never avail the services of this company again. All they are intent on doing is charging the money and do not pay attention to any genuine complaints. DO NOT USE the services of this company. 03/09 I did receive a refund from the company and hence upgraded the rating. read more

I had an appointment window today of 2:00 to 6:00. Dispatch called around 4-4:30 assuring that the technician was en route and would call when close. At 6:15ish I called dispatch to cancel the appointment due to a no-show tech. Ten minutes later, the technician called to say he was 35 minutes away. I told him I cancelled with dispatch because a 4-hour window seems wide enough to accommodate but I don't think the schedulers know what they're doing. This is a follow-up review from 5/29/19/. I did reach out to Maurice as he requested. He apologized for the error and advised that he would send out a plumber on 6/1 first thing in the morning (we were unable to take any more days off to accommodate a weekday appointment). Maurice assured me that he would advise the plumber to give us a discount for the mis-scheduling and no-shows. The plumber did arrive first thing 6/1, determined the problem was the tub drain line was out of alignment. He took less than an hour and half to perform a replacement of the waste and overflow drain and charged $732.58! My brother-in-law asked him about a senior citizen discount and he stated he could give 10%, which he did. My Brother-in-law then asked about the discount that was to be given per our conversation with Maurice and the plumber stated that he was not aware of any discount and that the offices were closed and we would have to call Maurice on Monday to get it straightened out. We proceeded with the repairs having trusted that Maurice would follow through on his word. When I called Maurice Monday morning, he stated that the 10% discount was the "special" discount and would not give any additional discount as we cannot double-up. I explained to Maurice what the plumber told my brother and Maurice stated that he would talk to the plumber and get back with me and we may have to do a conference call. I gave Maurice 2 days, he never reached out to me. I called him again on 6/6 and was advised by the operated that he "was not available" and that she would leave a message for him to call me...again still no word from him. Their website advertises a coupon for a 10% discount up to $50 off. Therefore, the only discount they truly gave my father was for a little over 3% ($23.26). This company is a complete joke!! I have a background in construction and as far as I am concerned, they are a rip-off!! There is no way this job should have cost that much to begin with. Hi I had an appointment at 10am your the plumbing service, no one showed. I called and they sent me someone who showed up at 11:50am (after staring at ETA was 11:30). The way these service was described in my second call was not clear; and I was surprised to be asked to pay $89 for a 10min visit, the amount is framed as dispatched fee and could only be recovered if the work is performed. At any moment it was specified in the call that way. I want a refund of the $89. I don't want to point finger at a rip-off for the time being because I will give them the benefit of the doubt and let them investigate. But I'm extremely disappointed in the service and the punctuality. read more

Very very dissatisfied with this company. Spent over $3000 to have a water heater installed, and have electrical panel upgraded to handle the new unit. Given code requirements, the cost was supposed to be "reasonable," though I'm still questioning the legitimacy and "reasonableness" of their billing. Within 3-4 months, the water heater failed, and stopped working entirely. Have spent the past week trying to get a service rep here to replace the unit. Have had 4-5 appointments scheduled over the past week, and every time the tech has been 2-4 hours late (I.e. if the "service window" is 10-2pm, the plumber has arrived. 2-4 hours AFTER the latest time, so anywhere from 4-6pm). I understand that contractors use time windows for appointments, but if they are not even showing up in the time window they create/set, it is to the detriment of the customer. I have lost hours of work and had to rearrange my schedule for 5 different days for the unit to be replace, Not receiving any follow up from the company, only get updates on the next appointment status after I call. Manager not responsive to requests for help with timeliness of service. My perspective: The company does everything they can to help up-sell with the initial service and warranty, and once "sold," the business puts requests for repair at the bottom of their list. We bought a propane tankless water heater from Michael & Son 2 weeks ago when our previous water heater failed. We paid a HUGE amount of money for it and the contract states that permits, inspections and an electrician are included in the quoted price. The electrician didn't come out until the next day and then quoted me another $800 including an additional permit cost. We refused that service on that day (May 16) and I called Michael & Son for an explanation of these additional costs on top of an already (I've since learned) way over-priced unit. I have since called 3 more times and left messages and NO ONE HAS EVER called me back. I am about to dispute the charges on my credit card and tell Michael & Son to come take their unit back if no one can be bothered to even return a phone call. VERY dissatisfied, this is not customer service. read more
