Michael's is, as far as I've come to know, a preeminent "classic" Santa Monica spot. Opened in '79, a hang out for Fleetwood Mac when they were recording Tusk (generally a freaky hot-spot for the whos-who in the 80s), one of the restaurants responsible for "California Cuisine" and sometime home to a slew of notable chefs... I came for a reception dinner, and got to try a range of dishes. Everything tasted fresh- apparently seasonal and locally sourced, the promise of the aforementioned cuisine in action. It was nice to see a place with some years behind them still putting in the work to create quality in the kitchen, standing by their name and reputation. To top it off Michael himself turned up at some point to say hello, and thank our table for stopping in. A consummate host, he shook everyone's hand and for that couple of minutes it was impossible not to smile- something so old school and lovely. Places like these are impossible to replicate. My man and I had dinner here and it was fabulous. They have re-invented the food to be more fitting of the beautiful space. It's a romantic and intimate outdoor space that works in our harsh California winters ;) and fantastic summers. The food is fresh California fare based on what's happening at the Samo Farmer's Market (definite plus). We had the charred broccolini with pig ears and it was full of goodness with herbs and dressed with a slightly acidic dressing. The octopus also had a good sauce that had a nice kick! The service was excellent. Attentive without being obtrusive. They just wanted to make sure you were having a nice night out! Looking forward to going back! read more

3.5 For my lastest dineLA meal, I hopped on a reservation Joan M made for her friends. I have heard of Michael's for a while now and wanted to try it. I was glad to see they were one of the participants of dineLA. I was particularly happy to view the artwork as the owner is a collector of fine art (and a patron of the local art museums). Artwork is everywhere, including the restrooms. We met for lunch as the $28 menu made much more sense than the pricier $44 dinner menu for practically the same menu. I knew I wanted to order the mushroom risotto, hanger steak and chocolate cake. I felt I made more or less the right choice though people were really loving the pork belly soup. I had some of the pork belly though it was a huge portion (in comparison to the pork belly soups I've had recently), I didn't think it was as well flavored. It was essentially a hunk of pork belly that been cooked enough to render the fat sitting in a lovely soup colorfully decorated with chive oil. My risotto was pretty good. I liked the mushrooms in it and liked the overall flavoring. I just like risotto to be creamier. The individual rice kernels were still pretty hard, even bursting to a powder upon eating. It was a huge portion and I worried about not having enough room for my main dish. The hanger steak surprised me as the cut was much thicker than other hanger steaks I've had in the past. That was really nice. I like my food to be really hot though and though cooked medium rare, the steak was a bit cooler than I thought it'd be upon eating. There were no juices running out of it too much. I think our mains had sat for a while before they gave it to us because I do see some juice mixed into the clear oil over the smashed potatoes. The spinach that came with the steak was very good as well as the potatoes. The grilled albacore looked really dried out with the palest pink in the center but one of my dining partners who ordered it said she liked it that way. But the best part of the meal was the chocolate cake. The fact it was Valhrona chocolate was immediately apparent. I could not stop eating it! I think it may be one of the best chocolate cakes I've had in a while and I've had some damn fine ones recently. I was a bit less enthralled with the creme fraiche ice cream. It just tasted like a sour creme ice cream which if it was actually part of a cake (a la some cheesecake creations), it may have worked better. Every time I took some creme fraiche ice cream with the chocolate cake, I wished I was only eating the chocolate. I had heard the apple crisp was the best dessert of the three offered but I'm glad I stuck with the chocolate. The apple crisp came in an extremely shallow dish and was fine. There was nothing exciting or special about it. Service was very slow but good. They refilled my iced tea quite often and shuttered the awnings over the patio when it was apparent I had sunlight in my eyes. Valet parking is available, even during lunchtime. I parked in the neighboring however as it's only $.75 cents an hour, three hours max. Since lunch was slow, I do recommend putting in the full three hours so you have time to go shopping across the street along the Promenade! read more

Went here about two weeks ago for a secret drink/food tasting and it was amazing!!! Let me break it down for you.... 1. Wilburs Nemesis - If your a bourbon gal, this is where your going! Don't even look at the menu. Just order it. Maker's Mark Bacon Reduction, Leopold Bros' Apple Whiskey, Bulleit Rye, Dolin Rouge, Angostura Bitters, Torched Applewood-Smoked Bacon. Is your mouth watering? Because I just had to go get a glass of Makers mine was watering soooooo bad! Yum! And the torched Applewood Smoked Bacon is the largest garnish ever!!!! Go ahead, fall in love. I'll share. 2. Slider Tri - Waygu Beef, Duck Confeit, Pork Tenderloing. If I salivate any more I'm going to need a bib. 3. The Big Red Hat - Don Julio Reposado Tequila, Yellow Chartreuse, Lime, Lemon-Clove Simple Syrup, Lavender, Grapefruit Foam. Do you like tequila??? Cuz my homegirl love it and she loved this drink! Get it. Done! 4. Hiramasa Yellowtail Crudo - Citrus, Citrus Vinaigrette, Micro Greens. MMMMMM.... fish. Seriously? Do I have to say get it again? 5. Star of Africa - Tea-infused Tito's Vodka, Kumquat-Thyme Simple Syrup, Lemon Verbena, Club Soda. Why did I leave this place tipsy?? Oh yes, please see #'s 1, 3 and 5. 6. Tuna Poke - Apple, Jalapeño, Pine Nuts, Cilantro, Ginger-Soy, Crostini. If you don't like Sushi/Sashimi or Sushi/Sashimi based dishes. I'm pretty sure you shouldn't be living in Southern California. You may be kicked out. This poke was AWESOME! To top it all of. The head bartender is uber cute. But he's also uber married. I forget his name because I was obviously tipsy when I left, but this gentleman is worth the oogling while you drink. Hands down! I'm adding him to my cutest bartender/bouncer list for sure!!! All in all Michaels is an amazing place I will definitely be returning to. The atmosphere is just beautiful! The "outside" area is just magical! Can't wait to go here on my next date. I went here for lunch, and it was a really nice experience. The staff was really friendly, the ambiance was great, and the food was good. We sat in the back where the patio is. Our table was really sunny at first, and then they moved the covering so we could be in the shade. The portions for two fish dishes (one was on special) were pretty tiny, but those of us who got salads were satisfied with the serving. And dessert did not disappoint. I had the Espresso pot de crème, which was delicious. The lounge area inside also looks like it could be a nice place to get drinks in the evening. Overall, I would definitely go back. read more

My last dineLA experience of 2009 was at Michael's for lunch with some Yelpy friends (yes, a little slow on the post, I know!). We scoped out all the dineLA lunch options beforehand and decided that the menu at Michael's sounded the most appealing to us. On paper, at least. I was actually surprised that I had never heard of Michael's before - after all, it's right near 3rd Street and close to other places I frequent! As Lawrence C. said, it's "smack right in the heart of Santa Monica". Once you see the exterior, you'll know why you haven't heard of it...the only reason I knew it was there? The valet standing out front with a sign that said "Valet: Michaels" Once inside the restaurant, I found it to be very Between the four of us, we sampled: - Sweet White Corn Soup - Wild Mushroom Risotto - Ahi Tuna - Hanger Steak - Apple Crisp - Chocolate Cake The two things we ordered as "starters" (Sweet White Corn Soup and Wild Mushroom Risotto) were tasty and flavorful. The entrees were another story. Another friend and I both ordered the ahi tuna as our entree - bleah. Perhaps i was our perception of ahi tuna that did us in, but what we we received was definitely nowhere near what we had expected. For one, we were expecting a piece of ahi tuna that was seared - not at all what it was. Both pieces of fish were cooked all the way through, super dry and kind of tough. The desserts were okay...the apple crisp was not crisp at all and nothing to write home about. The chocolate cake was dry. Overall, 2 shakas, Michaels. I think you can do better. If I had eaten the same meal for regular price (not dineLA price), I would have rated this meal 1 star. read more

I hate this restaurant and would never go there again. I went with a friend who was here from Italy. We ordered $45 lobster and it came cold and undercooked. We sent it back and ordered something else, and were charged for both dishes. Michael offered us a dessert. :( Didn't like his attitude, would never return here. read more

2.5 Stars I came here for Dine LA. Decided to try a place that wasn't getting a lot of hype, but was a fixture in the LA area. We were seated in the patio area which is nice and would be a wonderful place during the summer when the roof is open. The prefix was your standard three course and the options looked pretty decent. I started with the Baccala Ravioli, my entree was the famous burger and my dessert was the Saffron Panna Cotta. The ravioli was nice, the salt cod wasn't overwhelming and the sauce was a nice balance to the dish. Prior to our entrees arriving, the namesake of the restaurant came by the table to say hi. I know servers probably aren't huge fans of Dine LA, but our server just looked like he was getting run ragged. When my arrived I was disappointed. After all this was a pretty "fancy" place, a burger here shouldn't be comparable to a fast food restaurant. The bun was the trendy brioche bun which everyone uses these days. The beef patty which I was over-cooked and under-seasoned, not to mention very small. The beef to bun ratio was way off. The duck fat onions and house made American cheese were not noticeable. Considering this was "Michael's Burger" and an item they were promoting on the Dine LA menu, I figured it would be much better. The side of fries were nicely done, though. The Panna Cotta was nice, a bit too sweet, but overall not bad. But friends Sticky Toffee Pudding was delicious as well. Came here on a night when it was raining and hardly anyone was around. We were daring and even dined on the garden patio and it was absolutely beautiful! With the rain around us (we were covered by an outdoor tarp) and the garden decor with lights and heaters, it was simply romantic! I love Michael's and the food is so delicious. I wish I was there right now. The wine list is really great and so many exquisite wineries to choose from. The service from start to finish was very professional and friendly. Completely attentive to everything we wanted and needed the entire time. To start... Pan-Seared Quail & Wild Mushrooms, Bacon Lardons, Pine Nuts, Wild Rice, Frantoia Extra-Virgin Olive Oil - Probably one of the best quails I've ever had. Why do they have to be so small? It was sooo good I wanted MORE, MORE, MORE! Then... Mt. Shasta Porcini Mushroom Ravioli & Meyer Lemon Brown Butter - soft delicious ravioli and flavorful mushroom inside. Mixed with the brown butter on top and around it and I wished I had more pasta to soak up the buttery goodness. And finally.... Butter-Poached Maine Lobster with Tagliatelle Pasta, Chanterelle Mushrooms, Spinach, & Lobster Bisque - The portions were excellent and the Lobster paired with the mushrooms and pasta was more than I imagined. We wanted dessert, but we were sooo full, I was sad I couldn't experience the sweet side of Michael that night. We skipped the wine pairings and went with a bottle of Michael's own wine from Malibu - a great red that fit well with our whole meal. Seriously, you can't miss Michael's as one of the best places to eat in Santa Monica. I wouldn't even try it at DineLA, to me that's almost an insult to pay so cheap for food so good. This may have happened 20 years ago, but I remember it like it was yesterday. My mom and stepdad took me, my grandparents (in from the UK), and a friend in from Australia to Michael's. They wanted to take these out-of-town guests somewhere really special and, even back then, Michael's was THE place. My stepdad even knew Michael personally, having helped with the design of the restaurant, and we had the best seat in the house. I was six (and impeccably well-behaved in restaurants, due to my English mother, before you say "a six year old shouldn't be taken to Michael's") and I was even in a jacket. As the waiter took our orders, she asked him whether they could just put together a simple pasta plate for me instead of giving me one of the complicated items on the menu. He refused. We asked for the manager and explained that I was six and didn't want sundried tomatos (it was 1986; they were on EVERYTHING) or foam or foie gras. He refused and said I had to order off the menu. We said we didn't care about paying full price for a plate of plain pasta. He still refused. My stepdad finally went back about a year ago. I will never go back. And it wasn't the owner's fault, but this is the sort of service (or utter lack thereof) that is typical of a place with this sort of atmosphere. And yes, we're all still bitter. read more

More just okay, but certainly not a huge fan. A 3.5. You know those restaurants on the westside with lots of old money? Like a DanTana's version in Santa Monica? (The al fresco is cute and homey, with cast iron patio chairs and tables. The heat pole didn't reach our corner, so a small portable heater leaned against the hedge at shoulder level behind me). Who can survive on half-filled dining rooms on a Thursday 7:30 evening? (They fit everyone outdoors the entire time). With a manager/owner/chef who walks around trying to maintain business by chatting with regulars who can afford $30+ entrees? (He recommended we go upstairs after dinner to check out his 3 private dining rooms "which we can rent" and to see his wife's artwork...) We opted for a half glass of syrah, which was also in the $30s. I ordered maine diver scallops, three big hunks nestled on creamy dark 'forbidden rice' and grilled bibb lettuce. The scallops were fresh, not fishy, tender to the fork and seasoned just right. Friend had the rocker bros. 28-day dry-aged prime ny steak, medium rare. It was robust, juicy and a very generous, 4 in. cut. The chunk also came with fries but the kitchen was thankfully permissible with a substitution of grilled vegetables. It's a *nice place to wine and dine, like a very pretty backyard. The food is good, though definitely not breakthrough amazing. For all that, however, the pricing is wrong. I get the feeling similar to a cute local mom-and-pop shop that's been around for a while -- but now trying to survive as finer dining by keeping prices high and relying on families with expense accounts. read more

Stopped in for an after dinner cocktail and had an amazing experience. My father had been three nights in a row and said it was a fantastic ambiance...he was right. The staff was perfectly welcoming and the crowd was full of cheer. Andrew the bartender (a true mixologist) made me a very special cocktail that he has named the "Leah"! A perfectly mixed Martini with a hint of grapefruit and secrets! Completely delicious. As we left we even got a wonderful greeting from Michael himself. We'll be back! read more

The service, food and ambiance is perfect. We will be back. The restaurant is slightly off the beaten path of the 3rd street promenade and the staff treats you well. Where to begin... It started at the bar...my boyfriend and I met up with some good friends that drove up from San Diego for the weekend. Although Michael's doesn't have a cocktail menu (coming soon), the server said he could make whatever...except for the pear martini that I craved. So I told him to just make me something sweet. He came back with a yummy pear martini like some kind of Houdini mixologist. Our host seated us in the garden (a must do on a crisp night with the heated lamps and mini heat boxes). The lighting and decor make you feel like you've been transported to an intimate dinner party. Our server, Joey D from New Rochelle, added color to our evening. He had the most hilarious and interesting stories yet wasn't overly intrusive. He even gave us a history of the restaurant (the first chef to the current 20-something chef - Michael) and made excellent food recommendations.... The only disclaimer regarding the food...it is a seasonal menu so these choices may not be available when you dine there. Here's the must have line up: Appetizers (shared around our table) 1. Oysters 2. Dungeness crab salad on a bed of avocado and citrus fruit 3. Spinach ravioli with pine nuts Main Course (my recommendation) - the veal with mashed potatoes and shitake mushrooms. The other fish and lamb entrees were good, but this dish is what really stood out to me. My apologies for not being able to provide information about the dessert. We had no room. Went here recently with my bosses and my fiance for a celebratory dinner. My bosses have impeccable taste, so when they suggested this restaurant, I didn't hesitate to agree even though I had never heard of it. I looked it up online before our reservation and realized I've walked/driven past it several times on my way to either the Promenade or Montana Ave. My fiance and I arrived early and were seated in the lounge. The bar area is very cool and old-fashioned. I'll admit that I am into the old-fashioned. I think I would have liked LA better in the 70s or 80s than I do now (yeah - the 70s/80s qualify as old-fashioned... depressing, I know). So take everything I say about this place with that specific grain of salt. The bartender was friendly to us even though we didn't order drinks and gave us waters. When our dining companions arrived, we were escorted outside onto the patio. It is unexpectedly beautiful out there, like an terrace oasis. I ordered a glass of Riesling that was perfect for me. Sweet and floral. Our server explained this to me when I ordered to confirm it would work for me, which I liked. For my entree, I had the duck, which is a duo of a breast and a confit. The breast was delicious and perfectly cooked. It was served over a chile poblano risotto. The risotto itself was good, but the pieces of chile were off-putting and rubbery. I picked them out and continued on my merry way. My fiance had scallops which he devoured. For dessert I had a blueberry tart that was flaky, light, and delectable. The cappuccino was excellent as well. In my opinion, the serving size was decent to generous. Our server told us that back in the day, this place was known as a "bring a snack" type place where the servings were ludicrously small for a lot of money. While this is still a pricey joint, the servings to dollars ratio seems to have improved. I don't go into this type of restaurant expecting to ask for a take-out bag to bring half my entree home as a midnight snack. If you come here looking for that, I suppose you will be disappointed. That doesn't mean that the portion size here is "insultingly-sized" per se. Put it this way - I am an ambitious eater. I don't fill up easily. Here, I had one piece of bread with butter, my entree, a glass of wine, dessert, and a coffee. I did not need to stop for food on the way home. My bosses had not dined here in over a decade, but they said the place has not changed at all in terms of appearance or style. I believe them. Again, I am retro to a fault, so I like that about it. The owner, Michael, happened to be in that week from New York and came to our table twice to greet us. I am not overly impressed by anyone's celebrity (nor should anyone be in Los Angeles... living here should jade you like that), real or self-declared, but I appreciated the personal touch, and he was not pompous, just friendly. read more

I've just come back from my first meal and Michael's, and it was really good. I've read some of my fellow Yelpers' responses, both the good and the not so good, but I have to say it was a great experience for us. Walking in was like entering a California cuisine time warp, but I mean this in a very good way. A lovely, airy space with beautiful art and a great patio. The service was lovely and not overly unctuous, which I really appreciated. I had the Jidori chicken (yummy), one friend had the risotto and hangar steak (she loved it), and another friend had the Michael's Burger, which was enormous. Everyone was happy with their meals, and we shared a dessert, which was okay. Michael himself was there, and couldn't have been a nicer host. Will definitely go back. Valet parking...$8. What a bummer. I remember Michaels to be so delicious with great service and amazing food. I hadn't been there since the late 90's. So when i remembered it for my husbands birthday- i thought - why not? An oldie but a goodie. Not so. I should have known the service was slipping when they led the four of us to a table set for three- and like- literally the table had only three chairs... not the biggest issuse except- the hostess walked away... Like it was our problem... So, i walked over to a neighboring table and got a chair for my dad... in my heels... so awkward! The problems were several deep- including but not limited to: the waiter reversing our order so every course was brought out incorrectly - not thats his, no that ones mine.. and so one, the waiter interrupted our birthday cheers (there was only 4 of us... give us a second) to take our order... again, awkward... I ordered a spring snap pea ragu and got- a rich heavy cream sauce - isn't that like- NOT a ragu?? My brother got the green eggs and ham (cuz how can you not?) and it was swimming- literally SWIMMING in hollandaise- since when did hollandaise become a soup? Ewwww.... Ultimately all the food was Meh... except the oysters- which take no cooking- they were fantastic. And then the bill was $450. Four 4 people- with only two glasses of wine. Way not worth it- it once was- but not anymore. Save your money, don't waste your time. read more

When i was looking at this rest in dine la, i also searched in yelp. I saw the star was 3.5. For an expensive rest in SM receives 3.5 doesnt sound right to me. However, i gave it a try. Portions- I totally agree some reviewers, the portion is way too small. I know its dine la and im not asking a huge portion like a cheap rest. I think it should have a standard.( I went to Bazzar dine la, portion was excellent. We were filled and happy ,not empty stomach.) Quality- the food was preheated before I believe, it came out slightly warm.. the dish wasnt heated enough.Mash potato was cold. Steak was way too chewy. However the desserts were excellent, the pumpkin pudding thing and peach cobbler. Service/ view- good, thats why 2 stars! read more

Beautiful verdant setting in the back. And they have a decent sized tv so you can nip away to check the Clippers / Lakers score. Very pleased with our time here. Scene: I made a reservation Last Tuesday for A Friday nite soiree with my wife who was celebrating her birthday. I briefly mentioned that It was her birthday and if we could have a nice table. (Briefly is the key word, I really didn't even think the person on the other end heard me, but what ever is all good) I had no idea of Michaels, barely heard anything about it but i got word of it in Tasting Table... So when we arrive, they sat us at a wonderful table in the "Garden", All I can say is R O M A N T I C, did I get major points! My wife LOVED IT! Fellas you want to take your woman to a great, romantic, unassuming place get there! Low light candles, warm heaters for it being a 7 reservation, just amazing! And my waiter Todd...he was great! they brought us a wine list, but we we gave up alcohol for lent so it was going to be a dry birthday. Anyway we asked Todd if the bartender could make us a not so sweet but refreshing drink. He came back with two awesome concoctions! They were so yummy. He really added to our lil birthday function. Ok for apps we had a yellowfin dish and a lobster dish..that were great! Our main courses were scallops and salmon that weren't anything less than amazing...I really would recommend this place. For desert, Todd came out with a plate that had HAPPY BIRTHDAY written in chocolate and her lil dessert with a small candle on it. I couldn't even believe they remembered i said to the woman taking my reservation earlier in the week! Went to Happy Hour at Michael's with a friend last night. The food was decent, and the Happy Hour cocktails were pretty good. But what really pissed me off was that we each also ordered an iced tea, and the waiter just kept refilling them. But when I looked at the bill, I saw that we were being charged $33 for six iced teas!!! I'm sorry. That is completely outrageous. If a restaurant is going to charge $5.50 for iced tea during happy hour (which is already really steep), then refills should be free, and if not the waiter needed to make that extremely clear upfront. When we complained to the waiter, he first said "they told me to charge you for the teas", and then later changed his tune and said, "I rang up the iced teas and just forgot to take them off." Right, because it must be common practice to ring up supposedly free refills of iced tea. I am giving the restaurant two stars because they ultimately did drop the extra four iced tea charges after we complained, but the reality is if a restaurant is offering a Happy Hour, they shouldn't use subterfuge to pad the bill. An absolute disgrace. I have eaten at most every restaurant in Santa Monica but wished I had gone to IHOP instead of this place. The "special" of the day was a $40 barramundi, which I was unfortunate enough to order. What arrived was a 20 gram piece of salt that would have fit in the palm of a newborn's hand. My wife's "loup de mer" was hardly any better. I have never in my life seen such obscenely small, insultingly-sized portions. After dinner, and the $10 valet fee, I asked my wife only semi-jokingly where we should go eat. We did end up getting some real food at another place, after the $134 tab at "Michael's". Moral of the story: EVERY other restaurant in Santa Monica is a better choice, priced more reasonably. And you actually might get fed as well! read more

There are several reasons why I do not recommend going to this restaurant: 1) The service was below average. The waiter came by a few times and did not replenish our wine. It's always a bad sign when you have to pour your own ($178) wine. Deduct 1 Star for bad service. 2) The food was below average. We ordered the goat cheese and beet salad. However, the goat cheese was a brie-goat cheese. Why?? Regular goat cheese tastes perfect with beets. Why mess with a good thing? Same thing with the chicken-waffles. It tried too hard. To top it off, the burger was "meh." Deduct 1 Star for bad food. 3) To top it off, the owner came off as uncaring and arrogant. He came by the table and asked how things were going. Here is some of= the play-by-play: Me: Do you honestly want to know or should I just write a yelp? Michael: Yes, I want to know. Me: Would you like to sit down? Michael: I do not sit down. Me: Ok, then I will stand up. After I told him how I felt, he hands me a business card. Michael: "We have been here 30 years. We do not have a 100% batting average. Here, email me for a gift certificate for next time." Michael, darling: Do you really think there is going to be a second time when the first time sucked? This is a classic example of how a good business owner could have turned things around by asking me: "What can we do to make this right for you?" There is nowhere else to go on a beautiful sunny LA weather for brunch/lunch than Michael's, and sit in their back, garden area. JUST BLISS. Surprisingly low key, the service is very friendly and personable and while the food isn't groundbreaking, the classic fares are solid and delicious. Would also be wonderful for a romantic dinner for two. One of the few "institutions" that are still nice to try for the 30-somethings. read more

The reviews for Michael's on Yelp are ambivalent. If you are on the fence about whether to dine at Michael's or not let me remind you that Pulitzer Prize winning food critic and LA native son, Jonathan Gold, includes Michael's on his list of 101 Best Restaurants in Los Angeles published annually in the LA Times. The lushly green outdoor garden and ceiling open to the sky create a fantastic dining experience. We were very fortunate to have dinner there last night which was the first night this year that the ceiling was open. The open air dining room reminded me so much of the opening scene of LA Story featuring Steve Martin. A classic LA experience. The restaurant has other chambers. As you walk in there is a bar on the right and a small lounge in front of you - neither of which require reservations. Between the lounge and the outdoor garden there are 8-12 tables in an indoor platform with no 4th wall that overlooks the recessed outdoor garden dining areas. In a way you are eating on a stage. We had enjoyed a cocktail from the lounge and looking at the garden was a bit light looking at a movie screen due to the fact the missing wall is approximately a 16 X 9 aspect ratio. So space is one of the two reasons I am encouraging you to try Michael's. The food and menu is the second. We enjoyed the El Paseo #6 which was tequila, mezcal, cassis, lavendar, lemon, clove over a meyer lemon granita (granita is flavored crushed ice) and a Just Around the Corner which is gin, lillet blanc, velvet falernum ( I don't know what that is), paige mandarin, egg white for a frothy head that is seasoned with japanese togarashi. We ordered and shared five dishes: * Buckwheat Sourdough Bread * Peruviana Beans served with halved black cherries, black sesame, and an outer drizzle of chili oil * Pork (aka Pig's Head) Torchon which is a charcuterie rich which is thinly sliced meat which is about half lardo and half meat * Cavatelli - this small pasta was in a rich butter and parmigiana sauce and included braised shiitake mushrooms and small chopped asparagus. It was perhaps our favorite dish * Pappardelle - it was thin, delicate and perfectly cooked and served with a rabbit leg sausage, thyme, and porcini read more

I've been here once before - ages ago and hated my meal. For some reason, I figured- it's been 10 years, might be worth a try - WRONG! I had the DineLA special with the hangar steak, which was extra chewy. The au poivre sauce was good but the green beans were a tad stringy. My dessert was nothing to be excited about, neither was the appetizer. Also tried one of their $16 salads which was pretty much salt with a side of lettuce. Bad! Our waiter seemed more than a bit impatient and not particulary attentive, not that the restuarant was busy or anything. The decor is great if you like shabby 70's style. I don't, so I was rather underwhelmed. The host was also in flipflops and a wife beater which I thought odd, and was on her laptop or chatting with a friend for about the entire time we were there. For the price (7.50 juice and 5.50 iced tea), I think you can do better at any other restuarant in Santa Monica. Even Chipotle or Monsoon would have been a better experience. Michael's has recently overhauled their entire menu, so my girlfriend and I went in to check it out during a recent Christmas shopping trip on the Promenade. We enjoyed happy hour in the bar area, sampling truffle fries, the kanpachi, shisito peppers and some delicious Seghesio Zinfindel. Unfortunately, when our credit card statements arrived this week, we discovered that I had been charged twice for this visit, and my friend was charged three times! SERIOUSLY?! My friend went directly to the restaurant this afternoon, and the girl on duty was not accommodating at all and told her to speak with the manager. Later, I phoned to have the charges removed from our respective credit cards. We are expecting a confirmation call from the manager. I am rather shocked that a restaurant of this caliber would have such a strange occurrence with triple and double charging our credit cards! read more

Michaels is well regarded by food critics. I am not a one of 'those' people, but just a normal guy who's been here a dozen or more times. At lunch I've given into just ordering the pricey hamburger because everything else is just beyond my lunch palate. Had the cold soups, fancy salads, and other interesting entrees but I either felt hungry (because I didn't eat much) or hated it (but never admitted it). So, it's a hamburger joint to me (Don't tell) at lunch. At dinner, I have to scale up and I pray that I can just order a steak with whatever foo foo comes with it. Yes, I do appreciate the quality, service, and all that. The food here can be more than a normal person can appreciate I'll tell you one thing that really makes this place stand out and it's that Michael himself has come out many times and will asked me how I liked my food (see why I don't say anything). That is very cool and worth ten points right there. Great good, nice patio, and seclusion when you need it. Michael really cares about every aspect of his restaurant and it shows. However, I don't like thinking that I'd rather be eating a great hot dog or taco when I'm here. Can't figure it out and won't admit it to those I'm dining with. So the hat is out of the bag - don't hold it against me, it's yelp right? read more

Michael's used to be the Chez Panisse of the South. We went in once, a year ago and it was empty so we left. Like no one was in there. But I've been wanting to go back and give it another try. So, when we found out they had a new chef and price point was brought back down to reality, we decided to give it a go. We booked our reservation on OpenTable for 2 at 7:30pm. Then changed it to 8:30pm via OT. When we got there, the hostess didn't know of the time change and said she didn't expect us, but would seat us right away. We sat on the infamous patio. Super nice outdoor area with lights and candles. Mellow vibe. There was a weird, cheap, Wal-Mart style heater placed by our table. Which was blowing out excessive heat on a warm night. We turned it off. This place would do better with regular heat lamps that the staff turn off and on. Not cheapos. We scouted the menu...street tacos and pizza among other random things. Server came and took our drink order and recommended (with a flashlight, nice touch) his fav things. We took his advice and got the hamachi ceviche and gazpacho.And was debating on wether or not to get the jidori chicken or lamb (with duck egg?) for the entree. The Some Like it Hot drink was good. The best thing there. No bread or anything complimentary. Our gazpacho came quick. It was so bland, no flavor at all. Shrimp cocktail sauce at best. Needed chips as it tasted like watery salsa. Then came the ceviche, hoping it would be better, but no. It was super sloppy. Looked like slimy coleslaw slumped on top of a Ralph's small tostada. Only a few pieces of hamachi, that were not even displayed. Had one bite and was done. We decided to leave. NEVER HAVE I DONE THIS BEFORE! Felt slightly bad about it, as I really want to like this place. But the food just sucked. We asked for the check and suddenly the chef came over to chat. He prob was told we weren't happy. Chef was nice and smiling, as we bashed his meal. Sorry Chef. I know you can do better!!! Then Michael himself came over and shook our hands and abruptly walked away. There's a temple of doom feeling there. Everything feels uneasy. From the chef to Michael to the people greeting you at the front. I feel like this place needs to go on Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares. Gordon could help. As my bf said, this would not happen in San Francisco. It's sad how Michael's has lowered itself down to a subpar food truck status. The chef needs creative control. This is a legendary restaurant in LA and it needs to succeed! read more

Crappy for vegetarians. Starters were OK. Focaccia was a little dull. Cheeseboard was nice, with good bread. The market pizza claims to be vegetarian on the website (and on the menu). It came with chorizo on - the waiter showed me a different menu, which said the pizza came with "market vegetables" and didn't have the V symbol on it. The waiter claimed that that was how it's supposed to be. It's OK to screw up, but admit it. And then don't insist I get the one veggie entree, the bland margarita pizza. read more

HAPPY HOUR ONLY: This is a tough one for me to do fairly, because I've only been here for happy hour and I enjoy it enough to keep coming back. There is almost always space in the bar, and the happy hour goes all night. The happy hour is a discount from the main restaurant, but you shouldn't expect sports bar prices, nor should you expect sports bar food. The beers are reasonable, the drinks are still slightly pricy but fair for mixology style drinks. I enjoy their mule. Haven't really fallen in love with others, but that's fine since beer is about $6. Not a huge beer list, but what happy hour does. FOOD: I've had the waffle style wings. They're very tasty and worth ordering with a tough of sweetness, but my go to is now the duck confit tacos. The duck is cooked deliciously, nice and crisp and super flavorful. The peach salsa is great. Again, not super cheap, but a good deal for the quality that you're getting. I've also had the beet cured yellowtail, which is nice. Love the creme fraiche, still prefer the duck. If you're hungry, go for the whole duck confit dish. Comes with a super flavorful sauce. DECOR: The whole place is super nice. As mentioned, I haven't eaten in the restaurant, but the outdoor dining area is very pretty and the upstairs room is nice for parties. Wide variety of art throughout and they have a nice selection of mellow trip-hop/acid jazz music playing in the bar. read more

The first time I went there, they were out of the aged beef which was the reason we went in the first place. We decided to try again for Valentine's Day. After he made a reservation, I suggested my date call and ask them to hold two of the aged beef entrees for us. He was at that time informed there was a fixed price menu. Chateaubriand and dover sole for $95.00. This did not include alcoholic beverages. When we got there we were offered a choice of 6 oysters or something else nondescript or unappetising. When the oysters arrived there were only 3 and 1 looked anaemic. When I asked where the other 3 were I was told they had changed it because they were running short. I suggested they should have told me that when I ordered. I asked for the manager. Eventually I was offered a complimentary glass of wine. I told them I was drinking IPA. She offered to bring me another. I said why can't you just comp me the one I already have since I don't want another. A few minutes later a glass of white wine arrived. i sent it back. I also had to ring the restaurant on my cell phone at one point because the waitress was not paying any attention to her station. I asked for my chateaubriand to be cooked so it wasn't raw. I specified medium well. When it arrived it was raw in the middle actually only the outside was cooked. I pointed this out to the waitress. She said that was what medium well meant. I asked her if I had ordered it rare would she have trotted the cow out? She gave me attitude, so I suggested she send the chef out and I would describe to him the difference between medium well and raw. Eventually the owner came by and asked why I hadn't sent it back. I said because I was tired of complaining. I also noted I should not have to send a meal back. It should come out as requested medium well vs. raw, 6 oysters vs. 3. The people at the table next to us were very sympathetic as they were also having a terrible time. The owner comped us one of the $95.00 meals. That wasn't the point. the point was to have a relaxed, enjoyable meal on a special occasion. read more

Moved to the neighborhood a couple months ago and just tried Michael's for the first time and absolutely loved it! The food and drinks were top notch and the service and atmosphere were amazing. Will definitely be making this place my regular spot! read more

It only took me 32 years to try this restaurant. In a city where trendy restaurants come and go (and even faster with annoying pop-up venues), this is my effort to remember long-running establishments that we take for granted and forget about like a high school friend. Right from the start, Michael's is a time machine with their 1980's style restaurant logo and then entering their lounge area with 1980's art. The nostalgia continues with pink-shirted waiters working a tented garden dining room that made me want to order a mai tai. The food is also 80's style, but with some minor updating. Sure, we mock the 80's food these days, but it was solid and fulfilling. Michael's is 80's comfort food. The first starter was the classic 80's combination of potato and smoked salmon. The potato came in the form of stiff agnolotti pasta along with a boring mascarpone sauce, but helped by the green watercress and classic chives. Another starter was meaty scallops with a large pile of retro frisee and candied pecans. The duck entrée was a cleanly prepared duo of rare breast and tender leg confit. A potato puree and spinach appropriately, but predictably, completed the dish. The sea bass entrée didn't say blackened on the menu, but the skin was dark and charred. To contrast the char, yogurt was placed on top. The rest of the dish with a polenta that could easily have passed for potatoes and mushrooms were a bit out-of-place. All four dishes were well executed and satisfying. Dessert was less satisfying. The chocolate-hazelnut torte was neither very chocolately nor hazelnutty and came with an overly hard caramel sauce. The yogurt panna cotta in a honey soup and dotted with fresh blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries ending up being an ordinary custard. The wine pairings were well matched and affordable at $16. Service was rushed with courses coming too fast. They weren't trying to rush us out after dessert, so it's not like they were trying to flip the table. So, I'm not sure why the pacing was so fast. Love this place. World-class cooking, world-class hospitality. If you've read my other reviews, you will see how rare it is that I give more than 1 star. This restaurant has been around for about 30 years. The owner is a doll and he wanders around frequently greeting guests. He is a professional. His employees are welcoming, friendly and efficient. How rare! The food is wonderful. Amazing flavors, good basic and wonderful sophisticated choices. Becoming rare in this city. Even their Coleman Salad is splendid. Simple, French vinaigrette that is delightful with crisp lettuce sprinkled with their rooftop-grown fresh herbs. I've had a salad with their tarragon and OH was it yummy. Yes, I know I'm a weirdo loving a salad but it sure beats iceberg lettuce and bad dressing elsewhere any day. I like to eat in the bar area, which is lit by candles and has a perfect mood for dates. They have truffle fries that are generously topped with grated parmesan - and these too are exceptional. You also get enough fries for 10 friends to share. I hear the mushroom risotto is to die for. The pizzas are wonderful. The burger looks amaaaaazing! The inside dining area features a garden patio that is lovely. There is some major power lunch history out there. Shhhh. I won't tell. I have to say that even the valet guy outside is one of the sweetest valet guys you've ever met - he has a BEAMING smile that I noticed the very first time I went there. Give this guy some recognition. He is also a good indicator of the warmth and hospitality that you will receive at the hostess station, restaurant, bar area and from the owner. My wife and I came for random dinner and couldn't be more pleased with the ambiance, service and food. Living in Santa Monica we have tried it all and feel as though this little gem is gonna become our new little spot. There is a very cute garden area, the service from Shelby and manager Stephen has been epic and we returned the very next night cause we loved it so much. You gotta try it to believe it. We are hooked. Also, you don't feel rushed for the table to be turned which left us ample time to enjoy the amazing cocktails and dessert. Looking forward to returning again very soon. I won't be making this review an exercise in creative writing, I will just give you the facts as I perceived them. There's enough verbose people on Yelp to fill a sinking ship, and I often wish they would... Made a same-day reservation via Open Table for 8pm. Called around 4pm to ensure it was not lost in cyberspace somewhere. The hostess confirmed she had it, so that whole system seems to be working fine. While getting ready, it was suggested I ask if gentlemen require a jacket. I didn't think they would, but I called up anyway to inquire. The hostess seemed very confused by my inquiry, and then proceeded to tell me it was a little chilly outside. How adorable, this girl thinks I'm asking for a weather report. Judging by her confusion to my question, I assumed the answer was no, thanked Fritz Coleman for the update, and hung up the phone. Attire is business casual. Upon arrival, we're greeted with $10 (ouch!) valet parking. Once inside, our table is ready and waiting, and we are seated immediately. A great spot on the patio. Away we go! Cocktails - The wife and I both opt for "The Passion". Per the menu - Lime, Vanilla, Sugar, Passion Fruit, Lemon Zest, Grand Marnier, J's Spiced Rum, Float of Da Bubbly - An absolutely heavenly blend of tangy citrus and sweetness. I only wish they were a tad larger at $14 a pop. Appetizer - We opted for the sliders - Beef, Russian Dressing, Duck Fat Onions, Housemade American Cheese - Downright delicious. A great way to try the burger, without committing to it as an entree. We also asked to have a side of Truffle Fries to go with the sliders, another check in the positive column, they're fantastic. Main Course - Scottish Salmon - White Bean Puree, Mustard Greens, Maitake, Bagna Cauda While good, the most underwhelming plate of the night. Skin-on and grilled, I found the Salmon to be a tad bland and just not that great. Points for not over salting, though. Iowa Duroc Pork Chop - Goat Cheese Polenta, Roasted Carrots and Apples, Mustard Aioli Total redemption. The chop was cooked perfectly, nice and tender, and the blend of flavors really served it well. A good size portion too, a nice thick cut chop. If you're really hungry, this one's a winner. Dessert - S'mores Beignets - An unreal desert, basically little chocolate filled donuts with a side of graham cracker ice cream. I almost lost my mind. These were out of this world, and I would go back JUST for them. Service - I found the service to be a little slow on cocktails, and a tad impersonal and mechanical. That said, I would prefer it to a server who is "on" and cracking dumb jokes where I feel forced to laugh or he'll spit in my entree, so it's a minor complaint. We were, however, slightly perturbed that the owner/ manager (?), who was making his way around the room greeting the tables and checking up on everyone, skipped our table. He walked right by us. Twice. Unfortunate, I wanted to pay him compliments on those damn beignets. All in all, a great night. We got out of there about $25 under budget, tip included. Went here with my boyfriend and his globe trotting parents who live for food and fantastic wine. The food was very good and inventive (I think I actually ate a piece of my boyfriend's father's rabbitt while here and for me to do that, it had to look DAMN good) and the serivce was top notch but they lose a star for thier decor. With how much it costs to eat here, you would think that they could update thier 80's style dining room (and trust me, I love the 80's.) read more

I use to come here with my family when I was younger, so I was excited about my return visit the other day for lunch. That warm n fuzzy nostalgic feeling quickly turned to nausea from the mold - or whatever the hell that undetectable old person smell was that infiltrated the inside. This place use to be pretty swanky back in the day...but wow, have they let it go. I now realize why it hasn't been on my radar in 10 years...renovations DESPERATELY needed. I want to love this place - the location couldn't be better (it's right off the promenade), it has a great outdoor patio (which is pretty much the only redeeming thing about it these days) and it has a well-known culinary name behind it. Lots to work with, but nooooooooo. The food was pretty good, but definitely not worth another visit. If I'm going to splurge on a nice meal, I'd like the decor and overall vibe of the restaurant to parallel the bill. Not happening here, that's for sure. read more
